One of my favorite danmei of all time. Super well-done on all fronts, be it characters, plot, or relationship dynamics. The leads are well-written, flawed, and operate on very different principles, which inevitably lead to clashes. They have good chemistry and I'm super invested in their relationship. At first, I couldn't understand why the story is told from the MC's point of view; the ML seems to have a more defined arc. However, it becomes apparent in the later half of the book when the story shifts gears to tackle in the entertainment industry. Since women tend to be disposable in danmei, I'm really impressed by the incredible cast of female characters. They are distinctive, nuanced, and extremely aware of their precarious positions in a male-dominated world. 蕉三根 is an exceptional author and I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

I really loved this novel. The characters are well written and have so many layers and complexity. I especially liked how realistic the story is, particularly in its portrayal of the showbiz industry and rape cases. It doesn’t shy away from difficult topics and handles them in a grounded way.

The romance is top-notch. Yuwenruo is exactly the kind of male lead I enjoy—very opinionated, but also understanding and gentle when it matters. Chiye is a very intriguing character. Even though there were times when I didn’t like how he behaved, I could still understand him. In some ways, I even saw myself in him. Once you know his story, his actions and decisions make a lot of sense.

The side characters are also great. Each of them has their own story, and their personalities are well crafted in a way that really supports and builds the main plot around the MC and ML. The story itself is extremely page-turning—not a single moment bored me.

By the end, you’ll understand why this novel is called Pretense. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
