Winds of Change: Book1: In the Line of Fire

Rate this book
London, 1914. As the world erupts into war, two lives will be forever changed by courage, duty, and an impossible love.
Margaret Ashworth has fought every step of the way to become a doctor in a man's world. When the Great War begins, she sees her chance to prove herself where it matters most—on the battlefields of France, saving lives others have written off as lost.
Tom Fitzgerald knows the narrow streets of London's East End like the back of his calloused hands. A dockworker turned stretcher bearer, he carries the wounded from no-man's-land with quiet determination, haunted by the friends he couldn't save.
When their paths cross at a field hospital behind the Western Front, Margaret and Tom discover that the greatest battles aren't always fought with bullets and shells. She's everything he never dared dream of—brilliant, fearless, utterly out of his reach. He's everything she never expected to want—steady, gentle, and completely wrong for a woman of her station.
As the war rages around them and the casualties mount, Margaret and Tom must navigate not only the horrors of the trenches but the rigid boundaries of a society that would never accept their love. In a world where tomorrow is never guaranteed, will they find the courage to fight for something more than just survival?
From the suffragette meetings of London to the mud-soaked hospitals of the Somme, Winds of In the Line of Fire is a sweeping tale of love, sacrifice, and the extraordinary ordinary people who changed the course of history.

In the Line of Fire by Valerie Anne Hudson is an excellent work of historical fiction. I enjoyed it so much that the best word I can use to describe it is “fantastic”. It is definitely a solid 5 star read. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. The story begins in London at the beginning of World War 1 and moves to field hospitals in the battlefields of France. The novel follows the fortunes of Margaret, a female doctor, a rarity in those days. She behaves with dignity when her competence is questioned by male colleagues and patients alike. She resists the advances of a male colleague. In the French field hospital, her path crosses with Tom, a working-class man who enlisted as a stretcher bearer.
Hudson has assembled an array of relatable and believable characters. Margaret is portrayed as a no-nonsense, determined character. The male doctors have the starchiness and aloofness one expects of English professionals of the era. The pacing is perfect. What sets this author’s work apart is her ability to vividly and realistically describe places and events and create tension and conflict by using exactly the right words.(and not too many of them)
This book is much more than a story of adventure and romance. Rather, it speaks of the changes made to the fabric of society by World War One. This is an outstanding work of historical fiction. Read it. You will not regret it

I feel like I was by Margaret’s side, her struggles felt real with a rollercoaster for her to climb in life. It’s well written and worth a read.

Blast from the past

At first I thought, oh, another book with multiple viewpoints in the first person, but I quickly found myself engaged in the story, and it turned into a fascinating read for me. I loved seeing things from the perspective of both a soldier in the war, And also, the young woman who aspires to be a doctor. It's always fun to see what things might have been like back then. Often their world is so much different from the world that we live in right now, but then again, often I can see threads that connect us to our past, like how someone's experiences can totally change them, while to somebody else, they might not even realize what is truly going on. I also love that this was a clean read, yes there was violence and gore to a degree but, there was no profanity or sexual content. I would definitely recommend this book.

Set against the chaos and heartbreak of World War I, this story pulled me in from the very first pages. The historical detail feels rich and immersive, placing the reader right alongside the characters as they navigate both the brutality of war and the quiet, deeply personal struggles that come with it.

Margaret is a compelling and admirable protagonist. Her determination to succeed in a world that constantly questions her worth is inspiring, and her work as a doctor on the front lines is portrayed with realism and respect. Tom is equally memorable. His quiet strength, compassion, and sense of duty make him easy to root for, especially as he carries both the wounded and the weight of his own losses.

The romance unfolds naturally and with restraint, shaped by class divisions, societal expectations, and the ever-present threat of loss. What makes their connection so powerful is its subtlety. Their relationship grows in moments of kindness, understanding, and shared fear rather than dramatic gestures.

The author does an excellent job balancing the emotional intensity of war with moments of tenderness and hope. The setting, from London to the Somme, feels vivid and thoughtfully researched, adding depth to every scene.

I truly enjoyed this story and became invested in the characters and their journey. I am very much looking forward to continuing the series and seeing where their story leads in book two.

Thus book follows Margaret, a young woman who wants to be a doctor right on the cusp of the start of WW1. It alternates between her POV and Tom (a young enlisted man). I loved every minute of it. I enjoyed how it showed her well off family complaining about rationing and having to adapt, how they just expected her to get married but she outshines them all, and I really hope Tom comes back in book two.

Honestly even if you aren't a fan if historical fiction this feels so much deeper then that label gives it. Its a coming of age, self discovery, survival, and mayne even a slow burn love story. 100% would recommend.

strong>A WWI Romance That Truly Resonates

A hidden gem of a novel. Winds of Change is a gentle yet powerful, character-driven love story set during World War I. The war is portrayed realistically, without being overwhelming.

Margaret and Tom meet while working in a field hospital in France. From opposite ends of society, their shared experiences change them so deeply that they become closer to each other than to their former peers.

The supporting characters are vivid and engaging, and the emotional growth of the main characters is just as compelling as the plot itself. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be starting the next one immediately.

Valerie Anne Hudson’s novel Winds of Change is a work of historical fiction set during the First World War. The story is shaped around Margaret, who succeeds in becoming a doctor in a male-dominated world, and Tom, a stretcher bearer from the working class. Hudson’s simple and emotional narrative offers an effective and immersive experience alongside the cold face of war and social pressures. I think readers who enjoy stories with a strong historical background balanced with romantic elements will definitely like this work.

Love in War

Line of Fire is exactly as it sounds. Every single paragraph an independent fire among a full blaze. The development of each character as they changed and adjusted to the war was creatively written. They drew you into the story with the challenges of the war and the true love between two people. Then it ended with a cliffhanger leaving one to wonder what could happen next.

Very enjoyable read!!

This was a very well written and interesting book. It told about WWI and the lives of people affected by the war. It told of the sacrifices and strength of the people and those who served their countries. It was also about women's rights and a love story that you hope will continue in another book? Very enjoyable and heart touching book!!
