DC K.O. Knight Fight 2

It’s revealed that the Heart of Apocalypse is creating different worlds based on Batman’s fears and trapping him in them to punish him for trying to escape after losing/dying in the tournament.

Bruce and Dick Grayson-Batman duke it out, and argue about what is real or not, until Bruce beats Dick by playing on his good-hearted nature. Then Bruce is immediately sent to a different world where the Joker killed everyone except Jason Todd/Red Hood, by Joker gassing all of Gotham.

In this other world, Bruce wakes up in Arkham as an inmate and is interrogated by Jason/Red Hood, who is now Batman, and is convinced that Bruce is Clayface in disguise. Bruce fights Jason and tries to escape, only to realize that all of Gotham is now Arkham and still full of the Joker’s toxic gas. Realizing his only option is to play the game the Heart of Apocalypse has set for him, Bruce embraces it and transforms into Clayface.

The art for this series is off the charts, love the drawings and paneling. Things are getting a bit weird with the story/plot but the upcoming issue can still redeem things.

Good art. Batman’s fears are center stage and he is becoming the thing he hates. Chaos.

This story is getting really good. I’m honestly impressed, and I wasn’t expecting to like the second issue even more than the first. Dick Grayson is an all-time favorite character for me, and while I’ve never connected as much with Jason Todd, the way this story uses Jason, as Red Hood, to test Bruce is incredibly exciting.

I love how every different character and world that Batman encounters in this series serves as some kind of lesson or trial for him. It makes the story feel so much deeper than just a “cool alternate timeline” event.

The conclusion of the Dick Grayson storyline was both meaningful and a lot of fun. It gave real insight into who Dick is and how he operates as a crime fighter. Now, as the story continues to unravel, we dive deeper into Red Hood and Bruce’s unresolved nightmares about Jason. Just a small side note, but the reference to Absolute Batman and alternate universes was such a cool touch.

I don’t want to give anything major away; I’ll just say this, I was not expecting Red Hood’s Gotham to look like that. I was genuinely surprised, and immediately found myself counting the days until I can see how this Red Hood arc wraps up. I’ll have to wait for next issue, but I’m hopeful it tops this month’s issue, just like this one topped the last.

And lastly, Dan Mora is the man. Some of the panel work in this second issue is absolutely incredible. I caught myself just sitting there, taking in the art and appreciating every detail.

Very exciting, very engaging, and very fun.

Another solid issue and more fun from the big event. The fighting is well illustrated and the story is moving at a brisk pace while still taking time to build and develop the characters.

This book looks slick. Farrell uses color really smartly to distinguish the different nightmare versions of Gotham from one another, shifting from the sickly neon of Nightwing’s to the stark black and white of Red Hood’s.

I’m reading Final Crisis right now, and there are definitely some parallels between that event and this. Both involve Darkseid taking over the world and rending reality from itself, sure, but there are also arcs like this one that echo with Final Crisis. Knightfight is reminiscent of the Butler Did It storyline in Final Crisis where Bruce is trapped inside his own nightmare and the bad New Gods are sucking his identity out through tubes…

Oh, look. Jason Todd made me cry again. Shocker.

I think this installment of Knightfight is even better than the first! It hits all the right emotional beats and is totally action-packed. I also think the artwork in this issue is even better than the last. The way the color palette changes when we are transported to Jason's world is brilliant. Such a strong issue!

This is entertaining with another double surprise ending.

One surprise ending happens and then another one happens.

What you thought was happening is not what you thought was happening It was something else entirely.

interesting story a titch confusing but that's kind of intended at this point.

You have to know a character so well to break them and pick them apart like Bruce is doing with himself and each of the Robins in this series, and that’s what I’ve always enjoyed so much about Joshua Williamson’s writing. The reveal of the truth about Knightfight Jason’s reality is heartbreaking. I felt it like a gut punch. That’s a big fear of mine for the future of the character, too, but it’s also one that so few writers at DC seem to understand as they constantly isolate him from the rest of his family.

“Thank you Dan Mora,” everyone says is unison. But also thank you to the rest of this team, the colors were amazing, and for a series you just know is supposed to be a fun side plot for batman to have some senseless fun and win, this carries with it a lot of surprising death that makes it a worthwhile read. I love seeing reality change so much just to combat batman and his antics, as batman establishes right at the start of this as we find him facing off against Dick in a world where his brothers are dead and he is batman training an army of robins…the only reason batman is in this mess is because he entered the tournament where you are only supposed to bring one item, and he cheated, and even after dying he attempted to escape and the heart of Apokolips twisted reality around him. Bruce now also has confirmation that this world is a lie, as Dick had him in a chokehold Bruce could feel his heartbeat…and it didn’t match with a man his age. As they are surrounded by Robins, Bruce makes one more fantastic point about this world being a lie:

“That was the other tell. You let your robins fight for you. Dick would never do that. He knows I always fought alongside my robins. I trained you and your brothers and sisters… And I bet my robins can kick your robins’ asses.”

Hahaha, now that he knows this world isn’t real and the heart of Apokolips wants him to give in, now that he can see the fallacies and twisted narratives, he is going full no holding back snarky Bruce and I love it, lol. What proceeds is an amazing range of batman just putting Robin’s into the dirt before Dick calls them off and takes on Bruce himself. We get some really intricate fight scenes before Dick’s natural skills and instinct he has had since he was a kid surmount Bruce’s own skills learned through trauma to become a legitimately better batman. As such Bruce calls it off, he shifts into the version of Bruce Dick knows. He apologizes for killing everyone in their world, and as such Dick reaches out his hand to help Bruce and help get him off the Lazarus venom. As Bruce takes Dick’s hands he thanks him for being something he could never be…too trusting! He immediately delivers an upper cut, shocking the hell out of the robins. This isn’t the real Dick, he could never be, Dick actually trusts people and doesn’t try to control him so he is doing what he told Clark to do as that’s what the heart of Apokolips wants…not holding back.

As Bruce lifts up his collapsible curved sword to take Dick out…suddenly he is struck by some from of energy as the entire world shifts around him until he is in full black and while in a straight jacket behind bars. Reality has shifted and now standing in front of him is the one glorious red thing in cover…Jason, or I should say…Batman. Bruce is his prisoner here, and the heart of Apokolips has adapted. Jason has heard every crackpot “lie” Bruce has ever told about different realities, and when Bruce starts mentioning the Apokolips tournament one again Jason has had enough as he’s heard it all before. In this world, once again, all of his brothers are gone and an older chiseled Jason doesn’t go a day without thinking about them. But here’s the thing, there is another layer to this as not only does Jason hate Bruce but he also believes he is Clayface in such a few psychosis that he fully believes he is Bruce! At this point Bruce has already gotten his way out of the straight jacket and Jason is pulling out his automatic crossbow to take gym down before “clayface” can escape again. Bruce once again tries to feed into what the heart wants by fighting Jason. The world has been crafted to his fears, that he let gotham and Jason down and that the heart will always find a way to further break him down. By showing him that Jason’s instincts were right and that he could be a better batman if he was willing to do what Bruce wasn’t. Bruce is able to get the upper hand on Jason in the fight and flip him into a cell and lock the door. Bruce made a break for it, not sure where to go…only upwards. Except he gets outside and finds a red sky and something go noticeable absent…sound, the city is dead quiet. Jason reveals the truth that “Basil” is now remembering. Gotham is Arkham now, the entire city. Jason reveals that batman always only THOUGHT Jason learned into violence or killing (which of course Bruce already confirmed to be true) but Jason gave all that up. What Jason learned instead from Bruce was how to be alone, that it was his destiny to save gotham alone. The city is now encased in a giant red dome as joker irradiated the city with gas. They evacuated the city, but Jason stayed behind, isolated, to keep everything safe and deal with everyone who tries to break in. He has been at this alone for 20 years, and then came clayface here pretending to be batman. Suddenly even Bruce is questioning his reality, this is still the tournament, right? And then Bruce reaches a moment of acceptance, if the heart wants him to be clayface…then so be it! The issue ends with batman exploding across the page into the form of clayface. Reality is what you believe it to be here, how exciting. Through that whole interaction I really love how they play with what general people and batman may “think” Jason wants (killing people to end the problem of crime) only to show a world where that isn’t the case at all and instead Bruce’s isolation is what drives him. Making Bruce and us question once again, is this the true makings of a better batman and world? At this point it also feels like the heart is doing this side quest solely to mess with Bruce and teach him a lesson for trying to cheat, lol. The time out corner of the DC KO event.

I definitely enjoyed this issue, though the pacing felt extremely fast. The artwork is phenomenal, Dan Mora continues to deliver at an elite level. With only four issues to tell the story, things are moving quickly, and while I’m really intrigued by the concept, the constant jumping between worlds, each featuring a different Bat-family member taking on the mantle after their own family has fallen, left me wanting a bit more.
I love seeing these alternate realities and how each character embodies Batman in their own way, but I can’t help wishing for more interaction between them. Bruce encountering the Nightwing and Red Hood Batmen is cool, but imagine the impact of the entire group fighting together or even clashing against each other. That kind of crossover moment would have been huge.
The story isn’t bad at all; it's just different from what I expected. I’m genuinely interested to see where it goes from here. I do recommend reading it, though waiting for the trade might be the better experience.

BOOM ! And that’s how you redeem yourself from a mediocre first issue. I almost didn’t continue this miniseries but I’m so glad I did. From the art work, the colors, the story, the ABSOLUTE UNIVERSE reference, the ending! LETS GO. This is awesome!
