First date? He ghosted. Second date? He threw up on her. Third date? He proposed.
Back in high school, Cora O’Hara was the invisible book nerd. Jay was the golden-boy star athlete who actually saw her—then broke her heart.
Now Cora is the Nevada state hydrologist, knee-deep in data and happily single. But Jay moves to town as the new firefighter with way too much charm and a dangerously flammable smile.
When a flash flood threatens their town, their worlds—and their unresolved chemistry—collide head on. She works in facts and forecasts…he thrives on instinct and adrenaline. But in the middle of the storm, they discover that opposites don’t just attract—they ignite. And as the danger rises around them, they’ll have to decide if they can keep their heads above water…or drown in something far more unpredictable.
My books are a thrilling blend of romance, mystery, and suspense — think Cupid Meets Crime Scene.
My journey into the world of romance and suspense started when my grandma handed me her well-worn copies of Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts novels — I was hooked.
My day job is a scientist, but I'm also a mom to both 2-legged and 4-legged children.

💭 My thoughts:
Childhood crushes, second chance romance, and a mystery? This series seriously has me obsessed! I absolutely loved this book and binged it in one sitting! The Cupid Meets Crime Scene series is just so good and I’m already counting down the days until book three, Zero Visibility. Jay and Cora together were EVERYTHING. I’m such a sucker for childhood crushes and unresolved yearning, and this book delivered that exactly right. I loved getting little glimpses into their younger years because it made their present day chemistry even better. The tension, the history, the “what could have been” energy is top tier. And on top of the romance, I genuinely loved the mystery plot too. The arson investigation kept the story moving and I thought the reveal of the culprit was a great touch.

***ARC Review*** Thank you to the author for the ARC copy.
I had a great time reading this story! Super fun, quick read. Jay, our MMC is so lovable, and Cora (FMC) is a smart and sweet woman in STEM (LOVE that!). This story has flash back scenes to when our MCs were teenagers and I absolutely adored those chapters. I also love the relationship between Cora and her sisters. This book made me laugh out loud several times and was very enjoyable to read. Definitely recommend if you like determined, sweet and spicy men; women in STEM, and sweet love stories with a crime investigation twist!
Thank you to @authorallisonbettes and @bookedwiththeemilys for the #gifted e-book.
This is the exciting second book in the Cupid Meets Crime Scene series. Having loved the first book, I was eager to dive into this one and reconnect with this charming group of sisters.
A captivating story of Cora and Jay who reunite years after high school. Jay, a brave firefighter, unexpectedly crosses paths with Cora, a passionate hydrologist. What makes it even more enticing is that Jay is her best friend's brother, a crush Cora has secretly harbored all through high school. Unbeknownst to her, Jay has also carried a torch for her and longed to reconnect. Their reunion sparks a rush of old feelings, reigniting the chemistry that never truly faded.
A series of dates leads to a fake engagement, fueling their attraction. As they team up to solve a string of arsons, their bond deepens even more.
What I appreciated most was the spotlight on women in STEM, with Cora’s profession adding a fascinating layer. The hilarious group texts between Cora and her sisters brought a fun, lively touch to the story.
Told from both Jay and Cora’s perspectives, seamlessly shifting between high school memories and present-day moments, the story beautifully weaves their history together.
This charming second-chance romance strikes the perfect balance between sweet and spicy, making it a delightful read.
⁀➴ Overall: This is a cute story about childhood friends reconnecting for their second chance and solving a crime along the way.
⋆⟢ Tropes + Vibes: 🧡 best friend’s brother 🤍 childhood friends to lovers 💛 second chance 🧡 slow burn 🤍 romantic suspense 💛 he falls first
⁀➴ Bookish Breakdown: The premise for this story was so good! I love a second chance romance, and seeing the characters get back together for their second chance was so sweet. There were so many crazy and silly moments that made you fall in love with the MCs.
It was nice to see all of the O’Hara sister family group chats again! I loved the family/sister group chats from the first book in this series and was excited to see them return. I love how supportive the sisters are of one another. The strong female friendships are everything!
I also loved that our FMC, Cora, was a woman in STEM. Any time Cora was dropping knowledge, I would always be so drawn in! We love a smart gal who knows her stuff! Working together with Jay, our firefighting MMC, on solving a string of arsons was also awesome! They made a great team!
Thank you to Allison Bettes and Booked with the Emilys for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I was able to receive this early as an eARC from the author. Another quick read with another woman in STEM - we love to see it. I’m still new to the romantic suspense genre, so I don’t have a ton of comparison material. Although I enjoyed this book, I felt the suspenseful crime plot was lost for the romance in the middle and that the ending was rushed. This book as a whole also felt less suspenseful to me than the first book. I do really enjoy the characters and the plot, and am looking forward to book 3!
Thank you to author Allison Bettes for the arc! I love that Cora and Jay were meant to be together even if it took awhile to get there. I also love that they were attracted to each other when they were teenagers and that Jay was determined to shoot his shot with Cora as adults as soon as he could make that work. What I love about Allison’s books is that the MCs are smart and career-driven and that the suspense truly adds to the development of the MCs’s relationship and the story and that continues with this book. I also appreciate the strong women that surround Cora and support her in every aspect of her life. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!
Ahh such an amazing book! I knew I was going to love this one as much as the first and omg I think it was even better! I love the second chance, brothers best friend trope and this is by far my favorite one I’ve ever read! It just kept getting better and better and also having a little suspense in it makes it the BEST! The fact these two had spent so many years apart and then meeting back up at a random conference, I love and then finding out Jay moved to Reno for Cora! I meet it melts my heart! Such a fun read and the perfect spicy scenes 🔥🔥 it’s a must read!
"A real man knows when the time is right to break down your walls - and when to pin you up against one."
♡♡♡
I already knew I was going to love Jay and Cora, just from reading the blurb and after reading their story, I can honestly say they did not disappoint!
This second chance romance had a little of everything. A little heat, a little humor, a little tension and just the right amount of mystery and suspense. I enjoyed reading about Jay and Cora's work, their close knit family and how their friendship turned into a deeper connection.
What starts off as a fated reunion turns into a spur of the moment fake engagement! The twists this book took to get our MCs together was unique but I loved it.
Nothing beats a down bad Hero who falls fast and harder. It's no wonder I fell for Jay from that very first cheeky smile and flirty wink! I loved his determination and his easy going personality. Cora was also a down to earth character. Her reactions and thoughts were so relatable. Her conversations with her sisters were so charming and hilarious. It has me itching to read Hazel and Gale's stories next!
Favorite Bits: 🖤 Frizzle the cat! 🖤 Gale (give me all the introverted/shy FMC!) 🖤 Jay's brand of humor (he had a little bit of a class clown vibe going for him but not OTT or abrasive, he was always a gentleman but loved to tease!)
Heat Advisory By @authorallisonbettes Cupid Meets Crime Scene Book Two
Let me set the scene- Best friends brother Young high school crush turned more (hot kitchen make out) Then he bolts to play baseball ⚾️ Time apart
12 years later Jay and Cora find themselves in the same town, Las Vegas, intermingled with there occupations. Jay is now a hunky firefighter who never got Cora out of his system. Cora is a badace hydrologist (studies water distribution, movement and quality above and below Earth.) Jay is off to a rocky start in his mission to win Cora back. Date one, he ghosts 👻 her completely accidentally, you know when you text the wrong person and let them know you can’t make it somewhere, then realize at the end of the day you didn’t text the right person, yeah it’s happened to me too 🫠 Date two, he sweeps her off her feet but not in the romantic way, but in the way that he lost his dinner all over his feet. Poor Jay was sick but was powering through to avoid missing his date with Cora 🥹 Then Date three, he spontaneously proposed in front of his boss to help gain favor over being fired for a permanent higher position in Las Vegas, I mean he does want to live by Cora and he really likes her, so I guess it made sense 🤔 to him at least!!! These two navigate a fake marriage, a real slew of arson crimes and a blossoming real relationship in Heat Advisory! A must read to solve who done it, all while love is intermingled in the air! Water and Fire don’t mix well typically, but it’s a good thing we have experts in both fields on our team ❤️ Download this steamy romance onto your kindle starting tomorrow ! And don’t worry if it gets a little too steamy 🔥 “You’re lucky you have a sexy firefighter here to help keep you safe.” He puffed his chest out. - Jay This one gets all the 🔥 and 💧 rating!!!

Heat Advisory is book 2 in the Cupid Meets Crime Scene series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone.
This story had a little bit of everything I love in a romcom: second chance romance, fake engagement, disastrous dates, and a couple with chemistry that never really went away.
Cora was probably my favorite part of the book. I loved seeing a woman in STEM as the FMC, especially one so passionate about her career and determined to find someone who understands that work sometimes has to come first. Her job as Nevada’s state hydrologist added a really interesting layer to the story, especially with the flash flood storyline running through the book.
Jay balanced her perfectly. He’s charming, protective, and deeply committed to his work as a firefighter, and I liked how both characters gradually learned to respect and support each other’s careers instead of forcing one person to compromise everything.
The romance was sweet, funny, and steamy in all the right places, but there’s also a light thriller thread involving an arsonist that keeps the plot moving in the background. It never overwhelms the romance, but it ties the story together nicely and adds some extra tension.
Overall, this was a sweet and engaging read with the cute humor that characterizes this series, and the feel-good vibes that make it perfect for a cozy weekend read.
I received an advanced reader copy of Heat Advisory by Allison Bettes, book 2 in the Cupid Meets Crime Scene series. This series follows a group of foster sisters, 2 of which are actual sisters. Cora is a Nevada State Hydrologist and Jay is a firefighter who has just finished his training in fire investigation. They both, surprisingly, live in Reno. There have been a number of questionable fires up in their area. Jay is part of team going out to investigate the origin of the wildfires. Cora is also there checking the burn scars to determine the possible danger down the road as far as flash flooding is concerned. Unfortunately, there have been several fatalities associated with these fires.
Cora’s best friend is Morgan who just happens to be Jay’s sister. When they were in high school, Jay was a excellent baseball play who was expected to go pro. The problem was that he was failing in school and was soon going to be cut from the team. Cora was brought in to tutor him. Unknowingly, they both had crushes on each other. During the tutoring the two became close and even kissed the night before Jay got called up to play ball. Cora never got to say goodbye and hasn’t seen him until they meet at a conference. Cora and Jay end up working together to solve these fires. The danger heats up as they get closer to solving the crimes bringing you to a great finish.
I thought this was a great book. My husband is a retired Deputy State Fire Marshall (investigator). I was so familiar with the terminology used in the book. I kept reading portions to my husband as I was reading. The author did a great job describing the investigation portion.
I couldn’t put this book down and would absolutely recommend it to those who like romantic suspense books.
Heat advisory by Allison Bettes Cupid Meets Crime Scene, Book 2 292 pages
Heat Advisory was such a fun mix of second chance romance and suspense! Jay and Cora have so much history between them, and even after years apart, the chemistry and feelings were still very much there. Watching them try to figure things out again after some hilariously failed dates had me smiling so much and rooting for them the entire time.
Jay is a firefighter trying to become an arson investigator and Cora is working as a Nevada State Hydrologist. Their jobs are so unique and added such a fun layer to the story. Now there is a string of suspicious fires happening around town. The suspense definitely kept me hooked, and that ending was SO action packed.
Then we have a bit of fun with Jay and for and the fake proposal misunderstanding.... Absolute chaos in the best possible way. Once the whole town believes they’re engaged, things get even messier and more entertaining. I loved tat added bit of fun to a suspenseful storyline.
This was a really enjoyable romantic suspense with heart, tension, and a couple I was rooting for the whole time.
Thank you, Partner, @bookedwiththeemilys and Allison Bettes for the #gifted ARC.
After reading Red Flag Warning, I was so excited to read Heat Advisory and it did not disappoint. It had all the best tropes: best friend’s brother, fake fiancé, he falls first, childhood crush and a firefighter mmc and STEM fmc.
I loved both Cora and Jay.
Cora was an awesome hydrologist and she reconnected with her childhood crush and best friend’s brother, Jay, who just moved to the same city as her. Cora has an amazing family and I loved getting to learn more about them. She was very sweet and I loved how after a few failed attempts at a first date with Jay, she was completely understanding and didn’t hold it against him.
This man. Jay knew that when he reconnected with Cora that she was it and she was the one. I loved how down bad this man was from the second he laid eyes on her again. I was so giddy when he got her to be his fake fiancé and the reason behind it! I also loved his relationship with his sister.
These two were so good together and I just loved that they still remembered things from their pasts. I loved reading the flashbacks from when they were kids too. The fact that they were childhood friends also kind of sped up their relationship and definitely brought up old feelings that may never have truly left.
Overall, I loved this book. When I read this I felt like I also learned a lot about fire and weather, it’s just so interesting. I cannot wait to read what Allison writes next. If you enjoy the tropes I’ve mentioned, then you’d definitely enjoy this book as well.
If you are looking for an easy, enjoyable read this book will fit the requirements. We have a second chance in this second book of the Cupids Meets Crime Scene series. This series follows the O’Hara sisters who are all women in STEM. It is Cora and Jay’s turn, and I loved their story. Their story has developed over time as they first crossed paths as teenagers. We get their story in the form of flashbacks. Jay is now a firefighter who has just completed his fire investigation training, and Cora a hydrologist (an earth scientist who studies the movement, distribution, and quality of water across and below the Earth's surface) I had to look that up! We get secret pining, best friends brother, so as these two reconnect, is it an act or real?
Cora and Jay also work together to solve a string of arsons, time together adding to the growing feelings. The mystery gives us the suspense and mystery element to the story.
Overall, a great read, I found myself having a hard time putting the book down for work and meals. I am looking forward to more from this series.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
OMG this was such a great read! I was mad, laughing, yearning, swooning, etc. throughout this whole book. Jay’s series of unfortunate events were so relatable but cringy that the same time. I loved Cora’s non-dramatic persona as well. This book was so refreshing.
Cora has been in love with her best friend’s brother for many years. Even though she hasn’t seen him in years, she ends up comparing every man to him and they just don’t measure up. When she happens upon him in Las Vegas, she cannot believe her eyes, nor her sister’s meddling!
Jay has spent years trying to be good enough to go back to Cora. He has tried to move on, but no one lights up his life quite like Cora. They only kissed once but that experience will never leave his mind. When he sees his chance to get her back, he won’t give up.
✨ What to Expect ✨ 👀 Romantic Suspense ❤️🔥 Slow Burn 💛 Friends to Lovers 💞 Second Chance 👨🏻 Best Friend's Brother 😍 He Falls First 🥰 Childhood Crush 👨🏻🚒 Firefighter MMC 👩🏻🏫 STEM FMC 💍 Fake Fiance 🚫 No 3rd Act Breakup
Thank you to Author Allison Bettes for the early copy of this book!
Cora and Jay have known each other since forever, and now they both live in Reno. He’s been crazy about her since the beginning of time, but his career got in the way. “If Cora only knew how much I had thought about her over the past few years, she would probably think I was a stalker.”
At present, they are both in the same city, he takes the risk and asks her out…except the first date gets ruined. As does the second. It seems these two are destined to circle each other forever. In desperation, he proposes - and of course in a small community, news travels fast. I do love a fake engagement!
One of my favorite characters is actually a side character because who doesn’t love a grouchy octopus who throws things to get attention and food?
This is an adorable second chance “fake” engagement romance set over the background of a serial arson investigation. If you’re looking for a fun, spicy read with a side of mystery, this book is for you!
If you are in need of a best friend’s brother romance with a healthy dose of STEM and dating shenanigans, look no further! Cora and Jay’s story hits all the spots!
Jay and Cora are such a cute couple! They say strong feelings never truly die, and if you can kiss someone in high school, leave the next day and not see them for years, and then propose on the third date, I’d say you really love someone! I’ve got to hand it to Jay, he wasn’t going to let Cora get away this time! Allison left me guessing who our bad guy was going to be, and once again I guessed incorrectly! I definitely didn’t see this ending coming!
This is such a fun series, and it’s only book 2! I can’t wait to read the upcoming books about Cora’s sisters! While our FMCs are strong in the STEM world, these books are done well and you can even learn a thing or two! They can also be read as standalones, but why would you want to do that when you can join the fun from the beginning!
You will love Heat Advisory if you love 🔥 Best Friend’s Brother 🔥 Second Chance Romance 🔥 It’s Always Been You 🔥 Slow Burn
Ahhh I absolutely loved Cora and Jay!! Heat Advisory by Allison Bettes was the perfect second chance romance filled with so many of my favorite tropes. Best friend’s brother? ✔️ Firefighter MMC? ✔️ Friends to lovers? ✔️ Fake fiancé? ✔️ Honestly, this book had everything I wanted and more!
After years apart following their first and only kiss, it was so much fun watching Cora and Jay reconnect and slowly rekindle their relationship. Their chemistry was incredible, the banter was hilarious, and the emotional moments hit so well. The sequence of events leading up to the proposal had me laughing out loud, and the spice was so good too!
I also loved the suspense woven throughout the story — I genuinely did not see that ending coming. It added such a great layer to an already addictive romance.
I’m already counting down the days until Hazel’s story later this year!!
Thanks to Booked With the Emilys and Allison Bettes for a gifted eARC.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but I may have loved this one even more.
It delivers second chance romance complete with flashback scenes. Dual POV. Great banter combined with laugh out loud moments. Romance with some crime investigation mixed in. And I was hooked immediately.
Jay was so incredibly endearing. And Cora being a woman in STEM made me love her even more. She’s smart and driven.
Their history together made it apparent they had feelings the and the flashbacks perfectly built up all that unresolved tension between them.
But can we also talk about the sisters group chat making a return because I am an absolute sucker for family group chats in books!
The mix of romance, humor, danger, and heart made this such a fun read.
Also: First date? He ghosted. Second date? He threw up on her. Third date? He proposed.
I was super excited to read this book which it did not disappoint. It is the second one in the series and it just got even better. You get this amazing narrative that takes you on a messy beautiful roller coaster of a ride. You also get some mystery weaved into the overall story, a touch of suspense, spice, and banter. I loved Cora and Jay. These two characters were utterly perfect for each other. I also liked that they had known each other since childhood and that this weaved one of my favorite tropes into the narrative, the "it's always been you" trope. An excellent read. I devoured it in one sitting. This is a definite reread for me. So if you like a STEM FMC, a firefighter MMC, best friend's brother, childhood crush, and a fake fiance romance, then grab a copy of this. Thanks so much to the author for a copy of this. All opinions are my own and freely expressed.
Heat Advisory comes in blazing hot as fire and nature collide. Jay and Cora are absolutely adorable, with a shared history filled with sweet longing and stolen kisses.
Despite the years apart, their reunion feels natural and easy, as if no time has passed. Jay’s determination to win Cora back is undeniable—his charm and flirty nature will have you smiling the entire way through.
Cora, though strong and capable, wears her heart on her sleeve, making you want to both hug her and cheer her on to take that risk. Together, they bring happiness, laughter, and just the right amount of tension to keep you hooked.
An unpredictable fire keeps everyone on edge, leading to a suspenseful chase and an unexpected twist that heats up the climax.
A second-chance romance with a touch of suspense that truly delivers.
"Thank you Allison Bettes for the ARC. This is my honest review.
This was such a fun and quick read, and I really enjoyed it! Cora has had a crush on her best friends brother, Jay since childhood, but life has kept them apart. When they reunite as adults in Reno and both investigate a series of suspicious fires, sparks fly.
A series of unfortunate (but hilarious) circumstances leads to Jay ghosting her on their first date, getting sick on their second, and fake proposing on their third. As news spreads of their 'engagement', they decide to fake it while Jay goes for a promotion at work.
This book was so fun to read! With a criminal subplot (involving arson and investigating the responsible party), the push and pull of Jay and Cora, and cameos from Iris from book 1, I devoured this in two days!
Thank you, partners, @bookedwiththeemilys @authorallisonbettes for the #gifted eARC
This is the second in the Cupid Meets Crime Scene series but absolutely can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read book one (YET!) and didn’t feel like I was missing any crucial info.
I LOVED this book! Jay and Cora are an amazing couple. Both each other’s high school crush, they reunite 12 years later to find the spark that was there had ignited. It’s fake engagement at its best. Plus, the suspense as they try to figure out a string of arsons and they get closer. I love women in STEM being highlighted and Cora’s work is so interesting! The group of sisters and their entertaining group text were a welcome addition.
What You’ll Find: 🧍♂️Best Friend’s Brother 💍Fake Fiancé 1️⃣He Falls First 👫Childhood Crush 🚒Firefighter MMC 🔬STEM FMC
Heat Advisory was the perfect blend of romance, mystery and humor! This is book two in the Cupid Meets Crime Scene series and it just keeps getting better and better. Cora and Jay were absolutely adorable and had such a fun relationship. I feel like lately I am on a roll with great second chance romances and Heat Advisory was no exception. These two together are so natural, lighthearted and steamy. Jay was absolutely hilarious and had cracking me up the entire time! From the mishaps, to his sense of humor, to the way he loves Cora so well, he is just the best MMC! I love Coras determination and tenderheartedness. She was just the perfect match for Jay and they both complicated each other so well. I could go on and on about how adorable this story was. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait for Rogue Wave!
Heat Advisory is a standalone romantic suspense in the Meet Cute series featuring Cora, a state hydrologist, and her high school crush, Jay — a hunky firefighter/arson investigator. Their unfinished chemistry reignites when an arson investigation throws their worlds together, and the tension definitely burns bright. Between the simmering attraction, danger-filled moments, a lovable golden retriever, and a bookish scientist heroine paired with a slightly possessive firefighter hero, this one kept the sparks flying.
3.5 ⭐
As always a special thanks to author @authorallisonbettes and the lovely team at @bookedwiththeemilys for granting me the opportunity to read and review Heat Advisory. All opinions expressed are entirely my own. #gifted #ad
Jay and Cora stole my heart from the very beginning - their romance began with some significant bumps. First date, he ghosted her. Second date, he threw up on her. Third date, he proposed!
This second chance love story was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. Jay was absolutely smitten with Cora and didn't hesitate to let her know. Cora, slightly hesitant at first, quickly realized her high school crush was worth a second shot. Working together to catch an arsonist and attending a wedding where they're both in the wedding party, Jay and Cora's relationship naturally heats up. Dealing with a fake engagement, awful exes and a serial arsonist, they found true love and a happily ever after.
Another gem by a very talented author! Allison Bettes is a must read author!
I love this series! The second in the Cupid Meets Crime Scene and I read it in one day. Jay was everything I love in a MMC, athletic, driven, loves to joke but is great at his job, is willing to drop everything for his family and his girl. When he panics and makes Cora his fake fiancee, it made me smile so good. Like what a silly reaction to have. This book flowed so well together
This is an interconnected standalone series, but I was super excited for this one because of the first one, Red Flag Warning.
During Red Flag Warning we got to know Iris a bit and I can't wait for the next one in the series to get to now Hazel and the animals she takes care of a bit more. She seems like a funny girl.
“First date? He ghosted. Second date? He threw up on her. Third date? He proposed.“ A compelling mix of a second chance at a romance with STEM and suspense. When Jay moved back to town, Cora had to face her unresolved, conflicting feelings for her best friend’s brother. Their past connected them (childhood crushes!), their present jobs brought them together again (he’s a firefighter and she’s a hydrologist and there’s a seriel arsonist!), and a fake relationship was a cute start to their future. I enjoyed the balance of mystery and danger with the romance—his charm and persistence was a refreshing opposition to her determination. A quick and cute sophomore book in the Cupid Meets Crime Series. Thanks to the author and Booked with the Emilys for the eARC
"Heat Advisory" is a fast, fun romance where two childhood crushes finally get their chance at love. What makes this book an even more interesting read is that they are both solving an arson crime along the way. Jay is the absolute sweetest MMC ever. He had a major crush on his sister's BFF in high school, and years later, he moved to Reno just to be in the same town she lived in, hoping to rekindle what they had in high school. Cora was just as in love with Jay in high school, and seeing their fake engagement turn into a real relationship was so sweet. You could tell from the beginning that they had something special. I'm loving this series and can't wait for Hazel's story.
This is my new favorite book by this author! Jay and Cora brought the heat but also so much heart in their story.
Their first three dates did not go as planned but that didn’t stop either of them from going after what they both wanted. Both of them yearned for each other for many years. I just loved Jay’s heart and how sweet he was with Cora. She’s actually someone I could see being friends with. I really love how Allison writes women in STEM (especially in weather roles). Another amazing story in this series!
