Zaïda de Vico ist eine außerordentliche Frau. Schön, abenteuerlustig, mutig, selbstbewusst, emanzipiert. 1859 in eine englische Adelsfamilie geboren, verstößt sie schon als junges Mädchen gegen alle Konventionen. Eine frühe Liebesheirat hält sie nicht davon ab, in Zürich Medizin zu studieren und ihren Beruf später in Florenz und Mailand mit großem Engagement auszuüben. Da ist sie bereits mit ihrem zweiten Mann und Vater ihrer zwei Söhne verheiratet. Mit ihrem dritten Mann – wie sie in der Resistenza gegen den Faschismus - flüchtet sie am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs nach Zürich, wo die beiden sich zu Psychoanalytikern ausbilden lassen, in der Überzeugung, sich damit für eine bessere Welt einzusetzen. Ein pralles Leben lang liebt Zaida, leidenschaftlich und bedingungslos: Ihre Männer, ihre Söhne, ihren Beruf, die Menschen. Am Ende ihres Lebens, über hundert Jahre alt, schreibt sie ihre Geschichte auf. Eine Hymne an das Leben und an die Liebe.

About the author

Anne Cuneo (6 September 1936 – 11 February 2015) was a Swiss journalist, novelist, theatre and film director and screenwriter.

She was born in Paris of Italian parents, but studied in Lausanne. Her first novel came in 1967 and was called Gravé au diamant. In 1979 she received the lesser prize of the Schweizerische Schillerstiftung and by 1987 she worked for Télévision Suisse Romande.

Een echte aanrader. Zeker (tenminste dat zegt de schrijfster) fictief maar als je leest op wat voor memoires het heeft gebasseerd vraag ik mij toch af hoeveel waarheid en/of ware feiten erin verweven zitten. Zaida is een power vrouw, en power house wie zich door alle ontberingen heen niet van de wijs laat brengen. Een ode aan alle vrouwen die zich tegen de heftige stromen in ontwikkelde tot een bijzondere artsen, advocaten ect. Een vrouw die arts wordt en ook nog met de ontwikkeling van de geestelijke gezondheidszorg te maken had en mede ontwikkelde. Het boek beslaat de tijd rond de eeuwwisseling (1900) de eerste en tweede wereld oorlog.

This sure was a book.

The characters were all pretty flat and one-dimensional, and the plot didn’t offer much either. It was pretty bland and didn’t really provide much of anything other than a list of historic events since the relationships between characters were never much explored beyond the surface level.

I like the framing of the narrative though. The book being presented as this self-written, rambly, repetitive memoir that was translated by the author’s great-granddaughter adds to the idea of legacy and the fickle nature of memory and the recollection of (personal and collective) history.

Ik had even nodig om in het verhaal te komen, maar al gauw zat ik er middenin. Langs de zijlijn maak je belangrijke geschiedenis mee van rond de vorige eeuwwisseling en maak je kennis met diverse personages en hun invloed op de tijd. Prachtig geschreven en met een sterke en eerlijke vrouw als hoofdpersoon. Zia Zaïda was al snel een rolmodel geworden voor me.

Als je "De 100-jarige man die uit het raam klom en verdween" leuk vond, is dit boek zeker de moeite waard. Serieuzer van toon, maar nog steeds een luchtig portret van het leven voor en tijdens de oorlogen; tussen het bloedvergieten en andere verschrikkelijke, doch belangrijke gebeurtenissen door.

Read in German. Fine read, some iffy parts.
a) every single character she encounters thinks zaida is the best coolest lady ever and falls in love with her or swears fealty for the rest of her life
b) historical novel issue where there's a lot of "oh sure everyone ELSE was a raging antisemite at the time but not me and my friends we were cool"
c) style is a little flat.
d) so Freudian. So so so Freudian. He wasn't that cool, guys. Also not all your romantic relationships should remind you of your dad jesus why do I have to say this in 2018.

Ik weet het niet wat ik van dit boek moet vinden. Het beschrijft het uitermate boeiend leven van de hoofdpersonage, Zaida. Het leest bovendien super vlot maar af en toe geraak ik geïrriteerd door het zeemzoete en de soms ongeloofwaardige opeenvolging van gebeurtenissen en 'toevallige´ ontmoetingen .. ik ga het een tijdje laten liggen tot mijn ergernis getemperd is en dan geef ik het nog een kans ;-)

This is an attractive story of a positively persistent woman with admirable behaviour in difficult circumstances. The way it’s written equals this attractiveness, and therefore it’s easy to follow and identify with the protagonist. Recommended! JM

England, Italy and Switzerland from the end of the 19th century to after the second world war, with the effects of the two wars on people and families. A number of historical errors in the part on England, so probably elsewhere, too.

Mooi verhaal van een sterke vrouw prachtig geschreven. Neem nooit voetstoots aan wat anderen je zeggen. Zonder verzet komt de wereld geen stap verder. Psychoanalyse is lessen trekken uit het verleden, om niet in dezelfde fout te vervallen.
