DARK FAMILY SECRETS. A HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE. A GIRL WHO SEES THE DEAD. WELCOME TO FEROZ ISLAND.

Seventeen-year-old Gracelyn Lassiter has been hiding in her aunt’s house for four years—since her mother plunged from the cliffs at Feroz Lighthouse, leaving her without her home, her best friend, or answers. Now, her father’s burned to death in his sailboat and left a

“Your mother didn’t jump, I pushed her.”

The trauma triggers Gracelyn’s ability to see spirits so real she can’t tell who’s human and who’s a ghost—except for the gray-veiled Shadow Man who begs her to return to Feroz and find her mother's journal.

When her cruel cousin posts his confession on social media, Feroz seems like a safe place to escape. And if Gracelyn can see ghosts, she can conjure her mother’s spirit and hear the truth from her own lips. But her lighthouse haven is awash with spirits, secrets, and lies—and the closer Gracelyn gets to the truth, the more she realizes the dead aren’t the only ones desperate to keep the past in the past.

THE SHADOW MAN is a new Young Adult novel by B.C. author, Harper Carr, inspired by her experiences working for the Coast Guard as a lighthouse keeper on the West Coast of Canada.

I was able to read an ARC from the author. This paranormal mystery hits with energy and emotion immediately. The opening scene with Gracelyn’s cousin and nasty friend kicks things off, instantly followed by the death of Gracelyn’s father on the anniversary of her mother’s suicide. This pace continues as she deals with suddenly being able to see spirits and returning to her island birthplace. She reunites with her childhood friend and she falls fast and deep. But there’s still the mystery of her parents’ deaths as clues accumulate that not all is as it seems on the surface. I enjoyed the tale, the descriptions of the spirits, the beauty of the settings, and the twist at the end, including that we’re left to imagine the ‘what happens next’s.

In The Shadow Man, Gracelyn Lassiter is haunted by her mother’s untimely death and the fallout from it that has left no part of her world untouched. And when a devastating fire causes another crushing loss, her cobbled-together life is once again blown apart. With themes of betrayal, lost love found, resilience and forgiveness, The Shadow Man explores the painful secrets of Gracelyn’s past to unearth a path forward.

The Shadow Man explodes out of the gate with a nuanced story that is part mystery, part paranormal, with a touch of romance, and non-stop action. Carr’s writing is excellent, as is her pacing and her ability to stir emotions all the while continually upping the tension. The Shadow Man will keep you entranced from the first page until the last.

What if you started seeing ghosts?
Gracelyn is seventeen and has lost her mother in a horrible way. When her father
also dies, he leaves her a message that changes everything. She returns to the
island where her mother’s death—now a mystery—begs to be solved and to the
lighthouse where her family once lived. Here, not only does she reunite with a
beautiful boy she once knew, she also explores a power that has begun to
manifest—mediumship.
This is a great story for anyone who loves ghosts, mysteries, and lighthouses.
Carr gives us a beautiful experience of what its like to live and work in a
lighthouse in a spooky story with a unique heroine.

The intensity of this story carries across every aspect-- the plot, the
character development, the elements paranormal, mysterious, and deeply
personal. Everything is intertwined in twisty, interesting, sometimes
heartbreaking ways here, and it makes for an immersive and impactful read.

Well-paced Paranormal Mystery

I was honored to receive an ARC from this author. I have read books by her under another pen name and loved them. Her style is like a painting in words and compelling.

What I enjoyed about this book was the realism of the characters against the paranormal context. The detailed knowledge of the author for the various subject matters lent a foundation of truth that sparked credibility into the ethereal. The blending of worlds was masterful and added to the painted landscape of an isolated landscape. I felt it was beautifully done.

There were things I didn't like, but they were character choices and nothing I can divulge without spoilers. I will say that Seraph is horrible and though I don't believe in spanking children, she gives me pause to reconsider that stance. Mercy is someone I want to have compassion for because I can understand her situation, but I honestly lack empathy. It is Caleb and Gracelyn that my heart goes out to.

I recommend this book. It is full of twists and mysteries. The story is appropriate for young adult and beyond. It has something for romance readers, paranormal ghostie fans, historical fiction buffs, and just those who love a good who-done-it! This was a fun and exciting read that I hope is the start to a series!
