Nameless has snatched victory from the constant threat of death in the Arenas, but still doesn't control his freedom. To survive and continue his personal war, he has accepted the position granted by his Arena victory, aiming to leverage his first Silk to build the power base necessary to achieve his goals. Yet fate is not through wreaking havoc and once again he is forced to leave his familiar world.

When the stakes become higher than he ever imagined it would, Nameless has to forsake the Realm he knows to find the core of his new fighting stable. Traveling through a world opposite to what he knows, even the oaths he gave his goddess and himself are tested. Will these obligations protect/shield him from the lure of hope and gentleness enough and will he preserve the culture he finds fault with?

Born in Houston, K. Caffee has a long history of spinning captivating tales for a wide range of interested people. One of her earliest memories is being lost in a huddle of adults as a kindergartener on her way to a church choir camp. Whatever she tale she had been telling was captivating enough the entire group missed a rest stop, and the bus driver proved to be very patient when the 20 or so adults all requested an emergency stop about an hour after the scheduled one.
After several years of running various role play campaigns, K. Caffee thought her story telling days were done. She entered the work force, then school, but the stories were not done with her. The Followers of Torments saga ambushed her in 2014 with the ultimatum “write.. or don’t sleep.” As you can tell, despite a valiant effort to focus solely on school, K. Caffee lost the fight. And, now, despite still carrying an overloaded graduate schedule, she continues to write and more of the pukah who gave her the ultimatum in the first place are lining up at the mental doors demanding to be let in.
What free time she can pry out of the hands of her story and her school work she devotes to her two furry, feline owners, human family, and discovering new friends on Facebook, Twitter, or keeping up with documenting the various non-story thoughts she gets on her blog.

Starting off where Out of the Darkness ends, Remember the Shadows continues with the same fast paced action, but with a whole new dynamic. As Nameless begins to comprehend more of the world around him, we too have a better understanding of the hierarchy of this world, though there is still much that remains mysterious.
For me, this book was even better than the last because we move away from the arena (somewhat) and begin to delve into the political intrigue and the power plays of the arenas and their matrons. Also, for those who were jarred by the lack of dialog, fear not. Nameless manages to hold many conversations throughout the book and some even sound as if he has a better grasp of language (though I personally think the syntax issues are a stroke of brilliance).
The end sets up nicely for the next leg of the adventure. Like the last book, the action is drawn to a close, but we are left with a small tease of what is to come. I just hope it comes soon.

Upon the start of the book I was sent into a tail spin following the unique formatting of the author, fighting between whether to give up on the story entirely or continue reading to see if I could find a rhythm to the words. Quickly I found myself being weaved into the words and becoming so entangled that I didn't want to put the book down. It became a strange, almost magical, experience.

I became drawn to "Nameless", yes that is truly what he is called for he has no name, by the third chapter. The passion behind his actions and the intensity by which he commands respect makes him a very likable character, not to mention the simple fact that he is selfless. A man of honor only wanting to do right by Her, the Mother. The reader experiences life through his eyes and the eyes of those around him, seeing things in a truly different light more unique than the tradition world.

This story is not written for the menial reader looking for a quick read, instead it is written in a way akin to a gladiator training for his arena debut. The syntax is one that jabs the reader into submission until they learn to parlay properly and learn the rhythm required to smoothly take on the story that is. Once this has been established the reader is in for a real melee of adventure. If you are ready and willing to take a gamble and embark on an adventure then pick up Followers of Torment: Book of Shadows and begin reading.

From the beginning through the end the reader embarks on a journey with various treacheries along the way. With each obstacle that is overcome a token is added to the pouch of life and knowledge the reader comes away with at the end. A complex plot is weaved into the story and it is up to the reader to retain the proper knowledge to follow along, or be left lost in the darkness until they emerge from the dark tunnel at the end.

I fell in love with this series while reading the first book. I have never read a series so well done in 3rd person. The author masterfully weaves together a story that keeps giving you glimpses of a society so unbalanced that you wonder how it functions, but at the same time is so focused on the main character that you are not quite worried about the big picture. Just surviving is hard enough, and when you throw in the political problems it gets even harder. Luckily Nameless, yes he truly has no name, has people around him willing to help him make it. I am amazed at how even now Nameless has no desire to have things for himself. The only thing he cares about is his devotion to Her and improving Her status. After reading this book I still have questions, but for once that really doesn't trouble me because the story grew in such a way that it felt complete. There is no frustration for having unanswered questions just excitement at the idea of moving on to the next book and seeing where the story takes me.

I am quite enthralled by Nameless, the main character in this series. After reading Out of the Darkness, the first of the series, I was anxious the learn what he does after gaining his freedom. The author has done a superb job of detailing how a character who had only ever known slavery adjusts to freedom. Nameless is smart and learns quickly, though the ingrained habits of slavery are difficult to overcome. I feel his frustrations, his anger, his amusement, and confusion as he treads through a new life. Excellent plot and well worth the read if you enjoy a Romanesque gladiator theme with paranormal undertones. Five stars for such an enjoyable story with wonderful character development and plot line.

Worth revisiting this world

Rough stuff, non stop intrigue and action, I was pleasantly surprised (or pleasantly horrified) by this 2nd voyage into the darkness of the arenas and the blood sport realms artfully crafted by this amazing young writer

As Ascendant Champion, life should be easy. Elevation brings with it a certain wealth, fame and notoriety. But not for Nameless. For while he seeks to establish himself, he knows the true enemy will do all in their power to see him subjugated. Yes, everyone, it seems, wants a piece of Nameless. If not to control him outright, to see him destroyed, bankrupt or dead . . . or preferably all three!
As such, he sets in motion a series of events that will see him ascend yet again as a true champion of the people and the Web Mother & Children they worship.
And this time, he won’t be alone. He’ll be using his own silks – Jarlean and Akantheldama – in a scheme that will take decades to come to fruition . . . IF things go to plan.
It’s a big “if” – For once again, Nameless finds himself navigating a tangled web of lies and deceit as he weaves a counterplot of his own to ensure the corruption eating its way through the heart of the Realm is brought to an end.
I really enjoyed this sequel to “Out of the Darkness.” It’s not a story you can rush. Possessing a complex, gradually evolving storyline, you need to take your time to savor all its subtle nuances. But if you do, you’ll find yourself appreciating all the political intrigue and backbiting you can handle. And seeing as its woven into a plot that’s action packed and full of drama . . . well, what’s not to like?
Remember the Darkness: A subtle reminder that in life, all that glitters isn’t gold!
