Vic has one complaint about his girlfriend Rain--he's not allowed to do butt stuff, even pegging, which he's always wanted to try. What's a man to do? One day, Vic happens upon a very uniquely shaped root vegetable at the restaurant he works at and he gets an idea. What could possibly go wrong?
From the author of Bunny Room, Janitor, and Hush, Little Nightmare comes a snack-sized meal of a book that might have you refraining from eating another starchy vegetable.
I came for the promise of body horror, not expecting too much beyond that but I was pleasantly surprised. Brady's writing style is really nice and felt polished. The story is weird in a way that's not THAT over the top or hard to follow so it would make a decent entry point for people looking to get into bizarro fiction. It's uncomfortable but also hilarious. I was delighted.
🥔🥔🥔 What thee actual f*ck🤯🤯i really don’t have any words….i went into this blind…and I really just don’t know….ughhh…..uhm not quite sure how I even read this….i just couldn’t believe what I was reading and ultimately wanted to see how things ended….i don’t know what to say…just know i don’t think I’ll ever eat a potato in any form ever again in life…do I recommend this???……uhh maybe if you want to be lost for words or any coherent thoughts💀
Oscar Brady’s POTATO is the perfect bizarro body horror nightmare, full of gross anatomy and outrageous sexual situations.
It has instantly become one of my favourite short stories of all time, evoking the viscerality of Cronenberg and the profound existentialist dread of Kafka, while still being an extremely stupid story about fucking a potato.
Firstly thank you so much to Oscar for this ARC, I have read all of Brady’s books & loved every single one of them. I genuinely get so excited when his arc’s hit my inbox! Secondly 🤣🤣🤣…that is all!
Naughty review incoming, plus a couple of outlined spoilers…stop reading now if you’re not into the spicier side of life 😳
Vic & Rain have a very wild & fun sex life, they’re not adverse to trying new things…except the back door stuff…that’s a no no from Rain no matter how much Vic wants to try it out, not on rain though, no…he wants it done to him! 👀
Vic looks at ways he can do this for himself, but doesn’t have much luck. That is until he finds the right shaped potato, or as he puts it…a dicktato 🤭🤣 he’s beyond ecstatic with this, takes it home and wastes no time in trying it out!
As predicted it gives him the best O, so much so that it makes him pass out with pleasure! Well it’s all fun & games until said potato is erm lost 🤣 The panic & trials that come next are just hilarious!
Omg Oscar 😂 why did I love this so much 😅 it was SO funny, I was giggling from the very first page. Honestly the way you tell stories is just the best 😅
I loved the nod to bunny rooms too 🤭 absolutely brilliant, thanks again for sending me this arc. I needed the unserious laugh out loud read in my life & can’t wait to see what you do next 🫶🏻
This is one of the funniest books I’ve read this year. It’s bizarre, grotesque, and full of WTF moments. In Potato, we meet Vic, and Vic is chasing that big O, a P-gasm, they say. One day at work, he finds an oddly shaped potato, and this vegetable is about to make his dream come true. Let’s just say their love will grow, and… The two become one! Potato is only 44 pages long but enough to make you laugh, test your stomach, and squirm. Definitely one of my favourite reads of the year, and I have to thank Oscar for the arc. Cooking has become a laugh. I can’t look at potatoes without giggling!
Of course, it’s a huge yes from me! Go grab that spud!
I was given an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In Potato, our main character Vic has an...unfortunate incident with a spud that is mostly of his own doing. The story was gross, disturbing, and fascinating, with an undercurrent of the importance of expressing who you are to those that you love--quirks, kinks, and all--and the dangers of hiding that truth inside until its too late. The first half of the story was delightfully disgusting (I gagged a few times). I thought the second half faltered a bit, as Vic's fate became clear and the narrative took on a more reflective tone, but overall it was a fun splatterpunk adventure with some sufficient gross-out elements and a little something to say. I would definitely recommend checking this one out!
Potato by Oscar Brady is one of those books that feels like a bruise you can’t help pressing. It explores pain, isolation, and the messy parts of growing up in a world that doesn’t feel built for you. The narrative is equal parts disturbing and tender , a reminder that even damaged things reach for the light.
Brady’s writing digs deep into identity and emotional wounds while keeping the story grounded in very human vulnerability. It’s bold, original, and not afraid to make the reader uncomfortable which is exactly why it sticks with you.
A gritty, haunting read for those who love psychological and character-focused storytelling.
I was SO invested during the entire story. Don’t shove any 🥔 up your 🍑 — OR ELSE. Seriously though, this was hilarious and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of reading this. 10/10 bizarro I give it 🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔 5 oiled up potatoes
definitely an interesting concept. I loved the bleak humor and how progressively the story was just bleak as fuck! definitely a page turner and I could not put this down!
If you love bizarro and/ or body horror, this definitely fits the bill! I received an ARC from Brady for another short that's releasing this month, and so I wanted to check out some of his other works... and honestly, this is one of the wildest things I've read.
Do you like potatoes as much as Vic? How about a sexual fetish? Oscar Brady has you covered; just read "Potato." When Vic doesn't get what he wants in his relationship, he finds other ways. Just when he thinks things have gotten bad, they only get worse. I don't know how Oscar Brady does it, but of course, he crushed it. Highly recommended if it's your thing.
Vic was quite the spud..ahem I mean stud but instead of discussing his sexual interests with his partner he made a bad decision to try something new and paid for it dearly. I will side eye potatoes for the rest of my life. Perfect blend of body horror, splatter, and bizarro.
A cautionary tale about getting too intimate with your food. I'm rating this not as a comparison to any other book, as there's nothing else I've read that is quite like this, lol. Bizarre, extreme, silly, but ultimately engrossing
