The Nighthawks lie silent as the scion of an evil god cries out before its birth. The gaze of the abyss… The whispers of terror… Are they signs of a boon or a curse? Unfathomable grey eyes are shot with blood as Saint Selena’s ashes darken the land of dreams. As the tragedy unfolds, the glint in the clown’s eye is but a fleeting tear. Fantasies are products of the pen and every story is a deception…
Many thanks to Bunny for joining me for this buddy read!
This volume concludes the first ARC - The Clown - as we follow Klein's search for the house with the red chimney, or rather, the master mind behind all the plots and coincidences that were slowly coming together. His search largely feels limited to his spare time as he continues to get involved with various cases of murder and super natural. There's also a big focus on his achieving the next step in his sequence.
The first half is fairly slow and it isn't entirely clear what we are building up to. We didn't get to see all that much of the tarot club and, instead, Mr Azik becomes increasingly more involved. And then the pacing picks up and so much happens. Even though we didn't get to see much of the Tarot Club, once they were involved again, it was nice to actually see them get more involved in the heat of the action. It was good to see Klein forming more alliances from different backgrounds outside of his work and the Tarot Club.
The ending chapters were quite explosive. This is the first book that feels like this world will truly claim its casualties and some scenes dipped even further into gore. Whilst I'd argue that this still mostly feels like gothic, there are definitely moments that feel more aligned with an outright horror story. The ending is bittersweet but perfectly executed - it brings this first ARC to full circle and I am ready to see where the next ARC takes us.
Really interesting ending. Plot twists that make perfect sense in the way this world works. Seeing the main character struggle, fail, and LEARN. Great end to the first Arc of the series. Set up, world building, characters, and just enough mystery to keep you engaged and guessing the whole way through. So many kudos to the animators of the series. One of the best adaptations I've ever seen. So much info and important scenes and they did a wonderful job of covering it all with a relatively short season. I'm even more impressed after reading the book. I do wish the book included more art though. Praise the Fool!
After reading this volume I was so hooked I hunted down a pdf of the rest of the series (which for those who don’t know is like 12 000+ pages long) and basically did nothing but read for the next two weeks. This is partly cause it’s so long and I wanted to finish it as soon as possible but I was also very addicted.
A perfect start - Flawless execution and purposeful worldbuilding
The conclusion to the Clown arc or Tingen arc, wrapping up the first volume of the web novel of the web novel, or book 3 of the physical editions has easily been one of the best series i have read.
The intricacies of the story are handled perfectly. The author respects the reader and his own intelligence, there is no artificial withholding of information that should be obvious to the characters for a cheap twist. Because the logic is sound, you actually have the chance to piece together what is happening. Watching the overarching plan finally come to conclusion, and seeing the Nighthawks struggle to prevent it was amazing.
I have no complaints about the current cast or the side storie. Every single part feels like it has a purpose, everything is made with the intent of serving the plot further down the line.
Overall, an incredible read and a must read for fans of the cthulu/mysticism fans
Amps up the stakes and the mysticism that was built up in Clown II and at some point just barrels through towards a conclusion that's still shocking even if you saw it in the animation. Given where the previous book randomly ended, there is a very clear conclusion to this book.
This all just seems like the end of the prologue to an epic story. If this were a video game only now would the title screen pop up.
The ending almost broke me. This is by far the best book I have ever read. Everything tying together was written so beautifully that it rivals the similar sequence in The Count of Monte Cristo. I was incredibly stunned, sad, joyous, happy, and every other emotion in between as I read this book.
It's so well plotted and well written. All the little threads are coming together now in this one, and it was perfect. I read it in only two days! That doesn't happen with me often. The worst thing now is that I have to wait until September to read the next one! TT^TT
Really good conclusion to the first arc. Pretty depressing as well but I can't wait to see where the story goes from here. I love every part with Audrey and her dog. A lot of questions were answered with this one and it all made sense.
