I love how the first issue in the year one storyline slowly eases us into the world, introducing us to the premise of each of the members of the JSA so we can see how the story forms together and these characters come together…then this issue takes the rest of them and slaps them on top like “oh yeah these guys too,” LMAO. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and love all these characters. We can’t spend an issue breaking down each character, that’s what the after notes section of the new history series is for lol, but it is a little jarring to have all these characters popping up now. But jumping into the issue itself we start from Jay’s perspective in Keystone City, 1940, as he chases down a stolen truck loaded with goods and armed gunmen in the drivers seat. Typical day for the flash and he punches their lights out to get them to stop. But what the cops find with the loot is troubling. A lot of explosives and an address for their nazi HQ in the states in Gotham. Luckily Flash has the express route to take over there. Speaking of Gotham, Alan Scott Green Lantern is currently at the apartment of his now deceased friend as he waits for the cops and the special investigator…Jim Corrigan. As Jim takes a look around he sees the schematics GL’s friend was working on, as GL explains he was an engineer working on the subway tunnel expansion for Starco. The rest of the cops have things covered here, Jim suggests GL and him take a late night expedition to the tunnels. While beneath Gotham, GL is able to light the way for them, prompting Jim to ask if his ring is magic based. GL does go into detail, instead prompting to ask Jim if he believes in magic. Heh. As they explore the tunnels Alan realizes something is wrong, all of the metal braces are flawed as if they were designed to fail. Suddenly GL gets a sense something is approaching them and as he shines the light down the tunnel he suddenly sees…Jay! Turns out those nazis he stopped also had schematics for this area and he decided to check it out, and he is so happy to see GL. Jay has now turned the other cheek and started acting like Johnny was to him last issue, lol, just begging for a team up. Obviously some nazis are planning to collapse the Gotham subway system, but as the two heroes talk Jim stands behind him with a new green light coming to his eyes. A new voice enters, watching all of this unfold, mentioning that they cannot intervene and must play out as FATE would have it. That’s right, a whole slew of magic users are watching Jim, worrying for the day when spectre comes back to either save them or destroy them. This group includes doctor fate, Dan Garrett Blue Beetle, Madame Xanadu, Giovanni Zatara, and Doctor Occult! What a legit group!

But so far I’ve only focused on the big part of the story, let’s check in on the other groups. Hourman and sandman are still exploring the giant chemical tube halls of Starco. Hourman can’t help but think his formula is flowing through the tubes, but suddenly they come across one tube that isn’t empty and has a full person floating inside. He’s still alive, but they can’t remove him without knowing how the chemical is effecting him. As they move deeper into the facility they come across a large open room with more vats of chemicals on the walls, but one operating table in the middle with a very dead looking man strapped down. Suddenly the two heroes jump out of the way as a ball of energy comes flying at them. A voice rings out that they cannot never leave and should have never come to this place of death, somehow the classic JSA “villain” Cyclotron is down here as well and he doesn’t look happy! If you know about JSA lore, he is very important to some other characters (cough cough atom) development. Speaking of atom! He is still creeping around in Gotham and spying on the group of nazis, only to be caught by Wonder Woman in the rafters of the building he was spying from. She is quick to note that even for how small he is, he is quite loud and would have been caught if they didn’t enjoy talking so loud, lol. But this isn’t just Wonder Woman, this is Hippolyta! As it’s now canon she ran over to the states during the war instead of Diana. Hey it’s better than that one post crisis Diana insert character, lol, and she towers over Al Pratt. Turns out she has been tailing these fascists for weeks and wants to find out who is backing them. Atom hasn’t come empty handed either though, apparently the goons down there are expecting a but delivery from a private airship in a few nights. Wonder Woman prefers to work alone, bower we is not objecting to Atom joining her, and as she leaps off the building she promises they will meet again. Last but not least let’s check in on the hawks! Last we left them off, Shiera was captured in a net by sportsmaster and held at gunpoint by Satanna. Luckily she has a sword and shield and was able to break free and take them all down pretty easily by the time Carter showed up. But instead of tying them up, the pair decided to head back and get Carter suited up and let them go. They proceeded to track the group back to their airship, and Shiera proposed letting them take off and following them to discover what they’re really up to. The lost temple of Feithera will have to wait.

That was enjoyable and a great introduction to Wonder Woman. The various storylines are coming together and we should see a bigger payoff next time.
