I think the problem is that we love to talk and we’ve bitten off more than we can chew. Now, we’re chattering with our mouths full, and as specks of food get spewed all over the place, we’re left wondering how we got here in the first place.
This is a classic case of much too much ado about nothing and everything.
Our suspect, one miss what’s-in-a-name, the apple of the author’s eyes and so, most understandably, every character’s too.
But, lo and behold, Miss What’s-in-a-Name aka Annie aka whatever her second name was idk anymore aka Cate Kay is in love with her bestie Amanda and so, most understandably, she’s the IT girl too. Two IT girls are much too much IT girls to chew, don’t you think?
There’s a codependency thing going on here, also a classic do-I-want-her-or-do-I-want-to-be-her dilemma, and a couple-that-does-everything-together exhaustion humming in Annie’s veins, as she combats her personal demons of identity and what she wants from the world. She wants so desperately to be her own person, and not just a shadow to her best friend, and then in the midst of all this coming-of-age Netflix original dramedy, something bad happens. And then, Annie escapes.
She does that way too much for comfort, tbh. She doesn’t want to be anybody’s shadow, so she runs from her own. But she carries with her the perfume of who she is, take the codependent out of the codependent equation but you cannot take the codependency out of them.
So she finds herself latching onto another, rinse and repeat.
She wants so desperately to be the centre of the universe, even as she continues to orbit Amanda, and then the others, but especially Amanda, always Amanda. And even as she grows older, and moves places, changes identities, the sickeningly sweet stench she runs so desperately from, follows her, because it is her.
All of this, fun character study. But then, there’s a whole section of just the most childish miscommunication arc which gets old really fast, and the conclusion is lame, because remember how we bit off much too much ado about nothing and now, of course, we’ve got to chew all this, AND gulp it down, so naturally, instead of doing all that, we’re just gonna slowly let it slide right out of our collective mouths as a barely there finale, after needlessly chewing for hours, and say, hey, they all lived happily ever after without actually providing any catharsis to all the mess that was created because, ok bye, here’s a cookie for the road.
How’d you like that for a finale, huh?
