Holiday Season 2024!

Mirren’s beloved great-aunt Violet has one last dying wish-to be reunited with a long-lost hand-illustrated book from her childhood, that her father used to read to her, and she used to read to Mirren.
It’s called “A Child’s Garden of Verses” by Robert Louis Stevenson, and although there are many different editions, the one she had as a child was hand illustrated with black and white drawings by Aubrey Beardsley.
Mirren is keen to track down the book, and for once, the internet is no help, so she sets out on a journey to track it down scouring rare book shops from London to snowy Hay-on-Wye and Edinburgh’s cobbled streets.
The bookshop owners say the book is a myth-and would be quite valuable if it does exist.
As she chases down leads she “bumps into” the mysterious and charming Theo, who, unbeknownst to her, is searching for the same book for reasons of his own…and they aren’t as altruistic as hers.
Will she be able to deliver joy to Violet on her last Christmas? 🎁
I think readers who were disappointed wanted a different kind of holiday love story-one that focused on Mirren and Theo. But, I LOVED the love story that we were given-that of a loving young woman and her bond with her great Aunt.
But mostly this book resonated because I loved how this story made me feel.
Those of us who are TRUE book lovers all remember the books that made us that way!
The first book I loved was called, “Little Black, A Pony”. I carried it everywhere and cried when a bully knocked it out of my hands and into a puddle of water ruining my copy.
The first story that made me sob hysterically was “Charlotte’s Web”.
And how I wish I still had my series of Trixie Belden mysteries which I preferred to Nancy Drew. They are probably valuable now as well, and I still read mysteries today because those book started my passion for Mystery and Suspense!
I don’t read many Holiday stories, but I am so glad that this is one that I chose for this one for 2024. It’s been my personal favorite for this season!

Mirren has recently been dumped by her boyfriend, who also took off with her flat deposit and holiday money. When her mum rings and asks her to go and visit her great aunt Violet, who is in a home, she jumps at the chance to see her beloved relative.
When Mirren gets there, Violet reveals she is sick and probably doesn't have long left to live. She tells Mirren that there's one thing she would really like to have again before she dies—a book that she had when she was a little girl.
Mirren goes on the hunt for said book, trawling various bookshops; unbeknownst to her, one of the booksellers she approached has sent his nephew on a spying mission to follow her—the book she is looking for turns out to be very rare and very expensive.
This is a quick read set in the UK and has some nice descriptions of locations, especially Edinburgh. I have to point out, though, whilst it is tagged as romance, that part is minimal, to say the least; I'd say it falls more into the contemporary fiction category.
It's one I picked up purely because I wanted a short and upbeat Christmas read. Whilst I liked the book hunt theme and it wasn't badly written, unfortunately it ended up being a bit depressing rather than uplifting. Finished on a slightly happier note, but it was all a bit flat, lacking in depth and seasonal cheer!

Ehhhhh, this was just ok for me. I like reading holiday themed books while in the actual holiday and this was short enough to add onto my ever growing list.
It took me almost forever to get into the story. I did like the relationship between the MC and her dying aunt…it was sad and sweet all at the same time.
The premise of the story surrounds a cherished childhood book the aunt wants her niece to find before she dies. Along the way our MC seems to meet an almost love interest which made me think this was going to be a romance but it wasn’t. I’m not disappointed about it since romance is not my fav genre but if you’re looking for that in this book, you will be disappointed.
I appreciate this being a quick little holiday novella but feel the storyline needed better structure. Without spoiling anything, the story just leaves you scratching your head a little and then closing the book with an unsatisfying sigh. I’ve read much shorter, much more satisfying stories.
If you’re looking for a quick holiday read, like the UK setting and appreciate a book oriented story, you might like this. I prefer a little faster paced but this was what I would call a slow cozy read.

When did Christmas cozy become code for depressing and boring?
Don’t go into this thinking it’s a romance, it’s women’s fiction. There is kind of a side romance but it’s not good and it goes nowhere.
No cosy Christmas feels, just a depressing story about a woman looking for an old book as her dying aunt’s last wish. She visits a bunch of old bookstores and gets conned by a man who’s supposed to be the love interest but he then disappears for the rest of the book to come back at the end so we can pretend this was a romance with a HFN. It wasn’t. The ending was very unsatisfying but I won’t spoil it here but might in my comments.

The Christmas Book Hunt was actually more enjoyable than I expected. This is a cozy meet-cute between a woman, Mirren, who is trying to hunt down a rare book for her dying Great-Aunt, and Theo, the nephew of an antique book shop owner.
Yes, I did cringe with Theo’s overuse of the word “milady”, as he tries to charm Mirren with some old-fashioned, posh, speak. It makes me think of fedora-tipping, incel, types.
But this story was neatly wrapped up in just over 120 pages, as Mirren and Theo travel the length and breadth of the U.K. all in search of this one edition of a book, that may not even exist. Will Mirren be able to make this Christmas miracle happen for her Great-Aunt, Violet? And will she find something else unexpected along the way - love?
Good for a quick read on a Winter’s evening - in front of the fireplace or, in my case, in a warm bath.
Was one of my Amazon First Reads picks for November, but I saved it for the start of December.

The Christmas Book Hunt is an adorable sweet festive book for all book lovers and lovers of adventure.
Mirrors great-aunt Violet is in a care home for the elderly and has taken a turn for the worst. Violet tells Mirren about a beloved book her father used to share with her during the war written by a famous author and hand illustrated by an artist that has been rumoured to exist (within the used book collectors world) but nobody has found. Mirren promises her great-aunt that she'll do all she can to track this copy down for her to hold in her hands one last time before she passes away. But the task isn't an easy one, nor a cheap one. As Mirren travels through the snow encrusted streets of Hay-on-Wye to Edinburgh, she doesn't give up to make her great-aunts wish come true. But hot on her heels is another interested party with an interest in the book, but for very different reasons.
This was the sweetest read for Christmas and brings the joy and hope back into the season just by reading it. I loved how we got to meet Mr Mcreedy and Carmen again in Edinburgh too (from the Christmas Book shop books) and the gift Mirren brings back for Violet was such a tearjerker!

I had to read this real quick to channel my inner holiday festivity era. The romance was non existent though. However, that snowy setting and the fact this novella is based on bookshops added a wholesome vibe to it ❤️.

This is so not my genre as they often make my eyes roll often in boredom. Ok I’m a cynic - nuff said. Anyway, this was a really good one and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Really nice characters, a search for an elusive book featuring Robert Louis Stephenson whose book of verse just happens to be a favourite of mine with fond memories attached. Might have just admitted to a softer side. Add in bookshops in amazing locations (Hay-on-Wye, yes the famous book festival, Northumberland, Edinburgh and Melrose), winter, snow and a jolly good outcome and it all adds up to a cracking festive read. Oh, mustn’t forget the very engaging writing style.
Back to the blood and gore.

Ad hoc Read November 2024
This was free book through Amazon Prime in November 2024 and never one to miss a free book, I said thank you, despite, as I have said a few times, I’m not a great romance reader.
It turned out actually to be quite fun, and I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, when the fact that it’s Christmas based made me generously give it 4 ⭐️.
Tasked by her seriously ill, favourite Great Aunt to find a treasured book from her childhood, Mirren, ends up rushing around the country in the snow in her little car. Travelling from book shop to book shop she meets someone she thinks is a friend or is he really. This acquaintance is actually the grandson of an unscrupulous bookseller who wants the book for himself.
A fun meet-cute novella that delivers a lot considering its short length.

She’s tasked with finding a specific hand-illustrated book from Violet’s childhood. Initially confident the internet would lead her to the book, Mirren’s search unexpectedly takes her into the world of rare books.
As she delves deeper, Mirren encounters bookshop owners whose interests are piqued and some are desperate for it thinking of how rare it must be. One owner even sends his nephew Theo to spy on her, he coldly tells him he must not return empty-handed.
Mirren’s journey leads her to bump into Theo at one of her temporary lodgings. Unbeknownst to her, Theo also wants the same book, driven by a desire for an easy life to please his uncle. They hit it off and she rather trustingly explains what she is looking for.

She's broke and heart broken.
When her mother tells her that her great-aunt Violet is not answering her calls, she rushes to the care home where she's living.
Violet informs her she has cancer and would like to see again the book she loved the most in her life - "A Child's Garden of Verses", by Robert Louis Stevenson with illustrations, on the book itself, by Aubery Beardsley.
It got lost when Violet's father died so many years ago.
So she goes off in a quest to find it for Violet but to no avail, ending up in Edinburgh.
She has a shadow, Theo Palliser, that she thinks he's a nice person helping her.
But is he what it seems?
Nevertheless, when she returns home she brings with her a person from Violet's past, that will give her some comfort and hapiness in her last days.

Very fun title and cover that immediately drew me in! Jenny Colgan has created an adorable Christmas themed story. Mirren is running all over the place in search of her sick aunt's childhood memory of a book she desperately wants to see again! As expected (by the cover) Mirren meets a handsome and charming man whilst hunting for said book.

Absolute snooze fest. I could not, for the life of me, care about finding that book after 120+ pages of nothing. It’s not even Christmas cozy. Christmas is hardly mentioned and it’s more depressing. The romance is literally doesn’t exist and the ending was not good. It’s like the author tried to take away the expected but in reality took away the only hope for this dreadful story.

Thought this was touching. Not really a great romance story which is fine by me because what I enjoy best is the bookish Christmas vibes which is why I find myself reading Jenny Colgan’s books, especially at Christmas when I just want something easier to read than my usual fare. My favourite of hers is The Christmas Bookshop and some of the characters from that book make an appearance in this short story which I was delighted by. I loved Joan, a little old lady with a sassy wit. She cracked me up, as did McCready along with his relationship with Carmen. So overall, I was pleased with this short story though it’s a sad one. I think if the romance had been less problematic and had more chemistry, this would have been 5 stars.

Protagonista caută o anumită carte foarte rară despre care i-a povestit mătușa ei și ajunge într-o grămadă de librării și anticariate. Descrierile sunt super faine și atmosfera de Crăciun se simte foarte bine.
E și un strop de romance acolo dar punctul principal este căutarea cărții.

I love Jenny Colgan’s writing and The Christmas Book Hunt was wonderful! I adored the idea behind the story. Mirren’s beloved great-aunt Violet is very ill and her one wish is to be able to see a very special, beautifully illustrated book she remembers from her childhood. Mirren can’t find any trace of the book online and starts to visit rare and antique bookshops to try to track it down. Also on the trail is handsome Theo although his reasons for wanting the book aren’t quite so altruistic!
I loved following them on their book hunt and the lovely places they went to from the famous Welsh book town Hay-On-Wye to the snowy coast of north east England, right here to Edinburgh and down to the Scottish borders. It was a fabulous bookish treasure trail to read about. I was really pleased to spot some familiar characters from some of Jenny Colgan’s earlier books when Mirren and Theo were in Edinburgh, like meeting some old friends.
The romance element was beautifully done too with a growing attraction between Mirren and Theo and Theo feeling conflicted because of some family issues. Their very formal way yet playful way of talking was fun! The love Mirren had for her great-aunt was so touching to see as well. I especially enjoyed finding out about the story behind the book and was hoping that Mirren would find it for her aunt.
With The Christmas Book Hunt being a short story, it is perfect to fit in at this busy time of year. It has everything you could want in a Christmas story with loveable characters, a heart-warming romance, snow, a moving ending and has the added bonus of books. A seasonal delight!

why were they using snapchat at the ripe age of what i’m guessing is 30 and why did we have to be reminded of it every 10 pages. it’s like a mum trying to be cool and letting us know she knows what snapchat is

Good stuff! I enjoyed going on this book hunt with Mirren and Theo very much. It was especially awesome learning about all the various bookstores in London, Wales and Scotland. I’d give anything to go visit them all someday and just breathe in their air. Mirren was a gentle, empathetic character and I really appreciated her.

I love Jenny Colgan's books and this one was good but just too short. I'm not keen on short stories or even a collection if short stories so I only read this as its Jenny. The story was lovely tho.
