He’s the fire I was never meant to touch. I’m the ice prince who can’t seem to stay frozen.
Graduate. Dominate. No distractions—especially cocky sophomores like Xavier Martinez. Every stolen kiss in the shadows, every brush of his hand, sends cracks splintering through the walls I swore would never break.
He sees the mess underneath the ice prince. And now the sight of him across the rink feels less like rivalry and more like self-destructive obsession.
He’s bad decisions in gray sweatpants, sin-slick confidence, the rival team’s golden boy.
My antithesis. My counterpoint. My favorite chaos gremlin.
One slip, and I hand my father the proof he's always wanted—that I was never enough to bear the de la Peña name. I can’t afford to want him, but he’s determined to prove that imperfection tastes better than any win.
I’ve spent my life chasing light—now I’m falling for the man who makes the dark feel like home. Artemis makes me feel chosen, but at the rink, I'm still just the enemy.
When it all comes crashing down, I won’t walk away. I’ll stand there, bare and unguarded, and dare him to love me anyway. Artemis has to choose—between his fear of failure and the reckless, messy love that might finally set us both free.
You can’t be the ice prince when your lover is the fire.
Lasairiona McMaster writes sassy, classy and badassy women and strong, yet vulnerable men.
She challenges reader’s expectations by openly dealing with mental health issues, often exploring tough-to-handle topics and ‘taboos’ and books with a whole lotta heart.
She can either be found enjoying a gin and lemonade by the Irish sea, or baking sweet treats in her kitchen while singing at the top of her lungs.
When she’s ‘home’ in Texas, and isn’t eating fresh-popped popcorn while buying things she has absolutely no need for in Target, she can be found at Chuys eating her body weight in chips and queso and washing it down with a margarita swirl.
This is the 7th book in the Caesar Rapids Raccoons series however this is the second one I’ve read in the series. This was one of those hockey romances that slowly pulls you in with the tension and then suddenly you’re fully invested in these characters
Artemis and Xavier have that perfect push-and-pull dynamic where they’re constantly getting under each other’s skin, but underneath all the tension there’s so much vulnerability building. Artemis especially was such an interesting character because he keeps everything locked down so tightly and watching Xavier slowly break through those walls felt really natural instead of rushed.
I also really liked the author’s writing style here. It was easy to fall into and kept the story moving without feeling overly heavy, but it still gave the emotional moments room to land. The banter felt natural, the chemistry was strong and the quieter scenes stood out just as much as the spicy ones for me.
There’s rivalry, grumpy/sunshine energy, secret relationship vibes, found family moments with the team and a really solid emotional core running through the whole story.
Definitely a good pick if you like character-driven MM hockey romances where the tension and emotional connection carry just as much weight as the romance itself.
Yup, Arte and Xavier just might be my favorite of all of Lasairiona's couples, and that's saying a lot because I've stayed true to my favorite couple for a very long time. I have been waiting for Artemis's story for a while, and as a fan of Lasairiona's, I knew that he wasn't giving her his story. Well let me tell you, I'm SO GLAD he waiting and she didn't rush him, because hot damn, his story was so much more then I was hoping for! It was worth the wait!!!
Arte and Xavier had chemistry from the start and it just kept getting hotter as the book went along. (And just saying, it could have kept going for another few chapters I was loving them so much.) The way Xavier went after who he wanted full steam ahead, it was sexy as hell. And all the witty banter, and nicknames? Come on!!! He stole my heart right away. And then there's Arte, the fixer of all who relies on no one, who has heart of gold who doesn't seem to believe he should be loved. I just wanted to crawl into this book, grab him, hug him tight and tell him he was worthy of love. My heart broke for this man, but as always, Lasairiona made sure to mend it by the end.
This book made me laugh and cry and swoon so damn hard. These boys captured my heart from the very start and didn't let go. Their constant back and forth was so fun. I loved seeing the whole family come back in this last book of the series too. These characters are something else.
Following Artemis and Xavier through their story was so much more than a love story. That's one of the reasons Lasairiona is one of my favorite authors. Not only was this a love stroy, it was a story of personal growth, of family, of making decisions that are best for you, not what others think is best. Lasairiona always adds such relevant life events in all of her books that we can all relate to. It makes them so much more enjoyable to read.
Lasairiona, I know this was your first MM book, and it better not be your last! You did an absolutely phenomenal job with Artemis and Xavier's story. You know you do this magic with your words that makes us fall for you characters, making us want more and more, and then we have no choice but to never leave your side. Your talent knows no bounds.
Splitting the D is a 5 ⭐️ for sure. An absolute perfect way to end this series. A must read for sure.
OMG!! Splitting the D is an enemies to lovers hockey romance with tension and spice. This is Artemis and Xavier’s story filled with grumpy/sunshine and unexpected surprises. Artemis is a little close off hockey player with a lot on his plate. While Xavier is more an outgoing hockey player from a rival team, who brings out the best in Artemis. I love their push and pull relationship, it really brings out more of their softer side and how they truly care about each other. I also love how they are protective of each other and would do anything for each other. Their relationship really is unique and I love the friendship and family support that they have. Their story had me swooning and giggling. I really enjoyed their story and can’t wait to read more!
I voluntarily leave my honest thoughts of this gifted advance reader copy.
OMG I have been so excited for Artemis’s story. This story was amazing. Artemis is trying to get revenge on his father; he has no time for a relationship. Xavier has other plans. The banter is off the charts. Did want to hit Artemis up side the head a few times ohhhh yes. But all in all this book was one I could not put down.
Trigger Warnings include: on page mention of SA/Rape in passing (happens in a previous book), narcissistic father, neglectful parent figure, emotionally abusive parent figure, on page injury to a main character
I knew going into this book that Artemis would be the sibling to break me. And within the first chapter, I knew I was right! This poor man is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Protecting his siblings, rebuilding a legacy they deserve, being a beast on the ice -and all while surviving college. Everything is held close to the chest, everything is dealt with alone. Artemis would rather perish than worry his loved ones. But when he starts exchanging barbs with a player from a rival team, life starts unraveling in a whole new way. Xavier is the breath of fresh air his sanity needs. The push and pull. Banter that was truly flirting. Support, respect, understanding, and pure love. Xavier brings out the soft bear side of Artemis. I loved every version of him. But when he starts to truly open up, and lets someone in, it was so special. I love this family, this beautiful bond that has been built. The family the de la Peña deserve. Xavier (and his own family) is the perfect fit. He’s everything I could have hoped for for Artemis. There’s little nuggets of connections to Lasairiona’s other books and it made me giddy every time! Also, in case you needed more of a nudge: there’s caretaking, slutty glasses, and piercings as well.
My Favorite Quotes: • “It’s enough, because you’re enough.” • “I like how my name sounds like a prayer on your lips.” • “I want to see what happens when you melt. Maybe clean up the puddle with my tongue.” • “You don’t need to hide from me. But if you need to hide from the world, maybe I can sit with you while you do?” • “This belongs to me now. You don’t get to get off without my say so.” • “Thanks for letting me stay.” • “Don’t try to fix this for me. Just… stay. Even if I’m a mess.” • “Let me worship you.” • “You’re the only storm I’ll ever run toward.” • “Let me watch you break for me.”
7/10 Dirty Birdy 2/10 Enemies to Lovers 6/10 Second Chance 6/10 Slow Burn 7/10 Sports Romance 9/10 Series
This book is for anyone who loves a tense, fiery MM rivals to lovers hockey romance.
Artemis de la Peña is the textbook ice prince, controlled, perfectionistic, and carrying the crushing weight of his family name on his shoulders.
Xavier Martinez is the chaotic golden boy from the rival team who keeps sliding past every one of Artemis’s carefully built defenses with cocky smiles, stolen kisses, and way too much confidence in gray sweatpants. 😜
I loved how the fire and ice dynamic wasn’t just surface level. Their attraction feels genuinely dangerous for Artemis, who knows one slip could give his father exactly the ammunition he’s always looked for to prove his son isn’t good enough. That internal battle between wanting Xavier and fearing what it could cost him is written so raw and believable that it hurts in the best way. Xavier, on the other hand, brings this beautiful mix of playful persistence and deep longing, he just wants to be chosen by the one person who makes him feel seen.
The hockey rivalry adds tension. Every time they face off on the ice, the chemistry crackles even harder because they’re supposed to be enemies. The scenes are well written and immersive without getting overly technical. (I could almost see the game being played on the ice.)
The steam is there (and it’s delicious), but the tender, quiet moments where the walls come down are what make this couple stick with you.
I liked that Artemis has to confront his obsession with perfection and his terror of failure, while Xavier shows real strength in standing steady when things get messy.
If I had any small criticism, it’s that the push/pull angst drags just a touch in the middle, but it’s the kind of delicious agony that makes the payoff feel earned. By the end I was fully invested in their happy ending.
Splitting the D is spicy, heartfelt, and emotionally satisfying.
If you enjoy grumpy/sunshine with teeth, forbidden rival vibes, and characters who have to fight their own heads as hard as they fight on the ice, this one delivers.
Lasairiona very quickly became an auto read author for me and this is another book that just knocks it out of the park.
We've made it to the last remaining De La Pèna sibling - Artemis. We find him in a tough spot mentally, emotionally at the start of this book and he has the weight of the world on his shoulders with no understanding of how to get himself out of the hole he's in.
In comes smart mouth, bratty Xavier, his opponent on the ice and whose chemistry with him off the ice is enough to melt a glacier and sends his world into a tailspin.
This is Las's first MM romance and I can only hope that she writes more of these. The MMCs have this delicious push and pull between them as they battle to make their relationship work in the face of the obstacles they face.
There is no 3rd act breakup - though not for the lack of trying - and I think it's the perfect way for these two to make it to their HEA.
The struggles and yearning from both our guys really got me, I giggled, kicked my feet at points as well as crying at others(and even threatened bodily harm to my previous fave Scottie at one point)
Crowded family scenes had me feeling like I was in the room with them all, watching from the corner (only slightly creepy, promise) and even in the quieter moments I felt the weight of what was passing between these characters like I was intruding.
All in all, it feels like a perfect ending to a series I already know I'll revisit from time to time.
Regardless of whether you've already read the rest of the series or if you've got them all ahead of you (kind of jealous if you do) this book wont disappoint at all.
Oh, and be sure to subscribe to Lasairiona's newsletter to pick up a yummy little primal bonus scene once youre done......
On the ice fierce rivals . Off the ice fiercely fought in combat of another sort. The two are messaging right left and centre . For the first time ever somebody sees through to him ,not the hockey hero expectations but each exchange is an eye opener in many ways and not in hockey situations. These two are tight and Xavier Martinez makes Artemis de La Pena feel seen and worth more .
Dragged into their story that’s heavenly penned by Lasairiona E. McMaster . Bravo my friend. We have daddy issues and that’s an understatement! Revenge on his cad of a dad who wants his pound of flesh, is priority and though he has seniority ,he will not have the upper hand. Arte has lived and breathed or should that be suffocated under the shadow of his brother who was a star on ice so this has been expected that he follow the same path a resurrected continuance of the family line of greats and this grates the one who salivates at his touch and says as much.
Tension to the structuring heat is part of it but this book is exquisite. Plus a little sweet I feel cos this story of theirs is real feel. Hockey as well as nooky count me in the bin of sin and biting the biscuit because this guy is gonna risk it ,you can feel it arc off the page.
But seriously the way these two have chemistry that’s boundless and Xavier makes Artemis/Arte see that he must live for himself and not his kin who hit the top shelf. The back and forth and the scenes of splendour grew as well as the characters,on a bender and no mistake this book melts your heart and your tummy ache from the tension and banter between them. A bit of an hiccup but right back on track and got each other’s backs ,which is rather n-ice...
Splitting the D exceeded my expectations and beyond. I honestly didn’t know how I was going to feel with this pairing. But Artemis and Xavier story was absolutely brilliant.
Artemis literally has the world on his shoulders, he has one goal in mind. Even if it means working himself to death. Which means no distractions and focus on three things, school, hockey and work.
Xavier he is a welcome suspire. He’s working on his degree. All while working his butt off to being a great hockey player. He doesn’t want to be known as Roman Martinez brother. He want to be known for his own skills on the ice.
When Xavier goes after his rival Artemis you’ll see all the struggles they go through. Mainly because of Artemis he wants to remain focus and no distractions. But the pull is strong enough to let his guard down. The way these two are with each other is so freaking adorable. I just couldn’t stop smiling. The banter, the laughter, the pet names and beyond. All the help they get from his meddling siblings is absolutely worth it. It’s never a dull moment when the De la Peña are involved. I truly enjoyed every minute of this incredible story. I’m sad to see this series ending. But this is one of the best series and characters I’ve enjoyed from the beginning.
Though to be honest it's a 10 out of 10 for me. Now this is a stand alone but if you have been here for a while you know I'm obsessed with this series so I do recommend reading the others just because you truly get to know these friends and family and their dynamics together. I know lasariona nearly didn't write Artemis and I'm so glad she did because my god these two were made for each other.Xavier Martinez is the complete opposite to Artemis he's bold, mischievous and determined to get his man and our man Artemis is a workaholic with something to prove against his dad who is a horrible man. He is also determined to do everything on his own. They both play for rival teams they are long distance and yet you don't even notice this. When they are building the connection, The way they connect together has its ups and downs but that is because Artemis has walls super built up. But Xavier just keeps showing up and being there for him. God I didn't put this down. Also the happy dance when I connected the dots that Xavier is related to Roman from my brother's teammates ( a book co written by lasariona and Melissa ivers)
If you love care packages, praise, piercing in a special place and hand necklaces. Then this book is for you to run don't walk and go get this now.
Splitting the D by absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible. Artemis and Xavier had explosive chemistry from the very first interaction, but what made this story unforgettable was the emotional depth behind all the banter, rivalry, and stolen kisses. Artemis carrying the weight of his family while refusing to let anyone help him broke my heart, and Xavier was the perfect balance of chaos, warmth, and unwavering support. Their relationship felt raw, genuine, and incredibly swoony. Lasairiona’s writing shines with sharp humor, emotional vulnerability, and a found-family dynamic that made this series so special from the start. The flirting? Elite. The tension? Off the charts. The caretaking, piercings, and “slutty glasses”? Bless this book honestly. Beyond the romance, the story beautifully explores identity, pressure, personal growth, and learning you deserve love exactly as you are. An absolutely perfect ending to the era. I laughed, cried, swooned, and immediately wanted to reread it. A must-read MM hockey romance.
Splitting the D (Cedar Rapids Raccoons Book 7)- Lasairiona McMaster ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 5 Stars 🌶🌶🌶 - Spice Level
Artemis the grump and Xavier the fun sunshine start off kind of rocky. Xavier knows the grumpy Artemis is down with him, but Artemis keeps pushing him away to protect him and to concentrate on his revenge against his father. All this is happening in secret whether it's secret trysts or quiet merger decisions.
I absolutely adored Xavi's cockiness towards Arte. He was going to get his man. The scene in the back of the suv was so full or raw passion and tension before a meddling brother hops is was hit and then I was laughing my a$$ off. I loved how Artemis's family kept trying to help and give these two a little push. The De La Pena's were a tight knit group that was seen throughout this series and I just loved them more and more. Shame they had a 🍆 for a father, but despite this all the children would blossom one at a time as they found love and family.
I absolutely loved this book! I've been waiting for Artemis and Xavier's story, and I can confidently say it did not disappoint. This book had it all:
- Rivals-to-lovers tension - Long-distance romance with all the yearning you could imagine - Care packages - Emotional turmoil and the push-and-pull of wanting and not being sure you're deserving of everything life has to offer - Oh so much spice!
Artemis and Xavier are perfectly imperfect for each other. Xavier is sunshine, sweetness, playfulness, and absolute chaos. Artemis is the ultimate ice prince: quiet, controlled, and absolutely overwhelmed. I loved seeing them fight for each other and watching their relationship evolve. I can't recommend this book enough!
Loved the banter and the cuteness of this book. As usual, with Las’s books, I could not put it down. This series is to good and easy to read and fall in love with.
In this book Artemis is living his life, plotting against his dad and doing lots of thinking about his life. Xavier is the happy guys, laughing and enjoying life.
The energy and chemistry between them is high and the spice too.
I’ve said it before, as a psychologist, I love that Las always have some point to discuss and address. When we are not good about ourselves we cannot be good about others. Facts!!!
We have some interesting discoveries in this book, like who is behind Tabitha’s stories. 😵💫 And how families can get together and rally for each other!!!
I loved reading this!!! Thank you Las for the arc. 🥰
Oh, Artemis you were a long time coming, but you were so worth the wait!
This is the final book in the riveting Cedar Rapid Raccoons series, and it's been such a wild ride with these De La Peña's.
Artemis is so focused on getting revenge on his father that he has no time for anything else, especially relationships.
Enter Xavier, who turns his life upside down and shows up to prove that Arte deserves to be loved and not overlooked.
I loved the rivals to lovers, opposite side of the tracks, the banter, the hockey, and not to omit the chemistry between these two, which let me tell you was HAF!
This was a perfect 5🌟conclusion and I'm so happy to have been on this journey with Lasairiona.
I stayed up way too late 3 nights in a row, because I simply did NOT want to put down my copy of Splitting the D. This one was a great finale to Lasairiona's Cedar Rapids U hockey series.
I love the De La Pena siblings. I fell for Xavier as well!
Artemis is drowning, between work, school and his hockey schedule, he doesn't have time to date anyone. He doesn't even want the distraction.
From the moment Xavier locks eyes with Arte on the ice, he's smitten and interested. After speaking to Ares, Artemis younger brother, and getting his information, he begins chasing the other man, texting him and sending him gifts.
I absolutely loved this novel by Lasairiona. A great MM Romance!!
This was an interesting read. So many characters, some of whom I've met in previous books and some I don't think I have (must have missed some!) all coming together. It felt longer than it needed to be, but I was enjoying it so not a huge issue, just took longer than expected to finish. I liked the evolution of the relationship between Artemis and Xavier. The rivals to lovers push and pull was fun to watch unfold. I really enjoyed the different family dynamics at play and how it shaped who each of the guys was. If you enjoy sports romance, rivals to lovers, interfering family (in a good way) and stories about finding who you are under everything, this is a good choice.
Gah my review didn't save! Anyway, Arte and Xavier finally shared their story and I was here for it... It's a slow build and I honestly don't know how Xavier held his nerve. Arte was infuriating and took his damn time! But once he fell, boy was it worth it.
As ever the De La Peña's were so extra, full of spice but totally there for their super serious bro. This was a satisfying end to the series and I'm so glad we finally got Artemis' story. It's not quite my favourite as Athena is far too strong and sassy to allow that, but he put up a good fight. I'm going to miss the Raccoons... But there's always the option of a re-read!
I love being one of Lasairiona's ARC/ALPHA readers because she always hits me deep in my feelings. I feel like this story was a long time coming. I liked Artemis and Xavier so much. Their banter was lovely, and the shenanigans they got up to were quite fun. I think Artemis felt like he had a lot to prove, and that poor boy had sooo much pressure weighing him down. I'm so glad Xavier helped ground him and care for him in the way that he didn't know he needed. I can't believe this series is over for now, and I'm definitely going to miss this family and this team. It was great seeing the other De La Pena siblings, and I'm always excited to see what's next.
Arte and Xavier’s chemistry was electric from the very start, growing hotter with every chapter. Xavier’s fearless pursuit of what he wanted, paired with his witty banter and nicknames, made him impossible not to love, while Arte’s guarded heart and quiet selflessness completely shattered me. Their story delivered so much more than romance. it was about growth, family, and learning to choose yourself despite what others expect. Lasairiona balanced heartbreak, humor, and swoon-worthy moments perfectly, making me laugh, cry, and fall completely in love with these characters. For a first MM romance, this was phenomenal, and I already know these boys will stay with me for a long time.
Oh my gosh. This book was everything I needed it to be and more. I’ve been struggling to make it through books lately and this just sucked me in.
It gave me all the feels. Giggling, sighing, wishing, wanting. I was ready for fight for Artemis and Xavier. And I’m so glad they both have strong families who did just that.
They were what each other never knew they needed. It was sweet and wholesome and loving. So much truth and rawness. Laying out all the feelings. Perfect all the way around.
I received this as an ARC for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review.
Artemis and Xavier! I'm so happy that they decided to tell their story to Lasairiona McMaster! And what a story it is! This one is really emotional, all of the feels! I definitely yelled at Artemis multiple times. Xavier is so perfect for him. And the way the whole story wraps up the series is amazing.
I highlighted so many wonderful quotes. This was an ARC. Sometimes I have to break the rules to put my favorite highlight into a review. “From now on? If you’re going to run anywhere, you run to me.”
I received an advance review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Loved this series, and boy was it worth the wait to see Artemis happy, in the end. Complex, interesting characters, family, both found and blood.I love the Community this author créâtes, and every series, every genre she writes, is real, and heart a he, adversity, joy and true love, all at once. Read this book. You will be glad you did. Then go read everything she writes because it is all phénoménal. She also writes as Lasairiona Lewis, Read all those books, too.
I knew this book was going to be worth the wait, but had no idea just how much it would consume me. Artemis and Xavier story was a slow progression, full of emotion, angst and LOTS of tension. As a lifelong hockey fan I have always appreciated this authors attention to detail and knowledge about the sport. The characters in this series were all wonderful and sprinkled throughout each others books. I am sad to see this series end but know whatever is next from this author will be worth reading. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book for my honest opinion.
Splitting the D is a beautifully written MM hockey romance that digs deep into our hearts about what it means to surrender to love. This is NOT a coming out book. It’s a discovering more of who you are in the light of love book. It’s deep, emotional, charged with the fun tension as well as the not so fun. I enjoyed reading it so much more than I expected and can’t wait to tell others to read it.
I really loved that we got this book after reading all the others in this series of standalone books.
This is so much more than a rival hockey romance. The weight of the world on Artemis shoulders and his light energetic Xavier are the perfect match to compliment each other. Both with the connection of never truly being individual and seen in the shadows of their family.
Ice price and the fiery rival Normally, MM romance is not my thing, but I’ve read the previous books in the Cedar Rapids series and have grown to love the De La Peña family and really wanted to see Artemis find love and to read the final story. I have to say that Xavier is exactly what Artemis needed. He showed up, stayed and was the steady support exactly when it counted. This has tension, angst, family dynamics, friendships, emotion, humour, flirting, steam and hockey action.
OMG..... what an absolutely superb end to the Cedar Rapids Raccoons series. I loved, loved, loved Artemis and Xavier's heartbreaking story. I was in tears by chapter 47!! No spoilers, you need to read it for yourself. It's been well worth the wait! Thank you for letting me review this book. It has to be up there as one of my favourites that you have written!
The De La Peña saga continues. Following this family’s lows and highs has been extremely gratifying. Artemis and Xavier are such a cute couple. Artemis does have quite the weight on his shoulder. This makes him almost screw up this beautiful love story. I have absolutely loved reading this series so much.
I have long awaited to finally get our broody boy Artemis’s story and it did not disappoint. I love Xavier for him with his silly side that also gives him everything he needs. They are truly so great together and although their journey wasn’t easy, I loved watching Artemis finally relent and realize this was the best thing for them!
