Mimi Clark was never going to win the most popular student award. The prolific tattletale seemed to cruise through university life, seeking out rule-breakers so she could bring their sins to the dean’s attention. She probably never thought she’d be murdered for her favorite pastime. Detective Casey certainly didn’t think her daughter, Audrey, would become the prime suspect.
With Casey sidelined from the investigation and feeling helpless to protect Audrey, she hires Swamp Team 3 to investigate, but the case has enough suspects to fill a stadium. Fortune has to sort them out quickly and find a killer before the ADA makes a move that could ruin Audrey’s bright future.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.
Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these "studies," but they kept makers of peroxide in business.
Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful.
She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.
Oh wow I have missed this series so much! This is book 29 in the Miss Fortune series. It is a cozy mystery series.
The book begins with a heartfelt scene between Carter and Fortune. This is where the last book left off. I am so happy that this is included. Although I did want even more Carter in the book.
Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie get a very interesting case. I definitely love this mystery solving trio so much!
I love that Detective Casey is part of the book. And the mystery is very interesting.
I absolutely cannot wait for the next book. This is definitely one of my favorite series. The books always make me smile.
What is there left to be said about this series that hasn't already been said. The next instalment will see the series reach its thirtieth book and they are still going strong with plenty of actions well crafted mystery and the crazy hi jinx which Gertie always manages to get up to. I also love how Ronald (Fortunes next door neighbour) is now an unofficial fourth member of the team, in this book though the stars are definitely the animals ........... especially Merlin, Fortunes cat...........
Great, Fortune said yes. Then, 2 weeks later Carter is moving in. To me there is a lot missing. I would have liked to read about the reactions of Ida Belle, Gertie, Emmaline, Ally, Big, and Little. The reader was not given this. Celia's reaction would have been priceless.
I guess, by now, that Gertie has done so many things that Gertie and the camel did not faze me. I had no inclination to laugh. I knew it was going to be a disaster from the start. Obviously most of the town knew it was not going to turn out well as they were closing their shops and coming out to watch.
The mystery was good. I enjoyed trying to figure out who done it. Gertie actually showed good logic with the sweater incident. She thought the whole thing through beforehand. Something that Fortune or Ida Belle usually does.
To me, the funny part involved Tiny, Merlin, and Rambo, with Ronald thrown in. I actually found myself laughing over that part.
One thing that I do like about Jana DeLeon is that her books are edited. Most of the reading out there seems to have a lot of mistakes even though the authors say they were edited. I did find 1 minor mistake in the book. Toward the end, Tiny was sleeping when Merlin jumped on his head. When the dog raised his head to see what was going on, his name had changed to Rambo. Rambo was nowhere around. He was at Ida Belle's house, not Fortune's.
I was disappointed with the ending. The bad guy(s) should have been caught and all is well. But everything was rather murky. There is no assurance that they will pay for their crime(s). The book did not end with a slam dunk.
I am glad that the author is writing again. I hope for good things for her in the future. I know she has had a rough year.
This is my favorite cozy series. It is a 5-Star read for me, every single time. I can't wait for each new book to come out. This one has the series trademark slapstick humor, a great mystery to solve and wonderful characters. I must admit: I figured it out, but that didn't detract from the book in any way.
When Mimi Clark turns up dead, no one mourned her passing, only that her murder placed her life in the spotlight and exposed some people to unexpected scrutiny. Mimi was the college tattletale and had caught a lot of people in scandalous situations. To say she wasn't popular is an understatement. So, when she is invited to THE party she was surprised and pleased. But unfortunately, it didn't turn out so good when she ends up murdered.
The ADA quickly zeros in on Detective Casey's daughter, Audrey, with little to no evidence. Casey calls Fortune since she has been sidelined from the case. Fortune and Swamp Team 3 are on the case but with tons of suspects and very little evidence to go on they have a lot of work to do. And since the murder took place in Mudbug, the case falls under Carter's jurisdiction which is going to be difficult since Carter and Fortune are newly engaged and now officially living together.
Jana Deleon did it again! The miss fortune book series has been my favorite ever since I read Louisiana Longshot. I was worried about Jana Deleon's ability to write this book because she suffered more than 1 devastating loss and injuries in this past year. My fears were unfounded bc Fortune and swamp team 3 were back in full force. Gertie gertied. For once Celia didn't flash her butt, but she was just as big of a horse's behind as always. I'm glad that Tiny and Merlin was a relatively easy transition into being roomies. The Fortune books never fail to make me chuckle. I even named my dog Redding. This book had twists and turns, but came to a satisfying conclusion with Fortune getting to display some of her badass skills. That's what I love most about Fortune is she never needs to be rescued, in fact she does the rescuing. Her and Carter are in a great place in their relationship. I'm so happy that I got to read about characters I truly love. I hope Jana never stops writing the Fortune books. I eagerly await the next installment of swamp team 3 shenanigans!
At first glance Sinful Louisiana sounds like a nice small town community, right? Well think again, it's the home of Swamp team 3 aka, miss Fortune, Ida Bell and Gertie. They all have a past that comes in handy when a crime is commited. This is strangely rather often. Coeds and Cattails is the 29th adeventure with these gals and I still laugh out loud reading about them. This time Oficer Casey of the New Orleans police needs their help when her daughter is suspected of committing murder. But hang on, that is not the only big thing happening in this book. I will not tell you and spoil it, you have to read and find out yourself.
This book picked up right where the last one ended. I enjoyed this addition to the series so much. One of my favorites. There are some great zingers, Gertie and critter shenanigans and mysteries. I also love the direction Carter and Fortune's relationship is going. Highly recommend. I may update with better review, as I stayed up to finish. Couldn't put it down.
Absolutely love this series and the characters! Always lifts my spirits and has me cracking up which is much needed at times. Thank you Jana for your creative mind!
I'm an avid reader ad I read many different genres. There are two series that I actively watch or new books, Miss Fortune is one of them. They are my feel good reads. I love the characters, even Celia, because we all need someone to hate, right?
Coeds and Cattails did not disappoint. It had the laughs, it had the action. I don't want to include any spoilers so I will just say Gertie, Gertied.
I recommend this book to anyone that wants to laugh, that likes action and cozy mysteries. You can't go wrong if you want a feel good mystery.
So much fun at first, even though the 'stupid' is impossible to miss, which comes across as sloppy story crafting. Just saying, the setup and situations seem lazy, repetitive.
This is another story that hits heavy on convolution and tedious steps, and too light on fun events.
The reader also wonders, are the errors throughout intentional? Are they some sort of code or Easter Egg setup?
Another great scene in Ch 11, a good reason to slog through. Although the scene substitutes a 'stupid' MC action in place of a classic Gertie blunder, which is a bit of a letdown.
The stupid piles on. Isn't it long past time for MC to own who she has become, including flaws and character weaknesses?
Too much of the info and plans are coming straight out of the MC's mouth, with the other characters barely serving as foils.
It leaves the story feeling like a rough draft. Readers might have expected all of these slips and misses to be worked out of a final version, but that wasn't done here.
Twenty-nine books in, Sinful still has that come-home feel with its quirky locals, fast banter, and Swamp Team 3 doing their chaotic best. The familiar charm is intact, but the mystery beats feel recycled enough that pages start to blur, and the tension never quite lands like it used to. The result is cozy, competent, and comfortable but rarely surprising.
I’ve read this Jana Deleon installment faithfully just like I had the other twenty-eight books, like showing up for a long-running sitcom that’s become comfort viewing. I know the rhythms, the banter, the hijinks, the swamp shenanigans. There’s a warm familiarity to it all. But somewhere in the last few installments, I felt myself drifting. I’d read the first few chapters, hop over to the reveal, and return only to realize I’d already walked these narrative footsteps a dozen times before. It felt like déjà vu in camo boots.
Coeds and Cattails isn’t a bad book. Not even close. The humor is still sharp, the characters still feel like old friends, and the mystery checks all the cozy boxes. But as I turned the pages this time, something shifted. Instead of the fizzy fun I used to inhale in a single sitting, I felt myself reading out of loyalty rather than excitement. The pattern, the dependable, comforting pattern, finally started feeling a little too familiar.
And honestly? That’s okay. Authors grow, readers change, and sometimes long-term reading relationships come to natural, gentle endings. This being Jana’s first book after the tragic loss of her husband, there’s an undeniable bittersweetness that hangs around the edges. You can feel the effort, the professionalism, the commitment to fans. But as a reader, I think this is where my journey with Miss Fortune gracefully ends. A friendly, fond farewell. No drama, no swamp chase, no fireworks. Just… thank you for the ride.
Would I Recommend It? If you’re still loving the series rhythm, you’ll enjoy this one. It delivers exactly what longtime fans expect. For me personally, the spark has dimmed, and that’s okay. I’m stepping away with gratitude.
Goodbye, bayou! Your turn Have you ever reached book twenty-something and realized the magic had shifted from surprise to comfort? Tell me the series you loved long and let go. Did you ever circle back?
As usual, this starts off with Gertie on her Marijuana addicted camel that gets terrified at the sound of church bells and takes a wild run through town, then following Ceilia into the church terrorizing a newborn baptismal with the doors locked. From there, it is one constant laugh after another, even through the tracking down of a murder. Detective Casey that has helped Fortune out on several occasions has called Fortune in great distress since her daughter is the prime suspect in a murder and the ADA is holding a grudge against Casey for blowing his case apart by exposing the real killer. A filthy rich family is trying to marry off their youngest daughter at 19 years old to a man well in his sixties for financial prosperity and position, so she and her friends are doing things to get money but mistakenly point the finger at Stephanie, Casey's daughter. It is one thing after another with laughs almost every other page.
All fans of Jana DeLeon know the tragedy’s she’s had to deal with this past year. So we patiently waited for her to be able to start writing again. Boy was it worth it. From the very first lines I was pulled right back into Sinful. Coeds and Cattails literally took off where book 28 ended. Then took off from there. Most of the usual cast of characters were either present or mentioned. The story was great. As usual there were several possible bad guys. But we don’t know for sure until the end. I believe every fan of the Miss Fortune series will love this book. If you are just discovering the series do yourself a favor and start with book 1. You won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend Coeds and Cattails. I wonder if Cattails could also mean Cat tails. 😜😁😁
This is a twisty one! I always love these books and the zany Gertie moment. Although I wish for more of the side characters like Manny & Allie, I know every book can't have every character.
Carter & Fortune are officially engaged and beginning their life together. I love this!
Then a great side character calls because her college daughter has been accused of murdering a snitch of a coed.
The ending wasn't as satisfying as I would've liked it to be, but I also realize this sometimes happens in real life.
Over all, I loved it as a great chapter in the series. Jana has had a terrible year and I appreciate the talent she has for taking her bad and giving us great! The dedication made me cry.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
How is it that I’m still discovering books I read in 2025 that I didn’t do reviews for?
Anyway, I was completely surprised when I saw this release drop on Amazon. Was not sure when the author would release her next book after loosing her husband, but was very delighted when I saw this.
I love these characters, and while the cases seem to get odder and more outlandish as Fortune outgrows the town of Sinful (for her cases), I find I miss the Celia heavy plots set in Sinful with Manny as backup and Big and Little sniffing out connections. Still, I was very happy to dig into this one as the final cliffhanger of book 28 just needed an answer.
Can’t wait to get the audiobook when it’s released, and now its just a waiting game for book 30.
The return of Fortune and crew welcomes readers back with a tricky puzzle of murder and deceit. The book started with a Gertie stunt involving a camel, a priest, and a nun.(No this isn't a joke, it's real life in Sinful!) And in typical Gertie style, that's only the beginning... When murder rears it's gruesome head, Fortune is hired to clear a New Orleans detective's daughter. Hilarious Gertie moments, unexplained odd behaviors, and college students in way over their heads all combine to make this one of the best mysteries these ladies ever solved! Fabulous series and an exceptionally great story!
Another great book in this series. Always humor, excitement and a good mystery. In this one a student from a local college is killed at an exclusive party put on by a girl from a very wealthy NOLA family. The student, Mimi, is very unpopular as she is a snitch and has gotten professors fired and students expelled. A note found on her computer implicates Detective Casey's daughter, Audrey. Casey contacts Fortune as the ADA doesn't like her and is likely to railroad Audrey. Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie go to work to find the real killer. Carter is also investigating as the crime happened in his jurisdiction. Love this series!
OOOOh Fortune Redding and the crew are BACK!! I've missed them, they're like family after 29 books now. I hope they go on forever. Coeds and Cattails is a SUPER, awesome, THRILLING, mystery filled with Gertie antics in the beginning--omg she can get into some of the CRAZIEST stuff which of course brings the reader right into it with her. A camel, Father Michael and a nun were all involved in Gertie's shenanigans that kick off the book. This book is soooo very very goooooood!!! I'll be rereading it b/c it's always better the second time around--like gumbo.
Thank you Jana Deleon!! for another THRILLING adventure with my besties.
Solid 4.5 with a round up for the sheer consistency and fun in each of the books in the series. This one has a twisted investigation as the team tries to determine who murdered a co-ed and then set up a friend's daughter to take the fall. Plenty of potential suspects since the victim was not well liked. The first scene completes the ending of book 28 when Carter proposes to Fortune. Their ability to work the same murder from different directions is put to the test here. The usual characters are involved and Gertie has an explosive (literally) incident or two. Definitely a few laughs to be had and enjoyment in the reading.
After an extended absence from writing due to an early and totally unexpected passing of her dear husband, René, Jana has provided the next adventure of Fortune Redding that was action packed, filled with twists, turn and plot spins that kept you turning pages to the very end. I know René must be so proud of her.
Fortune, Ida and Gertie are hired to investigate the death of a college student, by a close friend at the NOLA PD. Her daughter, A criminology student, is accused of the murder but the facts don't add up. Money and power are mixed up in this mess and the team must act quickly before more than one innocent person goes to prison.
This book was well worth waiting for. This book is about a collage snitch who winds up dead after attending a party held by one of the affluent students and straight A's student who is wrongly accused. Fortune and Swamp Team3 are hired to investigate the crime. This book was funny in places, so much so I had tears running down my face from laughing so much. Gertie always manages to get in and out of strife with her flukes. This time was no different, one involving a nun and a camel and Another involving Merlin (a cat), Tiny (a rottweiler) and Rambo (a puppy under training) and blue energy drink. I had trouble putting this book down. I can't wait till this comes out in audio.
Coeds and Cattails, the 29th book in the Miss Fortune Mysteries by Jana Deleon, is absolutely the book I needed right now, full of fun, shenanigans, and everything we've come to expect of this stellar author. The mystery is complex, the characters are relatable and entertaining, and there are many suspects from which to choose who dunnit. The book is superbly written, with plenty of humour and suspense, which makes it easy to escape into for as long as it takes. Bravo on another wonderful book!
Fortune Redding is one smart lady. She knows when someone is lying and when something just doesn't spin right. In this latest case she puts both of these abilities to work for her client. Her two investigative assistants, Ida and Gertie bring the logic and the hilarity with the help of 2 canines, A superior feline, spectacularly robed neighbor, A prodigious amount of coffee, and some of Nora's elixir, and a church-going camel. In other words, Swamp Team 3 is on the case!
Reading Jana Deleon's books is like eating your favorite treat that you can't stop until it's finished then when it finishes you cry because there's no more we weren't disillusioned your book was great funny as always kept you on your toes the twist and turns are fantastic it's good to see and hear about the other characters. You keep us laughing and wanting more, times when we most need it God bless you always
Jana's done it again. A story filled with not only mystery but lots of fun characters. I do admit I shouldn't read her stories while waiting for my grandkids to finish practice because people give you strange looks when you start laughing so much you cry. But with Gertie around you know its going to happen. Thank you for another wonderful adventure Jana. Can't wait for the next one.
2020 bk 136. Despite a period of tragedy, Jana DeLeon has pulled off another wonderful Miss Fortune book filled with mystery, slapstick comedy, steadfast love in many forms, and a read that keeps one hooked into the story. This one I had to read straight through. So many wonderful little twists and turns, but Miss Fortune and her crew of friends pulled it off again! Thank you Jana for this gift.
As always, Gertie is playing with dynamite and Ida is driving like a hurricane. Poor Carter has finally learned how to co-exist with Fortune and her investigative methods. The camel chapter will have you holding your sides crying with laughter! No one but Gertie could pull such stunts. As usual, Ronald is extremely stressed over everyone’s lack of “appropriate” clothing.
How is this the 29th Miss Fortune mystery already?? I love this series and all the trouble that the girls get into and this one was no exception. Hilarious! My favorite quote still has to be "Hail Fortune full of strength"... Looking forward to more of this series and thankful that this one just came out despite all that the author had had going on. We appreciate you and all the joy (and justice) you bring!
