Valor Ridge #3

Embracing His Scars

Rate this book
He’s built walls out of scars… but she slipped through.

Anson Sutter came to Valor Ridge to disappear. The former Navy EOD tech spends his days shoeing horses, tending his skittish wolfhound, Bramble, and pretending his burn scars stop at the surface.

They don’t.

Every scar became another brick in the walls he lives behind, and only one person has ever breached them–Maggie, his pen pal. He built his new life around the hope she sent him, falling for her one letter at a time, knowing he’d never deserve to meet her in person. Men like him don’t get happy endings. And women like Maggie don’t fall for ex-cons hiding at a ranch for broken veterans.

She builds sanctuaries for others… but now she needs one herself.

Magnolia “Maggie” Rowe restores broken places for a living, her DIY show making her a reluctant celebrity. But fame comes with a a stalker who’s turned obsession into something vicious. And when he proves he can reach her anywhere, she runs to the man she trusts Anson.

But the man she finds in Montana is nothing like the gentle voice from her letters. He’s guarded and gruff, already retreating behind the scars he thinks define him. And her arrival may have drawn her stalker straight to Valor Ridge, threatening the quiet life Anson has barely begun to reclaim.

Can a love built on paper survive a threat written in blood?

To protect her, Anson will have to face the fire again.

To love her, he’ll have to embrace the scars he’s spent years hiding.

Embracing His Scars continues the emotional journey of the Valor Ridge series with a slow-burn, pen-pal-to-lovers romance. If you crave scarred protector heroes, brave heroines who refuse to break, and a found family that stands between danger and their own, this story will hold you captive from the first page to the last.

Ah, Anson and Maggie. Their push-pull was fun and frustrating to write. I may or may not have yelled at Anson a few times to get his head out of his ass. He just couldn't get out of his own way. But once he finally did... 😏

I think they might just be my favorite couple I've written so far.

I’m not really liking the MMC. I understand his whole past, but the way he treats the FMC after she’s traveled kilometers to meet him, only for him to reject her… nope, not nice at all. I might pick this up again later, but for now it’s a DNFed!

I've never been more impatient as one of Tonya's ARC team to get my hands on a book, I've read and saved each letter she posted between Anson and Maggie, all 45 of them. I've checked my inbox a million times to see if it had arrived and when it finally did I couldn't start reading fast enough. I devoured the whole thing in two days and I'm still sitting here with tears in my eyes and a full heart. Man, this book was a masterpiece!!!

Anson, former Navy EOD literally went through fire, carries the burns of the mistakes he made, the punishment he got for them. It made him retreat in himself, keeping his head down and only finding solace in his work as a farrier at Valor Ridge and the company of his dog Bramble. A light in his darkness are the letters he started writing when still in prison to Maggie, a wonderful woman who read between the lines and saw a man worth fighting for. A woman he fell in love with word by word...

Maggie's a known TV star, she's got a show building and renovating anything you can think of. For quite some time however she's had a stalker and things have gotten so severe that she decides to come to Valor Ridge and meet Anson who's always made her feel safe, seen and who believed in her. A man she fell in love with one letter at a time...

Meeting each other isn't really going as they thought however, instead of the kind, sweet man that talked about everything in his letters, she finds someone who can't look her in the eye and pushes her away whenever she gets too close. The harder she shows him how much she wants him, the more anxious Anson gets, thinking he's not worthy of her love. Finding out her stalker seems to have followed her, still trying to destroy her life, starts to change things. With a little help from his friends living with him at Valor Ridge he finally opens up, begins to realise that Maggie loves him as he is, scars and all. I loved, loved the scene with the Kinsugi!!!

There were times I wanted to shake Anson, scream at him to open his eyes and see how much Maggie loved him. But oh when he does, when they finally get together it was the best feeling. So emotional! Of course there was the rest of the crew, silent and brooding but also lots of banter. Ready to help, having each others backs and fighting for their brother. I can't think of anything I didn't like about this book and while this for me is the best of the series so far, I can't wait for Bear's story who'll be up next. I'm sure he'll have his hands full with Greta.

Absolute love--and worth the wait! (Not that I didn't love Walker and Jo's story--I did! But the final scenes at the end of each book that tease the next one are BRUTAL, and having a different book come out before this one made me almost unbearably anxious for what was chasing Maggie...)

Anson and Maggie's story was a hard read, at times--they had a six year slow burn(!) going on, and the Anson of his letters seemed like a totally different guy than Anson IRL so much of the time and Maggie didn't know what to do about it. He really needed to get his head out of his posterior, and good grief did he take his own sweet time doing it. Bramble of course was the bestest boy ever, taking messages back and forth like and champ and using the power of tiny, helpless kittens to bring his people together.

Yes--dogs and cats this time around (not for the first time, but they do play a bigger role than in Nessie and Jax's book)--plus the horses, of course. No complaints here! :)

I absolutely love how the guys (and women, now) of Valor Ridge constantly show up for each other, offering both unflinching support and swift kicks in the butt as needed. We get some #couplegoals updates here which will have me smiling for days, so as usual I will say that this one *could* stand on its own but really works better if you've read them all in order and can appreciate everything that is going on with the side characters as well as our MCs.

And of course Ms Burrows leaves us with a heck of a cliffhanger for the next book--Bear's--which I need to read yesterday, please! ;)

There was so much going on in this one. I really liked that Anson and Maggie got to know each other through letters for years, how that was their safe space. Loved it more that despite them not really knowing each other, when Maggie needed help, Anson told her to come to Valor Ridge and she did.

I won't lie, it was painful watching them get to know each other in person. Both of them had to get past the "curated" person from the letters to the real person. That was easier for Maggie than Anson. Anson was mired down in what he did and guilt, he couldn't see why anyone, but especially Maggie would want to know him, let alone more.

I thought Maggie came up with a great idea for Anson getting past that, one he would understand. That really seemed to do the job and things changed for them. Up to this point it was interesting to see everyone else at Valor Ridge give Maggie advice about Anson and how she needed to see him. It helped her see what his issues were.

Things got really crazy towards the end. It was great that the threat against Maggie was taken care of, but learned what the threat was seemed to blow everyone's minds.

The ending to this one was perfect for this couple!

So far this series has taken my heart and put it in a blender, and this book is no exception. It’s so emotional, beautiful, and truly healing. I loved every moment of Anson and Maggie’s story even the really hard ones. Six years of writing letters and falling in love with each other did not translate as expected when they first meet in person. It was awkward and painful and had me wondering if they could actually get past it all and realize they were the same people who wrote all those letters.
Anson and Maggie’s journey to their HEA is at times a rough one but it is riddled with so many sweet and tender moments to help us get through the more difficult things happening around them and to them. Anson and his sweet dog Bramble want nothing more than to protect Maggie at all costs. And they do!
As always the other men at Valor Ridge add so much to the interactions and situations in the story.
I loved so many moments throughout this book, but especially the kittens, the Kintsugi scene, and the ending.
Another amazing installment in this unforgettable series! I absolutely loved it! I can’t wait for Bear’s book next!

Moving past fear

My goodness gracious. This book had me up all night - First... Embracing His Scars by Tonya Burrows is truly a heartfelt, slow-burn romance. There is healing and learning to love beyond visible and invisible wounds.
Former Navy EOD tech Anson Sutter has retreated to Valor Ridge, hiding behind both his burn scars and emotional walls.
All while Magnolia “Maggie” Rowe arrives seeking safety from a dangerous past. What began as a tender pen-pal connection deepens into a powerful, in-person bond that challenges them both to confront fear, vulnerability, and trust. I read some of the letters back and forth and had to dive right in because I NEEDED to know their story. I was not disappointed.
There are themes of:
•Resilience
•Found family
•Acceptance
Burrows crafts a story that proves scars don’t define worth and that love can be the bravest step toward healing. Although a bigger fan of the spice (🌶) I find this was more closed door for me, and I still throughly enjoyed the heat, yearning, and tension from the two.

LOVE it! It was so moving, Anson is anxious to meet his penpal so anxious that he doesn't know what to say^^ thankfully Bramble is there to acty as a messenger and a determined one so moving.....i loved how protective of the kitten he is, like Anson, big and intimidating outside and soft tender heart inside.

Maggie is terrified and ready to let fame behind for her security.....in fact it's only thanks to Anson's letter that she is feeling strong enough even is others say she is crazy. When danger seems worse she flew to Montana and Anson expecting the man from the letter she is disturbed to see him run...but slowly she is learning of the little attention, the way she is already part of the family and how Anson is worth fighting for not matter the guilt he is carrying.

So many twists and moving moments, some really steamy as well and humour thanks to Rivers......great investigation it's my favourite book in the series i really just want more

I have read all of the books in the Valor Ridge series. When I first started it, I thought back to an early Christmas schedule and oft repeated in other stories, o the land of the broken toys. This was Walker's early dream to have a refuge so the men who felt that they are broken have lost everything can heal. This is very true in Anson's story. Over 6 years he has formed a friendship with a pen pal, Maggie. Through their letters they have discovered a bond of trust. Now Maggie has a stalker and no where to go for safety, except Valor Ridge. Because of Anson's letters she knows who everyone is and how much they mean to each other. This is probably my favorite in the series so far. I look forward to all of their stories in the future, as each journey is a rewarding adventure for the reader.

I received an ARC copy and opinions are my own.

This book had all the feels! I was excited to read this after seeing the buildup between Maggie and Anson, via the letters exchanged while he was in prison.

She was escaping. He didn't know how to be a safe place. Watching Maggie and Anson navigate everything going on around them, while trying to find their way together, it was simply amazing.

Having the letters continue through the book was a touch I wasn't expecting, but it made it so much better. Using Kintsugi in this book as well, I thought it amplified how well Maggie was suited for Anson.

As always, the dogs were an integral part, with the addition of some new animals!

I finished this book and wanted to reread it right away. Chemistry, laughter, sadness, suspense, this book delivers it all.

Every single book in this series is SO good! Anson and Maggie's story stays true to form for this series with another powerful and emotional story. Anson and Maggie have been friends for years, but have never met. When Maggie comes to Valor Ridge, everything seems to change making Maggie second guess her decision. Can Anson overcome his hesitancy to let others in? Or will Maggie feel she needs to move on, and lose the only person who has ever helped her to feel safe? A beautiful story of healing and love's power. And the dogs add so much character to the stories in this series and this story has dogs AND kittens! I absolutely loved this story. Every book in this series has been a true pleasure to read.

After the second book, I was ready to call it quits on this series. Between how much I loathe the sheriff and the heavy subject matter of trafficked women and children, I figured this series just wasn’t for me. That said, my interest was piqued with the letter/prologue at the end of the second book and only increased with each letter leading up to this book. It was easily the best of the three if for no other reason than the fact that the sheriff isn’t in this story at all. Add in the relationship and chemistry between Maggie and Anson and the other characters and this made for an enjoyable read. Some of the ‘whodunit’ was a bit predictable, but not enough to detract from the book in any way.

I don’t know that I’ll continue with the series, but this was worth the read.

Embracing His Scars by Tonya Burrows is the third book in the Valor Ridge series.

Anson Sutter has a lot of scars. Emotional and physical. And he doesn’t believe anyone can look beyond them. But he has one friend. And he thinks that’s enough. Until his friend Maggie arrives at Valor ridge, needing to be safe.

This is a beautiful standalone journey of trust and healing and learning to love. And choosing life. Found family and brotherhood and canine companions that are adorable and just what is needed. This story has another adorable animals as well, it is a ranch, but I won’t spoil anything.

The reader is treated to a buffet of love, healing, suspense, action, truth bombs, friends that are family and so much more. Mind blown.

Embracing his scars rips your heart out as you watch Anson struggle with his words and his sense of worth. You want to hug him—and shake him—at the same time as he keeps his walls firmly in place. Maggie charges forward with pure grit, fiercely pursuing the future she wants while fighting to survive real evil. The story is packed with strength, sharp banter, unwavering loyalty, and unconditional love that binds this group of men and women together. Bramble shines brightest of all, especially when danger strikes. This crew battles threats both physical and emotional, holding you captive with bated breath and desperate for what comes next.

I read every note the author posted between Anson and Maggie on Facebook. I anticipated this book more than any book I’ve read recently. I love how the letters built the suspense with each posting. This book is the third book in the Valor Ridge series. I love this series!! Each character is broken in some way and just trying to stay afloat, Tonya Burrows does such a good job in transforming them. There are so many quotes I underlined in this book. The transformation that takes place in this book is absolutely beautiful. I loved the characters and loved how the Valor Ridge family is growing and strengthening with those bonds. I am usually very good at figuring out endings but this one surprised me.

Another brilliant addition to the series! What a brilliant book I couldn’t put this down!

What I’m loving the most about this series as it goes on is the continued relationship between this wonderful found family. It’s beautiful watching it unfold and seeing how all the guys are there for each other.

The main story between Anson and Maggie was so lovely. I loved how Maggie with some advice from Anson’s friends, really fought for him to understand he was worthy of her and love.

The story had all you could want, live, heat and suspense with a twist I didn’t see coming! Overall just brilliant and I can’t wait for Bear’s story next.

Was waiting for Anson and Maggies story. Anson our scarred ex mlitary, ex-con. His pen pal Maggie who we learn about in this story and Bramble Anson's wolfhound. Loved them all and watching them both grow was a win. This was a twisty tale that threw out some surprises and let us bask in the family of Valor Ridge. This was an advanced copy I received from the author and freely share my own thoughts and opinions. As frustrated with Anson as one becomes, I can understand. It is like communicating on a computer with someone you do not know, being able to say what you want, to think and rethink, to back track and type over. #EmbracingHisScars #ValorRidge #TonyaBurrows

This is a beautifully written love story with plenty of suspense thrown in. The writer had me engaged from beginning to end. It is an amazing journey of restoration and forgiveness. I loved Anson and Maggie. These two flawed individuals finally meet after being penpals for several years. The first meet did not go as planned; however with help from the guys at Valor Ridge, Maggie helps Anson see the beauty in his brokenness. Anson helps Maggie with her stalker problem. Through it all they find their HEA. Every book in the Valor Ridge Series is fantastic and well worth the read.

Anson and Maggie have been pen pals for 6 years and Maggie has decided to go to Valor Ridge to find Anson where she feels being with Anson is safe. Maggie comes with a stalker and meeting Anson for the first time doesn't go as planned. Anson can't get out of his head that anyone would want him with his past and scars. Maggie charges ahead to try and bring Anson around. There's danger, emotions and Bramble who knows what's good for Anson and pushes him to Maggie and when danger strikes Bramble is there to help Maggie and what a great twist that Tonya threw in there.

Absolutely loved Anson & Maggie!!! Anson’s scarred and broken, and so hesitant to actually meet the woman he’s been pen pals with for years. Maggie came to him because he’s the only person who made her feel safe. Finally meeting face-to-face? Oof it was rough. But I loved the way Anson kept showing up in the ways he knew how, and I loved Maggie’s determination. And can we talk about Bramble? Because he’s the bestest boy, and I love that dog!!! The twists in this one had my jaw on the ground, and I ate it up. Absolutely loved this one, and cannot wait for more!!

Anson and Maggie had me in a letter-writing chokehold before I even got my hands on this book. Their six-year pen pal romance was angsty, authentic, and completely captivating. And their love story? Just as incredible.

This was a beautifully done slow burn featuring a scarred hero who needs a little help from our FMC to step out of his protective shell and realize he’s worthy of love. The plot twists, the suspense — all of it was so well executed.

Hands down one of my favorite @authortonyaburrows books to date! 📚✨

Thoroughly enjoyed

The letters between Anson and Maggie had me totally hooked before the book was even published. I was a bit thrown then when Maggie’s career was mentioned so I totally understood why that threw Anson for a loop. The story was well paced with unexpected turns and great character development. But what keeps me fully invested is the overall family and caring at Valor Ridge. Love how they all pull for each other but also irritate each other. It feels real to me. Looking forward to Bear’s story.

I am absolutely invested in this series! While each book can be read as a stand-alone, I would read them all to get to know the characters better. They are worth getting to know. Anson and Maggie definitely have some hurdles to get over but together and with the support of the Valor Ridge family anything is possible. I was sort of surprised by the twist that was thrown in there. Of course, I fell in love with Bramble and the kittens. There were lots of emotions too.

Couldn’t put it down!

This book was a beautiful masterpiece to read! The complexity of the characters, the layers, the plot twists and turns…I could not put it down!

And Bramble! I loved all of the animals and their fun inclusion into the story.

The inclusion of art in the healing process was beautiful and that scene between Maggie & Anson brought tears to my eyes.

This series continues to deliver and I can’t wait for the next book!
