The eighties brought us a revival of the pulp detective franchise with the way being led by Black Lizard's great reissues of Thompson, Whittington, Goodis, and Willeford. New pulp detective novels were also issued as part of this great renaissance, although many of these new pulp detective authors are not widely known today. Henderson had been writing speculative pulp fiction for decades, but now he put out his Jack Hagee series of four novels, three of which are currently available on kindle.

Hagee, an ex military op, operates out of NYC and, in homage to Spillane's Mike Hammer, also can erupt in an explosion of violence, leaving the battlefield strewn with blood and guts. This novel has Hagee singlehandedly taken on two dozen members of a Chinatown street gang, on the trail of a serial killer, and taking on a corrupt establishment. Dirty pictures, crooked cops, and nosy reporters round out the story.

Hagee is a wonderful development for a Hardboiled detective and few hit the pavement with such gusto. Overall, an enjoyable read although it could be a smoother ride. There were points where I found the story didn't always flow well. Of note is the great Robert Maguire cover. The kindle version of the book is oddly formatted and doesn't quite fit an iPad screen correctly.

My first Jack Hagee mystery. Character way too unbelievable ... If he took his shirt off your would expect a bid S on the front. Plot had some potential but a little thin.
