Blood of the Veil

Rate this book
Abducted to another world, thrown into a magical academy, bonded to a vampire, rooming with an incubus, fake dating an angel, and despised by a dragon.

I bring the wrong guy home for a one-night stand and the next day I’m swept off to a mystical world surrounded by beautiful fae beings, because apparently… I’m one of them.

Only I know nothing of this world, so it doesn’t take me long to make enemies of a stuck-up princess and get mate-bonded to a vampire… only he’s not a vampire, he’s a shifter… or something… I don’t know, I’m new here.

Oh, and that guy from the one-night stand, turns out he’s an incubus… and my new roommate, not to mention my assigned TA in class. Awkward!

Things only get more complicated when that princess (who’s appointed herself my arch nemesis) sends one of her bodyguards (an angel no less) to spy on me by pretending to be my boyfriend.

And did I mention the dragon-shifter? The one who may be sexy AF, but who seems to hate my guts for some reason?

This place is messed up. I’ll be lucky to make it through my first week alive.

It was a fun story and it does leave me curious to what is coming next. I do feel like it was a bit on the rushed side. I wanted to enjoy the story more, but I did find that I had issues with remembering the plot line as the story felt like it mostly consisted of smut. Which is not what I was expecting from the story honestly. I don't have an issue with smut (if you look at the books I read....) but I definitely wanted a lot more plot and to not be as confused. I did have a personal issue with the FMC in this one... Outside of that the other issue I found with the FMC is she makes a remark about how people act like she's sleeping with someone new every day or something along those lines, but she is. She literally is sleeping with several guys. Now do I have an issue with that per say? No. I live off of reverse harem and why choose books. But she's so whiney about it and she's so irritated that the guys are seeing this. Own up to it. Everyone in this book needs to just talk to each other and figure out if there are bonds or what is so special.

I do think that unfortunately the author is probably not one best suited for me as she seems to rapidly release books every month and it comes off as books seeming rushed. I do think that others may enjoy the book if they are just looking for something that is fun, fast paced and definitely has a lot of smut with several guys and some drama.

Blood of the Veil by Clara Wils was… okay. As a first book in a series, it has potential, but it really needed more development. The pacing is extremely choppy; the story jumps from moment to moment so quickly that it often feels like whole sections are missing. A bit more depth and “flesh” would’ve gone a long way in making the plot feel complete instead of rushed.

The MMCs were hit or miss. A few of them weren’t terrible, but none were particularly memorable. We’re given almost nothing about them beyond their looks, which makes it hard to care about them as characters. Attraction alone isn’t enough to build investment, especially in a harem-style story.

Unfortunately, the FMC was my biggest issue. She’s honestly hard to like - rude to her 'mates', messy in her relationships, and somehow both a doormat and a jerk at the same time. Her internal monologue is frustrating, especially when she repeatedly just “goes along with” bullies who are actively trying to kill her and her mates/friends. It made no sense and pulled me out of the story. I wasn’t a fan of her.

The author also tried to be a little too clever with names. I’m all for unique naming, but when nearly every character (besides the FMC) has a name that’s hard to pronounce, it becomes distracting instead of immersive. Constantly stumbling over names really took away from the flow of the story.

Finally - and this was a big one - the author has done readers no favors by releasing the titles and blurbs for all upcoming books complete with major spoilers. At this point, I genuinely don’t feel the need to continue the series because the author already spoiled her own ending and future harem members. It’s such a shame, because spacing out blurbs book by book would’ve kept some mystery and excitement alive.

Overall, not terrible, but not great either. With better pacing, stronger character development, and fewer self-inflicted spoilers, this series could’ve been much more enjoyable.

Veilblood Academy

Hard to review. First in series. Pnr, reverse harem?, academy, hidden heritage, evil authorities. Izzy was raised as a human in the foster system. She has a one night stand and he reports her to the paranormal authority, so she is brought to their realm to study. Spoilers: early on it's revealed to the reader that Izzy is the long lost heir to the Elf throne. It's kept secret. The current regent is evil as is her student daughter who hates Izzy. Izzy's character is hard to like. She has individual sexual encounters with various men uncaring about their feelings. The social system is power based with Elves as the most powerful and abusive. The underclasses are treated as servants and slaves. From the beginning Izzy hates the society and goes about Willy nilly angering powerful people. This is strange because she doesn't know she is the lost princess and the story doesn't flow. The ending of this volume shows plot development, so I'll probably continue. There are several misused words, but it's punctuated correctly.

This was such an enjoyable, fast read — I flew through it! The worldbuilding was great, with everything from dragons, elves, and shifters, to angels and demons and everything in between. I loved the characters, especially the guys who were average or lower on the social scale, which felt refreshingly different from the usual overpowered fantasy RH heroes. Overall, it’s absolutely worth the read.

The plot was a little rushed and fast paced, plus a lot of info dumping going on- but I did appreciate that the guys in the harem were all well defined (meaning I got a clear image of them-their voices, personalities, and motivations didn't run together)

I did like Izzy as well, but I wish we got a bit more from her other than horny moments and fear of commitment. But might read on to see how the story goes after the big reveal, and how her powers will grow.

There was a lot of steam in this book! A. LOT! Sometimes it seemed to dominate, but be patient! There is a good story here! Just when the action seems to ramp up and things start sliding into place…comes the cliffhanger! Needless to say to say I’m itching to get my hands on the next book!.

Great Premise

I loved this premise and love how the relationships were built. It also subverted a lot of common tropes but definitely fell into some. I do think this needs to go through another round of editing for a lot of grammatical mistakes and forgotten or added punctuation. I will be keeping up with this story since it's very compelling.

A nymph in the human realm

She doesn't know she is a nymph. All she knows is she is an orphan. Rook comes to the bar she works in and walks her home. He notices changes in her appearance and reports her which leads to her kidnapping. She shows signs of being supernatural and is forced to stay at the academy.

It’s amazing Izzy has so much strength. And I’m fascinated how the story is unveiling with all the dynamics of the characters coming into play. Sandrea is really awful and makes the perfect villain. Looming forward to book 3.

This is pretty much smut with a little bit of plot. For this one, I would have liked more plot. I needed more world building. I finished it, but I'm not sure I'll be going on with the rest of the series.

Also there's a ton of typos in this book...
