With worshipful reverence, we sing hymns and bear testimony of the one Being whose omniscience, power, and splendor allow him to reign as the King of Kings. In this eloquent and personal book Elder Bruce D. Porter teaches and bears witness of Jesus Christ. He explores the feelings and spirit surrounding important events in our Lords life- His Birth and resurrection, His roles as Redeemer and Light of the World, His atoning ransom, and His future millennial reign. Jesus of Nazareth was and is the Lord and King of all creation. Any reader who desires to learn more of the Savior- not just to be acquainted with him but to understand and love him- will find in this book the motivation to seek him out through personal study and prayer.
I just finished reading The King of Kings again, in preparation to teach New Testament this year in Seminary. I love this book for it's brevity, depth, analogies to things known in our age and culture, and the reverent, beautiful, awesome sense of what the Savior has done and will yet do. Here is my previous note from a first reading in March 2008: Next to the books on Jesus Christ written by Talmadge and McConkie, I rate Bruce D. Porter's book next! I found it had wonderful insights along with the biographical information, and I was able to make many applications to my personal life. It was not written in so much a scholarly manner, but in a personally appealing way - like a grandfather to his beloved family. It was uplifting and inspiring, and very humbling to understand with greater awe the kingly status of Jesus Christ.
This was an amazing testimony and insight into the life of the Savior and his mission here on earth. It gave some interesting perspectives about the political turmoil surrounding the miracles and work of the Savior and perhaps why so many had a difficult time believing or accepting who he was as well as the few disciples who was obedient and faithful to the end.
While I was reading the first chapter, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book -- or at least not love it. However, it drew me in. It is all about Christ, so even though there's not any new, deep doctrine, it touched my heart.
I learned so much about Christ. I now keep this book by my bed and read a little each night so I can learn more and more about how to become more like him.
