I have really enjoyed this series so far, but unfortunately this one was just ok. Dan and Sam time travel back to Medieval France with Joan de Arc marching with her army towards Orleans to free the city from the English. Sam gets accused of being a witch while they are there and Dan has to make difficult decisions to protect not only Sam, but everyone he cares about. I feel like the story dragged a little bit with not as much action as the others. There wasn't much of a push with Victor in this book either which I'm assuming we'll get more of a conclusion in the next book. The romance was also your typical teenage confusion drama. Hoping the next one will be a little better.

This has a pretty strong concept. It's ambitious and when it works, it's great, but unfortunately it stumbles a lot.

There's no real conclusion. Instead it just stops. Some of the dialogue around the church is a bit over the top, with everyone involved coming across cartoonishly evil with no nuance.

I have not read any of the previous editions of this book, but liked the premise of time travelling and visiting an historical point in time, as I do like historical fiction and fantasy.
I listened to the audiobook and am unsure whether this impacted on my overall view of the book. The main character is an adolescent and so the narrator needed to have a younger voice, but I am not sure whether this fitted the character well enough.
The pace, intonation was excellent, yet I struggled to feel engaged in the story. Accepting this was a YA book, it maybe focused on younger, less mature readers and kept things simple. Whilst I can usually just run with things I had niggles…
In this edition, the main characters, Dan & Sam, go back to medieval France to help Joan of Arc help the French fight the English and take back the French town of Orleans. Dan gets readily accepted close to Joan to detect the glitch. There were no issues with a modern person effortlessly riding a horse, or speaking French.
The depiction of Joan was really good, I thought her character and religious passion were authentic. There is an insight into how superstitious people at that time were, how witches were unfairly perceived and of the torture randomly dished out by the clergy. The approach to battles was intriguing and insightful. Hopefully something really interesting for young readers to be introduced to.

I never felt much tension or fear of death or injury. It didn’t convince me. Whilst Dan and Sam are enraptured by each other, I did think Sam’s character and role in this quest was underdeveloped. Whilst ultimately a strong young women, having lived through her own traumas and able to relate to Joan, she just didn’t feature. There were no insights into her experienced locked up in the prison cell and tortured and this was a big miss for me.
The backstory with Victor and his faction was a bit twee. They were trying to be sinister and intimidating, but again I couldn’t fully buy into this. I think YA readers are usually able to enjoy a more mature and compelling discourse that this that has been presented. Whether I am missing this and there are loads of fans that consider it pitch perfect, then it maybe just me, but whilst it wasn’t a bad book, I was somewhat underwhelmed.

4 Stars! This is book 5 in the series ‘A Jump in Time’ and while it can be read as a standalone, for the most part, this series is best read in order. I’ve read every book in the series and definitely think reading them in order is the way to go. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers, at all, & this series does have partial unfinished endings. This book is a tad less exciting than the previous books and I’m kinda wanting Sam & Dan’s story to wrap up already because it feels too drawn out. This series is more a YA fantasy with a dash of romance. In this one, the main characters, Dan & Sam, go back to medieval France to help Joan of Ark help the French fight the English and take back the French town of Orleans. A lot of hurry up so we can wait or retreat type of fighting. Got bored with that and skimmed through a bit. Would’ve loved to have Sam’s point of view since she was kinda not there for a lot of their time in France. This book made me wonder how many people hear angels speaking to them and we just give them medications or write them off as crazy. Did Joan really talk with angels? And why a poor young girl and not a rich and powerful man? What eventually happens to Joan in real life is awful. So glad I wasn’t born back then. That would suck. And who knew Monks were such sadistic, sanctimonious, pieces of poo. I thought monks were all peaceful & loving. I learned a lot by reading this book. I may not have loved it as much as the previous books but it was still a winner that I totally recommend. I feel like middle, high school & even college aged kids would love this series. Heck, I’m almost 40 & love this series!

For the past year, Dan has been doing his best to survive on his own, following the death of his father at the hands of the dastardly Victor Stahl. Luckily, Dan has his girlfriend Jenna and her family nearby, along with his time jumping partner Sam to help anchor him. But Stahl is determined not only to win the American presidency but also to succeed in world domination, and Dan is one of the only people who can thwart his efforts. Of course, Dan is not able to achieve this goal on his own, so he must work together with his companions in order not only to keep them safe, but also to protect the world as a whole from Stahl’s ruthlessness.

This fifth in the Jump in Time collection is a comfortable, familiar re-entry into the series. Definitely best for readers familiar with the first four installments, this story begins shortly after the previous book ends, returning readers to Dan’s life and the increasingly high stakes surrounding him. Occasional strong language and violence are peppered throughout the narrative, making the book best suited to young adult readers as a result. However, frequent dialogue and action widen the potential readership of this book, making it accessible to mature youth who can tolerate some intensity without detailed romantic interludes. Good pacing and effective descriptions draw readers into the story, helping readers to understand Dan’s surroundings in both the past and the present. End matter includes select historical notes that may inspire further investigation on the part of the reader. Engaging and historically inclined, this adventure story is a positive addition both to its series and to library collections for young adult readers.

I enjoyed this Jump in Time book 5 as much as I had enjoyed the previous 4 books. The glitch in time for this time jump took place in 1429 and involved Joan of Arc during the Seige of Orleans where she is supposed to rally the French troops to fight against the British. Sam became fast friends with Joan but unfortunately was accused of witchcraft and jailed, leaving Dan to rescue her (versus Sam rescuing Dan during the four previous novels). No spoilers - but I must admit that I am learning a lot of historical facts from these books! Will Dan be able to rescue Sam or will she be burned as a witch before he can fix the time glitch? I listened to the audiobook version of this novel and I have to say that the narrator, Mark Sanderlin, is phenomenal. His voice and intonation really help me to feel as if I am in the middle of the action, deep in the past with Dan and Sam. I'm looking forward to reading the next Jump in Time novel to see where Dan and Sam will go next. Even without reading the previous books, this story pulls you in fast and keeps you hooked. The premise, another glitch in time sending Dan Renfrew and his partner Sam Cahill into the past sets up an adventure that feels both exciting and tense from the start.

The pacing is strong, especially once accusations begin to surface. Dan and Sam aren’t just surviving the time period they’re trying to protect history, which adds another layer of urgency. I liked how the race against time feels constant, pushing them into tough decisions while still keeping the story readable and engaging even if you’re new to the series.

Overall, if you love time-travel plots with high stakes, historical settings, and characters who have to think quickly under pressure, this is an easy recommendation.

I’m absolutely going back to read the rest is the only logical next step!

Dan Renfrew and Samantha Cahill are going back in time again to fix a glitch in history. This time they find themselves in France in 1429, and they end up joining Joan of Arc and the French army heading toward Orleans to free the city from the English. But this time, Sam ends up in the most difficult position of being accused of being a witch. Now Dan must figure out the glitch and try to get Sam out of prison before the French monks burn Sam at the stake. This becomes the most stressful leap for Dan. Back in the modern day, once they return, Dan must deal with Victor's plan and how he now needs to help Victor succeed. I have read all the books in the series so far, and this one was a challenge to finish. It feels as if the story is just dragging on and no closer to a conclusion than what it was in the first novel.

“Ordeal at Orléans”, by Andrew Vargas, is the fifth book in his “A Jump in Time” series. In this book Dan, a 21st century teenage time traveler, and his companion, Sam, travel back to 1429 in Orléans, France, during the Siege of Orléans. Joan of Arc is leading the French army against the English. Dan and Sam need to figure out what the time glitch in history is and then a way to fix it so history doesn’t change. In past books Dan has had the historical knowledge for the time jump. This time it is Sam who has the knowledge for their success. One of Dan and Sam’s biggest challenge happens when Sam is taken into custody for witchcraft!

Everyone probably has heard of Joan of Arc, but do they have a good knowledge of her actions and activities? Mr. Varga has, again, taken a deep dive into the life and times of Joan of Arc. He’s looked into the myths and written history of the time to craft the most accurate presentation of her and her era. This book is well written. It grabs the attention of the reader and keeps it with the main story of Joan of Arc as well as an underlying story that flows through all of the books in this series. I wonder what the next historical event will be the theme of Mr. Vargas’s next book? Advanced middle school readers as well as young adult readers will enjoy this book and series.

Reading a new book in this series is like getting a new episode of a great show. Dan and co are into a new adventure; this time France with Joan of Arc. Dan and Sam are trying to fix the time glitch when Sam gets arrested for witchcraft and loses her jump device thanks to freaking Gerry and his vendetta. These stories are a great blend of fiction along with a history lesson. It’s one of my favourite things about these books. I have a great time plus I learn something, I am really curious where the Victor timeline is going and how it might resolve. I will definitely be looking out for the next book in the series. Bonus that this author is Canadian. And….the same narrator does all the books. It’s great!

Ordeal at Orleans is the fifth book in a YA historical Sci-fi adventure series and I'm still loving it. This work not only depicts another world-famous battle, but also portrays one of the most familiar female historical figures of all time. The battle itself is in less detail than previous books, but the author focuses more on the various groups and overall treatment of women during this time period. The story arc also spends more time in present day and many relationships rise and fall (let's hope the triangle is eliminated at some point in a future novel). Looking forward to the next book in the series and seriously, love the coverart!

I received this book from NetGalley for a fair review. I found it engaging, with some interesting ideas and conflicts that weren’t fully explored. There were moments that felt unrealistic, like a conversation that didn’t quite fit the context of the characters and the story.

Despite that, the book wasn’t all bad, and I enjoyed reading it enough to plan on continuing with the rest of the series. That said, the main plot didn’t progress much, and the central conflict felt largely static throughout this installment.

Found it a rather interesting concept, going back in time, fixing glitches that seem small, but make a huge change to the history of the event.

This time was set during the Hundreds Year War and the historical figure of Joan of Arc appears, and Dan (the MC) must find a way to keep her on her destined path.

Even with a bit of teen drama, it was an enjoyable read.

After book four, I could not wait for book five. When I received this book, I literally stopped my current read to start this. That’s how excited I was. The way this book ends, I will do the exact same when book six comes out.

I just love this series! Dan and Sam are such great characters and I really like their bond and how messy it is becoming in each book. I love the historical events in these books and how they are explored. I am so excited to see what comes next in this series as I do think these characters have grown so much in this book.

This book is one that I was not fully sure about as it was already 5th in the series but I found it to be very enjoyable and now I need to start back at the beginning. It was also a stand alone work and I was able to follow the series-specific insights pretty easily.

Unfortunately, the 5th installment in this series falls flat. The historical setting is one of the dullest so far, the continous jealousy/triangle has gotten old, and the action sequences were not really captivating.

This YA fantasy novel is part of a series called Jump in Time, in which teenaged Dan Renfrew and his partner Sam(antha) Cahill are time jumpers who travel into the past to fix glitches that threaten the fabric of history. I have never read any of the previous books in this series, but this book can be read as a stand alone novel.

In this installment, Dan and Sam land in 1429 France, as Joan of Arc prepares to liberate the people of Orléans from the English siege. As a big fan of Joan of Arc, I was attracted to this book for that reason. The time in medieval France was quite fascinating but too short; the rest of the novel focuses on an evil plot to take over the world, and Dan and Sam are less than willing cogs in that machine and sinister people with agendas.

Despite some flaws, the story was a page turner, and probably best suited to tweens.

This book was completely different pace to the previous books in the series it was a lot slower paced and a lot more plot heavy in the present day. There was a time jump early on but even then the present day followed Dan back in time, it wasn’t just about fixing the time glitch, it was also Dan trying to protect himself and all those that he loves.

At this point in the series it seems impossible that Dan and Sam will be able to stop Victor and his plan for world domination, it will be interesting to see what direction the author will take this.

I have loved this series and cannot wait for book six.

This was the 1st book I read in this series. It was easy to understand everything going on despite not reading the other 4. I am sure that they would also be interesting reads each with their own adventure to some time and place in the past.


The plot: This book has a brilliant concept.
We follow Dan, a time-jumper trying to save his friends and in turn the world from Victor.
In this book Dan & his time-jumping partner Sam, go back to Medival France to help Joan of Arc and the French in the war. There is a time glitch, which means something in the past has changed, so they must fix it to keep the future on track. There, they face many complications. People trying to kill them, witch accusations, bad timings.

The characters:
Dan really annoyed me. He made it sound as though Jenna was just a distraction from Sam on numerous occasions. I couldn't help but feel bad for Jenna.
Near the end of the book Sam & Jenna confront Dan about his relationships with them. Sam ends up leaving upset, and Dan doesn't go after her. Thankfully, Jenna realises that Dan didn't actually choose her. He just didn't do anything, not making a choice. Jenna leaves Dan. Thank goodness for this.
There were times when the characters' thoughts and actions didn't work well with the seriousness of the situation they were in.
I felt what happened to Sam on the time jump was not addressed properly following the ordeal.

My favourite character was Joan. I loved how she was depicted. I could see her struggles as a woman in war. It is really sad knowing how she dies 2 years after this time jump to Orleans. Prior to reading this book, I did not have much knowledge of her.

The narration: This was the 1st audiobook I have listened to in a while. Mark Sanderlin did a good job narating this. One of the background characters had a Scottish accent, I loved hearing it.

I immersive read this one and devoured it in a day. I haven’t read any of the previous books in the series but I probably will go back and read and/or listen. Even without having the foundation of the other books, it was very easy to catch up without feeling lost or overwhelmed.

Dan is a time traveler who travels to other times to make sure the historical timeline stays true. He travels to Joan of Arc times in this one to make sure 600 years of history stay on track

This book stands up pretty well in this series. Varga's writing has been consistent and enjoyable so far. This book covered a favourite part of history for me, and his details were good and true. Let's just hope for more of the same in the future.
