Rate this book
From fire and flood, to air and earth, the voices in ‘Elemental’ rise from the heart of Barnsley, each piece a spark, a current, a breath or a seedling, bound together in our 2026 anthology.

Meet a man surviving in a world overcome by apocalyptical snow, and the team who endeavour to rescue a young girl carried out to sea.

Discover a future world where mermaids are harvested for their tissues with devastating results, and the poignant story of a woman retreading her footsteps at the coast with her beloved for the last time.

Read the beguiling tale of Sorrell as she makes her own special connection with the earth, and share the autobiographical account of a unique tree which will forever hold a special place in our nation’s hearts.

Step into a mythical world where the people of the air, the ‘Aerathi’, vanish without trace, leaving three tribes in their wake, and visit Skarsby on the night a blaze tears through the promenade and a cast of unreliable narrators provide more questions than there are answers.

Herein, stories smoulder, tales turn like the tide, characters take flight and poetry takes root. These writings by the twelve members of ‘Barnsley Creative Writers’ writing group will immerse you in nature and remind you of our smallness within it.

This anthology is a beautiful collection of literature from the Barnsley Creative Writers Group.

Exploring the themes of the four elements, fire, earth, air, and water. At times, it reads like a layered collection of human observations told through nature’s perspective, which gives the anthology a very reflective and emotional quality.

The anthology is packed with inspirational pieces, alongside a collaborative piece by all the writers at the end. That group piece was exquisite, and it was incredible to see how such different writers could come together to create something so harmonious and emotionally cohesive. There is also a huge variety of writing techniques and styles throughout, meaning there is genuinely something for everyone to connect with.

I found myself using this collection as a source of inspiration and comfort while processing some of the heavier topics explored within its pages. It is a truly beautiful anthology, written by an incredibly talented group of writers.

Earth and Water were my favourite sections, as I personally connected with them the most. However, special shoutouts go to Lucy Brighton, Natalie Horner, and Mac Mckenchnie. Your pieces were outstanding.

A collection of wonderful poetry and prose based around the 4 elements. Elemental explores human emotion and the wonder of the world in a eclectic array of talented writers.
The last story was particularly interesting and amazing as the writers had one topic and blindly wrote a piece each that was then put together to create longer story.
If you are an avid reader, and a lover of stories from different perspectives then here is a full anthology for you to explore. A masterpiece.
