Rate this book
Imagine if all the creatures of myth and legend were real. What if fairies, trolls, Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster secretly inhabit the earth right alongside humans? This is the world of 15-year-old Callie Cooper, a Hunter working for the Organization for the Research, Investigation, and Overseeing of the Neo-mythical (O.R.I.O.N.). This top-secret organization is charged with the task of maintaining the delicate balance between Neos (creatures of myth) and humans. The Hunters of O.R.I.O.N. investigate strange happenings among these fantastic and potentially dangerous creatures, only interfering when the safety of Neos or humans is at risk.

Under the supervision of her Mentor and uncle, Liam, Callie is finishing her time as a Rook and is looking forward to reaching Chaser status. With graduation quickly approaching, Callie is under great pressure to complete all of her requirements for promotion and make her uncle proud.

Everything in Callie’s life changes on the night a strange, deadly Neo nearly escapes the base. Callie has a brief yet frightful encounter with the creature who tells her he has information she desperately wants – information about the death of her parents. Through a series of unusual circumstances, Callie discovers that the only life she’s ever known may not be as safe and genuine as she once believed. Callie is forced to make decisions that will forever alter her destiny and her relationships with others.

Hunter’s Oath is a story of the importance of friendship, the search for truth, and the struggle of learning what it means to trust those who love you.

This is not a genre I would usually choose to read, but this book was recommended to me and I was intrigued by it. I was not disappointed! The author, Ken Nobles, does a great job helping the reader believe the unbelievable as mythical characters come to life in this amazing tale! The book's heroine, Callie Cooper, employs the perfect mix of vulnerability as a typical teen aged girl and bravery as a fearless hunter. Rook is a page turner, for sure, and it left me anxiously awaiting the next in the series! I highly recommend Rook for all ages. Read it. You will not regret it!

While I read this book in a day and found it enjoyable and aspects of it clever, I had trouble connecting to the characters. There wasn't a stand out character but maybe that development will come in subsequent books in the series. They mostly seemed angry, suspicious and rude. Something engaging, endearing, or unique needs to be added to their personas. Something that connects them to each other which will tie them to the reader.

Loved this first book in the series written by Ken Nobles. Rook sets the stage for Callie and her friends. A YA book, Rook is filled with obstacles, problems, good vs evil, corruption, and relationships. I can't wait to see what happens in future installments of this series by Ken Nobles.
