He lives by a set of rules. She might be his one exception.
I just wanted a distraction, something to take the edge off before facing a wedding I was dreading. So on the flight back to New York, I signed up for a dating app. Harmless enough, right?
Wrong.
Turns out, it wasn’t just any app—it catered to people with very specific tastes. By the time I realized it, I was already on my date.
Tall, confident, and sinfully handsome, Jagger Langston seemed like the full package. The chemistry between us was instant—electric enough to burn the whole city down. Though things took a turn when we figured out I’d misunderstood who should join the app. We laughed it off, said goodbye, and went our separate ways.
Or so I thought.
Until I walked into my new internship Monday morning, ready to put the weekend behind me, and there he was—my boss.
Now I’m caught between the rules he lives by—and the temptation to make him break every single one of them.

She resides in New York with her husband and their three children where she is living out her own happily ever after with the boy she met at age six.
This romance novel definitely lived up to its expectations! I have read several books written by this author and I’ve loved every single one of them! This is a workplace romance that has spice in it. This book had me hooked right from the beginning and I was fully immersed while reading it from start to finish. I really loved the female character in this one. She is strong, smart and sassy! The male main character is extremely confident, great looking and likes to play by the rules. After meeting on an app, they go on one date. After the one date, they play it off and go there separately ways. Not long after that, she walks into her internship office and there he is.
He is her new boss and she had no idea! I had such a fun time reading this one! I really felt the tension and the chemistry between these two characters! The witty banter between them was funny! If you enjoy reading romance in the workplace standalone books, I am sure you would love reading this one! Thank you to the author Vi Keeland for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Overall, I give this a 5 out of 5 stars rating! The author did an amazing job writing this one!
This book is expected to be published on 1/11/2026!
The Exception by Vi Keeland was truly exceptional — a little kink, a lot of laughs, plenty of tension, and just the right amount of the feels to make you forget the world for a while. This workplace, opposites-attract romance is everything.
Sutton is a smart and sassy algorithm expert who meets Jagger on a dating app called DARE. They figure out pretty quickly that Sutton isn’t into Jagger’s brand of fun. They part ways until her internship begins. Enter Jagger: Sutton’s spicy, demanding new boss who will have you swooning from page one.
I also adored Sutton’s best friend, Miles. Everyone needs a Miles in their life. His banter with Sutton about Jagger is hysterical. He’s the ultimate best friend: loyal, chaotic in the best possible way, and the comedic relief we all need. I would share my favorite quotes, but I don’t want to spoil the fun for you.
The Exception, releasing January 11, 2026, is another unputdownable and addictive romance from Vi. It has officially earned a spot on my Best of 2025/26 list.
When Sutton Holland joins a dating app to take her mind off the upcoming event she must attend, she didn’t realize what kind it was until her first “date”. That didn’t really go as planned though the man, Jagger Langston, was nice to look at for a second at least. She never thought after their awkward encounter she would see him again. However, finding out he is now your summer intern boss kind of changes that plan! Can she keep his secret and stay professional or will Jagger want to test those boundaries? Omg, from the very first chapter you know this one is going to be good! The funny moments, the awkward ones and the heat between them is all so perfect. I loved Sutton’s best friend Miles also. He is a hoot! A perfect slow burn romance that keeps you smirking all the way through. A total emotional swoonfest! Are you ready to make an exception…for the right one? Told in first person and mainly in Sutton’s POV with a few chapters in Jagger’s too showing you why he is the way that he is. A definite Top Read! 📸 Teaser Collage by Miss Petite Brunette Book Blog
I loved everything about this book! I was intrigued by the title and blurb and obviously the cover. The spice? Let me tell you…. It was spicyyyy and the yearning broody billionaire??? Enough said? But I really liked the FMC and how she was so smart in her own right. I received an EARC from the author and these are my honest thoughts.
"Some storms are meant to be danced in, not dodged."
Whoa, I just wrapped up my bookish 2025 with a bang all thanks to this one!!! Vi Keeland has become one of my auto-buy authors after I discovered her earlier this year with Something Borrowed, Something You, which ends up being one of the best books I've ever read in my entire life. No kidding. In fact, I don't think there's a book written by her that I do not love and The Exception is NO exception to me. *no pun intended*
Honestly, I've never been a fan of billionaire or office romance (CEO/intern) but somehow, Vi completely transforms me and now I can't get over how brilliant the love story between our beloved main characters, Jagger and Sutton, is! Despite the fact that Jagger keeps saying and thinking he isn't capable of loving another person and how he's the perpetual no-strings-attached type, he always goes above and beyond just to take care of Sutton, the intern whom he can't seem to stop thinking about (or secretly stalking from the little globe camera in the office). Although his overprotectiveness and possessiveness should have been red flags in reality, I kinda lowkey find those personal traits of his super hot, particularly when I find out how special Sutton is to him.
In short, The Exception is a MUST-READ and I seriously cannot recommend it enough! Vi's writing is always so addictive that at this point, I won't mind devouring anything she comes up with, like literally. Therefore, please do yourself a favor and go preorder this book!! It'll make your 2026 all the more colorful (cue ChasingColors, #iykyk) and spectacular, trust me!
***Massive thanks to Give Me Books PR and the author for generously providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
If Vi Keeland writes it, I will read it! Her books pull me in from the start and I get engrossed in her words. The Exception was no exception! I just loved everything about this story. While the characters had their flaws and struggles, their connection was apparent from their first meeting. A dating app for the kinky was their meet cute first encounter. Sutton was inexperienced, coming to NYC for an internship for this summer. Jagger happened to be the exact opposite and the head of the company. Their magnetic pull, their caring ways, their ability to see beyond the walls and change the other for the better made this a book I couldn’t put down. I listened to the audio and Sebastian York and Andi Arndt were fabulous bringing these characters and story to life. Sutton and Jagger couldn’t be more opposite. He was controlling and always wanted to be in charge. She is smart, beautiful and just the distraction he needs. Can these two opposites break the rules and find their happily ever after? This is a workplace romance with a hot billionaire, spice and angst. Another winner from Vi Keeland!
From beginning to end, I was hooked. A CEO/intern spicy story, but with deep emotions and trauma, a little mystery, and an overall amazing story!
I loved our FMC Sutton, and her determination to take care of herself and be independent.. but I also loved our MMC Jagger, and his determination to make Sutton obey 🤭😮💨
I can’t recommend it enough for any spicy, romance lovers!
Holy mother of pearl was this fucking good!😮💨🔥 • • Full review to come
@vi_keeland was one of the new to me authors I discovered in 2025. I have binged several of her books now, and I’m completely hooked!
THE EXCEPTION was no different. I DEVOURED this book. It’s addictive, and truly unputdownable. The banter throughout the book was top tier and Sutton’s best friend Miles was hilarious (he definitely stole the show at times)! I definitely shed a few tears, because the emotional storylines hit hard and made Jagger and Sutton’s road to their HEA anything but easy.
Make sure you go read this book when it releases on January 11th! The audiobook was also amazing! Sebastian York & Andi Arndt brought this story to life beautifully. Highly recommend!!
Thanks to Vi & her team for this arc in exchange for my honest review.🫶🏻
Thanks to Vi Keeland and Give Me Books for my copy of the ALC. This is my honest review of the ALC.
Jagger and Sutton are two very different people and have a little bit of age difference between them.
Vi Keeland always hands us a book that will hook us from the very beginning and The Exception is no different. She is one of my auto buy authors!
Jagger and Sutton deliver us an opposites attract romance, work place romance. They bring us laughter, tension, a some of Jagger’s kinky moments, and lots of feelings that developed.
We meet Sutton who is returning home to New York to attend her stepsister and ex-boyfriend’s wedding. Yes, you read that correctly, ex-boyfriend. Sutton decides that she’s going to try to lose her v-card while in New York for the wedding. That’s how she meets Jagger, but the DARE App turns out to be more than a regular dating App and Jagger turns out to be her stepfathers boss :-)
I loved Jagger and Sutton together!! He was so protective over her after he found out what happened and she was always looking out for him because he worked so many hours.
The audiobook was narrated by Sebastian York and Andi Arndt in duet narration. If you have ever listened to these two narrate anything you know they do great work. This audiobook was no different. It was awesome! Most defiinitely worth a credit if you have to use one.
This is a must read from Vi Keeland, so make sure to grab it when it releases on January 11, 2026.
Vi girl… you did it again. I love all of her books, and being part of this ARC team made this one even more special for me. From the very first page, this story pulled me in and never let go. The Exception was such a fun, addictive read—but don’t be fooled, it also goes deeper than expected. I absolutely loved seeing Vi explore heavier themes. Mental health and PTSD are woven so realistically into Sutton and Jagger’s lives, shaping who they are and how they love. It added so much depth and emotion to their story. And let’s talk about the spice 🌶️🔥 This book definitely brought it to another level—and Jagger? Oh my… Jagger 🥵 Enough said. I loved everything about these two: their connection, their growth, their banter, and the way their story unfolded so naturally. The pacing was perfect, the emotions hit just right, and I was fully invested from start to finish. An easy 5-star read for me. Highly recommend !
This was a fun, quick read very reminiscent to 50 shades of grey. The banter was quick and exciting, the spice was fun, and we get a HEA at the end. What more could you want from a billionaire romance? I recommend this if you’re in between series or just looking for your next binge-able contemporary romance!
The Exception delivers a compelling blend of billionaire romance, emotional healing, and unexpected vulnerability. Vi Keeland pairs two deeply scarred characters—Sutton and Jagger—whose connection challenges their need for control and forces them to confront long-buried pain.
Sutton, a 24-year-old recent MBA graduate, is intelligent, resilient, and quietly haunted by trauma. Jagger, a 32-year-old billionaire CEO and former Marine, carries his own demons—from both childhood and combat. Both characters are guarded, not out of emotional distance, but because survival taught them to protect what’s vulnerable.
The story opens with Sutton flying home for her stepsister’s wedding—to the man Sutton dated for three years. In a moment of emotional recklessness, she signs up for a dating app mid-flight, unaware it caters to very specific sexual interests. Her match is Jagger, who handles the misunderstanding with surprising grace, allowing her to walk away without judgment. Fate, however, has other plans. When Sutton arrives at the rehearsal dinner, she’s stunned to discover that Jagger is not only her stepfather’s boss, but also the billionaire executive at the top of the company where she’s about to start her summer internship.
Keeland expertly leans into the billionaire/boss-employee trope while subverting its expectations. This is not a story about being “fixed” or rescued. Instead, The Exception explores trust, autonomy, and the courage it takes to be fully seen. Emotional, sexy, and surprisingly tender, The Exception is a romance that proves sometimes the greatest risk is learning to relinquish control—not to change each other, but to accept love without conditions.
I've already read a few of Vi's books, not all, but someday hopefully 😁 But this one is my first ARC reading for her. I'm still flabbergasted I got the opportunity 🤩 I was so excited, and Vi didn't disappoint.
Jagger is so cute. Yeah, yeah, don't tell him, he would never agree with that, and as a "soft" dom, I'm not sure what punishment I would get 🙈 But I stand by what I said. He was looking for a f- (you know 😉) and Sutton was, too. She just didn't know what she signed up for 🤣 And OMG the first meeting 🙈 But honestly, the second one's even funnier 🤣 I mean, who wants to know the smexual interests of their boss? OK, your freaking 🔥 boss 😉 I wouldn't say he falls first, but he falls harder than he ever expected to fall 😎
But that's not all. Sure, you might think boss x intern, nothing special... Yeah, dom, we know that already... No! There is more. And honestly, the 🌶️ is not such a huge point in this book. Yes, it happens, but it's more about everything else. Especially the past. Jagger's as well as Sutton's. I didn't expect that 😲, and yes, it's dramatic, so be aware of it.
I don't know about you, but I so love it when the FMC has a gay best friend 😁 They often cause the most "trouble" or fun. And the nicknames Miles has for Jagger 🤣 Daddy Dom is the most innocent one 😎
Thanks to the author for trusting me with an ARC 🩷
He lives by a set of rules. She might be his one exception.
I just wanted a distraction, something to take the edge off before facing a wedding I was dreading. So on the flight back to New York, I signed up for a dating app. Harmless enough, right?
Wrong.
Turns out, it wasn’t just any app—it catered to people with very specific tastes. By the time I realized it, I was already on my date.
Tall, confident, and sinfully handsome, Jagger Langston seemed like the full package. The chemistry between us was instant—electric enough to burn the whole city down. Until I walked into my new internship Monday morning, ready to put the weekend behind me, and there he was—my boss.
Now I’m caught between the rules he lives by—and the temptation to make him break every single one of them.
I absolutely loved Sutton and Jagger’s story! I was hooked within the first few pages, and there were so many laugh-out-loud moments, especially surrounding their first meeting. The banter was fantastic, the chemistry undeniable, and the story kept me engaged from start to finish. A fun, flirty, and addictive read I’d definitely recommend!
I very much enjoyed the slight age-gap, forbidden workplace romance between Sutton and Jagger. Their initial meeting may have ended in embarrassed disaster for Sutton, but what follows made up for it in the progressing relationship that ensues.
I love a good workplace romance, especially the excitement of possibly getting caught. And in Sutton and Jagger’s case, he is her “bosses, bosses boss” and she is a brand-new intern, who obviously stands to lose the most if things go wrong.
Vi wove multiple issues through this story. Not only are there an age gap and the dynamic of boss/employee, but both Jagger and Sutton had underlying traumas they were dealing with. I loved how both characters opened to each other, something they had never done with anyone before.
My heart truly went out to both characters multiple times while reading. And while I may not have agreed with decisions Jagger made towards the end of the story, I can fully understand how he was in uncharted territory and really doing the best he could. And Sutton, for only being twenty-four, had a good head on her shoulders and made some incredibly wise decisions that most people would have been shocked at, me included.
The epilogue left me with a soggy mess of tears and a huge smile on my face. Another delightful story from Vi!
What a way to start off the year. This was another amazing story by Vi Keeland. Narrated perfectly by Andi Arndt and Sebastian York in duet.
Sutton and Jagger match together on an app for people with certain proclivities, much to Sutton’s surprise. Sutton is a very innocent 24 year old, while Jagger is a very experienced 32 year old. They are both very attracted to one another, but Sutton is just too inexperienced for Jagger. Sutton is a little sad that she won’t see Jagger again, but knows it’s probably for the best. Shocked is an understatement when she starts her internship and Jagger runs the company she will be working for.
Jagger knows he needs to keep his distance from Sutton, but there is a pull there that he can’t seem to fight. So he decides to be her mentor while she is interning at the company. It doesn’t take long for Jagger to start interweaving himself into her life. Neither of them can fight the pull towards each other.
I loved their chemistry and how their relationship grew throughout the story. I really loved how Jagger was there for her when she was put in uncomfortable situations with her ex. And how he went to battle for her with things from her past.
I say this every time, but each Vi book gets better than the one before. I always look forward to a new one from Vi.
Thanks so much to Vi Keeland for the advance copy and the ALC.
I knew this was going to be good, but it somehow managed to be even better than I expected, so much so that after I finished reading, I listened to the audiobook too, and the narrators did an amazing job bringing the story to life. I’ve read so many of Vi’s books and they’re always incredibly well written, with standout characters and MMCs that I can’t help but fall for every single time.
I really loved both the FMC and MMC here. They’re damaged in very different ways, which added so much emotional depth to the story. I swooned, laughed, and definitely shed a few tears, but don’t worry, HEA guaranteed. Jagger was everything: confident, cocky, smart, dominant, and clearly broken in ways that made him impossible not to love. Sutton was such a fun, vibrant character, especially considering everything she went through when she was younger, and Jagger was incredibly lucky to cross paths with her. Miles, Sutton’s best friend, was also a highlight. He was supportive, hilarious, and added so much heart and humor to the story, I loved their banter!
If you love a workplace romance (think boss x intern) with a dominant, dirty-talking alpha MMC, a sweet, life loving, smart FMC, incredible banter, emotional moments, lots of spice and a little bit of action, you absolutely need to pick this one up.
From the very first chapter, The Exception pulled me in and refused to let go. The chemistry between Sutton and Jagger is instant, electric, and impossible to ignore. Their banter crackles, the tension simmers, and the emotional beats hit just as hard as the spicy ones. There were moments I didn’t know whether I wanted to throat punch Jagger or give him a standing ovation and I loved every second of that emotional rollercoaster.
Sebastian York and Andi Arndt were phenomenal. This duet narration was next-level good. Their performances brought so much depth, heat, humor, and vulnerability to the story that I felt completely immersed from start to finish. I was fully transported into Vi Keeland’s world and didn’t want to leave.
The balance of spice, plot, emotional reflection, and laugh out loud moments was perfect. If you love a boss/employee trope done right, sharp banter, and a story that keeps you hooked both emotionally and audibly, this audiobook is a must listen.
As an advance listener, I can confidently say this is one of my top reads of 2025, and I already can’t wait to go back and relive my favorite bookmarked moments.
After matching on a ‘dating’ app and discovering she misunderstood the purpose of the app on their first date Sutton and Jagger parted amicably despite their instant attraction, only to discover the guy Sutton met on the app is her new boss. The fact Sutton isn’t intimidated by Jaggers experience or being her boss had me loving her instantly. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. And Jagger, wow, this man was a goner from the moment they met. How he looks out for her because of his instant obsession is cute but also very hot. But their attraction went deeper than just physical and the way they were similar with difficult pasts, aligning interests and deep conversation made me absolutely love this book. The tension and slow burn are burning just right, there is even some suspense and mixed in with the humor from Miles to ease some of the tension between them and offer some encouragement are hilarious.
I was lucky enough to read this book as an arc and thankful to Vi Keeland and Give Me Books pr because I absolutely loved it.
I loved it 🫠 another book by dear Vi Keeland that didn't disappoint in the slightest. Reading Vi Keeland is like coming home, knowing that the book will comfort you, embrace you, and bring you love and life. Jagger made me sigh, just like he did Sutton. Whenever this man spoke or did something, we both sighed 😅🔥 Sutton is a warrior, an intelligent woman, a nerd, and her heart is in the right place. 🫠 Miles, who is Sutton's best friend, I need a Miles in my life, I laughed so much whenever he was in a scene, and I needed more scenes with him. I loved the book, but I thought the ending was a little rushed. I would have liked to see a little more of Jagger and Sutton after the scene with Silas. Other than that, there's nothing to point out. The couple's chemistry is brutal. I felt every bit of chemistry between the characters. The hottest scenes were very good and made me feel 🔥🔥🔥 There's not much more to say. It's a book I highly recommend, like all the books Vi Keeland writes and delivers. ❤️🥳
Oh my goshhhhhhh. Gawwwwddddd. This was everything.
I think I’d read a cookbook in another language by Ms Keeland.
I consumed this book in one sitting. And. It’s not a small sized book.
Jagger. He’s fabulous. Confident but not cocky. Dominant but willing to listen. And a protector at heart.
Sutton. She’s wonderful. With some broken edges.
She has to go home for a crappy wedding she’d rather avoid. She meets a guy from a dating app, but didn’t read the fine print or understand the dating app she was on.
The guy turned out to be a gentleman. They got a chuckle and went about their day.
Until he walks into the rehearsal dinner.
This book hits all the right spaces. Heat. So hot. Sweet. Despite what Jagger says. And soooo heart has broken . From all Angles.
Completely recommend. Gosh which I could start it over and go on blind again. Soooo good.
This book is one of the reasons why I love Vi’s books- they are interesting, engaging and never a dull moment in between. I finished this in less than 12 hours.
The Exception is the story of Sutton and Jagger, who meet under very funny circumstances and now have to work together.
This was funny with a little bit of kink and had the right amount of spice. I love that both main characters were messy and down to earth.
It was emotional and had various layers to it and although it dealt with some sensitive issues, the author dealt with them with grace and compassion.
This is a couple I’d love to catch up with and I hope the author will treat us to an extended epilogue.
If you love workplace romance, opposite attracts then you will enjoy this.
I received an advanced copy and my review is voluntary.
Another hit. This one has that gruffish billionaire boss who wants the girl, but won't allow himself to have her, except for her body. Meanwhile he is a tad possessive of her when other men are near and doesn't want to lose her, so he's a bit confusing. I loved both characters, but I especially love her, because she's smart and strong, and isn't afraid to ask the hard questions. She may not be able to read him, but she knows him by his actions. There are laughs and tears. There is spice. Aside from the romance, there is some heavier subject matters discussed including mental health issues and PTSD. It's easy to read and hard to put down. Wonderful characters and a well told story. Alternates POVs, but one is present and the other is from the past. You'll fall in love with the characters... even the side characters. :)
After no luck with men (see douche-nozzle in the dictionary and see photo of ex who is now marrying her sister), Sutton finds herself spontaneously signing up for a trial on a dating app…a particular type of dating app…wink wink nudge nudge…if ya know what I mean.
Upon meeting her date from the app- Sutton goes on to learn that this gorgeous specimen of a man is none other than the CEO of the company she is about to begin her internship with. Did I mention her step-father also works for said company??
Jagger Langston had a past that haunts him. Between family with mental health, two nieces whom he routinely cares for when his sister can’t, and PTSD that terrorizes his sleep…Jagger is equal parts sex appeal and tragic.
They can’t stay away from each other, but also determine they cannot be together. The struggle is real…
DNF a few pages in. I have to be in a very specific mood to read this and I’m finding myself more distracted by the writing or world building moments that just totally feel off, in a way that makes you wonder: is this character … human? This isn’t spoiling anything, just in the few couple pages we have:
“He shrugged. “These match your panties.” I couldn’t help but laugh. My best friend had a collection of more than a hundred pairs of glasses, each more colorful than the last. He had a penchant for matching them to his outfits, but pairing them with my panties was a new one”
Ouch, like come on. She also forgot how big a plane is and there is an ice cream cart in first class. I can tell you that between LAX and JFK there is not a flight with an ice cream cart. I get escapism but it needs to resemble real life a bit more.
I absolutely love The Exception! It was captivating, intriguing and beautiful. Sutton is amazing woman. She is intelligent, brave, strong willed, and pretty. She is on her way to a wedding of her ex that she is dreading to go when she decides to do something to distract herself. Sutton unexpected found someone who makes her world turned upside in a good way. Jagger is a good man with a good heart. He is intelligent, rich, handsome, loves control and rules. Jagger is looking forward to a distraction when he gets a surprise. This is start of Jagger's obsession. Their chemistry is off the charts. They keep me entertained with their banter and made me fall in love with both of them. Vi has been killing it with her magnificent writing and stories. She definitely a one click! Amazing work again Vi Keeland!🎉👏🏾🥳🥰
First of all, Miles. May we all have a gay bff as awesome as him. My goshhh, he was hilarious and I loved every single scene he was in. The one where Jagger walked into Sutton’s apartment all alpha male and Miles had been on the phone had me ROLLING. “That was hot!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 And then the dinner scene where Miles asks about Jagger’s necklace present to Sutton? Sigh. He was the besssst! 😂😂
Jagger — 🔥!!!!!!!!! I absolutely LOVED everything about him. So. Damn. HOT. 🥵 total cinnamon roll alpha. Super protective of Sutton and I was there for it.
I also really loved Sutton’s character. Smart, down to earth, funny… but I loved most how she brought out Jagger’s fun side.
The drama added to the plot was FIRE and I was allllll for it. Like I said, this book had me on a total chokehold.
Signing up for a dating app meant for people with acquired tastes leads Sutton straight to Jagger. Once they realize the mix-up, that should’ve been the end of it… right?
Wrong—because Jagger turns out to be her new boss, and that instant, undeniable chemistry is impossible to ignore.
There’s nothing I love more than a hot, brooding MMC who likes to take control, paired with a strong FMC who ultimately brings him to his knees—and Jagger and Sutton deliver exactly that. Add in the fact that they’re both carrying their own past traumas, and the story becomes even more layered, emotional, and addictive.
Sexy, swoony, and guaranteed to leave you blushing and wanting more—this one is peak Vi Keeland goodness.
