Joy Fielding (née Tepperman; born March 18, 1945) is a Canadian novelist and actress. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, she graduated from the University of Toronto in 1966, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. As Joy Tepperman, she had a brief acting career, appearing in the film Winter Kept Us Warm (1965) and in an episode of Gunsmoke. She later changed her last name to Fielding (after Henry Fielding) and began writing novels. Fielding is also the screenwriter of the television film Golden Will: The Silken Laumann Story.
At the age of 8, Joy Tepperman wrote her first story and sent it into a local magazine, and at age 12 sent in her first TV script, however both were rejected. She had a brief acting career, eventually giving it up to write full-time in 1972. She has published to date 22 novels, two of which were converted into film. Fielding's process of having an idea to the point the novel is finished generally takes a year, the writing itself taking four to eight months. Joy Fielding sets most of her novels in American cities such as Boston and Chicago. She has said that she prefers to set her novels in "big American cities, [as the] landscape seems best for [her] themes of urban alienation and loss of identity. Fielding is a Canadian citizen. Her husband's name is Warren, and they have two daughters, Annie and Shannon. They have property in Toronto, Ontario, as well as Palm Beach, Florida.
Fielding had an interview with the Vancouver Sun in 2007, just after her publication of Heartstopper. She enjoys catching readers off guard with the endings of her stories, but insists that "[it] isn't what her fiction is about", but rather more about the development of her characters. Discussing her novels with the Toronto Star in 2008, she said "I might not write fiction in the literary sense. But I write very well. My characters are good. My dialog is good. And my stories are really involving. I'm writing exactly the kind of books I like to write. And they're the kind of books I like to read. They're popular commercial fiction. That's what they are."
Fielding has been noted as a novelist who is more popular in the United States and foreign countries, rather than in her native Canada. For example, the novel Kiss Mommy Goodbye was more popular in the States, and See Jane Run in Germany. In addition, she had an American agent and publisher, although she has now switched to a Canadian publisher.

Casey is in a coma after being hit by a car. The crazy thing is that she can hear what everyone around her is saying, but she remains unresponsive. I hope I'm never in a coma, but if I am I'd love to be able to hear what people are saying about me. I'm sure it'd be how awesome and delightful I am 🤣
On the whole I wasn't blown away, but I found this to be enjoyable enough. It did feel a bit long and I never thought Casey was going to wake up. Can't say the reason for the accident was super surprising.
Narration notes: I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.
With over twenty books under her belt, Joy Fielding is bound to improve with every novel, yet occasionally produce work that feels like it is a step backward to her faithful readers. Still Life: A Novel, while well-written in spite of a tricky Plot device, still manages to fall short of what Fielding fans have come to expect.
The gimmick of having the books narrator spend the majority of the novel non-communicative yet fully aware of her surroundings in a coma, attempting to solve her attempted murder and prevent a successful second go at it, seems intriguing and inventive at the start. It is.
But the longer you read, the more you begin to realize that you've heard this story before. There isn't much extraordinary material in the book to separate it from other variations on the same theme, including the ever popular "ghost attempting to solve own murder" yarn, no matter how well Fielding handles the self-imposed restrictions of the plot device. Add to that a few instances of non-essential back stories that serve little more purpose than running up the page count, and you can't help shake the feeling that, as competent and well-written Still Life might be, it might have been better served as a short story.
Much like the book's heroine, Still Life manages to exist somewhere between a dead bore and a living, breathing work. You may not hate it, but chances are you won't love it, either. Call it a mystery on life support.

Book 15/100 for the 2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge.
Unnerving novel about a woman in a coma who can hear what everyone around her is saying.
I found this book predictable and filled with WAY too much dialogue. I mean that's understandable considering the MC can only hear but still. And so much unnecessary, over-the-top dialogue. If the antagonist could've had a mustache to twirl, I'm sure he would have..... like just ridiculous.
I empathized with the MC and cannot imagine how frustrating and disheartening her situation was. I loved watching the character progression of her younger sister Drew and her fucking GENIUS ploy at the end with the baking soda.
2.5 stars rounded up. Fast-paced and thrilling, but predictable with too quick of an ending.
Casey Marshall owns her own decorating company and loves her wonderful husband and friends. Then she suffers severe injuries from being hit by a car and is plunged into a coma. Casey gradually becomes aware of what's happening around her. She can hear, at least some of the time, but can't move, see or communicate. What she learns is that the people she loves might not be quite who she thought they were, and the "accident" may have been an attempt on her life.
This is the best suspense novel I've read in the last year, and is one of the best I've ever come across. Every moment is fascinating as Casey attempts to understand her condition, what's happened to her, and the motives of those around her. Her friends and family members are well developed characters, even though we only know them through Casey, who can't even see what they're doing and often has gaps in awareness. Until the very end, I was uncertain how events would play out, and I hung on every word.
For writers, this book should be even more fascinating, if that's possible. Still Life shows a character who couldn't be more physically limited, and who faces mental challenges as well as due to her brain injuries and the drugs she's given. All she can do is lie in bed and, at most, listen. Yet she does everything she can possibly do, uses every possible ounce of her intelligence and creativity. A character who could easily be a victim and who many writers might have made a side character instead is active, engaging, and heroic. That's not easily done.
An exceptional thriller.A woman trapped in her own body, unable to move and to see.She can hear everything that's said around her, however but cannot respond or give a sign. She can hear people scheming and threatening her life.Only now does she realize she's got enemies. The accident that put Casey into a coma was carefully planned by someone she knows very well.As the young woman slowly comes around, the danger that surrounds her gets even greater.Suspenseful, especially towards the end!
First of all, its story about comatose women who can hear what her close ones are talking and she found out secrets they kept hidden from her. It's fast-paced, interesting, dramatic and full of suspense.
This is my first experience with the Canadian author Joy Fielding and I must say I wasn't disappointed with her writing style and the plot twists she puts to her story.
I admit I bought this book on a whim, I was in the bookstore yesterday and saw this cover, all simple and dark, and then decided to read the synopsis since I was in the mood for a mystery/thriller book. I started reading it late last night and finished it a couple of minutes ago. I couldn't put it down, even when I felt my eyes tired and my head on the verge of a headache. The plot is rich and full of character development, even after we learn who's responsible behind Casey's "accident". We follow Casey in her horrifying journey of discovering why she is in this condition, with all her bones shattered and unable to speak, act and, thus, defend herself. We hurt and hope along with Casey and when the beautiful finale comes, we can't help but feel justice hovering around every page of the book. Joy Fielding's writing is simple but effective in capturing whatever she wants to portray and descibe at a particular moment. She "builds" each and every one of her characters without sugarcoating the circumstances and without giving her readers a chance to get bored or, for one moment, completely sure of what it's going to come next. Fielding knows how to keep the readers on the edge and how to make her story mysterious, full of suspence and drama, but also complete, with a satisfying and beautiful ending and rich character development. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the fact that I felt the last 100 pages of the book or so were a bit rushed and not as carefully planned as the rest of the story. It felt like the author was trying to finish it before a deadline or something. Apart from this, though, the book was really, really good and I enjoyed every aspect of it. Casey Marshall is a character that won't be forgotten by me so easily and her story will accompany me whenever I think of mystery/thriller/suspence books. I recommend "Still Life" to people who love reading books which belong to the aforementioned genres and to people who search for a book with a mysterious plot, but also one that has to do less with the exposure of the "murderer" and more with the psychological and emotional journey of its protagonists. "Still Life" may be the first but it certainly won't be the last of Joy Fielding's "children" that I'll choose to make mine.
I don’t read a whole lot of fiction anymore, but my husband recommended this to me just because Middlemarch figures into the plot. The story is about Casey, a woman in a coma after a car crash that police suspect was attempted murder. The first half of the book is a whodunit, but because Casey, against everyone’s expectations, can hear and understand what’s going on around her, she finds out the identity of her would-be murderer midway through. From that point on, the suspense driving the story is whether Casey can will herself out of her semi-vegetative state and get help before the murderer comes back to finish the job. The Middlemarch connection is that one of Casey’s friends is reading the book aloud to her on their visits, and both of them are bored stiff.
The book was a page-turner, but I don’t care what the author thinks of Middlemarch – she’s no George Eliot. The back story expositions that come through dialogue seemed contrived and the jumps between flashback and present weren’t smooth. So a literary masterpiece it’s not, but if you’re in the mood to enter someone else’s fictional drama, this book is engaging and decently character-driven.
A woman is run down by a car and survives. She is seriously injured and is in a coma but she can hear what is going on around her. Eventually she discovers who tried to kill her and why and that the killer won’t stop until she is dead.
The entire book takes place in Casey Marshall’s head through what she hears around her and in flashbacks to her past. As the tension ratchets up you start feeling as trapped as Casey does. This book literally becomes a page turner as you get closer to when the killer prepares their final move.
The characters are all complex and well portrayed, and some are not who they seem to be, in good ways and in bad. My only ding is that one character seems to do an unexpected 180 in personality that isn’t really explained well. Other than that, this is a great read that will keep you on edge until the very end. I have read a few of Joy Fielding’s books and I always forget how good she is at plotting her books until I read them.
Κι ενώ πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο crime story δεν παύει να είναι και ένα βιβλίο (ex)love story. Με την μόνη διαφορά πως παρακολουθείς σελίδα την σελίδα, πως ο έρωτας από φωτεινός και λαμπερός μπορεί να περάσει στην αντίπερα όχθη και να γίνει σκοτεινός και ποταπός. Και σκέφτεσαι μέσα σου... Ρε φίλε... είμαστε τόσο καταστρεμμένο είδος οι άνθρωποι; Έχουμε πέσει τόσο χαμηλά;
Just OK. I probably wouldn't have finished if my book group wasn't reading it. While the plot was interesting, the characters were stock -- the drunken mother, the cynical friend, the good little girl -- the dialogue ordinary and the backstories long and distracting.
My impression: this successful author had a contract for a book of a certain length and padded a shorter story to make up the difference.
I lost count of how many times she thought, "This can't be happening! This can't be happening! This can't be happening! This can't be happening!"
Joy Fielding seems to have watched too many episodes of "House" and "Law & Order." Her novel "Still Life" echoes stories from these too shows that it's almost embarrassing.
The novel tells the story of Casey, a beautiful, successful businesswoman with a happy marriage/home/career/life. Read: something bad's going to happen to her! She is struck by a car so severely that every bone in her body is broken and she suffers from extreme brain trauma. The "hook" is that she is mentally conscious, able to hear and see those around her, but unable to communicate or move. (Look for an episode of "House" about locked-in syndrome.) Predictably, she learns how her family and friends really think about her and is *stunned* to learn a few things.
One of the things she learns is that her accident was no accident. [Insert "Law & Order" dun-dun sound here.:] Her seemingly wonderful husband actually paid someone to kill her. *Gasp!* Learning this, she must then figure out how to communicate her fear to others without tipping off the husband that she knows he's a sociopath. Ultimately, she is able to communicate with her sister that the husband is bad news. Casey regains her strength in just the nick of time to save herself, her family and bring her husband to justice.
The most significant problem with the novel is its predictability, mainly because the storylines were heavily borrowed from other sources. Calling this a "novel of suspense" was also a misnomer, primarily because the author reveals who the bad guy is way too early, thus removing the element of suspense. Finally, I'm annoyed that the perfect main character got back her perfect life in the end. Even "Law & Order" lets some of the good guys lose now and then.

Someone recommended this to me, I have no clue why. The premise could have been interesting: after being hit by a car, a woman awakens in the hospital, but can't see, can't move, in a coma by all appearances. Then (insert sinister music) it seems the accident is no "accident." The cast of suspects take turns going into her room and yakking it up about whatever happens to be passing through their shallow minds. The characters aren't characters, they are caricatures. The rich "ladies who lunch," the jealous friend, the screw-up sister, and the constant flash-backs to her poor-little-rich-girl upbringing all made for a big snooze fest. I would recommend this book for those who like repetition and have no interest in anything immaginative. For anyone who is going to recommend something to me, try to stick with my 3-S policy (swords, sorcery, sex).
Bah. Still Life came across to me as rather contrived. One of those, "Hell, I could write better than this" kind of books. Typical perfect character with the single flaw - a daddy and mommy that apparently put Joan Crawford in the running for Parent of the Year. Oh - and more money than God, so of course she attracts a few ne'er-do-wells into her life. But you know, she's just so darn perfect, you can't help but over her. Well, someone didn't, and it's pretty obvious who, and the book just got more and more unrealistic with the turn of the page. Seriously? The junkie sister-slash-single mother ends up being the one who can magically pick up on Casey's attempts to communicate? Puh-leeze. Still, if you're looking for an easy beach read, this is definitely a time killer. Just don't expect too much from the story. Thought-provoking, this is not.
Casey is beautiful, rich, happily married and the victim of a "hit and run" which broke almost every bone in her body and left her in a coma. People in comas can hear - and that's what has Casey so anxious and confused. People are not necessarily the people she thought them to be and there was nothing she could do about it. Nicely done even tho I knew who was responsible early on.
If you're looking for a suspense novel, look elsewhere. By page 15 the whole story became clear to me, due to too many hints in the opening chapters. Young wealthy woman, hit by a car, in a deep coma...but can everything the doctors, friends, sister and husband say in her hospital room. Obviously the accident was no accident and yadayada....
I wish the ending wasn't so rushed and I wished some more explanation but all in all - very enjoyable read :D I think Joy Fielding is becoming one of my beloved authors.
It could've been better. The villain's motive was weak so that took away some of my enjoyment. But overall it was a pretty good psychological thriller.
