Lucian Deverell has spent the last two years philandering his way across the Continent. Not that Lady Rosalie de Lacy cares a whit! She has done her best to forget the torrid moonlit kiss she once shared with the black-haired Lothario. Lucian might be the only man who has ever made her heart race. But he crushed her fragile hopes the very next day, then promptly left England to begin his legendary spree of debauchery.
What the devil is the Rake Review?
It was the letter that changed his life. It turns out that Lucian’s sanctimonious cousin, Lysander, was born on the wrong side of the blanket. This means that, instead of being penniless and untitled, Lucian is the rich and influential Viscount Valentine. Upon hearing the news, Lucian decamps for England to claim what is his.
Lucian is unsurprised to learn that his reputation back home is as black as his thick, glossy hair. But thanks to some insipid gossip sheet, the ladies of London seem to regard him as dashing instead of degenerate! He has neither time, nor interest, in playing their charming Lord Valentine. Lucian has come back to London for one reason—revenge.
And he means to start with Lady Rosalie…
Lord Valentine's Rotten February is book 2 in the multi-author series The Rake Review, Season Two. A new bachelor will fall prey to the Brazen Belle's poison pen on the first day of each month in 2026. Be sure to collect all twelve!
After reading Black Beauty for the 1,497th time, Courtney McCaskill was inspired to write her own stories. Reviews of her early work were mixed, with her fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Compton, saying, “Please stop writing all of your assignments from the point of view of a horse.”
Today, Courtney lives in Austin, Texas with the hero of her own story, who holds the distinction of being the world’s most sarcastic pediatrician. She is reliably informed by her six-year-old son that she gives THE BEST hugs, “because you’re so squishy, Mommy.” When she’s not busy almost burning down her house attempting to make a traditional Christmas pudding, she enjoys playing the piano, learning everything there is to know about Kodiak bears, and of course, curling up with a great book! This author's books are most often a slam-dunk for me, but I prefer her cinammon roll heroes. The 2nd chance trope isn't one of my faves and this just didn't work for me. I wanted to finish but ended up DNF'ing around the 60% mark. Just coudn't warm up enough to the characters or plot.
I appreciate this author sharing this advanced reader copy with me.
I’m giving this book 4.5⭐️s. The second book of The Rake Review is a wonderful addition to the collection. The second chance romance of Lucien, the new Viscount of Valentine and Lady Rosalie de Lacey was a delight to read.
Lucien has a reputation of being a rake and his recent return from the Continent sparked an article on him in the gossip leaflet The Rake Review written by Brazen Belle warning all that the notorious rake was back.
Lucien unexpectedly became the Viscount of Valentine and with his new title comes the betrothal to Lady Rosalie. Unfortunately two years ago they had an entanglement that left Rosalie heartbroken and Lucien leaving the country. When Rosalie finds out who she is now betrothed to she is knows she can’t marry him and has to find a way to get out of their marriage contract. The previous Viscount of Valentine, Lucien’s cousin Lysander tells her some information about Lucien that might be enough to convince her father to call off the wedding. She has some detective work to do and fast.
Lucien is convinced he will be marrying Rosalie and she will be a willing bride. He just has to woo her first, gain her trust and possibly atone for his behaviour two years ago. The two have such strong sexual chemistry between them. His cheeky quips and calm, laid back nature are the opposite of Rosalie’s fiery and no nonsense personality. As Rosalie investigates to try to find a her way out of their marriage and Lucien tries to woo her and she tries to resist him, their chemistry erupts even Rosalie can’t deny that they have something special.
I love Courtney McCaskill’s writing style. Her characters are so relatable and the storylines are low angst and interesting. Once I start reading I don’t want to put the book down until it’s finished and this was no exception. Lucien is a wonderful character who deserves his happiness as does Rosalie, who has been overlooked by many for years but it seems that she was just waiting for fate to come and bring her the man she didn’t know she wanted or needed but was her soul mate.
This was a beautifully written story with well developed characters, main and secondary and a plot that kept me invested until the end. The only reason I’m giving it 4.5 stars is because there was no epilogue to it. I feel a book, especially a romance book is not complete without an epilogue.
I received a special copy from the author, of which I am very grateful. I am voluntarily leaving this review.
Oh my goodness! I knew I couldn’t wait for the release of The Rake Review, Season Two, and I was absolutely right. The Brazen Belle delivers yet another delightfully scandalous “Rake of the Month” column, and this month’s entry is one for the record books.
What made this story stand out to me is how unique it felt. Lady Rosalie de Lacy is ready to attend her engagement ball when the Brazen Belle’s latest column drops—and everything comes crashing down. Lysander, her betrothed, is revealed to have been born on the wrong side of the blanket, which means he’s no longer Viscount Valentine.
In a cruel twist of fate, the true Viscount Valentine is Lucian Deverill—the only man Rosalie has ever truly loved, and the one who shattered her heart when he vanished without explanation. When her father insists that she will still marry Viscount Valentine, only now it’s Lucian, Rosalie is determined to escape the match.
Yes, Lucien is a rake but his feelings for Rosalie never wavered, He made mistakes, but he never stopped loving her and it was a delight watching her reluctantly fall for him all over again. And Lucian’s quiet confidence—that if she really looked into his character, she’d discover the truth—was both heart-fluttering and deeply satisfying.
The chemistry between them is electric, and the emotional journey had me hooked. Lucian is charming and infuriating in that perfect rake way. Rosalie is strong, clever, and determined, but she also can’t ignore the pull of the man she once loved.
As Rosalie uncovered what had truly happened two years ago, each piece of the puzzle fell perfectly into place. When the truth finally emerged, it was romantic and deeply heartfelt, leaving me grinning from ear to ear.
I also loved the little touches, like Rosalie’s father calling her “Rosie Roo” and how deeply he wanted her happiness. It added an extra touch of warmth to the entire story.
Courtney McCaskill has delivered a story that was pure delight to read, leaving me eagerly anticipating the next installment in what has quickly become one of my favorite series of all time!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. I found the plot unique and engaging. The characters were wonderful. And the love story is swoon-worthy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked it so much, I wish it had lasted longer.
Two years ago, Rosie had an intimate encounter with Lucian. When they were caught, he suggested they marry. He promised to see her father the next morning. But days passed, and Rosalie heard nothing. When she finally saw him again, he told her she was silly to have believed him when he said they'd marry, and her heart was broken. Then he disappeared, traveling the continent. Rosie has continued to carry a torch for him, while insisting she hates him.
So when Lysander, Lucian’s cousin, the current Lord Valentine, approaches her father to suggest marriage, she agrees. She has survived six seasons and decided that she will never find a love match (because she's still hung up on Lucian).
Rosalie’s father is a Duke who dotes on her. He won't let just anyone marry her. He insists they must get to know one another first. And he draws up papers, which Lysander refuses to sign, ensuring an estate that has been passed on for generations will remain hers to pass on to her daughter. It also guarantees that she can always come home to live with her family if the marriage becomes unpleasant.
As it turns out, Lysander’s petulance about the betrothal papers works out to Lucian's advantage. Since the name on the papers only says Lord Valentine, he steps in to take Lysander’s place. But Rosie is having no part of it. She decides to prove that Lucian's past behaviors indicate he's not trustworthy or worthy of her hand. Strangely, the more she investigates, the more convinced she becomes that Lysander was actually the bad guy, not Lucian.
Everything Lucian does is intended to make up for breaking her heart two years ago, but he doesn't want to tell her exactly why because it involved someone she loves. When she finally uncovers why he did it, not only does Rosie forgive him, but she also makes him promise to never lie to her again. It's the best kind of HEA.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
Are we never going to find out who the Belle is??? This may drive me crazy as through the first year of the Brazen Belle, there were hints that she would be revealed and I was so disappointed when that was not the case. But now I am getting the feeling that the Belle will be like Mrs. Dove-Lyon in the Lyon's Den world.
The newest rake featured in the February review is Lucien Deverell, the newly minted Viscount Valentine, after it was discovered that his cousin, Lysander, was not the legal heir due to the sins of his father. His return not only disrupts his cousin's life, but also that of Lady Rosalie, who was recently contracted in a betrothal to Lysander, the prior Viscount Valentine. Not only does she face public embarassment as all this comes to light on the eve of her supposed betrothal ball, but she and Lucien have a past as well, before he breaks her heart and escapes to the Continent for several years of gossip-worthy licentiousness.
But not only has Lucien returned to claim the title that has been proven to belong to him rightfully, but also to reclaim his past, including Lady Rosalie. To her great consternation, Rosalie finds herself betrothed to the new Lord Valentine. But, because of the horrible way he broke things off with her in the past, the path to redemption is not easy. Rosalie seeks to break off, and seeks the truth to rumours of his behavious which may provide her with the path to her freedom. She does discover the truth and it is not as she expected, but is the path to her future happiness and a resolution to the hurts of the past.
Sweet and spicy story where there is love at first sight, and heartbreak, but a second chance. Lucien is proven to be a hero who played and been painted as the villain in the past, but has returned to prove himself and his love to Rosalie, but she must discover this for herself. A lovely and enjoyable story, and fun addition to the rake review calendar.
Lucian Deverill, the True Viscount Valentine, and a rake with quiet confidence, a bruised heart, and a steadfast love he never managed to shake. He’s charming, infuriating, and impossible not to root for as he fights, gently, stubbornly, and with that delicious Deverill swagger, for the woman he lost.
Lady Rosalie de Lacy, the daughter of the Duke of Swanscombe; she is smart, determined and beautifully self-possessed. She's ready to choose her own future......until scandal, duty and one very inconveniently, irresistible man upends everything. Her journey from heartbreak to clarity is deeply satisfying.
Rosalie’s engagement ball is moments away when the Brazen Belle drops a bombshell; her fiancé is no longer Viscount Valentine. The title now belongs to Lucian Deverill, the only man she ever loved, and the one who vanished two years ago without explanation. Her father insists the marriage will go forward… only now with Lucian. What follows is a deliciously tense, emotionally layered second‑chance romance. Lucian’s mistakes still sting, but his devotion never wavered. Rosalie’s resolve is iron‑strong, yet the pull between them is undeniable. As she uncovers the truth behind his disappearance, every revelation clicks into place with perfect emotional payoff. Their chemistry crackles, their banter sparkles, and their slow‑rebuilding trust is the kind of romance arc that leaves you grinning like a fool.
Courtney McCaskill delivers a story bursting with humor, heat, and heart. Rosalie and Lucian’s journey is electric from start to finish - a blend of sizzling chemistry, emotional honesty, and pitch‑perfect writing. The little touches (Rosie Roo!) add warmth that lingers long after the final page. A thoroughly delightful read that proves second chances can be even sweeter the second time around. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the second book in the multi-author series The Rake Review, Season Two, and it’s a wonderfully swoon-worthy second-chance romance that follows Lucian Deverell and Lady Rosalie de Lacy. Lucian broke Rosalie’s heart two years ago when he professed his feelings and then swiftly left the continent. The pair shares a past full of misunderstandings and hurt feelings, which resurface as Lucian, now a viscount, returns to London to win Rosalie back.
Rosalie is smart, stubborn, and not remotely interested in making things easy for Lucian. She refuses to ignore what he did to her two years ago, even though she is still affected by his presence, and there are definitely unresolved feelings between them. She determines to prove to her father that she can’t marry Lucian by finding proof of his misdeeds. Lucian is a fantastic MMC, and I loved watching him prove himself to Rosalie. He has a lot to explain and make up for, and I love that he does it through his actions rather than with empty promises. Lucian’s confidence, devotion, and eagerness to earn her trust paired so well with Rosalie’s strength and skepticism, and the banter between them is as strong as their chemistry!
The February book for The Rake Review: Season Two series, this was a romantic and fun story, filled with chemistry and memorable characters, and the love story is positively swoon-worthy. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next month’s bachelor!
I thoroughly enjoyed this new installment of the series. This enemies to lovers and second chance romance is very well written, has a good pace and offers funny moments, a touch of intrigue, a few twists and spicy love scenes. Lucian and Rosalie are appealing characters. He is a charming rake with hidden depths, and she is a strong, direct, matter-of-fact heroine who is on the verge of spinsterhood. Their hostility, undeniable tension and sizzling chemistry between them were palpable from the start. I enjoyed their verbal sparring and banter and was delighted to see familiar characters from the previous season return.
Not wanting to end up as a spinster and laughing stock of society, Lady Rosalie de Lacy accepts the marriage proposal of the angelic Lysander Deverell, Viscount Valentine, only to learn on the day of her engagement ball from the Rake Review that Lysander's title has fallen to his rakish cousin Lucian due to a scandal involving his father. Lucian is the man who broke her heart two years ago and whom her father has now accepted as her new fiancé. Unable to get out of the marriage contract due to its terms, Rosalie must now find leverage against Lucian without losing her heart to him again…
All in all, a very entertaining and spicy addition to the series that fans of reformed rakes, Brazen Belle and Courtney McCaskill will love!
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
I always enjoy a second chance at love and this one was a lovely example of this trope. Lucian Deverell messed up with Lady Rosalie de Lacy, after giving her the impression he was going to marry her and then leaving for the continent and breaking her heart. Now he’s back after two years, with a new title, ready to marry her in place of his cousin, who was found to be illegitimate and lost the title to Lucian. He’s now the Viscount Valentine and determined to win Rosalie back, whatever it may take. She’s definitely not ready to forgive Lucian and is set on convincing her father that she cannot marry him, just as soon as she finds the proof she needs of his ill treatment of his grandfather. It was fun watching her slowly thaw to his charm, as he shows her how much he cares and she learns more about his character. As the true story starts to emerge, she finds that she just can’t resist the one man who makes her heart race. I loved the chemistry between this couple, and I’m happy everything worked out as it should.
We have a relationship that should not have been then should have been sooner than two years later! Lady Rosie de Lacy a Dukes daughter knows a scoundrel when she sees one! Lucien Deverell has recently lost his grandfather Viscount Valentine and now he meets the woman he knows he will never forget but his life is complicated! He drives Rosalie away after secret meetings and the almost complete compromise of her virtue! He disappears from her life for almost two years! In the meantime his cousin Lysander Deverell, the new Viscount Valentine has asked for her hand in marriage! Rosalie despairs of ever wedding and becoming a mother so says yes! But through a honest mixup fate laughs at Rosalie agar and she had already signed the marriage contract when a different Viscount Valentine is revealed! Now she’s engaged to the one man she loathes who broke her heart! Let the games begin Lucien has two weeks to change her mind one steamy encounter at a time! Bravo hilarious and emotional! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!
Lucian Deverell & Lady Rosalie de Lacy shared a kiss & she expected him to speak to her father but h disappeared & has spent the last two years on the Continent but now he’s back just as Rosalie was about to be betrothed to his cousin. A Deverell family scandal surfaces & Lucien becomes Viscount Valentine. Lucien asks Rosalie’s father, the Duke of Swanscombe for her hand in marriage & he agrees. This was one delicious romance, Lucien has been portrayed as the black hearted rake but as we grew to know & love him we learned the truth. Rosalie was heart broken when Lucien left & she’s determined to learn the truth but the more she uncovers the more perplexed she becomes & gradually realises that appearances can be deceptive. I loved both Lucien & Rosalie, he’s just toe curlingly gorgeous & never wavers from his feelings, she is outspoken & intelligent. Their chemistry sizzle, their banter is wonderful. A very well written engrossing second chance romance. I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
The second installment of season two was a real treat!
Instead of sitting on the sidelines for another season, Rosalie accepts the marriage proposal of Lysander, Viscount Valentine. It's not a love match.
After a couple years apart, Lucian, returns into her life, this time as The Viscount Valentine. How could the cousin be switched for the latest rake featured by the Brazen Belle? Legitimacy of the heir and parentage. Lucien was born to the first and true wife, while Lysander was the second male born to the second wife.
Rosalie went from one Viscount Valentine to the next, but her heart can't readily accept the true heir, not after he deceived her love over a mere bet two years ago. Over the course of the story they come to realize they still have true feelings for each other, despite the forced separation, and uncover the truth behind the lies. An HEA for them both!
Two years ago Lucian and Rosalie shared a kiss in the garden at a ball. She thought he was going to talk to her father, but he made a joke of it, disappeared, and spent the next two years on the Continent. At the same time she is to become betrothed to his cousin, a scandal in the Deverell family brings him back to England as the new Viscount Valentine. Suddenly, she is engaged to Lord Valentine, but not the man she was expecting. Lucian has his work cut out for him. He has to battle all that is said about him in The Rake Review and convince Rosalie that he is sorry for his past behavior towards her. Rosalie, who is smart and quite outspoken, sets out to prove he is an unrepentant rake. As she digs deeper, she learns the truth; things may not be as she thought. This is a wonderful second chance story. Their banter is snarky, the chemistry between Lucian and Rosalie is undeniable, and their story has a happy ending. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I swear you can’t go wrong with The Rake Review and it’s authors! The second book in The Rake Review, Season 2 is another slam dunk!
Lucian Deverell is the latest target of the Brazen Belle’s exposé column, The Rake Review. After philandering abroad for two years, he’s summoned back to England when it’s revealed that he is the rightful Viscount Valentine. Claiming the title isn’t all he comes back for though!
I absolutely loved Lucian and Lady Rosalie together. I loved how Rosalie stood her ground against Lucian, and I loved how devilishly charming Lucian was. The flashbacks to when Lucian and Rosalie first met were so cute, and so hot!! I loved watching their story develop and evolve over the course of the book.
I loved the nods to former rakes that the Brazen Belle has featured in her column, Evander Beauclerk from One Fine May (Courtney McCaskill’s novel in the first season of The Rake Review) and also Alexander Blackwood, the Duke of Tyrone, from Mad Duke March by Sadie Bosque.
If you enjoy historical/regency romance, enemies-to-lovers, arranged marriage, and spicy romance, you need to read this book!
Thank you Courtney McCaskill for the advanced copy!
I am so in love with Lucien! He may be a rake to the nth degree, but his heart for Rosalie was so very delicious! I could feel his charm exude off the pages. Rosalie is such a tart little thing and I love watching strong women get their HEA. The only way to turn this beautiful love story that I would have given 10 stars to was to turn it into a crass language mess. The f-bomb is SO VERY UNNECESSARY and destroys the story for me- thus the 4 stars. (Wonderful stories have been written without it and I know it can be done again)It was heartbreaking to watch them suffer for the 2 years they were parted and a joy to see Rosalie investigate the truth. Truly a wonderful tale wrapping Valentine’s with a big, lovely bow!
I received this story for free and these are my own views.
Lucian aka the real Viscount Valentine is back from the continent and he is determined to get his girl back despite the fact he shattered her heart into a million pieces and the fact that she hates him for what he did to her but he is a rake and he is charming after all..
Rosalie is the apple of her father's eye and she wants nothing more than to quit being the laughingstock of the ton after being on the marriage mart for over 2-3 years and for pinning for the man who broke her heart and shattered her dreams.. so she will marry a man for convenience..
However when scandal breaks and the true identity of the man she's engaged to comes out on the day of the ball for her betrothal, scandal breaks.. but not really because the real Valentine is man she loves and he loves her..
Question is can they get past the hurt and the misunderstanding to finally be together or will this be the worst thing they've ever done?
This story is filled with laughter, love, angst, banter and happily ever..
I can't wait to see what else is in store from not only Courtney McCaskill but The Brazen Belle.
Wow!! I loved Lucian and Rosalie’s love story and how they got their HEA!! If you enjoy a book with lots of entertainment, so much fun to read and full of witty banter then this book is for you!! I instantly liked both Lucian and Rosalie’s characters and loved the interaction between them. The chemistry between them was fabulous. I loved how Lucian showed back up in Rosalie’s life and how she was determined not to believe him after the lies he had told her. Rosalie’s family really added to the entertainment of the story without being a distraction. It was well written and flowed without dragging. I highly recommend this book!!
I really loved this second installment of the Brazen Belle saga! It was so very funny and emotional and slightly angsty as well, the very perfect mix! I found particularly intriguing that even with the dual POV we don’t know what Lucian really thought about Rosalie and why he behaved like that with her until almost the end of the story, and it was perfect!!! A little mystery around what happened in the past heightened the intrigue. Gorgeously written, the characters were vivid and adorable. A veritable five star read!
I loved this romantic story. The main characters, Rosalie and Lucian, are adorable. Lucian is a charming hero with a rake-like reputation. Rosalie is a headstrong, frank heroine. I found their reunion after two years apart and an unexplained breakup very entertaining. The couple’s interactions are both tense and funny, with misunderstandings and, of course, filled with beautiful chemistry. I absolutely loved this second-chance trope.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Lady Rosalie de Lacy is tired of waiting for the one that got away, and is getting engaged to Lysander Deverell, Lord Valentine. But at the engagement ball, the missing Lucian Deverell appears and he claims to be Lord Valentine. Wonderful second chance romance as Rosalie makes Lucian work for her trust and love this time around. With engaging characters, lots of drama and emotion, and a bit of humor, this is an entertaining romance and good addition to the series! I received a free copy from the author, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
A rake who is reformed after just one evening spent in the arms of the woman he never thought he'd find. Only to screw it up beyond saving a few days later. MEN! However, watching Lucien fight to make amends and watching Rosalie struggle with what she knows versus what she uncovers while giving into his pleasures was so entertaining. The only thing that was left unresolved for me was what ever happened with Lysander and where did he end up?
I received a free copy of this story and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Lord Valentine’s Rotten February, by Courtney McCaskill and part of the Rake Review Season 2 is a sweet treat of a second chance romance! Lucian broke Rosalie’s heart when they first met, but there’s more to the story, and the author tells it so well. The chemistry between Rosalie and Lucian ignites the page, and the secondary characters including Rosalie’s father, the Duke, and her brother Robin and Mrs Beauclerk, all play an important part in the story and make it special.
This second book in The Rake Review, Season Two series was a very captivating and well written enemies to lovers historical romance. A misunderstanding, betrayal, a nefarious cousin, misinformation, lies, emotional issues, and confusing twists were very entertaining. I really enjoyed how a strong undeniable chemistry led to a beautiful second chance steamy heartwarming forever love. I highly recommend reading!
I devoured Lucian and Rosalie’s HEA and loved every single page! 💕🔥 Courtney delivered once again an engaging, laugh-out-loud funny, and seriously steamy story. Lucian is rake perfection, Rosalie is everything, and together their chemistry is completely off the charts. I couldn’t get enough of them! If you’re looking for your February rake, look no further—this one will steal your heart and leave you swooning. Highly recommend!
If you love second chance romance, miscommunication, friends to enemies to lovers, and a hero groveling this is a great book. Lucien and Rosalie are a great couple. I enjoyed seeing Rosalie make Lucien work for her love and learning what happened in their past. This is a romantic Valentine's Day book to read.
I enjoy reading the Rake Review books. This one I absolutely loved. The first little bit was kind of slow. When it picked up, I didn’t want to put the book down. I pretty quickly figured out that we didn’t know the whole story from two years ago and it played out just as I suspected it would. Well written with wonderful characters and good steam.
Loved reading Lucian and Rosalie's story of misunderstandings and second chances. Both loved each other, split by misunderstandings, miscommunication and circumstances only to reunite years later when fate strips his cousin of his title and bestows it upon him. Can he finally gain the hand of the woman he loves and will she ever forgive him.
This is an exceedingly wonderful read. The witty exchanges and wonderful main characters had me so engrossed, the next thing I knew, I was at the end of the book! Love the Rake Review series. Glad there is a Season 2!
I received an ARC of this book and leaving my review voluntarily.
