The Masked Crows

Rate this book
Bacester is a city shrouded in mystery, where the distinction between hero and villain is thin. Each citizen possesses a unique ability, and in the shadows of lamp lit streets, the Masked Crows hunt down and kill those deemed “Noxious.”

Among the Crows is Bryn Dimes, a young and newly recruited member of this clandestine organization. He must navigate discovering his own abilities while facing unknown enemies and deadly vendettas.

Bryn’s journey through this gaslamp fantasy world is a riveting tale of power, intrigue, and self-discovery.

Oh boy this a dnf at 31%

This is quite honestly an extremely frustrating book to read. Bryn gets picked up by this secret society of crime fighters only for them to teach him absolutely nothing. Sure there are small moments of "this is how you use mana" but for the majority of what I have read so far its more, throw him into dangerous situations and see what happens, mind you he is like 15. He eventually get partnered up with another boy, who is 17, and has "slightly" more experience but for the most part is also left in the dark.

The magic system is based on mana, but it seems half baked but honestly that's probably due to the lack of actual effort put into explaining anything to the main character. He doesn't know how his mana works and struggles to use it, control it and maintain it, but no one will actually just sit down and explain it, a literal bunch of useless adults.

The character interactions leave a lot to be desired. For the most part every one seems to have an attitude for no reason. As stated earlier they recruit new kids but teach them nothing, almost as if they are purposely setting them up to fail. Bryn and Ebenezer have this half baked friends but enemies nonsense going on, their conversations feel stiff and unnatural. The others just come across crash and rude which becomes annoying really quickly.

The overall plot feels lost, at 31% its just the same situation over and over, go on a mission to kill a noxious, explain nothing to Bryn. Its repetitive and makes it uninteresting. I do not mind being left in the dark and waiting for information to unfold but you have to give me crumbs along the way to keep me interested, this instead is giving me nothing.

I wanted to get through this and had hopes of enjoying it but after 31% and coming across a chapter that was 44 minutes long, that still was not explaining anything and was having these boys recklessly "investigate" a serial killer, I decided this wasn't worth fighting through anymore.
