Okay, look, being a 17-year-old child genius working my way through Harvard was supposed to be the hardest part of my life.
I’m Marie—smart mouth, zero impulse control, laser-focused on one getting custody of my baby brother to keep him out of foster care. Oh, and building an Iron Man suit and eventually taking over the world. One thing at a time, though.
But when a gorgeous older man at a museum tempts me with a combination of mansplaining and faulty math, I find myself tied up in the basement of an abandoned dentist school. Standard serial killer, right?
Not quite. Turns out, he was a vampire. And he’s turned me into a bloodsucker on the way out.
Bye-bye, Harvard. Hello, tiny, creepy night college in Eternity, Louisiana. I've got a place in a dorm room at Noctiluna House because, get this, the previous occupant was brutally murdered in what is now my room.
Common sense would dictate I should try and find her killer, just in case they come for me and try to carve my heart out like they did to her. So, I’m on the case, and it should be easy. After all, I’m something of an expert on serial killers.
But I’m about to discover that interviewing suspects can be tricky when all you can think about is chewing on their neck.
The thirst for blood consumes me. I want to find the killer; I want my PhD, but I can't stop thinking about that sweet, delicious vein juice.
A Little Bite is book one in the Eternity College Chronicles, a fun new supernatural comedy and urban fantasy series that’s a little bit Buffy The Vampire Slayer, a little bit Wednesday, and a whole lot of Big Bang Theory.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
There's very little in this world I love more than a new series from an author I adore, and this author is right up there in that list!
This book is a new series in a world with many series written in it, but you do not have to have read those series to enjoy it. I mean, you'll enjoy it more because you'll know some of the background stuff, but there is more than plenty to keep you busy in this book!
Marie is a firecracker who is morally gray and trying to find her way through the new world she was dragged into without her consent. She's smart, funny, socially awkward, and driven. Oh, and she's a bit unhinged. I love that this author writes unhinged protagonists. It's so much fun!
I can't wait to find out what all is going on with Marie, her baby brother, her new college, her new friends, and her new life. I hope you'll be there with me - it's going to be a bumpy but enjoyable ride!
An excellent new book in an existing world - this series feels like coming home, but with new trouble.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you met Marie before and wanted more... congrats, your wish has been granted. Good news: she's here, she's chaos, and she's delightful.
Marie has this wannabe-evil villain vibe that is honestly iconic - like she's trying to be scary but keeps stumbling into "accidentally moral-ish" territory. The sidekick as the angel-on-the-shoulder? Chef's kiss. Because Marie left unsupervised is a problem. Our girl's got goals and she's not gonna let some vampire stop her.
The cast we're introduced to is a super fun mix, and the world-building hits that sweet spot: enough detail to feel like you're there, without bogging things down or making you forget the story.
Plus we're teased with a handful of things and I know Lauretta will not disappoint. It’s an excellent addition to an existing world - fresh main character energy, strong setup, and the kind of teasing breadcrumbs that make it hard to wait for the next book.
Bottom line: this is an excellent new book in an existing world, it's a great start to Marie's adventures, and I can't wait to read more.
🖤 new MC energy in a familiar universe 😈 villain era vibes (but make it fun) 😇 angel-on-the-shoulder sidekick dynamics 🌍 world building that supports the story instead of swallowing it 👀 breadcrumbs that make you immediately want book 2

A Little Bite is the story of Marie, a newly-turned vampire who has arrived on campus at Eternity College with one purpose - to get her doctorate in experimental physics and gain custody of her younger brother Ackie. Her scientific mind is brilliant - and when she discovers there is a murder mystery to solve, she's determined to be the one to do it. But how is she going to manage her thirst amongst so many humans?
This book is so brilliantly, irreverently bonkers and at first, I was so very, very confused by Marie. She's like a supernatural Sheldon Cooper, fiercely intelligent, supremely self assured, passionate about knowledge, and utterly hopeless at being social. Her love for her younger brother is seemingly all the affection her heart can give - other than hero worshipping a potential lecturer at Eternity College, she has absolutely zero time for anyone else, no matter what the angel living on her shoulder begs her to consider. (An actual angel lives on her shoulder - I suspect there is a very important back story there!). The angel keeps her moral compass alive, despite Marie's overwhelming tendency to want to do what serves her best purposes, not that of anyone around her. Marie becomes laser-focused on the idea of solving the murder of the girl who's death led to her getting a place at Eternity, and her instinct is to accuse without much in the way of evidence, realising after she's made the accusation that she can't possibly be right. This should rub people up the wrong way, but they all seem to think that she is new friend material - her new roommate, Harriet, plus Thalan and Egbert. Marie's angel is desperate for her to let them in, but Marie is seemingly on a one way ticket to lonerville -until a surprise turn of events at the end of the novel leave her looking at life in a new way.
The pacing of this novel is fairly steady, until the last 15%, which leaves you gasping for breath with a mixture of the turn of events and also laughing so hard at Marie. You go from a steady plod through Marie getting used to the people in her halls, meeting her dream professor, her desperation to solve the murder, and dealing with her thirst, to reveal after reveal, which turn pretty much everything you thought you knew about Marie and Eternity College upside down. It's fast, frenetic, and one minute desperately sad, the next side splittingly funny. Poignancy is studded with inelegant snorting at something Marie says or does - there is some heavy material towards the end (mostly off page), but Hignett has managed to ensure it is treated with respect, then lightens the mood immediately with a one-liner or a drop of self-deprecation. The mystery surrounding Marie's real name continues - I'm so intrigued, and suspicious that it will give me a right giggle when it comes to light.
This book is very much centred on Marie and her quirks, with not a great deal of content coming from the supporting cast. I do expect that when book two picks up, this will change, as the events at the end of this one are pointing towards big changes for Marie - and I cannot wait to see how the very Sheldon-esque character learns how to function with friends and as part of a hunter duo (even if that hunter technically sees her as his usual prey!)
This series is shaping up to be one that makes me laugh hard, as so many of Lauretta Hignett's works have done previously. I can't wait to see where Marie's story takes us next - if this one is anything to go by, I look forward to more hilarious lack of self awareness, more advice from a long-suffering shoulder angel, and Marie finding a path in life that involves her embracing her new vampire status, getting her Doctorate, rescuing her brother - and finding her people at the same time.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
I was intrigued when I first met Marie in Daphne’s series, but now I need to know! Lauretta is teasing us.
Lauretta has given us yet another amazing cast of characters with unique personalities. I’m completely absorbed in the story when reading and enjoy the range of emotions evoked as Marie’s tale unfolds.
The way that Marie owns her actions is very refreshing. She is very self-aware, although also a bit naive at times.
Lauretta deals with some very hard issues in a straightforward manner and allows her characters’ humanity to shine through. Life is not all sunshine and unicorns. The way the characters take charge of their destiny is empowering. There is light and hope, however, in the darkness.
Fast paced and amusing. Cleverly written and a new take on the paranormal university scene. Marie is complicated but self aware. She's a great heroine and I can't wait to read the next book.
When an evil vampire turned Marie into a vampire it completely derailed her plans get an education start a career and get her little brother away from their unstable mom. Harvard is out so now she is off to a night school in the middle of a bayou, to call the school strange would be an understatement. The student director seems to have a desire to burn people her roomie is a witch and the whole community hates vampires. Marie got her spot due to a student getting murdered so she sets out to find the killer. Nothing goes as planned the teacher she admired is awful, her dorm has an odd assortment of supes and she is not finding the leads she needs to find the murderer. This first in series is a fantastic read! I can't wait for the next book!
A whole new series by Lauretta is always a treat. Marie was in Daphne’s series and she’s a genius just-turned vampire with strong narcissistic traits and an external moral compass in the shape of a literal angel on her shoulder. She’s starting a new college and there’s a lot for her to learn about her new world.
I really enjoyed her first book and devoured it. There’s lots of new characters and it’s a rather diverse bunch so far. I love how Lauretta touches on important topics with a deft touch that doesn’t underplay the topic but places it seamlessly within the story and makes it interesting at the same time.
This was fangtabulous, the queen of the unhinged MFC is back with bite, and Ms Hignett has left me enthralled with this new series. Every book I've read by this author always leaves me wanting more, this one being no different. She has a gift of writing compelling, slightly off the wall female characters you can't help but fall in love with every time, not only with their sass but what actually makes them tick, each unique in their own ways. Add to that her skill at phenomenal world building, and her special brand of humour that she infuses into her storytelling, sprinkled with witty banter and this has become another instant hit for me.
When I was first introduced to Marie in Daphne's series I found myself thinking oh my god I absolutely love her. She's smart incredibly so, has an insatiable curiousity, is definitely wacky (which automatically endeared her to me) and has zero filter. So I was looking forward to seeing what surprises her character had in store for me, and believe me there is more to her than meets the eye.
After being turned into a vampire at 17, Marie has to drop out of Harvard a dream she has desperately wanted not just for herself but to be able to support her younger brother Ackie, to get them away from their mother. (And let me tell you I've hated some of Lauretta's characters in my time, but damn this woman had me seething with hatred). Ackie is the only thing Marie loves in this world and she'd burn it down to protect him. So when her harvard dream turns to ashes, she finds herself enrolled at Eternity College where she can take her classes at night. But after discovering the only reason she got a place there was due to the fact a student was murdered and a spot became available, Marie decides she will solve the case. After all she's a expert on serial killers and she's a genius, right?. However, not everything is as she thought it would be especially the fact that vampires are despised in Eternity and she will need to hide what she is.
I especially loved the side characters, Thalan, Egbert and Marie's roommate Harriet, who are determined to be friends with her, even though she thinks she doesn't need any (she definitely does.) And Ronan Bishop a professor at the college who literally made my jaw drop as he wasn't what I was expecting at all. Yep I can't wait to see more of them in the next book and see what other suprises they have in store.
I'm already irrevocably hooked on this series already and with that absolute banger of a cliffhanger I'm left hanging on the edge of my seat. I need book two pronto. Lauretta has done it again 10/10 highly recommend 😁
Another fantastic start to a new series by the talented Lauretta. This time we dive into what happened to Marie, the accidental teenage vampire, from The Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series. As Marie heads to Eternity College to continue her education at night she will find a less than accepting supernatural community, a place where vampires are not welcome, and a college where she needs to hide her true identity.
All the enjoyment and engagement I have come to expect from this author is present, as she builds yet another new set of characters in a new location in this UF world, and makes you want to know more about them and see the found family evolve that we always anticipate. Marie is as unhinged yet likeable as all her FMCs, and undoubtedly has more to unveil about her character as the series progresses, which I am very much looking forward to discovering. The crew building around here is quirky and I am sure will be an interesting bunch as the series develops, along with a certain good looking singer 😉. As always I devoured this book in one sitting, I always find Lauretta’s books impossible to read any other way.
I remember reading a book set in this world ages ago... The great suffocation thing rung a bell.
This book missed the mark for me, I didn't laugh once. Wednesday was effortlessly funny, Big Bang was funny, Buffy had depth.....Marie was well just mehhh. I went through my skimming motions just to get to the end. Really shouldn't compare books and call them similar. I already had expectations and they fell flat.
I also fail to see how a fledgling is stronger than older vampires. Marie is 3 weeks old... 3!! Let's be honest at this point my interest had fled. But the nail on this was the lack of any romantic anything. Marie was condescending in a very aware way.... It was off.
I doubt I will remember this book by the end of the week..
The writing and plot was fantastic. I like how Marie was turned and actually hates being a vampire and thinks it's the biggest inconvenience in the world. I found that really interesting. I also really love the relationship between Marie and her little brother, Ackie. It's very sweet. However, Marie is the most insufferable character. Look, we love confidence and competence. But she is so arrogant and it took away from my enjoyment of the book. And I can't tell if it's intentional or not. I can't tell if I'm supposed to like her because Marie doesn't really seem to have redeeming qualities. I'm all for morally grey characters but everything Marie does is because she thinks she is better than everyone else. Will I still read the sequel when it comes out? Probably. Will I want to bang my head against the wall because of Marie's superiority complex? Also probably.
Have you been missing Daphne? Well it's time to get to know Marie. If you have read the Hidden city super sleuth series, you may remember super smart Marie's origin story, being kidnapped and experimented on turned her into an unwilling vampire. It's put all of her Harvard plans into jeopardy as she can't go to Harvard when she can't step into the sunlight. So enter Eternity College a place where the sunlight averse or working student can do all their study at night. Enter into Marie's world as she tries to keep the angel on her shoulder happy by keeping her homicidal tendancies in check. If you are caught in a book hangover from the ending of Daphnes tale come and spend some time with Marie. Marie's crazy fun.... I promise!
I've read all of Lauretta Hignett's other series, and this one is just as good as the others. The main character is very engaging, and the plot is quick. The author leaves some hints about Marie, and I can't wait for the next book to find out what's going on!
This was cute and made me laugh out loud in a few spots but it could have been better. Yet another "series" that should have just been one book but was split into multiple parts then had filler added. I won't be reading book 2.
Marie has a real thirst....for knowledge Dedicated, Studious, and Oh so thirsty!!! Situational ethics with wit and sass!!! You're gonna love it!!! Highly recommend reading in sunlight
Another great adventure! I started this series with Prue and was delighted to find out there was so many spin-offs! I was a little sad when Daph and Duwayne adventures ended but then I found out that we were going to follow Marie to college! Yay!!!
Hands down, this book was an excellent introduction to new characters who are adjacent to all of my favorite characters in my favorite world, and it only left me wanting more. It was funny, entertaining, and a page turner. I loved every word of it and excited for the next installment!
My only complaint with this new series, is I want more and I want it right now. I highly recommend this author, this book and all her previous series.
Wow, great start to Marie’s story. Marie is after knowledge in the form of a masters and a PhD. It soon becomes apparent learning about the supernatural and being a vampire might just have a higher priority.
I have read all Laureate Hignett's books and have loved them all. I love the craziness, sass, and the outlook of the main characters and the storylines are always great and keep my interest from beginning to end. The only downfall for me is having to wait for the next book.
I remember Marie from the Daphne books. Wonderful to get to know her more. I am not usually into college or school based stories. This one works either way a delicious mix of twisted morals and unusual heroes
Let’s be clear I LOVE this author, I’ve read all the other books she has written. When Marie was introduced in The Wolf series which is centred round Daphne Ironclaw I liked her a lot.
We love a morally ambiguous queen! But Marie out on her own? I didn’t love this story. The writing is still good, I still rate this author, I just didn’t love this book.
Oh wow, what a great start to a series. Marie is everything. Just love her quirkiness. Her little brother/son is adorable. Can't wait for their reunion.
Ms Lauretta Hignett has the midas touch when she puts pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) How else can I explain my obsession with all things Lauretta? It's a case of 'gimme, gimme, gimme!' whenever I see a new book by this incredibly talented author. She dives right in, spiking my adrenaline right off the bat, and yep, she's painted these words in gold, glittery, enticing, captivating!
Post acne Marie is suddenly on everyone's radar, every sleazeball ball's that is, her incognito days are sadly over. She's 17 and she has a LOT going on...in her head... oh my stars, what a COOL character she is! I 'met' her in Lauretta's previous series, with Daphne, and yes, you guessed it, I immediately adored this whacky character! Oh and Marie's a vamp BTW. Who was turned only weeks prior by another sleazeball. Who's willpower is seriously tested, constantly. As she says, 'I had to sit near people, inhale their delicious bacon and egg roll scent, and not bite them.' That's pure torture. Not all the sleazeballs that Marie encounters are men, nope, her own mother is sleazeball numero uno, an uncaring, selfish, self centered sleazeball, who never looked out for Marie and, even worse, Marie's young brother. A brother that Marie would go to the ends of the world to protect. But wait, there's more.... Marie has an angel on her shoulder, desperately trying to keep Marie on the straight and narrow, but, being a supposedly imaginative angel, that's a tough score to pull off.
Becoming a vamp put a definite crimp in her plans, she could no longer attend Harvard, I mean, she'd shrivel up in no time trying to get to class during the day, you know, sun, vamp... But Marie is super dooper smart, Einstein smart, so Daphne managed to find her a spot in an exclusive college that has night classes, AND a professor she idolises, win win, right? Except, that leaves the one person she cares for most, all alone. Her plan is simple, she just needs to achieve it, oh and turn 18 too, to implement this plan. Although she gets to meet her idol, Prof Mannheim, neither he nor university is as she assumed. On the plus side, she got the coolest roomie, a witch and, by association, Egbert and Thalan, friends she didn't think she needed. And her biggest surprise was Ronan Bishop. Yeah, that was a mind spin! Which Lauretta excels at, NEVER expect the expected in a Lauretta read, be prepared for earthshattering twists, murder, mystery and mayhem!
Marie is more complex than a Rubik cube, even she doesn't know how all the 'slots' go together. Her early trauma, her sass, her sense of superiority, her incredibly smart brain, her intense love of her brother and the fact that, contrary to what she says, she IS a very caring, protective person, is so endearing. I WANT her plan to succeed. I WANT her to achieve these goals...'my grand life plan—get custody of Ackie, get Deborah committed and-slash-or incarcerated, build my Iron Man suit, and take over the world.' She just needs to find a way through this bizarre new situation she finds herself in, one where everyone loathes vampires... and she sees first hand why. I'm loving Ronan Bishop, who I can see muddying the waters, especially as he loathes her kind. Except, her retort floors him, “Dude, you’re really wasting your energy, here. Nobody hates me more than I do.”
If there's one thing that stands out, and I was being forced to say what I love the most in a Lauretta read, it would be hands down her FMCs! They are all... different, uniquely 'out of the norm', kooky, possibly unhinged but enthralling, and easily put me in a rapturous state. They're all on the other side of crazy, or smart, or better put, smartly crazy. But it's the combo of an awesome, fast paced plot, beutific world building, her dizzyingly fabulous engaging banter, the stimulating humour, the emotional tug, that turn every single book into a page turning, stirring read. This is a another Lauretta winner, I'm salivating for more!
Marie is a 2 week old vampire turned against her will. Now she has had to drop out of Harvard and start at Eternity College in Louisiana - the only college she can find that offers night classes. Once she gets there, she decides she will solve the murder of the previous girl who had her room since Marie is a self-proclaimed expert on serial killers. She also has to take care of her 10 year old brother (long distance) in the middle of going to class, trying to solve the murder and trying not to drain every human she comes across. While I was reading Daphne's series I was introduced to Marie and immediately knew I wanted more of her story! She is definitely the female, vampiric version of Sheldon Cooper mixed with Dexter. She is weird and knows it. She has been used to being overlooked her whole life and isn't sure what to do now that people pay attention to her since she was turned. She is a genius (albeit an evil one) and has plans of world domination. She also has an angel on her shoulder guiding her and helping keep her conscience clean. I could go on and on about her all day! Every time Lauretta writes a new series, I think that main character is my new favorite and Marie is no exception! We meet a lot of new characters from her dorm, and they are definitely an eclectic bunch. We don't get too much about any one character, but enough to make you want to get to them better or be suspicious of them. This book doesn't have the world ending battles we are used to from Lauretta (I'm sure they will be coming in future books though) but it does not lack personal battles. Marie is constantly trying to keep herself from drinking every human she meets to quench her seemingly endless thirst. There is definitely a mystery, and it was hilarious as Marie went around "interrogating" suspects. I loved the ending and the honesty the 2 characters found between themselves. And the plot twist! Of course! Of freaking course! I am now (impatiently) waiting for the next book because I have to know what happens next and also because I read this whole book in less than a day!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
2.25* It follows a character introduced in Wolf vs series -- I did read that first but I don't think you really need to. (That series is the 4th? in a shared universe of series. To date I've read book 1 of one, and all of the series set before this one, and the one that proceeded that on the timeline. -- I realised in that series that it followed on from others but didn't feel the need to go back and read them first.)
Lost points for doing the 'hook' scene, then going ... earlier and going back to days before. The earlier started with a good enough hook and I really dislike the show scene then go back to see what lead to it, be it in books, shows or films.
MC was fine, the other characters were okay. I just shouldn't read academy (etc.) set books where the lead is a student, because I never really like them. I was hoping my liking the character from her 'guest' appearances in the previous series and the universe the books are set in would be enough of a counter for the usual plots that come with an academy setting.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes for the author, probably not for this series.
Would you recommend?: Yes if you like academy set books.
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
This series is set to be another hit from this author!
Marie is a character from the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series. She was taken under the wing of Daphne, in her child protection role, when Marie was’turned’ and became a vampire. She played quite a pivotal role in helping Daphne at the end of the series, but now she is off to continue her education.
Marie is extremely clever and was destined for Harvard on a full scholarship. Since being a vampire means that she is unable to continue there, Daphne has helped her get into Eternity College, which offers night time classes.
Marie is almost too smart for her own good - she is super confident in her ability to solve any problem, but she is new to the Otherworld and not necessarily as good of a judge of character as she thinks. She is abrasive, snarky, sarcastic and doesn’t think she needs friends. Her forcus is all on her studies and keeping her little brother safe…oh, and finding out who murdered the previous occupant of her room at the college, whose place she has been given. Marie starts off at a run and doesn’t stop in this first book of the series. As the book progresses we learn much more about the real Marie - her personality, her history, her love for her brother and what really makes her the way she is. There is so much more to Marie than she shows on the surface.
There is a lot happening in the book, as Marie is settling into her new situation, both educationally and vamperic, as well as her investigation into the murder. There are lots of interesting new characters, mysteries to solve and laugh out loud moments too. I’m looking forward to reading more and getting to know Marie better - I suspect I could become quite fond of her!
Well well well, we can't be shocked that this book was gonna be fabulous can we, I mean look at the author! She has the midas touch!
Ok, down to the review! so we have met the main character 'Marie' in Daphne's Wolf vs series, so you should know what you're getting to, but to the uninitiated Marie is a bonafide child genius (now 17), she is fierce in her love for her sibling and more cunning than a fox!
In Daphne's series we find her newly turned into a vampire so she has to reluctantly give up her place at Harvard and be transferred to Eternity College in Louisiana in which all their classes are post sunset (perfect for those who are UV challenged). Given she is a physics nerd and her fav professor is teaching there it seems like a dream come true.... but and we all know we love a but her place at the college was opened up due to a little incident of a student being murdered in her bed.. so now Marie is hell bent on uncovering the murderer (we she is a super fan of serial killers so what better challenge).. also let's add in the fact that everyone at Eternity hates vampires and she has to keep her true self hidden just to mix it up with amusing consequences.
Marie had never had the option or requirement for friends before, so that's a challenge. Her sibling is so far away to keep safe another challenge... something is off with old school vamps in the area yet another challenge!!
Seems like Marie has it all going on and then some! So buckle in buttercup and enjoy the ride.. this book is a feast for the imagination! Blood, broken hearted singers, enthralling vamps, jimney cricket and fierce love with a dollop of murder mystery.. what's not to to love! Start it now.. like right now! What u waiting for????
