Good action, fast paced, but plot wise this arc isn't doing much for me. I hope we go back to regular crime fighting. Kind of tired of all the mysterical stuff.
Some really great art and action make up this issue. The story doesn't expand much but I did appreciate the focus on Cassie and the shadow of her mother. I am curious where this is ultimately going.
Honestly outside of this series I have not read a lot of other Cass series, but I am seeing what other people are saying about the direction of this story. I still find the art and action great, but how close was Cass to Shiva anyway? We are at the point where she is hallucinating her mother trying to get her to kill? Is it possible there is an outside force corrupting her here? I was with it to the point that Cass would look past Nyssa’s untrustworthiness to avenge her mother and find a way to get back at the unburied, which would make sense as to her seeing the truth for the first time of Nyssa lying last issue make sense, but now we are going into the abandoning her brother and potentially killing people. I do still think she is so highly trained in swords that she probably didn’t kill anyone this issue, but they are all off panel so who knows!
We jump into this issue directly from the end of the last with Cass disguised alongside a Samsara strike team, including her brother Tenji, Angel breaker, Aruna Jayesh, and Aruna Shende, as they all sneak inside a buried outpost to destroy their blue poppy stash and potentially end the war. But what they found was not a war outpost, but a thriving community for the unburied. Filled with women and children alongside fighters. Through one of the fair puppet shows last issue, Cass realized Nyssa was lying about where Samsara came from, as it was really taken from the unburied by Nyssa and her father. But all of that is thrown to the wind this issue as Cass notices Kalden…the unburied who killed her mother! Suddenly the voice of Shiva whispers in her ear telling her to kill him, and luckily Kalden is blind or he would have seen Cass lunging for him and Tenji knocking her out of the way. Score one for Tenji getting that real life experience, not many can knock Cass around. He is able to snap Cass out of it and remind her that they do not kill and need to continue the mission, Angel breaker has even found the stash and is ready to destroy it once they regroup so they can all get back together and escape. I do still find it odd with how capable a fighter Kalden is that he didn’t notice the fighters heading for him, which reinforces my idea (alongside the end of this issue) there is more at work here than we can see. As Cass surprisingly gives the cold shoulder to Tenji and they continue on the mission, they suddenly loose Cass once again when Aruna reports in that they need to move without them. The shapeshifter is planning something off to the side, and out of everyone Cass knows how to spot and track them down. Cass ends up following as they shift into the form of Kalden and sneak into the holiest location of the city, only to head for a shrine and attempt to take poppy seeds, which are held separate from the rest as they are seen as holy. Cass surprises Aruna and is displeased to learn that Nyssa further ordered Aruna to acquire the seeds do they could grow their own poppies. Just another lie stacked up and discovered int the worst place and timing possible. Unfortunately the other group isn’t fairing as well as Tenji accidentally tripped an alarm and now they have been found. Angel breaker is done waiting and deploys a handful of shuriken bombs to destroy the poppy stash and start making her very loud escape. As the world around them is exploding into blue flame, Cass runs after Aruna to get the seeds and stop Nyssa from getting her own stockpile. As everyone rejoins in the chaos, Cass ends up having to put down a few guards, in a surprisingly bloody but hopefully non lethal fashion all while her mother whispers in her ear. Cass finally yells out for her to be quiet, and as she finally for Tenji safely…suddenly the building next to her explodes and she is thrown through a window. But when she gets up she suddenly finds a large mysterious throne with a shrouded unmoving figure sitting in top. She doesn’t have long to question what is happening before guards rush in, Tenji wakes up, and just like the other members of their group the fight their way out. Cass is able to slice the poppy seeds out of Aruna’s hands, and with no time to her more they all make a run for it, with Angel breaker caving in the area behind them. But the issue ends on a mysterious note. Kalden seems to wield a blue flame as he calls out to a mysterious master. Everything has gone according to plan for THEM, they only believe the poppies have been destroyed and luckily they didn’t get away with any seeds as that would have been bad. But as the issue comes to an end and as Kalden is grabbing the torch it almost seems like he isn’t talking. It is coming from Kalden but it feels like a voice is being channeled through him, speaking of the day that Samsara will soon fall. Hmmmmm.

it was fairly confusing in terms of keeping who is doing what and where everyone is and their motivations and allegiances are. wasn’t a fan of that and the payoff feels meh.
