After many days in his drifting canoe, twelve-year old, Eliam, lands on the island of Ganix and is welcomed by a fourteen-year-old, Vanko. In his camouflaged cabin near the beach, Vanko finds provision while hoping to discover where his nearly-blind mother had been taken. These two are led to a prison used for training guards. While being led by the light, Vanko and Eliam help Massa. a known troublemaker, escape. He joins their mission on the island.
Meanwhile one Aristocrat on the island of Ganix seeks to recapture his escaped prisoner, Massa, and Vanko, a missing worker. Word of these brave “heroes” spread as they moved about avoiding capture. A reward was offered spurring even more trackers to hunt tirelessly for them. With this increased danger, Eliam and his friends were forced to rely upon the mysterious archway provided by Chen to move around the island as needed.
Meanwhile, back in Kumani, the islanders successfully freed Jessah and others from the Revolutionist base where they had been held captive. However, in retaliation for this attack, the wife of a battle hero, Pacey, is abducted and used to demand weekly tribute from the Lowlanders. Jessah recalled seeing a map displaying the location of other bases. Now they just needed a plan of attack against the remaining bases while rescuing Pacey and other prisoners.
Tensions were rising on the island of Ganix as well. One of the Aristocrats, Ruel, had an encounter with Chen who confronted him regarding the truth about his connection with Eliam. His transformation was obvious to all around him. As a result, their plan to expose the devious purposes of the Aristocrats while freeing the commoners from slavery begins to unfold.
