Ali Ryan is a tough-girl detective with a persistent streak that makes her an excellent crime solver. In this mystery/thriller Ali is determined to prove an apparent suicide at her sister's college is actually murder. Part of the story is told from Ali's first person point of view. Here the author does a very good job at depicting what is in the young cop's mind and you really get to like her and cheer her on towards the middle and end of the book. The other part of the story is a third person narrative surrounding the actual murderer who has some serious problems to say the least. He is definitely a bad guy you love to hate. At first I was concerned with switching back and forth, but the story is really interesting and the plot moves forward in a way that it did not take away from the experience of the novel at all. I would highly recommend this to crime novel lovers. Hess's take on the female detective story is new and unique and I think Ali Ryan has a lot to offer as a character. The supporting characters give a little comic relief which is nice when reading a book that keeps you on edge like this one does! Awesome job Andrew Hess I look forward to reading more from you!

There is one thing that I love about having a book blog. All the new authors I have met and all the new books I get to bring you. Well this is one of those authors and books .

It is a mystery book that takes us into the life of Ali Ryan. A hard working detective that will do anything to solve the murder. Even when everyone else thinks it is a suicide. Even when the lives of her sister and her are put into danger . She will figure out who the murderer is.

The main character in the book is a woman and the author writes from her point of view very well. He really brings out Ali's aggressive and assertive sides very well. She is one tenacious woman to the chagrin of her long suffering partner and the lieutenant. The other main character and Ali's nemesis is the serial killer Nick/ Mark and boy Andrew made that boy twisted. He may be a functioning member of society but with a twisted mind like that, he should be committed into the nearest mental health facility and left there. I loved reading both points of view in this book. Why you ask? Well l will tell you , the author did a great job getting into the minds of both characters. Making us cheer for Ali and feel sorry for Mark.

The author takes us down a twisting road . I mean you watch how the characters grow as the author takes them through the hell that they need to go through. I was reading this book well into the night . The author was dropping breadcrumbs along the way, that as you find them you start to put everything together . Other then a couple of spelling errors that kind a threw me off . I couldn't put the book down . I finished it in a day. So if you want a mystery that has a strong female lead and a truly twisted serial killer . This is the book for you . So why not give it a chance, I know you wont be disappointed

I give this book a 4.5 novels

I love reading different genres of books but very rarely do I read a good crime mystery, until now.

Campus Killer is absolutely brilliant. Set around a college campus where nothing bad has ever happened, when suddenly there is a spate of suicides.

Detective Ali investigating the apparent suicides, has a feeling that not all is right and there is more to these people dying.

This is a very intense story, I like how you read from the killers POV you kind of get why the killer is doing what the killer is doing but not the actual reason that's behind murdering these people.

Detective Ali is a hotshot cop promoted to Detective although still quite young, she is a very strong character and won't take any crap.

While reading this book I just couldn't help but feel it should be a movie or tv program it would be amazing. It reminded me of watching CSI or NCIS. It kept me on the edge of my seat and had me shouting at some of the scenes in the book.
Best of all is there is a great big twist and you never see it coming not even a hint of it.
I'm so excited for the next part as the ending is one bloody great big cliffhanger.

Most definitely worth a big 5*****

Plodding and implausible this novel follows an ambitious female detective who is convinced the death of some coeds on a college campus are neither suicides nor accidents. She has little, really nothing to go on other than her gut instincts. She blithely disobeys orders, enlists her coed sister and boyfriend to conduct their own little investigation while she rolls around in bed with her hot mysterious boyfriend and talks her partner into breaking rules. The story lacks suspense and any knowledge of police procedures. While I liked the location of New Paltz, a well known college town in New York state, it fails to compensate for the weak plot and poor writing.

I received a copy of Campus Killer from Loving the Book in exchange for an honest review. This story begins with a young man who has some problems with acceptance from his peers. The love of his life broke up with him and he is now returning to college with a vengeance against those who assisted her with making that decision. He takes on a new look and a new personality in an attempt to get close to his victims, he even takes on a new name! When Detective Ali Ryan gets involved after the first dead body on the college campus is found, she is not convinced that the death is a suicide. Can the detective push her Lieutenant and partner to keep the investigation over? How many incidents will happen before they realize that there may just be a campus killer?

My favorite characters are Detective Ali Ryan and Mark. The detective has a strong head on her shoulders and is usually pretty confident with most cases. After the first murder, everyone rules out homicide, but Ali is just not so sure. She is very brave for being so consistent with the Leiutenant, so much so that she could have lost her job for disobeying orders. Mark, on the other hand—is all over the place. This new persona makes him confident and very dangerous while still able to think quickly on his feet. He has this whole scenario planned out about how he is going to exact his revenge, leaving no trace or evidence of homicide. He is clever, witty and still manages to stay under the radar while being completely in control of his surroundings. To me, he is the perfect bad guy. He is the one that you really just don’t like because he gets under your skin.

In my opinion, this book deserves four stars. I thought that the overall story was thought out and planned really well. The content flowed well and there was an incredible amount of creativity. The story started off quick and maintained its pace until a little over half-way. I found that the pace started to slow down and became inconsistent which I did not really like. I wanted the story to continue with the quick pace instead of dragging on as much as it did. I am overly excited to start the second in this series called Scorned, so for those of you who are keeping a close eye to my reviews—stay tuned! I think that this author is very good and has so much potential to improve, especially grammatically. I look forward to reading more of his other books as well because his creativity and character development have piqued my interest.

~~~~~~~~~~Katheryn's ★★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
Campus Killer by Andrew Hess was a very intense book. We are reading in the papers these days about incidents on campus in different states resulting in death, This read like a road map to how a killer's mind works. It was so creepy how close he was able to get to these college students and to the police officer working the case. You could feel how tough this was on Detective Ali, working a case at a campus that her sister was attending. I know this would have worked my nerve. I found myself getting as frustrated as Alie when she couldn't get the Lieutenant Esposito to believe her when Rachel and Nicole died that they were murdered instead. The incident when Alie was in the hospital and she thought the killer was in there with her was very believable and hard to believe it was a nightmare she was having. Love the close relationship between Allie and Amanda. I have to say I was surprised when I realized who the killer was, but dang the ending was a real shocker!! It makes you eager for the next book. This entire book was a page turner. I caught myself staying up really late reading and also reading in between customers at the office, it was a really hard book to put down. I would give this book 10 stars if I could, but since I can't I will give it 5 stars. Check this book out it is a great read!!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~Dee's ★★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~

This intense detective story takes a different turn from the majority of murder mysteries. The first character we meet is a serial killer as he plans his first murder. With his POV and that of the lead detective, Ali, we have a front row seat in the mental machinations of Mark and the inquiring mind of Ali as she tries to fit the clues together.

The pace was fast moving, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. As the story nears the end, drama increases tenfold with twists and turns in a breathless manner. The last chapter has a bomb blast that was unexpected but is understandable in hindsight. Ends like a Hitchcock movie. Excellent plot and development of characters; mystery and suspense unpredictable and engaging. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars.

I give this book a 4 ½.

I admit that I haven’t read a lot of crime thriller, but if they were all like this one, I think I’d read more. The Campus Killer pulls you in right from the start.

The story follows a hotshot female detective named Ali Ryan as she tries to convince everyone that a recent string of suicides is actually the work of serial killer. Besides the case offering the reader tons of mystery and action, Ali also tries to have a life, which only makes her feel more real.

The story alternates points of view, between Ali and the killer, but we also get a chance to get into the mind of some of the other characters through the narrator who’s tapping us into the killer. It’s an interesting way to see multiple viewpoints of the story coming together. When I first realized that the pov changed I was concerned about being confused, but I wasn’t in the slightest.

My issue with some crime stories I’ve read is that I rarely like the hero, but I liked Ali and I really liked her sister. It was odd for me not to root for the bad guy, but this killer was so whiny that I couldn’t stand him, which only made me like the story more. You know how it goes; characters you love to hate.

The main reason I didn’t give this book a five was because of pacing and the ending. The pacing seemed to speed up and slow down, which isn’t bad, but I felt that it lacked a rhythm that would have it flow better. Of course that could simply be one of my personal odd quirks. Honestly, the book is not hard to read at all.

As for the ending, it isn’t bad either. It’s quite good actually. It’s just not the ending I wanted. Some people want Cinderella to marry the prince and I want her to inherit her own kingdom. So the author and I didn’t have the same ideas for the ending, no big deal.

This is a really good adult “curl up next to a fire and sip something warm” read.

Disclaimer: I received a beta copy of this book for an honest critique and then later purchased the final product.

One of my favorite things about signing up for blog tours is discovering new authors that will forever be added to my favorites list. And Andrew Hess has been added.

This story has it all, a fascinating plot to keep you glued to the book, strong leading characters, and enough realism that you can relate to what is going on. It is an all around heart read from me.

Author Andrew Hess captivated me from the moment I started reading this story. I loved how he moved between the heroine Ali Ryan’s point of view and the killers. Getting lost in both of their heads as they tried to outsmart one another was thrilling. This book is an absolute page turner as Ali Ryan chase after the killer. I could not help but gasp and hold my breath during a few of the scenes.

Ali Ryan is a strong leading lady that did not let everyone else’s comments detour her from what her gut told her. The suicides where not just ‘suicides’ like everyone thought they were murders and she would prove it. I could not read fast enough as she pieced the puzzle together and proved to everyone else she was not crazy.

The killer (I do not want to give things away) did not make many flaws as he picked off the students. But what mistakes he made is what kept Ali motivated that she was not crazy.
I am always fascinated with why people kill and think they will never get caught. More times than not there are detectives like Ali on the cases that never gives up.

You can tell that the author did his research with this story. I loved the extra detail he added and the twist and turns I did not see coming. That is what I loved most about this story. Andrew Hess fed us breadcrumbs the entire story that we had to piece together.

I loved the ending of this story and cannot wait to read more by Andrew Hess.

Ali Ryan is a tough girl detective determined to prove that the murder at her sister’s campus is not a suicide but an actual murder. Ali is aggressive and doesn’t back down from her intuition. I liked being able to see the story from Ali’s perspective; seeing what she does from her view point and what she is feeling at the moment. I could feel the frustrations that Ali goes through when her Lieutenant wouldn’t believe her and kept shutting her down.

As I went through the book I wanted to know who was the killer, who kept murdering people. Once I started reading the book I couldn’t put it down. There are so many twists and turns in the books that just about the time you think you know something then you will be faced with yet another twist.

The author does a great job of getting into the minds of the characters. The author leaves little crumbs throughout the book that you start putting together to try to find out who the killer is. The mystery and suspense in the book is fantastic leaving you want to know more.

The overall story appeared to be well thought out and flowed well from beginning to end. There was extra details and twists that you don’t see coming.

The book is written in true Hess fashion. At the end of the book I wanted to reach through and strangle Andrew for the ending. I never expected the ending however I absolutely LOVED the ending!!! Andrew has been given the name “King of Cliffhangers” for a reason and does not let you down with this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next in the Ali Ryan series.

This book receives a 4 out of 5 on the boredom scale YAY!!!!

I really really enjoyed this book!

This is a story of a man who wants revenge. He has a list and he has a plan. He goes and kills the first girl… (not a bad way to go (no spoilers here) Everyone thinks it was an accident.

The second murder the detective Ali starts noticing things. Things that don’t add up. She starts yelling about MURDER! Her lieutenant thinks shes crazy and tells her to drop it.

She ropes her partner Rodney into believing it is a murder and not suicides. They work on their own time and behind the mans back. They come up with enough to take back to the man and he thinks hmmm it could be murder.

The story goes on and there is four murders planned altogether. He does them all. Through this entire book I kept saying ok he is this man ok no hes doing it because of this. I honestly have to say I could not guess at the ending and I can usually guess pretty quickly.

Why only 4 stars then I HATE CLIFFHANGERS! This book has one. So now I have to twiddle my thumbs and wait till the next book comes out to find out who and why and the where and ewww I hate when authors do this too me.

Mr Hess you did an excellent job!! Thank you for this incredible read!!

An engaging tale of crime with a strong female character

This is the first book I've read by Andrew Hess. I wanted to give the Men Authors some love,this go. I'm not a stranger to books based around crime. As a matter of fact,I love True Crime novels. Yet--I haven't really read anything fictional,until now.
I loved how the book was very descriptive. I don't like giving a short version of the read,as you can find that anywhere. I will say that I really liked the lead female, Detective Ali Ryan,and how she came to be from a male's POV. All the characters are interesting and I appreciated that,as a reader.
There is suspense but nothing gory,though one crime makes you cringe a bit (a good thing for some fans).
There's NO SECRET "who" the "Campus Killer" is...you find out within the first chapter,really. Yet, it is the results and how frustrating it can be to have to find and have proof. That is what leads this tale.
But....not so fast....when you think all has been said and done...something doesn't make sense to you. You,the reader,have followed along and know what Ali knows....including the killer's MO. So, almost near the end--you are wondering WHO ELSE?!!! Is there ANOTHER killer??
Yeah....it is a cliffhanger,indeed....but one that needed to be.
Guess I'm off to try and solve this one,myself.

REVIEW: Campus Killer (bk 1) and Scorned (bk 2) by Andrew Hess

I have been given these ARCs I. Exchange for an honest review.

Andrew Hess has made a convert of me. I haven't ever really been able to immerse myself in a crime thriller before but once I started reading about Detective Ali Ryan and couldn't stop. From the moment you start reading about the serial killer on her little sisters campus you want to know she makes it all ok. As each death passes you can feel her frustration and resentment of the killer. All you want is for her to solve it, when she does will it be a HEA? Can her and her sister ever move on from their ordeal.

****************************************
SPOILER

In Scorned the story continues and believe when I say Hess keeps the punches rolling. Attacking the plot from the survivors perspective you get for the sisters and hope they can find a way through their darkness. The new killer is different from the last and you find yourself empathising with her. To an extent I even wanted her to be free.

****************************************

Hess has a interesting and articulate approach to the stories and fully wraps you into Ali Ryan's life. I look forward to reading many more from Hess and definitely recommend for your TBR.

5 STARS

Campus Killer by Andrew Hess Review

Deaths occur on a college campus. They are almost dismissed as suicides, but for the insistence of one detective that insists there has to be more to it--The matter of how much more is revealed slowly,page after page.
This book was written in the unique perspective of two points of view, showing the talent of the author using both male and female viewpoints of the campus killer and the detective working to solve the cases.
The killer ( Nick/Mark ) is a functioning member in society, albeit an awkward one. A look inside his twisted mind and sense of justice is all the proof needed.
Detective Ali Ryan, is no nonsense, leagues ahead off her peers in crime solving and will not stop until the bad guy is behind bars!

What I most enjoyed about this book was reading both sides of the stories from each of the characters.

What I least enjoyed about this book was getting sidetracked by parallel characters or storylines while trying to stay connected to each chapter and which character it belonged to.

Though I received this book in exchange for a review, the opinions expressed here are mine, and mine alone.

I found the concept of the story riveting, drawing you in and making you wonder what would happen next. There are some inconsistencies in tense usage and incorrect wording throughout the story which caused me to deduct a star, especially the fact that it seems nobody speaks, they all shout. But in general, I really did enjoy the story. The epilogue was fitting as it tied the seeming end of the story to just enough of a scene to whet your appetite for book two. The last chapter and epilogue was also the ultimate in plot twists. Ali seemed realistic as did her sister and her partner. If you enjoy crime novels and suspense, and can read books for their story despite flaws, this is a book for you.

A great crime story! This book kept my attention. The heroic detective, Ali Ryan, was a true, tough person. Her boss should have listened to her. The killer really ticked me off. I wanted to go find him myself. I wanted him caught so bad, but Ali just wasn’t catching a break. All of the characters were portrayed in a way that drew me into their life. When I read this book, there were a lot of errors that took my attention away from the story. From what I understand, there has been some editing since then. This is a cliffhanger! I liked this book so well, I bought the 2nd book to read. I would recommend this book if you like mystery/crime with a great female heroine.

A murder on the loose and a detective on his trail

I never read an mystery book in my time reading, and is not a genre I would re-read on a regular basis, but I'm glad did.

The heroine of this book is detective Ali, A killer is on the loose and no one seems to believe her and they write their heads as suicide, but Ali know is not the Case, following her instincts she decides to do whatever she can, The killer is crafty and you can't wait to have him capture as the story progresses.

The author do a good job on drawing you in into the world he has created, it's a really good book, if you are a fan of this genre is one book I would recommend you to read.

A wonderful, thrilling ride through the pages. Each page keeps you wanting to read more and more. I never wanted to put the book down. I couldn't really. This has now been added to my favorites and to a list that I call 'want to read again'. I enjoyed the mystery of it all.

The book follows Ali Ryan on her journey to follow her dreams of being a detective. She is one strong willed woman that follows her gut instinct on situations.

Awesome crime drama that left be dying to read the next! I absolutely love the main character, Detective Ali Ryan. She is smart, witty, and determined. Her partner Rodney is awesome too. When Ali discovers a set of suicides occurring at her sister's campus are actually murders, she does everything in her power to catch the killer. The killer, well, he is a whole other level of entertainment in this book. The story as a whole is fantastic and I can't wait for Scorned.
