Neve Cottrell is an author of contemporary romance novels. Long Way Home is the first book in her series about the residents of Mangrove Island. Neve began weaving tales as soon as she could talk, walking away with the coveted “Best Storyteller” award in preschool and she’s been writing ever since. When she’s not crafting sexy heartthrobs and happily-ever-afters, she can be found indulging her need for reality TV and wistfully flipping through home and garden magazines. Neve lives near the beach with her family.

It was great to be back in Mangrove Island and it’s up there as one of my favorite places to visit along with Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold, Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor or Sherryl Woods, Chesapeake Shores! This is the third book in the series that I’ve been lucky to not only read but review and they only keep getting better.
Once again the residents of Mangrove Island are front and center and they don’t disappoint. It was great to be reunited with those I’ve met in books one and two in the series, Long Way Home and Far From Home, respectively and the story feels right from the beginning in that it picked up where we left off and held my interest from beginning to end so much that I didn’t want to put it down and was able to read it in one day. This is Eric and Courtney’s story, through and through, and oh what a story it is.
Eric and Courtney know of each other before actually meeting due to their connection to her family’s hotel on the island, The Pink Palm, but don’t know who the other is when they do actually meet for the first time. That let them be themselves – Eric, the uptight millionaire businessman, and Courtney, the new owner of the hotel after her father’s recent death. And what fun it was to watch their meeting especially with their immediate chemistry and them getting to know each other which was at times playful and other times pure agony – at least from Eric’s perspective. Courtney being herself draws Eric out of his shell to be less uptight, dress more casually and have fun plus shows that she gets him time and time again – like no one ever has before. How she handles herself in what should be difficult circumstances only shows Eric the real woman she is and that it’s not an act like his ex-wife would put on. The interactions between the characters were real as was the feeling of caring and support they gave each other. There were locals, Island hangouts and businesses, the hotel, family, friends, the beach and other locations, sadness, fear, concern, tears, laughter and smiles, romance and love along with lots of loving. Watching how good they were for each other was heartwarming and endearing. There was closure, a sweet happily ever after, but enough loose ends to make me want to read the next book in the series, Heart of the Home, immediately!
Cottrell is an author that is fast becoming one of my favorites and I look forward to reading her books for many years to come! I for one am hoping that there are many more books in this series since there are so many others on the island that need their story told – hint, hint!
Favorite Quote: Courtney stared in disbelief. Men like Eric didn’t take vacations or offer their expertise for free. This was a big deal and she knew it. “I’m flattered.”
Uptight business man is swept off his feet by free spirit former actress turned hotelier. Not a new concept but one that plays well. Introduce a Grey's Anatomy relationship start like Meredith and Derek and the novel is off and running.
The story continues directly from events in the previous book. So while it could be stand alone the reader would lose a lot of the depth given to the secondary characters and setting by not having read the previous stories.
Courtney is beautiful, carefree and racked with guilt. Her need to succeed and make her parents proud drives a large part of her character. I really liked that when given an opportunity to be a bitch she chooses to take the higher road. She "kills with kindness" but does feel genuine sorrow for the person she is forced to confront. It was nice to see a female character not fall into petty cattiness.
Eric is rich, crippled with emotional baggage and handsome. Because the story was predictable Eric felt pretty one note but I liked what Cottrell was trying to achieve.
Though I am starting to feel like Cottrell does not have the best relationship with her parents. In every book there is a parental relationship that is distanced from a character. This relationship hovers in the back ground, a familial phantom, but never gets resolved. Or in this case even confronted. It leaves me feeling like the story is unfinished.
Wonderful, fulfilling read. I loved the way the author introduced new characters, foreshadowing the plot of the other novels in theis series. But this novel was a joy to read. Eric and Courtney are bold, vibrant and well balanced characters, devloped in such a way that the reader empathizes with Eric and roots for Courtney. Although it is a stand alone HEA novel, the book is written in such a way, that unlike her perious titles in this series, everyone from Mangrove Island gets involved here. We meet main characters from perious novels, we are intorduced to main characters from upcoming novels and the plot just works. Ten Stars!
After coming back home to run family business she definitely gets more than she bargained for. He's there for business but finds the perfect place. Cozy read with heat. Great series
