NY Times Bestselling author Jennifer Ashley writes historical, contemporary, and paranormal romance, historical mysteries, and urban fantasy as Jennifer Ashley, Allyson James, and Ashley Gardner.
3.5 RATING-I've gotten hooked on the Lawmen series and just finished up No Mercy over the weekend so was excited to see Slow Burn available in this anthology. Trace seemed like a great guy, who got hooked on a damsel in distress, and never looked back. Unfortunately, I didn't really like the heroine, Christie. I didn't have a problem with her in No Mercy, but in Slow Burn, she was not only selfish but was definitely TSTL. I don't want to say she ruined the story for me...but, yeah, I didn't like her. Also, for a witness in protected custody, she wasn't all that protected. Still, a good addition to this series. Wish Trace would have ended up with a more deserving heroine though.
This is a review for two of the stories in this contemporary romance collection.
Overnight Love by Nicole Edwards
I quite enjoyed this romance between Kenzie and Lucas. When Kenzie meets Lucas in a hotel bar on a blind date gone horribly wrong, there is no denying the attraction between them. I really liked both characters and they were well described with enough background to get a feel for them despite the shorter length of the story. Lucas is a handsome and determined man in his late thirties who is recovering from a failed marriage and hesitant to trust a woman again. Kenzie is a younger woman (24) who has inherited a ranch from her grandfather and is new to the area. The sexual chemistry between them is sizzling and Lucas knows that a one night stand with Kenzie isn't going to cut it for him, even though that's all she says that she wants. In truth, they find a much stronger attraction than anticipated and develop feelings for each other quickly. Their love scenes are passionate and sweet and just right for a novella length story. It's a love at first sight tale, and an enjoyable one at that. 4 stars.
Rocky Retreat by Vivian Arend
This sexy romantic novella, part of the Six Pack Ranch series is the story of Lee and Rachel. Lee's been carrying a torch for Rachel for months, but backed off when she wouldn't take him seriously because of their age difference, him being 24 and her 33. When Rachel marries another man and ends up heartbroken, he regrets that he didn't make her take him seriously. When they end up snowed in together as Rachel is coming to terms with her divorce, Lee sees his chance to make up for lost time and show her that things between them can work, if she'll give him the chance to prove it.
This was a fun, sexy, and entertaining story! Lee is a handsome, mature young man who comes across as levelheaded and knowing exactly what he wants - and he wants Rachel, not for a fling but for the long haul. Rachel is naturally reluctant, having just come out of a bad relationship but she's always been attracted to Lee despite their age difference that kept her at bay. Stuck in a snowbound cabin together, the sexual tension is present from the start of the story and the eventual love scenes between them are sweet and sexy, showcasing tender emotion and steamy heat. I loved the two of them together, and that Lee is able to convince Rachel that she needs to look past their age difference and see the determined man that he is. We get glimpses of the other characters in the series and as always, it's an enjoyable mix of camaraderie and humour between the siblings and cousins as they encourage the relationship between Rachel and Lee. A great addition to the series. 4 stars.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the collection!
Adam by Jennifer Ashley. 3 stars. Good story, but a bit slow for me.
Overnight Love by Nicole Edwards. 3.5 stars. One of the two best stories, IMO. Snowbound lovers isn't a new story, but it worked here.
The Cowboy Inherits a Bride by Cora Seton. 3.5 stars. The second story I liked. The heroine was unbearably naive, but I enjoyed the fish out of water story. Wish it had been longer, as the ending was really abrupt.
Rocky Retreat by Vivian Arend. 3 stars. I haven't read the other books in the series, but this stood alone well. Another trapped in a cabin story, and I found it a bit slow at times, but liked the older woman, younger man vibe.
Slow Burn by Cheyenne McCray. 3 stars. This had the most action of all the stories, which I appreciated, but other than the hero wearing a cowboy hat, this was in no way a cowboy story. Also, the behavior and actions of the special agents and FBI in this story were really ridiculous. Like really, really ridiculous.
I read Overnight Love by Nicole Edwards. What a sweet story of one super hot cowboy! Makes me wanna go to a small town in Texas and find myself a deep voiced hottie cowboy of my own. I just love these quickie, steamy romance novellas. Yummy!! Lol ;-)
COWBOYS LAST ALL NIGHT is a collection of five novellas by five different authors.
ADAM by Jennifer Ashley: ADAM is Book 1 of a new series called Riding Hard about the Campbell brothers. In this novella, Adam Campbell has returned to his family's home after an accident may have ended his career as a stuntman. He encounters Bailey Farrell who he knew as a teenager. Bailey and Adam had a thing in high school and the years apart have not lessened their attraction to one another. I really liked this story. It is the first in a series and there is a lot of backstory and introduction of characters that slows down the action in the story a bit. The characters, however, are fascinating. Ashley always does a great job at creating interesting families and this series seems to follow that pattern. Bailey and Adam's are obviously right for one another and the story is more about Adam's problems stemming from his accident than serious conflicts with Bailey. Rating: 4.25.
OVERNIGHT LOVE by Nicole Edwards: This novella is part of the Dead Heat Ranch series. Lucas Burch expects to be alone. His wife cheated on him and instead he dedicates himself to his ranch. MacKenzie Catlay meets Lucas when her blind date ends up being blind drunk. The attraction between the two is immediate, but Lucas knows he is no man for Kenzie. This story was just adequate to me. The setup was really good, but I didn't feel a real connection between these characters that would justify their quick resolution. I have read other novellas/books with one night relationships that were much more compelling and emotionally satisfying. This story was okay to me, but not spectacular. I haven't read anything else by this author so fans of her books might feel differently. Rating: 2.5 stars.
THE COWBOY INHERITS A BRIDE by Cora Seton: This novella is a prequel to the Cowboys of Chance Creek series. Sunshine Patterson and Cole Linden meet for the first time and discover that they have been left an inheritance of a building but they must compete against one another to determine which of them will ultimately get the building. This is the story of opposites: country boy and city girl. Sunshine intends to run a vegan restaurant in the building and Cole has an indoor rifle range. I liked this story and actually wish that it were longer. The competition between the two was funny and interesting and there were plenty of other interesting characters that fill in the edges of the story. This story is more external conflict that emotional struggle, but I thought the story was light and cute. Rating: 4 stars.
ROCKY RETREAT by Vivian Arend: This novella is part of the Six Pack Ranch series. Lee Coleman and Rachel Monroe end up stranded at a cabin together. Rachel's short lived marriage has ended because her husband is a cheater and she has come to the cabin to emotionally recover. Lee unsuccessfully tried to gain Rachel's interest before his marriage and is determined to try again. Lee is almost ten years younger than Rachel and that is why she refused him before, but she might be interested now. I enjoyed this book although I haven't read any others in the series. The younger man scenario had some interest and Lee is really a wonderful man who is determined to show Rachel how much he cares about her and not just be a rebound fling. I appreciated that these characters develop a great deal of emotional connection and it is not just sex between them. The story is satisfying. Rating: 4 stars.
SLOW BURN by Cheyenne McCray: This novella is part of the Lawmen series. Agent Trace Davidson and Christie Simpson met when Christie's husband of twenty years was arrested as being part of a cartel. A year later, Christie has returned to Arizona to testify against her ex-husband. When her life is threatened, Christie and Trace end up spending a lot of time together and their simmering attraction just increases. I thought this was a full story. I haven't read the prior books but I didn't feel them necessary. This story was complete and did not feel rushed despite the shorter length. There is a lot of action to compensate for the fact that there is not a lot of emotional conflict between the hero and heroine. I liked this one. Rating: 4 stars.
I really liked this book. Liked Adam and Bailey a lot. Loved the storyline and the sensual sex scenes. I can’t wait to read Grant’s, Carter’s, Tyler’s and Ross’s story. I liked Christina and Faith, too. I’ve read quite a few of JA’s books and love her writing. I look forward to her contemporary books. 4 stars
Overnight Love by Nicole Edwards
This book had a good story but I can’t ever see myself reading anything else from this author. If there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s an author who feels it’s necessary to use the word p*ssy to describe a woman’s privates! IMO it’s just disgusting. I liked Lucas and Kenzie. 3 stars
The Cowboy Inherits a Bride by Cora Seton I think I’ll have to pass on Ms. Seton’s story. Sunshine is a vegan and I just hate when a story is built around that. The minute Cole started to eat some beef jerky and Sunshine became upset because “that stick of gunk had once had a heart and lungs and feelings,” I knew I was through. And then after he took a bite she felt faint? I think that’s a little extreme. 2 stars
Rocky Retreat by Vivian Arend Another author I will never read again because she feels the need to use disgusting words to describe a woman’s body parts. I can read anything they call a man’s parts but p*ssy or c*nt for a woman just repulses me. 2 stars
Slow Burn by Cheyenne McCray This was really my favorite of all five stories. There was so much excitement, murder, mayhem, love, sex. It had everything. Loved Trace and Christie, wonderful twosome. Also liked the secondary characters: Natasha, Belle, Dylan and Stillwater. And I just loved what happened that jerk Salvatore. This is my first book by CM but I will definitely see what else she has to offer. 5 stars
Good selection here. The prequel to the Cowboys of Chance Creek series, one of a Canadian Western series, a novella in the Lawmen series, and two others. The only thread tying them together is the rugged and sexy cowboy who meets the only woman for him.
The first story, by Jennifer Ashley, concerns a cowboy who has given up his stunt career in Hollywood after a devastating accident that killed a good friend. Overnight Love deals with a wrong-place wrong-time blind date that ends up better than either of the two could imagine - and he wasn't even the date! They describe their story as not "love at first sight" but Overnight Love. Cute one.
Rocky Retreat is part of the Six-Pack Ranch series and involves a secret crush and the woman who is too cautious to get involved with this younger man. The Cowboy Inherits A Bride is a typical Cora Seton: a woman ends up i Chance Creek under a barely believable circumstance - and makes the story and the romance work.
Slow Burn is a novella of the Lawmen series by Cheyenne McCray. Having read the first two entries of the series, I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Christie Simpson is in hiding to escape from her murderous cartel husband. She returns to Bisbee, Arizona for the birth of a friend's baby without letting anyone know. She unknowingly sets into motion a number of adventures, most of which are designed to kill her. Trace Davidson is a DHS agent who met Christie earlier (see No Mercy). He hasn't forgotten her and is happy to be part of her protection, protocol or not. Christie has sworn not to get involved with men since she made such a mistake with her former marriage. However, Trace makes himself indispensable, as well as irresistible. Best one.
Cowboys Last All Night is one hot bundle. Five talented authors bring us five enjoyable reads that will keep us entertained. All five stories are quick novella's that are must reads. After reading the whole set, I would probably say my favorite is from Vivian Arend and her story Rocky Retreat.
In Rocky Retreat we get learn about Lee Coleman and Rachel Malone. Now, Lee has been wanting Rachel for awhile and continued to ask her out but she always turned him down due to his age. Lady is crazy to turn down a Coleman....just saying. Rachel then gets married but the marriage is not a happy one. Her husband doesn't understand the term faithful. The thing I loved most about Rachel, was that she divorced him. She didn't try to make excuses for him or forgive him....she left him. I love that. So Rachel heads to a cabin to make sense of things and come to terms with the end of her marriage, but finds herself stuck in the middle of a snowstorm...now don't feel to bad for her, cause Lee shows up at the right time. Lee is definitely a characters who embodies the term hero. He's always had a thing for her, but shows her that he cares for her by not immediately sexing her up. He wants to date her and shows her how much he cares. Don't worry...there will be sexy times and they will be HOT! Another great read by Vivian Arend and I can't wait to read more!
All five books are worth the read, not just Rocky Retreat. It's just my personal favorite, but I invite each of you to find out which story you prefer.
This box set is a collab by 5 authors, I bought it some years ago wanting to read new voices (to me) in romance and until now finished reading it. Only one author really clicked, the rest have unsympathetic female leads, very hard to spot for them when you don't feel empathy.
Adam - Jennifer Ashley 5 stars. I loved this story. What a great start to a new series. Even though Adam and Bailey have a history, it was still a somewhat slow build in rekindling the fire. I loved how she pushed him to overcome his fears and get back in the saddle. Really looking forward to reading more about this family of cowboys!
Overnight Love - Nicole Edwards 2 stars. I didn't care for Lucas at all. I thought he was wishy washy and still seemed to be hung up on his ex. He wasn't at all what I think of in a cowboy. Not near the alpha I expected.
The Cowboy Inherits A Bride - Cora Seton 2.5 stars. The title didn't seem to fit the story. Sure, Cole and Sunshine had to live together and work together. But he didn't inherit a bride. The story was okay. There were some cute and funny parts, not enough steam.
Rocky Retreat - Vivian Arend 3 stars. Super sweet love story. I liked that Lee took it slow but made it clear that he'd wanted this for a long time. Getting snowed in gave Rachel the opportunity to see what an upstanding guy Lee was.
Slow Burn - Cheyanne McCray 3.5 stars. This was a good romantic suspense that didn't feel rushed. Even though the characters were first introduced in a previous book, there was enough background given to feel like I was up to speed. Trace and Christie made a cute couple and I loved that he felt drawn to protect her and keep her safe.
I really enjoyed most of these stories. they aren't the deepest, best stories I've ever read, but they are good and sexy. some lack in real conflict, but others are great short works. There's only so much you can pack into 100 pages or fewer.
the fifth one, with the woman in protective custody, though, I couldn't even finish. Does everyone know what TSTL stands for? It stands for a young woman who is sorta in hiding from her ex, who is member of a drug cartel. She's the only witness who can put him away for good. So of course she doesn't accept any help from the FBI, which is trying to keep her alive. So she hops on a plane -using her real name, arranging things via the same email she had when married - and flies to see her best friends, whom the ex already tried to kill. I stopped reading after she got shot. do they kidnap the friends with their baby? that's the only thing I want to know.
Adam is a big-time stunt man in Hollywood until a stunt goes wrong and his best friend dies. badly injured himself, Adam returns to his family's ranch in Texas where his brothers train stunt horses.
Before he left town straight after graduating Adam was hot and heavy with Bailey, he doesn't know that she is back, after a nasty divorce, working on the ranch as a horse wrangler.
Can two people who were once in love find that again? Or will Adam go back to LA once he heals?
I usually read Jennifer Ashley's shifter books (and I'm not overly fond of romances starring cowboys) so this was a change for me but I thought it was pretty good. Very much a feel good kind of story, no huge conflict or evil villains. On the strength of this I may well get the other books.
Worth the 90 pence for the anthology all by itself.
OK, so I didn't read any of the others because cowboys aren't really my thing ...
I liked all the stories in this book. Some more than others but all were good stories.
ADAM by Jennifer Ashley is the first book in her new series "Riding Hard". Liked it enough that I'm working on getting the other stories in this series.
OVERNIGHT LOVE by Nicole Edwards is part of her "Dead Heat Ranch" series. I have read others of her books that I didn't like but I did like this story.
THE COWBOY INHERITS A BRIDE by Cora Seton is a prequel to her "Cowboys of Chance Creek" series. Now I'm going to have to look into this series since I liked it so much!
ROCKY RETREAT by Vivian Arend is part of her "Six Pack Ranch" series world. Really, really like this one.
SLOW BURN by Cheyenne McCray is part of her "Lawmen" series. You can read this one as a standalone but I think it would be better to read it in order in the series.
I got this for my interest in Jennifer Ashley's story. She's one of my favorite authors and is embarking on a contemporary romance series which is a first for her. I liked it. The oldest in a family of men living on a ranch, who happen to specialize in stunt training. Adam has come home to recuperate after his last stunt ended up hurting him and killing his partner. He meets up with a woman who helped him years ago pass his classes in order to graduate high school. Bailey now works at the ranch after her divorce and is also recuperating from feeling betrayed in the relationship. This was a good start in introducing the men in the family and the supporting characters. She pulled me in with just enough of a hook to draw me back to find out about how things will go with Grant and Carter. Read the others and they were good as well. very easy reading and good stories.
I wish I could read every novella but I had to sneak in Overnight Love already. So hopefully I will get the rest soon.
I have read the Dead Heat Series and loved it! This was a short, sweet and sexy addition to the series. When MacKenzie walked into the local bar for a blind date she did expect what would happen next. It wasn't the best night but it was a start to something new and exciting.
Two strangers...one crazy night equals big changes for MacKenzie and Lucas.
Quotes:
"Darlin', keep lookin' t me like that and I'm going to kiss you again."
They were both silent for a moment, and Lucas knew he needed to go. He needed to put a little distance between himself and this little wildcat.
Such a great book. Love modern cowboy, small town ranch setting. Made me want to move right in with them. Adam and Bailey were such a great couple. Plenty of angst and fun and "fall in love" sexiness. First book I have every read by Jennifer Ashley and am so excited that I found her at the start of this series. Looking forward to each Campbell brother's story.
"Families. You gotta love'em, but at the same time they drive you bat-shit crazy."
OVERNIGHT LOVE by Nicole Edwards Short, sweet, sexy, loved it!!!!
Overnight Love- Nicole Edwards This was such a great read. Once I started reading it, I was hooked and needed to know what was going to happen next. The story is fantastic and you cannot help but fall in love with these characters. I am really looking forward to reading more by this amazing author.
Slow Burn- cheyenne McCray This is another amazing author who I have been reading for a while. This story moved along at a great pace, has amazing characters and a story that wont let you down.
The only story that was a keeper for me was Jennifer Ashley's from her new series Riding Hard - I would give 3.5 stars. First book I have read of hers that is not a historical - will keep an eye out for the rest of the series.
I would rate 3 stars for Vivian Arend story Rocky Retreat in her Six Pack Ranch series.
I would only rate the other three stories 2 stars and would toast them from my e-library.
Each of these stories was really well written with great characters that you just couldn't help but enjoy and root for. It's also great that each story is very different from the previous one. As I finished one I almost missed the hero and heroine until I met the newest ones, and then I loved them too. Perfect reading for cold, rainy winter days spent in front of the fireplace - or for that matter, stretched out on the beach watching the waves role.
I enjoyed reading this book. I found that I wanted to read more by the authors and several at least are prequels to series or part of a series. They were all pretty good, the last story was a little ho hum starting out but it improved. The cowboy inherits a bride was a little different and I wasn't overly fond of Cole, the male main character. He acted very immature in the story but it even turned out OK. Vivian Arend was my favorite, I love her Six Pack Ranch series.
I bought this book for Jennifer Ashley's Adam. It was fantastic! I'm so looking forward to the rest in the series. Stories 2 & 3 weren't that great, but 4 was pretty good. The last story about Trace and Christie was also fantastic. I plan to read the rest in that series.
I enjoyed this book set....come on who doesn't like a sexy cowboy or two. Nicole Edwards doesn't disappoint with her book in the Dead Heat series about Lucas and MacKenzie. short novella but hit as heck. My favorite in this set,"Riding Hard" introduced me to a new author, Jennifer Ashley. you can't go wrong with this set. like the sing says...save a horse, ride a cowboy!!
This was a great box set. Most of the stories were so good I went and download others from the series. Most of them have links to the first books in their series which are free so I ended up reading 8 or 9 books for the price of this box set! Individual reviews for these books will be found under the book's title.
Cowboys make everything better and safe. Each book was equally good. From the first sweet story to the last suspenseful story. Who wouldn't want a hot cowboy as their significant other.
Finished "Overnight Love" connected to Dead Heat Ranch series by Nicole Edwards. A fun story of Lucus & Kenize. Love the idea of overnight love. A fun read to go with Nicole's series.
Loved every one of the books in this set. There were some of my favorite authors and some I never heard of who are now on my list of authors to look for. These stories of the big strong hero's who make women happy are well worth reading.
Excellent collection of books. Highly recommend these books to everyone. Excellent story lines that kept your interest and attention making them hard to put down.
I loved Nicole's short novella. The only downside is that it was too short! I know that is what a novella is but there in lies the problem...you fall in love with Nicole's characters and always want more!
