If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, then this book will tick every box for you. Every single detail in the book seems intentionally placed and integral to the story, keeping your attention from wanting to stray for even a second. The gradual revelation of details and backstory keep the story intriguing as it unfolds. Although there are lots of characters to keep track of, each character is so thoroughly developed that you care deeply about all of them. It doesn't make it confusing, but rather makes you care so much more about their individual fate at the end of the book. It inspires tears and fears, two things that confirm how much it emotionally resonates with an audience. The attention to detail in every description made me feel like I was watching a movie in my mind - absolutely recommend this book.

This was a true thrill ride. I read this book in one sitting, which doesn't happen often. The characters were so likable and relatable. A cool, original story with plenty of twists up until the very end. Highly recommend!

A Haunting Tale of Touch and Consequence...

Russell Rothberg's debut novel "In Darkness" is a disturbing look at human nature through the prism of supernatural horror. Set in the deceptively regular village of Creeks Manor, the plot revolves around a mystery newcomer whose touch serves as a catalyst, compelling individuals to act on their darkest, most hidden urges. The idea converts regular physical contact into a means of unleashing chaos, making commonplace interactions potentially fatal.

Drawing on his television experience, Rothberg creates a taut tale that combines psychological horror and societal satire. The plot proceeds like a domino effect of growing tensions, as the Creeks Manor residents battle with buried impulses that have been forcefully brought to the surface. While the idea is otherworldly, the true horror is found in the investigation of what lies behind polite society's surface. The book strikes a mix between dark humor and genuine tension, leading to a finale that challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature. Highly recommended.

In Darkness is the first novel from Russell Rothberg, but it reads like something from the hands of a seasoned author who knows the horror genre.
A stranger has come to the small town of Creeks Manor, someone who can unlock peoples' deepest, darkest thoughts with a mere touch and cause them to act out those base desires. In a manner reminiscent of the stories by Stephen King and Dean Koontz, the town quickly descends into a boiling cauldron of violence, fear, and mistrust. The only question is, will anyone be able to stop it?
The book takes off like a speeding car and Rothberg never lets up on the throttle, a testament to the writing skills he honed while writing for hit television shows. Fans of small town horror will want to add this one to their lists!

A chilling and exciting book!
In Russell Rothberg's brilliant book IN DARKNESS, the town of Creeks Manor conjures up destiny's darkest actions! The book has the deadliest of convictions, ruthless outcomes, and addictive twists and turns. The writing is sharp, layered, equally funny and terrifying, while the concept soars toward life and death, violence within humanity, and the deepest blackness in our souls, all played out in a small town of undeserving and deserving victims. Dark thoughts have a plan realized, the novel's caveat of the unleashed secrets in all of us. Rothberg's hypnotic characters fascinate and move the heart, his stunning writing a fevered and deadly touch. I highly recommend!!

Do you want a fun, creepy, ride? This book is a page turner…damn my 9-5 job!

The story is riveting. What happens in our deepest psyche, who do we have resentment for? Rothberg, a wonderful storyteller, gives us characters we champion and understand. And a villain who helps to say a lot about our society today.

I can’t wait for his next book!

IN DARKNESS is as good as it gets. First time author, Russell Rothberg, nails this fast-paced horror novel with intricate, compelling characters and powerful imagery of a townspeople gone mad. Wildly entertaining with a provocative denouement, the novel proposes that we all possess some form of darkness, but will we act on it? Bring on the sequel.

This was a fantastic horror debut! From its bone chilling opening to the jaw dropping finale, In Darkness takes you on a wonderful ride with a rich, nuanced cast of characters, exciting twists, and plenty of gore. It’s a great take on the idea that there’s a little evil in all of us. It’ll keep you up at night but the lost hours of sleep are well worth it!

Although I am not a huge fan of the Horror genre, I read this on the recommendation of a friend and enjoyed it. For those who do enjoy a bit of blood and gore, there's plenty of that, but there's also an engaging plot and a good dose of humor too. The writing is very visual- I could see this as a miniseries!
