For twenty years, Lucien Ashfall has been caged by the very men who profit from his blood.

He’s dangerous, uncontrollable, and deadly.

He’s also the only one carrying his bloodline and they need another.

Every six months, thirty girls are sent into his prison and tasked with one goal: Make him create an heir by any means necessary.

But everyone who goes in, never comes out.

Until Rook Snowdon is thrown into Cinderkeep by mistake.

She isn’t a seductress.

And she certainly isn’t there to save anyone.

In fact, she only has three goals in life:
One, hide her true identity for as long as possible.
Two, nap and self-medicate with wine.
Three (and most problematic) ignore the fact that stress is slowly killing her.

Lucien only has one goal: escape and burn everything to the ground.

Unfortunately, everyone has their secrets and these two have many.

They just don’t know it yet.

Because she might be the key to getting him free.

But if he gets out, it’s not the world that will burn.
It’s him.

This isn’t just a Dark Romance.
It’s fated, feral, and dangerous—until it becomes something else entirely.

Darkest Destiny (Darkest Destiny Trilogy, #1) by Pepper Winters

5/5 stars

Pepper Winters proved once again why she is my favorite author of all time. I don't know what it is. But she always, always draws me and all my other parts into her books and utterly consumes me.

I must admit I was a little scared to dive into this romantasy. Pepper's first fantasy book is When a Moth Loved a Bee and while I really appreciated it, I didn't love it with all my heart and soul. And I was a bit scared that she would use that same and different tone in this book as well. But she did not. She took the complete opposite road and it WORKED. I love how connected I felt with the main characters and the panther.

And even though it is a romantasy book, it doesn't feel like a typical romantasy book. Pepper really created her own genre and has such a fresh take on the romantasy elements. While it is magical and mysterious, it is also set deeply into the modern world and the book tethers on that edge perfectly.

The book starts with 22-year old Rook Snowden travelling the world. Her parents died while trying to make immortality a reality. She got groomed to take Snowflake Corp, but ever since her parents died she suffers from severe anxiety and panic attacks. It is so severe she gets attacks where she is so dizzy and unstable she cannot function at all anymore.

Frank Lampton, the current CEO, calls her and asks when she is coming back, she isn't ready. She signed up for a six star spa and quickly ends the call and goes to Ember Health's spa Cinderkeep. When she arrives things aren't as they seem. The people announce there are only 30 spots and she counts over 80 women. When they try to force her to hand over her DNA she decides to leave but they won't let her. They force her into a fall and steal blood from her bloodied knees. She does her best to warn the other women that something strange is going on. But 2 women instantly shut her up and snarl we trained for this our entire lives, shut up! Rook is utterly confused and when her name is the last one being called she hesitantly enters the palace. But fear instantly consumes her and she tries to flee. But the gate is closed and drones force her back into the palace.

She quickly learns that a man lives here and that there are 2 sides. One side wants to kill him while the other half wants to bed him and bear his children. Her DNA was taken to see if they were compatible, aka not taking or being on any form of birth control.

When Lucien enters the room where they are gathered everything changes. He is scary, ruthless and blood instantly flows. He kills and protects himself at the same time. Rook seems to see the man differently than the women around her and when she cannot answer him he starts to choke her. They fall and the second their bodies connect both of them start to vibrate. He violently pushes her off and leaves everyone alone.

Cabins are scattered on the estate and Rook finds hers. She shuts herself off. Her heart freezes when the panther enters her cabin but soon she realizes he isn't there to rip her apart. They find comfort in each other and the next day he brings her to Lucien. And that is what kick starts this beautiful story.

I don't want to spoil too much about anything else. But this story is heavily centered around Rook, Lucien and Whisper, the panther. Rook finds out why Lucien is here and why all these women were brought to him. Her heart, and mine, instantly ached and broke for him. Something is happening to him and it is just bloody awful. Rook is able to see the man behind the facade, behind the hurt, behind the mask and behind that tall erected wall he put in front of himself. And Lucien? Lucien cannot trust anyone besides Whisper. He is so hesitant and he doesn't allow Rook to get closer to him.

It took me a few chapters to really get into this book. But once I was immersed I could not stop reading. It's a slowburn and Pepper really takes her time to set the tone and create the atmosphere in this book. I once said about Gild (The Plated Prisoner Series) that the first book felt like one long prologue. And Darkest Destiny feels exactly the same. It's a completely different story. This book is slow, but not boring whatsoever. It's a carefully crafted tale that takes its time to set up the world, to lay out all the secrets, questions and mysteries. We get no answers whatsoever. It's focused heavily on character building, connection and setting up the stage for the grand things that will come in the next two books. It's almost like this story is whispered to us. Like we get teased to take the plunge into the dark world that lays ahead of us. And I loved that. I love that I am aching to read the second one. That I crave the answers to all those questions that pummel through my brain.

It was so easy to fall in love with both Rook and Lucien. They both carry things that weigh heavily on their shoulders. They both struggle and they both ache and yearn for the same things. This book isn't lust based, while there is lust and attraction, that is not what binds these two characters. And Whisper. Oh my heart I love and adore him. I want my own Whisper now. My own protector and fierce friend. I love how easily it is to spot Pepper's huge love for animals in her books. They are like her children or an extension of herself. She makes the animals feel human, real, open, raw and she gives them true life in her books.

I really, really loved this one. And I am desperate to read the second book in this series. 5 HUGE stars from me for Darkest Destiny! Definitely a series I will read multiple times onces they are all published. ♥ Pepper, you own my heart and bookish soul. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating these magnificent stories. And girl! You nailed the romantasy genre! Keep on exploring and writing in this genre. You are a superstar. ♥

I’ve been itching for a new book from Pepper, and this book did not disappoint! I’m seriously excited to see where she takes this story. It’s very on brand for Pepper, but completely fresh and new at the same time. How she manages to make each dark story unique is something that will never cease to amaze me! Pepper pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in this book, and I was very excited to see that the story will take a turn into fantasy in future books, because that’s exactly what this story calls for.

I feel like the blurb tells you everything you need to know to go into this story, and if you’re like me—don’t even read it. Just go in blind!

Pepper Winters has long been known as a master of dark romance, and Darkest Destiny is no exception. This novel plunges readers into a world of intensity, and raw emotional conflict, weaving together themes of trust, sacrifice, and survival in ways that are both haunting and unforgettable.

From the very first chapter, Winters sets the tone with her signature lyrical yet brutal prose. The story is unapologetically dark, exploring the boundaries of morality and desire. The characters are deeply flawed yet magnetic—drawn together by fate and torn apart by circumstance. Winters doesn’t shy away from portraying pain and vulnerability, but she balances it with moments of tenderness that make the emotional highs and lows all the more powerful.

What stands out most is the emotional depth of the narrative. Winters crafts a romance that is not simply about passion, but about resilience and transformation. The protagonists are forced to confront their inner demons, and in doing so, they reveal truths about love that are both devastating and beautiful.

The pacing is deliberate, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the tension. Winters challenges her audience to embrace discomfort, reminding us that love stories are not always neat or easy—they can be messy, painful and profoundly human.

For fans of dark romance, Darkest Destiny delivers exactly what the genre promises: a gripping, emotionally charged journey that lingers long after the final page. It’s not a book for the faint of heart, but for those willing to step into the shadows, it offers a deeply rewarding experience.

I genuinely don’t know what Pepper Winters puts in her books, but science needs to get involved. She sent this to me LAST NIGHT and I dove in headfirst—no life jacket, no helmet, no survival instincts whatsoever. Did I sleep? Please. Sleep fears me. 🙂‍↔️

Talk about a slow burn… this book didn’t just burn, it set my soul on fire and then had the audacity to whisper, “Wait for it.” I was begging. On my knees. Still waiting to be ignited like a fool

This book grabbed my heart, shook it violently, and now I’m emotionally conflicted because how does every single release become my new favorite?! Someone please explain it to me. 🥲

Dark romance with a twist of magic and unbearable longing/yearning?
Yeah. That’s the trap.

Buckle up guys, this one is not for the weak, the soft, or the emotionally stable. 😌🩶

My first blow me away read of 2026, and of course it was Pepper.

This is one for those readers who love a slow burn, who want the hate before the all consuming love. This has dark themes, and dystopian themes. I devoured this and cannot wait for the second part.

Die for You vibes and enough mystery and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat, as always Pepper draws you in with her world building, you are right there with them, you can practically touch the scenery around you.

Well done... and bring on the next instalment!

After a long wait, I finally got my hands on another of Pepper's books, and although the beginning is contemporary, I, like Rook, was eventually thrown into a different world.

There's an estate called Cinderkeep tucked away in the English countryside. Rook Snowden, who suffers from a neurological disorder which makes her collapse at any sign of stress, decides take the chance opportunity to go there for a free spa weekend.

"I’d been called smart. A prodigy of some sort. I didn’t believe it. Whatever was going on in my head was probably the reason I suffered such awful migraines— my brain was either malfunctioning or functioning at a level that caused it to overheat."

Lucien Ashfall, is a severely maltreated prisoner on this estate with his pet panther Whisper, and longs to escape by any means necessary.

"Thanks to years of trying to escape, I’d learned almost every flaw of this compound. Every crack, every faulty hinge, every unpatrolled spot. It hadn’t helped me break out because I could never fight the vitalsync core, but perhaps tonight I’d get lucky."

This is dark romance with a huge difference. I was enthralled from page one. Lucien and Rook are two very lonely, very tortured souls. They are fire and ice. How can they help each other when they don't even trust each other?

How does Pepper come up with these wonderfully outlandish ideas?

This book ends on an impressive cliffhanger, but fortunately the next installment is only weeks away. I can hardly wait!

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and am leaving a completely honest review.

Lucien Ashfall has been caged for over twenty years at Cinderkeep. His lineage is what they want but why and who are they. Rook Snowdon is accidentally put in the very same place Lucien is by believing she was attending a wellness retreat. She wants to lay low and just survive but he wants his freedom and she may be the key to get it. Could they find a way to free each other? Who is Lucien really and why is he so special? Why does he feel different when Rook is near? This is a clever mix of dark romance scifi/pnr & mystery. Some questions may be answered but more will be asked before you flip to the last page. Nothing is at it seems at the Cinderkeep. Ending in a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting to see what will happen next! Brilliantly written as always. Told in first person and dual POV.

Reading a story written by Pepper Winters is like coming home. I get comfort in her brand of dark, her lyrical writing and expertly crafted worlds.

Darkest Destiny is the story you don’t expect, I’d suggest to go into this as blind as possible so that you can savour all the emotions and feelings this journey will unravel.

Pepper breaths life into the pages of this opus bringing us two fascinating characters, secrets and a web of mystery that will grab your attention and capture you until the very last moment. Even after parting ways with this enticing and mystical tale its essence will linger, wanting, craving more.

The story is told in dual POV and set in a world apparently contemporary but at the same time belonging to an alternate universe. The author wisely blends science and its powerfully devastating effects when placed in the wrong hands, with a touch of fantasy. These elements seamlessly combine and are woven into a powerful narrative. A journey I can’t wait to see where it leads.

I couldn’t put this one down. I went in mostly blind because, duh it’s a Pepper book. So it was agonizing for me to realize it’s part of a trilogy and now I have to wait for more! 😭😭 This storyline is unique and refreshing. Pepper has an amazing way of letting you feel everything. Definitely a slow burn, but honestly, I didn’t even care because every other emotion was raw and palpable on page. Darkest Destiny almost gave off Goddess Isles vibes if you enjoyed those, while also being completely different. I cannot wait for more Rook and Lucien. This right here is why I have been chomping at the bit for a new Pepper Winters book. Somehow she always manages to give something new and exciting while staying true to those dark angst vibes that I enjoy. I don’t want to spoil anything because I believe it’s best to go in blind, but know this is a book that is already living rent free in my head.

OMG I just finished reading this magnificent story with its gripping plot and enthralling ending. I am awestruck.

Once again, Pepper Winters has held me completely immersed in one of her most memorable (amongst many other) awesome stories. Her unique ability to vividly describe the scenery immerses you into the imagery of each scene.
I don’t know what to think as I contemplate what I just read and what lies ahead and I can’t wait for it!

Rook and Lucien are fascinating characters. Their unique back stories and mysterious backgrounds are captivating, and I can’t wait to learn more about them. I slowly relished every word, every utterance, every thought, and every emotion displayed by these two characters and I literally fell into the circumstances they found themselves in with awe and anticipation.

This is one of my favorites, amongst many favorites of mine from Pepper Winters! I can’t wait for what’s to come!

Do yourself a favor and read this story!

That cliffhanger!
Nooooo.
This was super fun ,super dangerous and very unique!
I did feel that we didn't get much development as, throughout the middle, it was a bit slow and repetitive for me. I mean, Lucien! She is not out to get you, ok???
I loved that it was kind of like The Bachelor, but creepier! It was also kinda vampiristic, but like without the fangs!
I absolutely loved Whisper and I am really curious about the next book! Glad to know it's coming soon!

So grateful for my ARC.

O.m.f.g. What can I say? From the first page to the last, I ate this book up. I started it up at 11pm last night and couldn’t put it down until I fell asleep for a couple hours then I got up ran my errands all the while thinking about this book. Finally got back home and immersed myself into its pages again. I’m not giving away spoilers but Lucien and Rook are now my top favorite characters from Pepper Winters and I’ve read all her books. I haven’t hit the preorder button so fast on a second book in a long time. I love dark books and this one definitely ticked off my boxes. If you don’t like blood or violence I would caution this book but man i loved every second of this book.

Pepper has the unique ability to create magic on the pages of her books. This dark romance is no exception. From the first pages I was hooked. This brilliant masterpiece is the start of a fantasy fusion trilogy from Pepper, and I love it!
Everytime I start reading Pepper's books I feel so connected to the characters, she takes you into their world so compellingly easy, I felt I was within the mindset of Rook, every emotion she felt was so visceral. The words flow with ease, descriptive , yet delivered with prose so poetic that you immediately fall into the world of her characters.
Fantasy, yet dark romance. Unique and magical I felt I was entering old England, C.s. Lewis with a touch of rich darkness that I couldn't escape from. I didn't want thus book to end!

Rook Snowdon is from Snowflake Corp, where she is meant to take over. After the tragic death of her parents, and suffering from the trauma of seeing them die Rook has intense anxiety and panic attacks that cause her so much distress she shuts down from stress of any kind. She has been travelling throughout the world avoiding commitment, enjoying her adventures avoiding any stressful situations, just sleeping, eating, and relaxing her mindset.
Thinking she is now getting a five star Spa weekend treatment she enters the world of Cinderkeep where she soon realises that she has entered a dark, dangerous prison with no escape. Lucien Ashfall has been trapped inside for twenty years, used for his blood, he vows to be set free. He is deadly dangerous but very attractive!
Every six months, thirty girls are sent into his prison and tasked with one goal: Make him create an heir by any means necessary. But some of the girls are set out to kill him. Lucien tries to find out what each girls intentions are, killing them when necessary. He also has a Panther called Whisper who is so tuned into Lucien you are sure he understands every word spoken to him. Taking a liking to Rook, Whisper soon becomes her protector. He reminds me of Aslan from Narnia, so regal, loyal but deadly.
The slow burn between Rook and Lucien is amusing at times with Rook's sarcastic humour. But also enticing, reeling you in with bated breath for more. Mysterious full of questions, not answers, we get this first instalment to ignite the fire that this trilogy is to become. It is gripping, enticing, passionate yet everything you expect from Pepper. I loved it, couldn't fault it and need book two to dive straight back in for more torturous darkness. Thankyou to Pepper and The Next Step PR for the ARC opportunity. All opinions are my own.

What did I just experience? This book had me absolutely hooked! Such a perfect blend of dark romance with sci-fi! ❤️
Lucien was just so tortured and Rook seemed really genuine! Best character by far though: Whisper! I want a pet panther who seems to actually understand what I need and force people to help me! Where can I order one?

The story itself was so interesting and unlike anything I had read before, while still including elements that I love in existing tropes. And the banter! The humour wasn’t all throughout, but there were moments where I outwardly giggled to myself, especially when Rooks attitude took over. But the tension was where it really got me. I didn’t know if I wanted them to hurry up and get together or keep the push/pull going! I felt everything they felt right up to the end!

I have been a fan of Pepper Winters for a long time and once again she has absolutely smashed it with another amazingly written and beautifully put together story!
Can’t wait for the next instalment- I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! ❤️❤️❤️

Darkest Destiny by Pepper Winters grabbed me within the first few chapters and never let go straight to the finish.

I went into this book relatively blind as Pepper Winters is an auto-read author for me and I honestly couldn’t remember what the blurb on the book was having read it long enough ago to forget. With that in mind, Darkest Destiny ended up surprising me with how much I loved it and the depth with which it pulled me into its pages. I had no idea what to expect from it and I was so excited to see where the story would lead and left with many questions as to what was truly going on with the characters.

Lucien is the grumpy, tortured male lead and I was obsessed with him from the first sighting. I enjoyed the little snippets into his head with his POV chapters but felt they were just sparse enough to allow for his character to remain intriguing and mysterious which was perfect for both his character and the story. I feel like too much of his POV would have necessitated giving away too much of the plot and the many questions that he naturally creates and this thin line was traversed perfectly. Rook on the other hand was a tempestuous character for me as far as like vs. dislike. She came across as a bit of an irritating character with her laziness and cowardice as far as facing any kind of situation. However, there is a reason for this which provides a small respite for her, yet she still came across as jarring at times, which made me struggle to always like her. Whisper was the true MVP, stealing my heart with his cuddly cat energy despite being a big, menacing animal.

The story danced a fine line between all of the questions brought on by what is going on, why Rook and the various other women have been brought to Lucien for his blood, what his blood truly means, and the lack of questions truly given. At the end of the book I was still no clearer on what was really going on and I want to know what is truly going on very much. Surprisingly, it managed not to be frustrating despite the lack of clarity on what was going on and I just hope that this will become clearer with the next book. I very much want it right away because I am so intrigued and I look forward to the sequel. Another highly recommend for Pepper Winters’ latest book.

Have you ever read a book slowly because you didn't want it to end? This is that book for me.

Pepper did a friggin phenomenal job with this romantacy book. Pepper sure has a way with words and I have a feeling this is going to be a HIT!

This book is very mysterious. Little by little you learn what is going on in the worlds of both the main characters. This book is very character driven, and world building. There is plot, and the plot is wonderful, it's just second so you can see depth of the characters.

This book explodes with tension, emotions, hate, and a longing love. I have a feeling after this first book the rest of this series so going to explode into something I am not sure I will be able to handle.

I do feel like this book you should go in blind. It gives you a even more of a mystery to the back ground of the characters.

Quote:

" If anyone ever asked for my story of what happened in Cinderkeep, I would tell them that was the moment that my entire life changed. A moment as quick as all the rest, yet powerful enough to change my heart and fate and future. Forever"

**I feel like this quote also expresses how I feel about this book as well.

My first 5 star read for 2026! Am I surprised that it was one by Pepper Winters? No.

Pepper Winters is one of my favorite authors and this book had me reeling! Her writing consumes and takes hold-not letting go until the bitter end. Her newest book is no exception.

This is my first time reading a dark romantasy by Pepper and her usual captivating prose just swept me away. She takes her time world building and revealing the backgrounds of both FMC and MMC. The sizzling chemistry between Rook and Lucien is so deliciously painful it hurts. The slow burn in this story almost did me in. I am still not okay. I don't want to reveal too much but if you are a fan of Pepper Winters or have never picked up one of her books before, I suggest you read this one STAT!

Pepper, you have written another masterpiece and I am in awe of you. I am panting and aching for book#2.

If you are looking for a dark romantasy with a twist and tropes like: Enemies to lovers, slow burn, anti-hero, and touch her and d!e vibes then look no further. This is it!

With her normal flair, Pepper has delivered a dark fantasy romance that is messy, dangerous and violent, yet also shows the resilience and depth of character in each of the MCs.
This is no easy read, however, as I have always found the end result is worth the pain.
I loved the dark and dangerous side of Lucian, the man he has become, driven by circumstance. Then there's Rook, a character that has made her life mission to do as little as possible and self medicate on alcohol.
A brilliantly written start to this Trilogy that will reel you in slowly, I am so looking forward to where we will be taken in the next book.

After reading several Pepper Winters books, I shouldn’t be surprised at the WTF cliffhanger, but it still snuck up on me. Don’t think you can like a MMC that ends lives, well, meet Lucien. This poor man has been used his entire life. You will feel right along with him with the way Pepper so exquisitely describes his pain and anguish. Let’s not forget about Rook. Dealing with her own demons, these two are pulled towards each other despite themselves. Unexpected feelings of trust and understanding can’t be stopped.

Ahhh. I just finished Darkest Destiny, and I NEED to know what happens next. I felt the book's pace was a little slow, but at the 80% mark, it picked up, and I was like, noooo!!!

Lucien makes my heart break. He has been through so much pain and closes himself off, rightfully so! Until Rook comes along and slowly starts breaking away at his barrier. I’m glad they found each other and can’t wait to read where they go next together!
Honestly, the main star of the book in my eyes is Whisper!

MMC: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
FMC: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.5 it was a little slow to pick up)

This is book 1 in the Darkest Destiny Trilogy and it’s off to an amazing start!

A master wordsmith, this author once again treats us to her unapologetic brutally raw and gripping story telling. Dark, and mysterious, all boundaries are pushed in such a compelling way that it made the story even more intriguing and had me glued to the pages looking for more.

Flawlessly created, flawed characters who were so unique and entrancing I entered their world and happily went on their journey.

The twists and turns, I cannot wait to see what’s next!

Just 🤯 seriously. Pepper has a real talent for writing anti-heroes you shouldn't really like, but that you feel for and want to succeed. Lucian is not exception here. Rook, for me, was a little harder to unpack. Both so similar and like calls to like, but not necessarily in obvious ways. This was unputdownable and I cannot wait for the next book. I NEED to know what happens next. I want to see them set the world on fire!!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

As a lot of my friends know, I am a Pepper obsessed fiend. Now with that being said I did have some qualms with the book. A lot of the same stuff happening. I know why and that it had the build up for the ending BUT doesn’t mean I love Pepper and her books any less. Did I want to throat punch Lucien more than half the time, yes. Did I want to yell at Rook and tell her to grow a pair, yep. Do I now want a pet Panther….maybe….ok, yes, absolutely.

I am sick and read this as quickly as my brain could with sleeping half the days away. I cannot wait to see what happens in the rest of the Trilogy. Great things are brewing!

Darkest Destiny by Pepper Winters is book one in her new trilogy. Pepper has written romantasy before but this time she takes this genre into a totally different and unique direction. It is an immersive experience as she has created a tragic but gripping story which is beautifully written with well developed characters. A slow burn as Pepper builds up the tension between Lucien Ashfall, Rook Snowden and the wonderful Whisper. The story is set in Cinderkeep, a mysterious and magical place full of secrets and danger. This is an intense and emotional tale of betrayal, deception, corporate intrigue and revenge. It is a very dark, disturbing and intricate romance but also one of friendship and hopefully survival.

Rook abandoned her responsibilities at her parents company after a tragic event left her with a nervous condition. She suffers from trauma migraines, anxiety and panic attacks and in stressful situations she can collapse and blackout. She now lives a reclusive nomadic lifestyle to ensure she stays stress free and rested. When she arrives in London, she’s invited to the Ember Wellness Spa Retreat Weekend but she quickly realises it is a set up. She ends up entering the Cinderkeep estate with no idea why she has been chosen, especially when the other women seem to all have an agenda for being there and she’s clueless over who Lucien is.

Lucien has lived in Cinderkeep for twenty years. He’s intense and dangerous because it has been a lonely and torturous life, full of hate and anger, pain and agony. He hasn’t felt any happiness or kindness in his captivity. There is a horrific reason he is there and can’t escape. Whisper, his pet and a need for revenge are the only things that has helped him survive. He is confused and distracted by Rook as she’s not like the usual women sent in. Was she really there by mistake
and on his side or is she part of another game being played on him.

Lucien and Rook might meet by accident but they actually have things in common and have been through similar situations. He is the last of the Ashfall dynasty for Brimstone Industries and she’s the Snowflake Corp heiress. They have both experienced grief and loneliness, have medical problems and trust issues. Rook has found herself caught up in his nightmare and unknowingly could be the missing piece he’s been waiting for. There is a real connection between them and as well as their physical attraction, they have a strange effect on each other. Were they fated to meet as she’s the only person who has tried to help and understand him.

Rook realises he’s changing her and her life will never be the same again. Has he finally found someone to help set him free and end the hell he’s been living in. Could the anomalies with their bodies mean they could heal each other? Loved the scene when Whisper comforts her and how they both talk to him like he’s a human. As the story unfolds there are questions galore but we don’t get many answers as this ends in a cliffhanger. Can’t wait for the next book to find out what happens next. Totally recommend this engrossing story - Pepper Winters at her best.

Plot: 4/5 • Spice: 1/5 ————> Oh, Pepper. You always manage to get me. You’ve done it again.

Rook is a dumb ass and falls for a free trip to the spa. Ironic, because she’s the sole heir to a cryogenics company. However, she has hidden her identity well and only one person knows how to get in contact with her.

She goes along with 100 or so women on this spa weekend retreat. No one apparently read the fine print - they’re going from 100 to 30. Suspicions arise in Rook when they make you take a blood test to continue on. Red flags. Red flags. She does not want to give them her DNA. When she’s forced, she starts noticing some of the women are for show. They’re stand-ins. Some of the women have no idea what’s going on. Some of the women have ulterior motives.

Basically kidnapped with the 30 women in this fortress of solitude things begin to surface. We are in the presence of Lucien Ashfall. Who has been under lock and key for the last 20 years. He’s been having his blood drained to keep his company alive. Literally.

Women die off. Some are murdered because they’re honestly there to kill him. Some women are there with the sole purpose of sleeping with him. They need to get an heir in them to continue the blood line. Over the last 20 years he hasn’t touched any of them. Not a single one.

Lucien and Rook have some weird connection that benefits them both. Taking away their pain. Neither of them wants to submit or admit they have feelings so they fight against them THE ENTIRE TIME. When this book ends, they’re both still virgins lol.

There is so much sexual tension and yearning at the end it’s palpable. I really want Lucien to cave. I want Rook to admit who she is and devastate him all over again. I want some many things. Both are excellent characters. I’m very much looking forward to book two. Because of course things ends on a dramatic cliffy.

DARKEST DESTINY

“And maybe, just maybe, she could be the one I’d been waiting for...”

“He clung to me with cruelty and desperation—like someone who feared they’d cease to exist the moment he let go.”

“You’re the only one reckless enough to talk to the monster everyone else wants to bleed to death.”

“I could exist in a never-ending nightmare of agony and blood, but I wouldn’t be able to survive her.”

🖤Considered to be a dark romance fantasy fusion—I found this story to be so unique which felt so refreshing to read.

🖤Every six months, thirty girls are sent into Lucien Ashfall’s prison and tasked with one goal: Make him create an heir by any means necessary.
But everyone who goes in, never comes out.
Until Rook Snowdon is thrown into Cinderkeep by mistake…

🖤Lucien’s walls are miles thick. A lifetime of being a prisoner, betrayed, used and tormented has made him cold and dangerous—a monster with his own death wish. But Rook is not like the others. For once, someone wants nothing from him. Still, his deep rooted trust issues drives him to push Rook away with threats and cruelty, even as he feels the undeniable pull toward her—a connection that feels fated, especially when she’s been the only thing that can ease his pain. I felt so deeply for Lucien, my heart literally ached for him.

“I hated that she hurt...like me. I hated that I recognised her agony and sympathised with my enemy. But what I hated the most was that she affected me. She drove me into a different kind of madness. And one day soon, I’d break.”

🖤This is set in modern world but has very interesting aspects that gives you fantasy and even sci-fi vibes. Its dark, mysterious and packed with palpable emotion. The cliffhanger has me desperate for book 2!

“Out of countless women, numerous enemies, and two decades of agony, she might finally be the one to ruin me.”

If this book doesn’t get the attention it deserves I might combust. I devoured this in less than 24 hours, couldn’t put it down.

Lucien has been kept captive over 20 years by the people who profit off his blood. As an attempt to always have access to his blood, every six months they send 30 women in to try and successfully bed him and produce his heir. Except none of them ever come out alive.

Rook receives an invite to what she believes to be a “spa retreat”, so imagine when she finds out she’s actually a captive thrown into some version of a sick competition to seduce a man who is impossible to seduce.

It’s a dark romance in an urban fantasy setting. Heavier on the romance but I wasn’t complaining one bit because let me tell you now the hate to love trope in this?? IMMACULATE.

This book was a slow burn, but considering this is a trilogy I know that the next two books are going to pick up pace after the cliffhanger this leaves you on.

Now I just have to patiently wait a few weeks for the next book to release (THANK YOU PEPPER FOR NOT MAKING US WAIT YEARS) because I’ll be dropping everything to read it.

Pepper Winters does what she does best and then pushes it further, cementing once more why she is one of my ultimate favorite authors. Darkest Destiny is unmistakably her: dark, immersive, and emotionally charged, yet it still stands apart, carving out a powerful identity all its own.

This is a story best entered blindly, allowing its shadows, secrets, and emotional intensity to unfold in their own time. From the first pages, the atmosphere is gripping, equal parts lyrical and ruthless, pulling you into a world where survival and (unwanted) desire collide.

Rook and Lucien are magnetic in their restraint. Their connection builds slowly through similar yet different pains, unspoken truths, and a tension that simmers rather than explodes.

The writing is lyrical yet brutal, balancing tenderness with raw emotional impact. Every chapter pulls deeper, every moment lingers. And Whisper completely stole my heart. His fierce loyalty and protection added so much soul to the story.

The slow burn was delicious agony, and that ending left me desperate, and counting the seconds until the next book. I cannot wait!
