I liked the idea of this book-a supernatural evil spirit murdering the staff and residents of a retirement home, and the survivors banding together to fight it. I didn't realise it was only 62 pages or to be honest I wouldn't have bought it-but that was my fault for not checking the number of pages before purchase. I wasn't aware from the short description online that is was a comedy horror, as I'm not a great fan of those books, but anyway I bought it.
I really hated the characters and that was an issue from the start. A bunch of sex mad oldies who spend their entire time as high as kites was a bad start for me. Their personalities did not appeal, as they seemed to cover every stereotype known to man. The one black resident was determined that everyone there was a racist and comes from a background of 'hoodoo'. The Donald Trump voter among them was a right wing lunatic convinced that Biden was coming to kill her. The white residents are all deemed racist. The racist staff member is a drug dealer. The Christian preacher is an idiot that everyone hates. The loud ex military guy is a sex obsessed drunk who calls Obama 'Osama', the cop is a useless drug taking porn addict and so it goes on *sigh*
I get that it's meant to be comedy but the obnoxious cast and the offensive 'jokes' and 'witty one-liners' throughout fall totally flat and had me rolling my eyes every time one appeared. Every time something is described, a simile is gleefully thrown in for no good reason, and not in very pleasant ways. 'As much use as Kanye West at the Holocaust Memorial' and 'crumbling down faster than a Malaysian airliner' are just two unpleasant examples of the humour. I wasn't impressed by them and they aren't the worst offerings, which I'm not sharing here.
I found this dreadful, if I'm being honest. The writing was ok and the basis of a good story might have been there if it had been written as a horror novella. The over the top attempts at humour left this falling way short on every level. I won't be reading anything else by the author.
