Black Romance - Sports Romance - Friends to Lovers - Forbidden Romance - Dark Romance - Redemption Story
Sebastian Boom was born into a life of legacy and expectation, raised to chase perfection on and off the basketball court. Lottie Daniels grew up fighting for peace in a world that never handed her anything easily. He thrives on order. She moves through chaos. They shouldn’t fit, but somehow, they do.
What starts as a lust-filled friendship turns into something neither of them can escape. He becomes her calm when life spins out of control, and she’s the spark that reminds him what it means to feel alive. But calm doesn’t mean safe, and sparks have a way of burning when the past refuses to stay buried.
From late-night talks and basketball games to choices that leave scars and years spent apart, their connection refuses to break no matter how hard they try to fight it. It’s as if the world keeps playing games with their desires, giving them an inch and then taking it away over and over again.
In the end, they learn that the real game isn’t played under the lights. It’s fought in the heart, where love can wound as easily as it heals.
The Winning Play is a story of passion and pain, control and surrender, and finding the one person who makes every risk, every fall, and every victory worth it. This raw, emotional, and unforgettable story reminds us that peace is possible after chaos, that healing is the truest victory, and that sometimes the greatest win of all is learning you were the prize from the very beginning.
I’m a small-town romance author and mom of three, always juggling family life and deadlines. I write love stories filled with supportive friend groups, real-life challenges, and happily ever afters that feel earned. I’m based in Atlanta, where Southern sunsets and everyday moments inspire the stories I tell. When I’m not writing, you’ll usually find me watching soccer with my family, driving my daughters to dance, staying up late binge-watching shows, hauling my son to chess club, or rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs.
4.5/5 This book is messssssssyyyyyyy!!! If you’re not someone that enjoys mess, this probably won’t be for you but if you love that in a story you will EAT THIS UP!! This book was over 500 pages and I couldn’t put it down because there wasn’t one boring part of the story. It was heartbreaking, deep, and definitely made me suspend belief on some parts of the story. Felt like I was watching a movie while reading it!
I received an ARC to give an honest review and ....
I loved every minute of this book. This was truly a rollercoaster ride. I had very specific timestamps (for my Kindle mini peeps - 29%, 44%, 85% and 86%) where I was truly GAGGED. I'm honestly in awe of how Lauren sucks you into this world so quickly. Lottie and Bash are end game, but you do have to buckle in for the ride to get to end game. So many people failed Lottie and this book made my empath heart weep (I did cry along the way), but I'm glad about the way the story wrapped up. I truly cannot stand Lotties "Daddy", Marcus so called "Daddy" and Dee. This love story felt so real and raw, it's not all rainbows and sunshine BUT ... it does make you feel it all. The good, the bad and so much chaos in between. 5/5, I'm sad it's over honestly.
I loved this book so much. It completely pulled me in, and I honestly teared up while reading. Sebastian and Lottie’s story was raw, emotional, and beautifully intense. The way their connection grows—from lust-filled friends to something deep and unbreakable—hit me right in the heart. Every moment between them felt earned, especially as they navigated love, loss, and the scars left behind by their pasts.
This book gave me friends-to-lovers, opposites attract, found peace after chaos, and second-chance energy in the most emotional way. What I learned from this story is that healing takes time, and love doesn’t erase pain—but it can give you the strength to face it. Sometimes the real victory isn’t winning or being perfect, but realizing your worth and choosing yourself, even when it’s hard.
This story wrecked me in the best way and reminded me why emotional romance will always have my heart. ❤️
Thank you for letting me have the opportunity to read this ARC.
4.5. I really enjoyed this jammed pack book. This was like reading a Tubi movie but in the best way. From page one to the last page this book had my edges snatched and my chest was tight. I do feel as it was a bit drawn out but nevertheless i enjoyed the wild ride.
This ARC was given in exchange for an honest review
I have no words. The rollercoaster this book took me on is hard to explain but I would get on it again. This was written so well! The twists and turns had me speechless at times. Everyone was so human. They made decisions that from the outside looking in were so unnecessary. But when you put yourself in their shoes they made much sense. People make mistakes all the time but how they recover is what matters. And they definitely got themselves of the cliff’s edge in the end.
Special thanks to the author & @blackromancebooktours for my gifted e-ARC in exchange for an honest review‼️
When it’s meant to be you can’t fight fate. Lottie Daniels had it all and lived a life of privilege until one decision costs her and her family everything. Her choice to destroy all she’s known came with a price her father ensured she’d pay everyday of her life. When she meets Sebastian Boom she assumes he’s just like the rest they all want a piece of Lottie with the Body. Only this time she’s wrong. Bash sees a woman broken and torn between doing what’s right and what’s she’s told in order to survive. Instead of taking more from her he adds something to her life that she’s been missing . . . real love‼️
This is book 2 in the Playing for Keeps series and Lacey gives readers a romance rooted in friendship, unbreakable bonds, and a love that’s meant to stand the test of time. Lottie’s character went through it from dealing with a sick parent to having a parent who was actually sick and a man who was set on making her life miserable. The girl really couldn’t catch a break but Bash was everything she needed and I loved the way he was willing to protect her at all costs.
The entanglements in this book were pure chaos. Kya, Marcus, Dee, Bash, and Lottie made my head hurt just a bunch of hearts caught up in the mix. There was so much drama and plenty of action it was never a dull moment. I don’t know who I hated more in the book Reggie Daniels or William Dupoint.
We get alternate POVs from Lottie and Bash which gives readers the chance to see both characters internal struggles. Their connection and bond will remind readers that love conquers all. No matter the distance, time apart, or what happened between the two they always found a way back to each other. Overall, I enjoyed the book and if you’re someone who loves heartfelt sports romances with secrets, unexpected twists, and a persistent threat of danger I recommend reading this book‼️
Lauren Lacey delivers a deeply emotional, unputdownable romance with The Winning Play, a story that blends passion, healing, and heart-stopping intensity in all the best ways.
Charlotte “Lottie” Daniels and Sebastian “Bash” Boom are the perfect depiction of opposites who were always meant to collide. She comes from chaos, he thrives on order, and together they create a love that feels raw, real, and unforgettable. Their journey isn’t a fairytale—it’s a reckoning. Lacey takes readers on a powerful ride of self-discovery, survival, and ultimately, the beauty of choosing love after pain.
This book captured me from page one with its stunning prose and heartfelt quotes. Some lines will stay with me forever:
“You deserve the kind of love that sees you, truly sees you, and stays.” “You’re my winning play. Remember that.” “Because every calm needs a little chaos.”
The chemistry between Lottie and Bash is undeniable, but what sets this story apart is the depth of its emotional core. Lacey doesn’t shy away from exploring trauma, redemption, and the quiet, courageous steps toward healing. The pacing, the tension, and the beautiful balance of romance with real-life struggles had me fully invested.
Fans of sports romance, friends-to-lovers, and stories that embrace both the light and the dark sides of love will be swept away. The Winning Play isn’t just about falling in love—it’s about finding the strength to believe you deserve it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 — A raw, emotional, and triumphant romance that will stay in your heart long after!
Lauren Lacey put her all into this series.... I don't even know how she is coping after writing The Winning Play. Can we say EMOTIONAL DAMAGE for 500 of the 508 pages. Someone please check on the author!
While this is an absolute page turner, it is also a book that you have to step away and take breaks from. The amount of trauma that occurs in this book is endless but a rose blooms through the concrete. The beauty that can be found in between these pages comes in the form of unconditional love and found family. No matter how toxic, messy and drama filled this group may seem from the outside... it's the unbreakable bond that stands the test of time.
This very much feels like a soap opera that rivals Days of Our Lives and As the World Turns. Lottie's secrets have secrets... is she the doll or the monster? Bash's addiction to Lottie nearly kills him but is the only thing that makes me feel alive Kya is cinderella locked up in a cold dusty cellar waiting for somebody to come and set her free Marcus has a heart so big but so broken and may quite literally leave it all on the court
Don't even get me started on my thoughts on all of the parents....Sherri, Charles, William, Kelly.
My only critique is 4th quarter felt very rushed! Which sounds silly since it is a 500+ page book....
OMG!!! Best book period! Lauren will destroy your heart and soul then slowly put it back together. And I love it!! Check them triggers beforehand.
I absolutely loved this story. I had to savor it. I know it was over 500 pages but I wanted it to be longer.
This book gave me all the feels from emotional, laughter, healing, ready to fight and scratch some people. It takes strength to go thru the emotions this book will put you through. It’s so worth it. It was raw, deep and beautiful written It will wreck you and heal you too.
Lottie and Bash are for sure my favorite. They went thru so many different phases together and always had this magnetic pull. They both are trying to get through life. Everything that is possible will happen. You will question everything and wonder if they will make it through. You will just have to read this book and find out!
Love isn’t easy and you have to work hard for it especially if you found your special person.
If Lauren never writes another book, this was enough. This was an amazing story that will remind you that choosing strategy and peace over revenge will make you win every time. I truly love the ups and downs of Lottie’s and Boom’s story.
An ARC of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review.
This was my introduction to Lauren Lacey, and The Winning Play was a wild, emotional roller coaster! I’m extremely grateful for the thorough content warning from the author, because this was some heavy ish! While it had a great plot, I feel it was unnecessarily long, and we could have done without much of the constant back-and-forth between Lottie and Bash as they chased one another over 12 years. I also felt like there were quite a few loopholes and fast forwards with no context for exactly what happened. Despite the length and loopholes, I found myself unable to put the book down to find out what happened next.
This story follows the love story of Sebastian (Bash) and Charlotte (Lottie). Lottie comes from a difficult upbringing where Bash is a bit more privileged. Their love story is pure, complicated, obsessive, thrilling and wonderful all at the same time. I had a good time reading this. Let me tell you though sometimes these characters are going to be super duper annoying. But also it’s kind of what makes them great because they are flawed. If you love a good romance where no matter what they always come back to each other, this is the book for you.
Thank you BRBF Book Tours and Lauren Lacey for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
2.54/5 ⭐️
My written review:
The Couple 2/5 This love was truly toxic, which I know some readers would love, but unfortunately for me I like romances that feel like what I would consider love. At first I felt it, but with all the mess, no matter how entertaining, at the end of it all I just knew I couldn’t call this love. Like I said I know there’s people who would love this couple, I’m just not one of them. I found the idea of a Boom love curse endearing though, so I’m considering listening to the first book for that reason.
Plot 3.4/5 Y’all I was not ready 🤣 no blurb or trigger warnings coulda prepared me for this one and ofc my eyes skimmed over the “dark” label. This book takes place over almost a decade. Lowkey reminds me of the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo in the way it takes you through a journey. If you like books that remind you of empire or scandal, this one’s for you. I think I might’ve handled this better as an audiobook, because it’s really a lot. I’m slightly impressed but also exhausted. I wanted to DNF about halfway through I can’t lie, but I stuck through.
The Supporting Cast 2.22/5 All the characters were somewhat good distractions for lack of a better word. It was intriguing how everyone came into play and basically formed a trauma bonded gang. But honestly every character in this book does something abhorrent. Which again, readers may love, but is not my personal preference.
Overall I honestly think I just might not be well versed enough in dark romance for my opinion to matter lol. Some people love a messy book and if that’s you this honestly might be for you.
Slightly off topic but I have other books by this author in my tbr but now I’m lowkey spooked. I know your not supposed to just a book by its cover but from the first chapter of this book I felt played by the cover 😭 Not sure if she typically writes dark romances but man, what a ride fr.
ARC REVIEW.... Let me start by saying this book had me hooked from the beginning. The minute you meet Lottie, you automatically know you want her to win. She does the best she can with the cards she's been dealt, just to make sure she and her mom win. Everyone in her life takes and takes and takes draining her. Her dad is pimping her out and selling her to the highest bitter so she can pay back his long sharks. Her mom is sick with cancer and she's working her hardest just to make sure she could pay for treatment, all while in school. She has no friends because she can't trust anyone. Then she meets Sebastian..... and oh my goodness the love this man has for this young lady is everything. Sebastian is a top college basketball player that is NBA bound. He's the son of a governor and a judge, but wants to keep that part of his life private. He meets Lottie and it's like his world is turned upside down just from looking at her. He wants to do everything he can to make sure she's good at all times.
Their love connection is so good but it's also draining. That's what made me take a star for this book. It was like every time you thought they would get together something pulled them apart and this goes on for so long to where you just wanted to stop.
Other than that you will love all the characters in this book with the exception of William DuPont, Lottie's father, and Dee. Ughhhh I wanted to lay hands on all three of them.
This book is definitely a must read
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Lottie and Bash are truly living rent free in my head. This story was a rollercoaster ride I was not prepared for, and from the very beginning I was locked in and rooting hard for Lottie. She went through so much turmoil that I was honestly traumatized for her. She didn’t deserve any of it and all of those adults in her life failed her.
Bash was the bright spot. The way he loves her and truly sees her from day one was beautiful. He didn’t just want her — he understood her. Lottie also brought out just the right amount of chaos in his life. They really did balance each other out.
I also loved Lottie’s found family — Marcus, Kya, Morgan, and Nessa — they added so much heart to the story. But whew, the obstacles? From her daddy, to Marcus’ daddy, to Dee and her mess… it was constant. The constant push and pull of their forbidden loved had me stressed out. They had so much chemistry that it gave that moth to a flame energy.
This friends-to-lovers romance was one I didn’t even realize I needed, but I’m so glad I read it. I honestly wish it didn’t have to end.

The Winning Play was my first introduction to this author’s work. If this book is any indication of what Lauren Lacey brings to the table, I’ll definitely be diving into more of her catalog. This story is messy, chaotic, and packed with drama.
What could possibly go right when an obsessive star basketball player—whose mother played a role in the downfall of a family—falls hard for the midnight ballerina of that very family? The answer is simple: absolutely nothing AND everything.
This novel explores powerful themes: friends to lovers, family betrayal, soul ties, revenge, redemption. One of its strongest messages is that blood doesn’t automatically make a family. Loyalty and trust do. Strangers become friends, and friends become the family you build for yourself.
Lottie, our fierce FMC, is the heartbeat of this novel. She is a fighter in every sense of the word. Every time her back is against the wall, she refuses to stay down. She is a hustler, a provider, a loyal friend, sometimes a necessary foe, a keeper of secrets, and undeniably a boss. For most of the book, Lottie puts everyone else ahead of herself, often at great personal cost. Her resilience is both inspiring and heartbreaking, especially as revenge becomes her driving force and blinds her to what she is losing in the process.
Then there’s Bash, our MMC. From the very beginning, he accepts Lottie—flaws, fire, chaos and all. He doesn’t try to reshape her; he simply sees her. Where Lottie doubts herself, Bash recognizes her worth. He orbits around her. Yet their relationship is anything but smooth. The constant push and pull between them can feel exhausting at times. I found myself yelling at them to figure it out and get it together (LOL).
Every triumph comes at a cost, most often paid by Lottie. You will go through the highs and lows with Lottie, Bash, and the crew. You will start to celebrate the wins as if these characters are real because you really start to root for them. One of their antagonist always seems to be one step ahead. When that pivotal "gotcha" moment happens, it was so satisfying. Lottie fights to win until the very end, but what makes her journey unforgettable is realizing what “winning” truly means.
Listen… this book stressed me OUT! And I mean that in the best possible way. 😂 The Winning Play is one of those sports romances where you think you’re just signing up for chemistry with cute banter and instead you get emotional warfare, layered drama, miscommunication that makes you want to scream into a pillow, and a love story that truly has to fight to survive. First, the tension between Bash and Lottie? Immediate. Electric. 15k!? But what really elevated this story for me was how much was at stake beyond the romance. This wasn’t just about two people liking each other, it was about reputations, pressure, expectations, pride, and past hurt that was still very present. And the drama? Wheeew! The drama hits you hard from the prologue! There were multiple moments where I had to pause because the secondhand stress was REAL. The misunderstandings. The outside noise. The internal battles. I kept thinking, “Just talk to each other!” But at the same time, the emotional reactions felt authentic and shaped the characters. One of the most intense elements for me was the way power was portrayed. This book really explores how power (whether it’s status, influence, money, or public perception) can corrupt people. There were moments where I genuinely couldn’t believe how evil someone could be towards their own flesh and blood! What I appreciated most was the emotional growth for Lottie, Bash, Marcus and Kya. They had to confront their insecurities, own their mistakes, and decide whether love was worth risking everything they’d built. I loved their new found family bond as well! By the final stretch, my heart was racing. I was frustrated, anxious, hopeful and fully invested. And when everything finally came together? So satisfying! The resolution didn’t feel rushed or convenient. It felt like a true winning play.
Disclaimer: this book was provided to me as an ARC for my honest review.
The Winning Play was a really good read. This was my first book by the author and I really did not know what to expect. Having read the synopsis and seeing the cover, I thought this would be a cute romance read but I was pleasantly surprised to find complex characters dealing with trauma, loss, betrayal and secrets. This story gave much much more than I expected and I ended up enjoying it.
I really liked how we got to follow the characters for a number of years so we got to really know them. I think the character development was really well done by the author. Bash and Lottie also had amazing chemistry that jumped off the pages. I loved their friendship, their banter, and the way they really had each other's backs. As we see in the story, Lottie went from a debutant that had everything and after turning in her dad, she had to give up a lot. She had to do things she just wasnt proud of to survive and to make sure her family was ok but Bash never judge her for that. He was always there to hype her up and hold her down when needed. I loved that about the book.
Another thing I really liked was the found family aspect. The friendships between Lottie, Bash, Marcus, Kya, and the way they turned their friendship into a family was really great to see. These young people really had horrible parents and to see them create something beautiful, and better than what they had as children was good to see.
Though I really enjoyed this book, it was a little cumbersome and somewhat difficult to keep up with. There were a lot of different characters/players and storylines. There was drama, intrigue, mystery, death. It was a lot! I read this book over a span of three or so days but I think its because I did not go into it expecting it to be as emotionally heavy as it ended up being.
But overall, I enjoyed it. I plan on going back to read the first book in the series and I look forward to reading more from this author.
4.5⭐️ - the beginning of this book is trauma, trauma, trauma. The way Lottie is used by her father, has no friends and gives everything to her sick mother is heartbreaking.
Her relationship with Bash, his family and the group of friends, who become family is everything. Then when Lottie seeks vengeance for all the wrongs done to her makes you want to cheer but…
This story has a lot of crazy, a lot of love, some confusion and misdirection and a HEA.
The story: Lottie is one of the top earners at Club Lure. She’s working off her father’s debt. BTW he’s in jail. She’s doing all she can to take care of her Mother who has cancer. She’s also a college student. Her life is a chaotic storm.
Bash is the star of the college basketball team. He lives his life orderly, composed and he’s very focused. The son of the Governor of Georgia and the Head Supreme Court Judge. He has a series of girlfriends but no one serious. Until he meets Lottie.
The book encompasses 15 years of their lives. The ups and downs. Times when they’re together, and times when they’re far apart. However, through everything they keep finding their way back to each other.
In the meantime, there’s a fake marriage between Lottie and a friend. A child born out of wedlock and hidden away. Loads of basketball. Lottie forming a new relationship with someone who used her. An intricate plan of vengeance that results in an almost murder.
Then Bash walks away from Lottie to have a relationship with another woman. Yet they end up together with a HEA but it’s a journey to get there.
This would have been a 5 ⭐️ read but there’s a point in the book where everything wraps up too smoothly after their love story having been such a challenge. Otherwise if there’s a third book in the series, I’m there for it.
Don't let the pretty covers in this series full you. Charlotte "Lottie" Daniels went through a lot in this book before she was even 21 and the sad part is that it was at the hands of someone who she thought she could trust and that she was helping out. Sebastian "Bash" Boom had his eyes on school and basketball but one night out changed their lives in a way neither of them could imagine. What started as a friends to friends with benefits situation quickly turned into so much more and both Lottie and Bash were hit with feelings they shouldn't pursue but found a way to do so anyway.
This book can be triggering so definitely check the trigger warning. I empathized with Lottie and wanted so desperately for her to get out of her situation. Just when it seemed she was winning, she was pulled down again but not without a fight. At times I was side eying her mother but I was ultimately happy with how their relationship turned out. Her father was the worst ever and he deserved what he got times 10. I was happy that she was able to get some revenge on those who hurt her but it didn't consume her and Sherri and Callie were back in this one too doing what they do best. If you read the first book then you know who I am talking about.
In the end I enjoyed the story and how everything unfolded. In this book Lauren Lacey explored what you will do for love even when the odds aren't n your favor and also how deceitful those closest to you can be at times. She also showed how true love never actually dies and if it is meant to be it will be. This rang true for all the main characters mentioned in the book.
ARC Review 📚 Book Title: The Winning Play ✍🏽Author: Lauren Lacy 📕 Format: 📱 ⭐️ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶 Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
🕑 Quick Take: Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Daniels is among the youngest CEOs in the league, but her path to success wasn't easy.
Ten years earlier, Lottie met Sebastian ‘Bash’ Boom, the son of Judge Charles Boom and Governor Sherri Carter, a hopeful professional basketball player burdened with high expectations.
Lottie and Bash are instantly attracted to each other. But will life’s obstacles, social expectations, and respectability politics keep them apart?
✨ Tropes: - Forbidden Romance - Fake Dating - Found Family - Sports Romance - Unintentional Love Triangle (or Pentagon/Octagon)
⚠️ Heads Up (Trigger/Content warnings): - Controlling and Estranged Parental Relationships - Parental Abuse - Sexual Assault and Sex Trafficking - Emotional and Psychological Abuse - Parental Loss - Deportation and Family Separation
💭 Final Thoughts: This book was a messy good time. This story draws you in and doesn’t let go, blending themes of redemption and healing. It’s a slow burn with numerous shocking moments. Central themes include survival, revenge, resilience, and the beauty found within chaos. It was emotionally layered and complex. I loved “The World Around Us” by Lauren Lacey. She didn't fail to deliver the heat in the second book, “The Winning Play,” in the Playing for Keeps series.
The Winning Play by Lauren Lacey had no business hitting me the way it did. I knew I was in for a ride after loving “The World Around Us”, but damn I’m speechless once again. Where do I begin…. I went in expecting a cute sports romance and walked out emotionally invested, swooning, and lowkey mad that it ended. This book felt extremely real—the chemistry wasn’t forced, the tension wasn’t rushed, and the emotions actually landed HARD. You can feel the buildup in every interaction, every look, every moment where they’re clearly fighting what’s already there. I loved that it wasn’t just about the romance, but about ambition, trauma, pressure, and figuring out who you are when winning isn’t as simple as it looks.
The characters felt human. Flawed, guarded, stubborn in ways that made sense. I appreciated that the relationships didn’t magically fix everything—there was growth, miscommunication, vulnerability, and accountability. The sports element added stakes without overshadowing the love story, which is hard to do and Lauren Lacey nailed it. The banter was fun, the emotional moments actually hurt (in a good way), and the payoff was so worth it. When these characters hurt, I hurt. Literally felt ever inch of pain. I loved this book so much and I’ll continuously recommend this series!
This is the second book in the Playing for Keeps series by Lauren Lacey, and I want to be very clear do not let the cover fool you. While I’m not a fan of the cover art, this is not a rom-com. This is a romantic dramedy between Lottie and Boom.
The book starts off slow, and by Chapter 5 I thought the story was going to be predictable. I was completely wrong. Each chapter adds more drama, and by Chapter 16 everything explodes. The twists keep coming, the mess is truly messy, and I found myself yelling at the characters more than once.
You will root for the main characters while also getting frustrated with them for constantly getting in their own way. I lost count of how many times I wanted to shake Boom, and Lottie brought an entirely different level of frustration.
This book is a great reminder that DNA does not make you family. The fathers in this story were especially frustrating, while the mother-daughter and mother-son relationships were layered and emotional. Though sometimes complicated, these relationships ultimately come from a place of wanting their children to be loved and supported.
Don’t let the cover deter you. If you enjoy messy drama, emotional tension, and characters who will test your patience, this book is worth picking up.
Tropes: sports romance , dark past , new found family , second chance romance and family drama.
Initial thought : Slow burn , you don’t have to read book 1 to start on this book. The story will have you in a chokehold, this is my kind of story. Chefs kiss
Book overview: It’s said that Lottie and Bash ain’t good for each other but fate says different. After numerous attempts to stay away from each other their magnetic pull wins.
Lottie experiences pain, manipulation, and entrapment from age 17 which her after orchestrated out of pure hate for his only child. Being the sole provider for her terminally ill mother ,all she believes she is good for is paying her father’s made up debts. Until she meets her neighbour Bash Boom , the Man that changes her perspective on life and tells her she has a voice and deserves love.
Bash is the youngest in his family, a star basketball player that comes from influence and wealth. He is orderly , patient and loyal to the core. Once he decided that life without Lottie isn’t an option, he does everything and anything to support his Winning Play!
Black Romance Fest Book Tour Review 📚 I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was layered and complex. It followed Lottie and Sebastian, and I really appreciated how much depth the story tried to hold at once.
Lottie was a strong character, but she had a lot of trauma that she needed to overcome. As I am a clinical social worker, therapy would have been beneficial for her at the start. There were so many moments where it felt like she was carrying everything alone, and it made her choices feel intense and sometimes hard to follow—but also very human.
Sebastian had real ride or die moments, and I understand why he at times needed a break and wanted someone he can feel safe and normal with. His perspective added balance, and I liked that the book didn’t pretend love automatically makes the weight of someone else’s pain easy to hold.
I loved this book, but I also felt like it was so complex that at times it was confusing. Some areas felt too slow or rushed, and honestly it could have benefited from being two separate books. Even with that, it was a powerful read.
This story was deep, raw, and emotional. The trauma that Lottie suffered, all from people who were supposed to love her, was intense. The fallout from two grown men making a decision on behalf of a young girl brought harm to COUNTLESS people; especially Lottie and those closest to her.
I liked Bash but I didn’t like the fact that he led Dee on for so long let alone leaving her at the altar. He knew all along that he wanted to be with Lottie, but on the other hand Deev knew that too. Idk if she was trying to win a competition or prove or point but she definitely played herself by staying with him for so long knowing he was in love with someone else. I felt torn because I was rooting for him and Lottie but I understood the need for him to try to move on; he just wasn’t ready for real.
Watching the fall of William DuPoint was delightful. He was evil in all the worst ways and more. Honestly I think they let him off a little too easily but Lottie was healing and trying to be better so I get it.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of The Winning Play. I was hooked the entire time. This book took me through there! It had me shoulder shaking, then put me right back together.
Charlotte was forced to pay the debts of her father while trying to care for her sick mother. Enduring the horrors she was forced to live through at 17 had her spiraling and carrying burdens that weren’t hers to carry. Bash was the child of political giants and a future NBA draft pick. Their paths were never meant to cross. However, when they did, they got caught up in a whirlwind.
Lottie and Bash’s journey of love and healing was raw and intense. I was rooting for them even when they made me want to pull my edges out. The way Lottie and Bash balanced each other out and supported each other even when they weren’t suppose to showed just how much they were meant to be.
From chaos to having found family that is willing to walk through the fire with you, The Winning Play had it all. I was sooo glad they got their happy ending. Lauren did her biggest one with this book.
Thank you BRBF for providing this book for review in exchange for an honest review! - The first book I read from Lauren Lacey was a Christmas novella and I said it was full of sweet lines that made me want to pick up a longer book from her. Well I sure got what I wished for with The Winning Play, a 500+ page book that was nonstop action and drama!
Don’t you dare let that cover trick you into thinking this is a cutesy romance!! This book was so raw and layered, covering so many difficult topics for a story that truly is just about a woman learning to love herself even amidst pain and struggle.
Lauren Lacey has an expansive mind because I was never able to predict what was coming next. She kept me on my toes throughout the book while also delivering such beautiful lines. I knew I was right to want to read more of her writing and The Winning Play only further increased that desire because now I want to read even more of her books.
If the synopsis interests you and you’re okay to handle the trigger warnings in this story, I definitely recommend!
The Winning Play pulled me in with the chemistry, but what kept me reading was the emotional depth. Lottie and Bash had a lot more going on than just attraction, and I appreciated that their connection came with real history, pain, and unresolved feelings. There was a strong emotional push and pull between them that made the story feel layered instead of surface-level.
What I liked most was that this didn’t just stay in sports romance territory. It had heart. It was messy, vulnerable, and healing in a way that made me root for them. Some moments hit hard, and I liked watching their relationship unfold through all that tension and emotional baggage.
I also didn’t realize this was part of a series when I started, but now I’m definitely going back to read the first installment because this one made me want more of the world.
It wasn’t quite a full 4-star read for me, so I’d say 3.75 rounded up, but it was still a strong read overall.
