When Elle Hawthorne inherits her grandmother's Victorian estate, she doesn't expect to fall through a crack in reality.
Trapped in dying Wynmire, Elle bears the Root-marks her grandmother once carried—golden vines spreading across her skin with uncontrollable power. Every faction wants to use her to save or dominate the realm.
Her only protection: Kaelren, the failed prince whose corrupted body bears the scars of trying to claim her power. As Elle's marks spread and her humanity dissolves, she must choose: become destiny's weapon, or forge her own path, even if it costs everything.
Dark romantic fantasy where Alice in Wonderland meets The Cruel Prince.
J.K. Ross is an avid reader and unapologetic book lover with a deep passion for fantasy worlds and storytelling. When she’s not writing, she’s chasing wanderlust—having explored over ten countries in recent years, always in search of places that feel plucked from a storybook. Europe, with its fairytale charm, continues to inspire her imagination—especially Ireland, which she swears is a real-life fairy garden.
She lives in Arkansas with her husband and two children, where her coworkers include a very professional Goldendoodle named Ranger and a less-than-professional Maine Coon known as Grand Duchess Freya. Together, they make sure every writing session is filled with magic, mayhem, and maybe a bit of mischief.
Thank you in advance to all who have taken the time to read A Throne in Bloom. It means more than you know, and all my love goes out to each and every one of you! I hope you have enjoyed Wynmire and all the magic it has to offer, including Elle, Kaelren, and the whole crew! Much love - J.K. Ross
I got an incredible chance to read this as an ARC reader, so all opinions and thoughts on this review is my own. I came across this book via TikTok so I was intrigued first by the title and description. However, as soon as I came across the side character who helps the FMC & MMC along the way I was IMMEDIATELY hooked! I know FMC & MMC are important but when an author has a side character who is 1. Sarcastic, 2. Professional Chaos Enabler, 3. Age: Eternal & Fabulous, 4. Runs on drama & Nectar & 5. MOTTO: If it sparkles or explodes, I approve! LIKE OMG this is going to be just absolutely great to read to see how the side character helps out. lol.
When you start reading, I was immediately hooked on the fact that there is an ARKANSAS reference in the story because of course that's very relevant to the state I live in. Also, the FMC is definitely true to her character traits that the author has created, chooses her own fate but still chooses to love over anything else. The story doesn't start slow at first, just a little bit but within a chapter it picks up DRASTICALLY and throws you in the story. As the FMC & MMC go on their adventures you see how much they really learn to care for one another and there is TRULY slow burn obsession with those two. Once a grumpy and selfish type MMC is changed and would definitely burn the world and do everything, yet ANYTHING to keep ELLE safe. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in 2 days it was incredibly good.
Here are some quotes I just laughed and enjoyed reading (mostly Peeble); -"Oh, I went insane centuries ago. It's quite liberating once you get used to it"-Peeble -"Thanks for the psychoanalysis, Dr Brooding"-Elle -"Back in Arkansas, the worst danger was mosquito bites and the occasional tornado warning. Here, even the air wants to kill me"-Elle (this was just too funny and QUITE accurate) -"I'm a beetle. Terrible puns are my only joy". -Peeble -"That's the spirit!" "Embrace the inevitable doom with style"-Peeble -This is definitely going to end badly. Which means it'll be entertaining. Carry on!"-Peeble -"Just give me one more minute where you're mine and I'm yours and the world can burn for all I care"-Kaelren -"I'll wait, however long it takes."-Kaelren
Truly one of a kind book and even after sixteen times of meeting again over and over again they still managed to find themselves but, in the end, I was emotionally not ready for the roller coaster ride for Elle and Kaelren. I will be extremely sad if book 2 isn't made because I really want to read the rest of the story especially after that cliffhanger that J. K Ross wrote.
This is such a cute book cover design! The word building, pacing and plot flow beautifully the entire book! Get ready to cozy up and read the book in one sitting (or two if need be!)
Elle has inherited her Grandma Jo's house. Her grandma's garden was withered, but Elle could swear the elm tree that had always been a mystery, was more than just a tree. She started to believe the house and garden were happy she was there.
Elle finds out she has inherited power through her bloodline. She was born between two worlds. Kaelren is a failed prince who promised Jo he would protect anything that went through the door to his realm. Elle will either save the realm or destroy it. She wasn't meant to have the marks of magic, so she has to learn what to do with them.
Don't all FMCs deserve a beetle who talks to them? Elle has a cosmic beetle buddy, Peeble who helps her and brings comedic relief, although the whole book is full of banter! Peeble is hilarious! The camaraderie makes you want to jump into the story and be included!
I appreciate how this realm is different from realms we typically read about in other books. It's refreshing to see new and creative ideas in stories. J.K.'s vivid imagination takes us to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as a romantasy book, where everything comes to life and we are swept away into their realm and don't want to leave! Ever!
"Something's always coming. The question is whether we're ready when it arrives." "... Sometimes you have to bleed to grow stronger." I love how characters in books really make you think about things in your own life.
"...I finally understood that nothing grows without being tended. Not plants. Not love. Not even yourself." "You can't control something that refuses to fit inside your definitions." You need to take care of yourself in order to grow.
"Sometimes you have to become the monster to save what you love."
"My anchor. My lighthouse."
"Find me in the spaces between seconds. I'll be in all the moments we should have had."
This book is filled with remarkable quotes that you need to read to appreciate yourself. It is an enchanting and immsersive experience, captivating from start to finish!
Wow! There are unexpected twists and turns that took me by surprise!! I don't want to spoil anything, so make sure to put this on your TBR! Ahhhhh! This book is a stunning read and brought me joy. The ending leaves me wanting to read book 2 right now to see what happens next! I loved it and I highly recommend!
Thank you J.K. Ross and BookFunnel for the eArc. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
“Whatever you become, wherever you end up, I’ll find you. And if you can’t find your way back, I’ll come looking. I’ll tear apart every moment between us until I find you.”
I did enjoy A Throne in Bloom. I want a second book right now because why did you do that to me at the end?! 😔
If you enjoy slower paced books and like to take your time while reading, you’ll probably do great with this book! If you like a bit of a faster paced story, like I do, then it might be a bit of a struggle to get through, but trust me, it’s worth it!
If you love funny and sarcastic side characters, then prepare to meet Peeble! I loved Peeble 😂 . For example, here’s a Peeble quote: “Sure. And I'm not devastatingly gorgeous for an insect. We're both liars, let's move on.”
I loved the development in Elle’s and Kaelren’s relationship. Kaelren went from the no-bullshit, brooding MMC to a man ready to burn down the world for her. Elle sacrificed everything for him. And it is spicy 🌶️, so be prepared! 🫣
“‘I’ve lived hundreds of years, and I have never—‘ He pressed his forehead to mine, breathing hard. ‘I have never felt like this. Never wanted someone the way I want you. It’s not the bond, it’s not the prophecy, it’s not anything except you.’”
Thank you J.K. Ross for the opportunity to read this book!
From the very first chapter, this story pulled me in with its fresh world-building, descriptive writing and unique magic system. The book opens with Elle at her grandmother’s house, navigating heartbreak, loss, and major life changes—only to be swept into an entirely new realm filled with unfamiliar faces and one delightfully chaotic talking beetle named Peeble.
Wynmire is a vivid, imaginative world, and watching Elle discover her abilities and her connection to her grandmother’s past was one of my favorite parts. The story balances mystery, magic, and character growth “Well, that was almost sincere at the end there. Character growth, - Peeble, while introducing a wonderfully broody love interest “It’s an art form with him. Proffessional-level brooding, Sometimes I think he practices in the mirror.” -Eltrien, who adds just the right amount of tension.
This book has everything I love in a fantasy romance: an intriguing magic system, memorable characters (Peeble absolutely steals scenes), slow-building romance, and plenty of adventure. I’m already excited for the second book coming next year.
A Throne in Bloom was a wild, unpredictable, confusing at times ride but fun.
Our FMC is thrust into a world she knows nothing about so the first 25-30% is really getting the reader semi looped in to what is happening. It’s a lot of story and world building right away, I found myself getting info overloaded but was able to get up to speed. The world itself if very interactive and I liked the idea that everything is alive.
The FMC is very resilient and I liked that she wasn’t ever a damsel in distress. Plus she has a cute little talking beetle sidekick.
The FMC is your dark and brooding type. Some of his dialogue with the FMC was repetitive which grated on me a bit. Their relationship does develop and I found I liked them more in the end.
Great side characters, I really enjoyed the glimpses into their backstory and their parts of the book a lot. And Kevin, I loved Kevin.
Lots of twists towards the ending, so I’ll be interested to see what book 2 holds. Thank you for the author for the ARC!
Where do I even begin! First off, the characters are easily relatable. FMC isn’t afraid to say what on her mind even when going through the worst things imaginable. The MMC is a hard headed male who slowly opens up to FMC and falls head over heels- he won’t just kill for her but destroy everything in his path to protect her… literally 🥵
Side characters just add to this story! Bryx had me laughing and eager for more!
The details within the story, the beginning with the Dr Pepper😅- going through the different realms- the spice scenes- even action scenes- every single page had details that made you feel like you were in the story!
This is a slow burn but definitely worth the burn 🔥 🥵
Thank you J.K. Ross for the opportunity to be one of your arc readers!
Oh this book!! I had the privilege of ARC reading A Throne in Bloom and let me just say I was hooked from the beginning. The world building, the details, the twist.. so good! There were slight misspellings/repeat paragraphs, but all can be fixed so easily and come release day I’ll be ready for a reread, and hopefully book 2!!
I have to say, I didn't end up finishing this one as just couldn't get into it, so I can't give it a proper star rating. The writing and dialogue was repetitive and some things just didn't make sense no matter how far I read. BUT that doesn't mean its not for others! It is fast paced (almost too fast paced imo, could use SOME filler and descriptor) with a morally grey MMC 🤗💕
A Throne in Bloom is a warm, magical romantic fantasy that brings you into a world where truly everything is alive. When Elle, a fierce but vulnerable human, crosses paths with Kaelren, a powerful and enigmatic being from an different realm, the two are forced into an unexpected alliance. What begins as a reluctant partnership unfolds into a deeply emotional connection, set against a force who doesn’t want them to succeed. In this wonderful book they will be exposed to political danger, ancient magic, and a world that seems to breathe, whisper, judge, and know every step they take.
If you love banter, you will get plenty of it in this book! It is witty, sharp, and deeply thought-provoking. J. K. Ross has a way of writing that will keep you hooked! Her way of writing makes you feel the high emotional stakes. One of the most striking I read was, “If they were about to take me… would you kill me first?” / “Yes, without hesitation… Quick is kinder. It’s the last gift I could give you if it came to that.” It perfectly captures the raw, deep bond between Elle and Kaelren. Their honesty is steady, their loyalty holds strong like roots in the earth, and their connection feels inevitable in the best possible way. Every interaction between them hums with tension, vulnerability, and the sense that they each hold the power to destroy or save the other.
Ross’s world-building is nothing short of captivating. The environment isn’t just a setting. It’s alive, active, and emotionally meaningful in ways that make the story feel completely unique. The sensory depth, the intricate lore, and the way the world responds to the characters’ choices pull you in effortlessly. And yes… that unforgettable plant encounter will definitely have you trying to visualize the moment.
The pacing strikes an even balance between emotional moments, character growth, and high-stakes magic. You don’t just root for Elle and Kaelren, you hold out hope for them to find a peace in a magical world that has different plans.
If the tropes you love include forced proximity, one bed, political tension, chosen loyalty and protective love then you will want to devour this book. It will leave you asking yourself just how far would you go to protect the one person who completes you?
As the first book in The Thorned Sigil series, it sets the foundation superbly with its rich world-building, captivating stakes, characters you can’t help but cheer for, and a story that wraps itself around your imagination like a blooming vine. If you love a romantasy that is deep, original and set in a vivid living world, you will want to add this to your TBR.
When Elle inherits her late grandmother’s house, the last thing she expects is to get transported into a different world through a portal in a tree in her grandmother’s garden. Discovering her family kept many secrets from her and she actually has powers she can’t control, Elle must join Kaelren and his friends to learn about her magic and no matter how much they can’t stand each other and despite their growing attraction and unwanted bond, they need to work together before her magic kills her or before they get caught by the Crown looking for Elle.
This book must have one of the most unique and interesting magic systems I’ve ever read about and I loved learning about and discovering it alongside Elle, our FMC. She was a true fish out of water after being thrown into that magical world and learning that she has magic herself and I liked how realistic her reactions were to everything and it was great to see her grow in this book, she had an amazing character development and after how this book ended I’m excited to see how she grows in the next one. Kaelren was a complicated MMC, he was a real jerk in the beginning but I could understand why and he quickly grew on me, he also had some perfect ‘touch her and die’ scenes that always make me swoon. Elle and Kaelren definitely didn’t start off on the right foot but I loved seeing their slow burn kind of hate to love relationship with very reluctant allies thrown in the middle, they were the definition of grumpy x sunshine but fit together so well and I really enjoyed seeing them together. And of course one of my favorite characters was Peeble, they truly stole the show so many times and was a comedic relief, I loved it every time they appeared.
While I enjoyed this book, I think I had an issue with the pacing. I felt like at times everything was happening too quickly while other times it was dragging a bit and made it hard for me to stay focused on what was happening. It also took me a while to get fully into this story but I’m grateful I didn’t stop reading because it did pick up eventually and I ended up really enjoying this book, especially the second part made it difficult to put it down and the last few chapters were so good.
A Throne in Bloom is a great fantasy romance book, I had a great time reading it and recommend it to those who enjoy this genre.
Alright. I might have angry read half of this book. I am trying my best to remain constructive in my reviews. I think this book has great potential. In my opinion, it needs a bit more polishing.
Summary: Elle's grandmother passed away and she inherits her house. On her first night there, a portal open and two males show up to take her in the realm she's from. Her grandma had escaped it a long time ago. Elle is chosen by the root and marks show up on her. Kaelren is corrupted, but promised the grandma to keep Elle safe. The crown prince wants to take her to have her powers.
Opinion
I think the general idea was good. A botanical fantasy is out of the ordinary and the message the author tries to convey through her story is a good one.
What did not work for me was the writing itself.
- The magic system between root, bloom, seed and rot was not clearly explained. I finished and I can really tell you what it means.
- The secondary characters are not shining much. We barely know anything about them. It was hard to connect with them. Bryx was funny, but that didn't happen until 3/4 of the book.
- We are told and not shown. Kaelren is basically loathing and lusting until the loathing is over all of a sudden. Elle makes friend with a servant near the end. They have about two very short interactions before I am told how they deeply care for each other.
- The vocabulary is excessivly repetitive. Everything is impossible or shouldn't exist. Regret is, in my opinion, an important secondary character at this point.
- There are inconsistencies throughout the book about her mother's death, the previous failures and the effect of physical contact between the main characters.
- Botanical smut 😶I was not prepared for this.
- The desire to have an emotional whimsical story overpowers the story itself. A lot of time is spent describing things that shouldn't exist or are impossible. I did not really understand the quest. The ending was meant to be tear jerking I think, but I mostly felt like the author was trying too hard.
My buddy reader just abandoned me with this book 🤣 I was just too stubborn to dnf.
A Throne in Bloom is the kind of romantasy that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place. From the very first page, J.K. Ross pulls you into a world that feels vibrant and alive, written with the kind of stunning, sensory detail that makes every setting bloom right off the page. I found myself completely immersed—like I was walking through this world shoulder to shoulder with these characters.
The humor in this story is priceless. A “death bee named Kevin” genuinely lives rent-free in my mind now. But right alongside the laughs comes a powerful emotional undercurrent that made me fall headfirst for the characters.
Elle is a standout heroine. Clever, fierce, and just the right amount of stubborn. Watching the world through her eyes made everything sharper and more alive. And Kaelren… if morally gray, reluctant-protector MMCs are your weakness, good luck. At 11% he hit me with “I’m a killer who happens to be keeping you alive,” and I never recovered.
Their dynamic is everything. Tension that simmers. Banter that cuts. A slow burn that builds until you’re practically vibrating with the need for them to just touch. And when they do? Softness, devotion, obsession. The kind of protectiveness that could topple kingdoms.
The transformation in their relationship gave me actual chills. Watching Kaelren go from “I’ll kill you if I must” to “I would die if it meant you lived” was breathtaking. By the time he declares, “I would burn down both worlds if that’s what it takes to get you back,” my soul left my body.
This book made me laugh. It made me swoon. It made me clutch my heart like a Victorian woman hearing bad news. I didn’t want to put it down for a second. By the halfway point, I already knew I didn’t want it to ever end.
A Throne in Bloom isn’t just a book. It’s an experience. It’s easily one of the best reads of my year—top three without hesitation—and a story I’ll be thinking about long after the final page.❤️
Where do I even begin!?!? This book is absolutely like nothing I have read! I loved every minute of it.
The first chapter had me rolling in memories of the past with my own great-grandmother who was the most precious person to me growing up. The way the author details things down to the dust bunnies floating in the air makes you feel like you are standing in the room experiencing it yourself! And this is just the first chapter!
The world building in the book is top notch. The world itself is so unique and I have yet to read anything remotely similar. The character development and growth is so beautiful.
I fell in love with all the characters! My favorite characters (not surprisingly) were 2 of the side characters, Peeble and Bryx! They are hilarious even in the worst times! Our FMC and MMC, Elle and Kaelran are also amazing in their own ways. Elle is strong, fierce and oh so sassy. Kaelran is broody, moody, sexy and so very protective.
The slow-burn between Elle and Kaelran had me screaming to get it over with but when the spice hit it was well worth the wait!
I especially love the life changing quotes and phrases throughout the book. As well as the perfect pacing with plenty of twists, turns and surprises throughout. I found myself highlighting entirely too much.
And can we take a minute just to appreciate the beauty that is the cover of this book!?!?
If you love unique world-building, slow-burn, spicy, unique magics, fantastic characters, enemies to lovers and found family then you will want to add this book to your TBR immediately!
Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read this copy in advance. All opinions are my own.
This book was amazing!!!!!!!!! It is arguably one of my reads of the year. I found J.K on socials and fell in love with the snippets she shared of this story but I never anticipated being on the edge of my seat the entire book. I LOVE our mmc, Kaelren. He is the perfect mix of Xaden Riorson, Kingfisher and Aragorn. I love a broody shadow daddy as a mmc and Kaelren brings all the broody touch her and die energy. I devoured this book in less than 12 hours and that is huge for me because I usually have to take my time with fantasy/romantasy. This was such a page turner and it had me grasping for more each chapter. J.K out did herself and I can not recommend this book enough. The book is not average HEA romantasy, the ending is a killer that hits you out of nowhere. The fmc Elle is so badass. I am so happy that J.K did not make her a frail and skinny 19 year old. I love that she let Elle be older and more mature than your average FMC in fantasy, I also loved that Elle's story felt real even though it is a work of fiction. If you love Ridoc from the Empyrean series or Carrion from Quicksliver , than you will love Bryx and Pebble. They are the perfect comic relief for this story. Thank J.K for creating such a relatable story that reminds us that we are never too much or broken and that we should never make ourselves smaller to please someone else especially for a MAN. I hate Jullian and agree with Kaelren's statement that he deserves to die. Everyone go read this book immediately, and please consider adding J.K to your romanstasy author roster because she is up there with Rebecca Yarros and Callie Hart.

Do you ever start a book expecting one thing… and end it completely enchanted by something even better? That was my experience with A Throne in Bloom by J. K. Ross.
This story is charming, heartfelt, and bursting with imagination. From the very beginning, I was drawn into a lush garden realm filled with magic, beautiful scenery, and one of the most delightful surprises I’ve encountered in a fantasy—giant bees that people ride for travel. Yes. Bees. And somehow it’s just as magical as it sounds.
Elle is a wonderful heroine to follow, especially with her unexpected and completely lovable talking beetle companion. The banter between them adds so much warmth and humor to the story. And then there’s Kaelren—the grumpy, brooding MMC who has clearly mastered the art of silent longing. Watching his feelings for Elle grow, even as he tries to deny them, was tender, emotional, and incredibly well written. Their connection felt natural, layered, and deeply satisfying.
This book delivered everything I look for in a fantasy romance: rich world-building, excellent character dynamics, slow-burn tension, humor, and heart. I truly didn’t want this story to end.
I’m honored to be part of the author’s ARC team, and I am already impatiently waiting for the next book. If you love whimsical fantasy settings, grumpy love interests, and stories filled with both magic and emotion, I highly recommend this one.
The blurb promised a cross between Alice in Wonderland and The Cruel Prince, and for once, the comparison is absolutely spot on, and I loved it.
The world is incredibly unique: sentient, hostile, and actively resistant to anything that doesn’t belong. It feels alive in the best and most unsettling way, and that sense of danger is layered beautifully throughout the story. The atmosphere alone makes this book worth reading.
The characters are wonderfully written, with diverse personalities that feel real and distinct. While both the FMC and MMC are solid leads, the true standout is Peeble. Peeble completely stole my heart. Their commentary had me laughing out loud, and nearly all of my favorite lines came from them.
This quote alone made the book for me: “You’re seventy percent repression and thirty percent murder instinct wrapped in a very attractive package of doom.” Absolute perfection.
So why not five stars? This is entirely a personal preference, not a flaw in the writing itself. I have a strong pet peeve about the repeated use of the word “regret” in descriptive passages. It only happened twice, but it pulled me out of the story both times.
That tiny detail aside, this was an imaginative, immersive, and highly enjoyable read. If you like dangerous worlds, morally complicated courts, and sharp-tongued side characters, I highly recommend picking this up.
I had the opportunity to be an ARC reader of A Throne in Bloom by J.K. Ross.
This book feels like someone cracked open a kaleidoscope and said, “here, step inside.” The magic system is unlike anything I’ve read before. Fresh, vibrant, whimsical in a way that makes most fae-centered romantasy worlds feel a little… beige by comparison. Every description was so vivid I could practically see the colors blooming off the page. The part where they are bouncing off mushrooms like a trampoline? I loved it. Even the characters created in this story are entirely unique, it truly is imaginative.
The FMC? A force. She speaks her mind, stands her ground, and carries the story with this perfect mix of strength, sass, and vulnerability. And her found family? Absolute gems. Witty, supportive, chaotic in all the right ways. I would 100% follow these characters into any rebellion, no questions asked.
The plot blends war and rising rebellion with a slow-burn romance that had me feral for every stolen moment. And when the story finally delivers on that tension? Oh, it delivers.
Overall, A Throne in Bloom is imaginative, immersive, and totally addictive. A romantasy that blooms bigger and brighter than expected and I can't wait to read what happens next! J.K. Ross is an author you will want on your shelf.
✨ARC REVIEW✨A Throne In Bloom really impressed me from the world building, to the witty characters, a cruel MMC with a fierce FMC and the tension is palpable!
Elle inherits her grandmother Jo’s house and a magical garden with it! NOOOWW GRANDMA JO! Let’s just say she had a few secrets and our Dr Pepper loving FMC is about to find out all about them when she falls into a different realm! Where all those family secrets are revealed and my jaw is still on the floor! Will Elle take control of her own fate or will it control her?!
I really enjoyed the details and descriptions of Wynmire and its characters. It made me feel immersed in the story and found myself smiling at how amazed the FMC felt reading it from her POV.
AND Listen I love to read a good sex scene but even better when my imagination joins in (😉 tehehe) AND THAT WATERFALL SCENE 🌶️🌶️ 🌶️ HOLY VINES!! 🤐 🍄🤭 Gorgeous artwork to go with it by @Nevae_harts
I have so many things I want to spill about the MMC Kaelren and the side characters like Peeble, Nimor, Bryx, and Kevin (to name some of my faves) BUT I’ll let you guys find out for yourselves! I cannot wait for the next book but until then I’ll be in my dreamscape waiting🫠.
Don’t take my word for it! Get a copy now! Preorder A Throne In Bloom🌹by @authorjkross 📖 Releasing January 1, 2026
Thank you to the author for the ARC—opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed A Throne in Bloom, and while this falls under the romantasy umbrella, it truly stands apart from the rest.
The story follows Elle, a human FMC who is drawn into a new realm after moving into her deceased grandmother’s home. Soon after, golden vines begin to appear on her skin—marks that grow and pulse with power she does not yet understand. Enter Kaelren, a failed prince and brooding MMC, bound by an oath to protect Elle while simultaneously struggling with deep resentment. He was meant to bear the marks, not her—and that tension adds an incredible layer of angst and emotional depth to their dynamic.
This book delivers everything I love: rich world-building, a slow-burn romance, intense yearning, a grumpy MMC, and a strong FMC who stands firm in her beliefs. The magical elements are immersive and beautifully woven into the story, making the world feel vivid and alive.
With unexpected twists, emotional tension, and a cliffhanger that hurt in the best way, this was a true page-turner from start to finish. I absolutely loved this story and cannot wait to continue the series—count me in for book two immediately.
Highly recommend for fans of romantasy who want something familiar yet refreshingly different.
What a beautiful beautiful magical, whimsical, elaborate romantasy. The world building is exquisite, detailing the wonders of the world of Wynmire, a world that is slowly dying from within, spreading the rot slowly. Until Elle falls through a crack of reality from Earth to this dimension as it were. Now with the help of Kaelren, they are on a path to save Wynmire. Elle starts off as a soft, be it weakish, insecure, yet with a sassy mouth FMC. But as the story develops, so does she, and I am so glad to see her becoming a fierce heroin. Kaelren is broody, only following what he deems fit, but he also evolves, along with his feelings for her. Their chemistry is a slow push and pull, but when they finally come together, the sparks literally fly. Their first 🌶️ interaction was wow! Using nature in that way was delish🤣🫣 Their close circle played even important roles in this story, every character brought extra life and meaning to the story. The last few chapters were intensely beautiful, the epilogue was 😳🤯 seeing through “Elle’s” eyes.
This definitely should be on your tbr list if you are into great world building, whimsical creatures, beautiful storyline! Cannot wait for book 2!! 5/5⭐️
Welcome to Wynmire!! When I first saw this book I immediately put it on my tbr because the cover is stunning and the blurb sounded really interesting. The book starts with Elle reclaiming her grandmothers house after she passes away but just as she’s settling in, Elle falls into another universe where she finds out that she is either destined to save the world or ruin everything. I love that we just get thrown into this new world because it makes me feel like I’m right there with Elle as she meets Peeble, her sassy beetle, Kaelren, the cursed/failed prince who promised to protect her, and the rest of his hilarious yet mysterious crew. The magic that we see in the world is so fascinating and nothing like the magic I’ve read in other stories. The adventure that Elle goes on to discover how her magic works (before time runs out) has so many ups/downs/twists/turns all while she is trying to stay true to herself and trying to figure out how to handle the mysterious bond with Kaelren. You can almost feel the slow burn tension coming off the pages but the wait is so worth it. The ending has a gut wrenching cliff hanger and I can’t wait for book 2!!
Thank you to J. K. Ross for picking me to be an ARC reader for this book!!
A Throne in Bloom, a dying Fae world clinging to its last breath — ethereal and beautiful, and brimming with monsters who wear elegance like armor. In this realm, the most breathtaking creatures are often the most deadly, and the impossible blooms right in front of you. Giant bees carry you through this perilous world, adding a pulse of magic and thrill to every turn. The story moves fast, sweeping you into a tale of two princes whose power reshapes the fate of their world, and a moody, broody MMC who keeps your curiosity hooked page after page. Even the friendly neighborhood beetle earns its place as a tiny legend. I won’t lie — it’s tough to follow at first. The world is layered, intricate, and demands your attention. But the deeper I read, the more the pieces clicked into place, and the more I fell in love with the beauty threaded through every thorn and petal. Elle’s resilience is the heart of this book — steadfast, determined, never giving up even when the world seems set against her. It’s a story of endurance, glittering magic, and the strength of the human spirit in the face of ruin. Magical, enchanting, and unlike anything I’ve read before — a realm where wonder and danger bloom side by side.
* Slow-Burn Romance * Grumpy x Sunshine dynamic * Morally Gray Prince/Hero * "Touch Her and Die" protection * Forced Proximity * Forbidden Magic/Love * The "Wrong Girl" Chosen * Found Family * She Becomes the Monster * Portal to Another World * Enemies-to-Lovers
I was lucky enough to grab an ARC of J.K. Ross's debut, A Throne in Bloom, and I'm so glad I did! If you're a fan of the morally gray heroes and forbidden magic of The Cruel Prince or the immersive wonder of Alice in Wonderland, this is an absolute must-read. The story drops Elle into a dying, magic-pulsing realm after she inherits her grandmother's estate, and from there, it's a wild ride. The world-building is incredibly vivid—think golden vines that crawl beneath your skin and a garden realm that bites back. But the true highlight is the dynamic between Elle and Kaelren, the grumpy, corrupted prince who becomes her only protection. The slow-burn tension is everything and hurts so good! The "touch her and die" energy is real, and the banter is fantastic. It's a dark, twisty, and atmospheric read that kept me hooked from start to finish. I can't wait for book two in "The Thorned Sigil" series!
The premise had me—a dark, twisted faerie retelling of Alice in Wonderland. And to be fair, the vibes were absolutely vibing. The world was sentient, hostile, and atmospheric. Gorgeous. Unhinged. Unexpected. But maybe almost too much? I wanting to be able to fully immerse myself, but the story just kept shoving me through the lore before I could adjust.
“𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩.”
And maybe the banter. I felt like the dialogue kept circling—making it confusing to follow and occasionally frustrating ‘cause ya girl is a HO HO HO for some witty banter. But, the yearning and ache was DONE RIGHT 👌🏻
To shoot it straight—I was the first to rate this book what I did on Goodreads…so it’s COMPLETELY personal preference. If you love hostile fae courts, worlds that want you dead, and side characters with tongues dipped in venom, this book might be for you!
I received this book as an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving a review…
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think this book might have broke me. Let’s get into it.
First of all this was like an Alice in wonderland type vibe and I was loving every second of it!! The world building the fun whimsical aspect. It was all so beautifully written. It transported me into their world.
The characters were so fun. Even the side characters!! First of all Peeble was my favorite by far. So funny and witty I was cracking up.
Elle was so strong and so fierce. She stood her ground and fought hard for everything. Kaelren, ooooooo my gosh! Who doesn’t like grumpy shadow daddy!! Their slow burn romance had me feeling feral. Their banter was to die for, and once the “hate” shifted it became a whole new story!! Then there was the dream scene(if you know you know) and oooooo man!!! I LOVED IT!!!
I don’t want to give anything away but the “met before” plot twist?!?!? WHATTTTT!!! Finding each other in every timeline. Ughhh I cannot!! 😩😩😩
THE END?!?! THE ENDDDDDD!!! NOOOOOOOO! I need more, and I need it like yesterday!!! I was literally crying, I felt like I was breaking too!!
DO NOT SKIP THIS BOOK!! It is a definite must read!!
This is one of those books that has me desperately wishing for half/quarter stars because truly this book was more 3.5 but not quite 4 stars. Thank you thank you for the opportunity to read this as an ARC, opinions are my own.
I loved the premise, I was expecting to immediately fall into a fantasy world so starting in Arkansas was trippy but totally worked. I was expecting a slow burn… this was not that… HOWEVER… it came full circle with the twist. Initially I wasn’t sure this book was going to be for me, some of the dialogue was a little repetitive, a little too “check the box” for tropes, too many things smelled like regret but by halfway I couldn’t imagine DNF-ing and missing out on the rest of this fantastical story. Loved the sassy side characters, a little over the top, but enjoyable. The last 15% was somewhat confusing, completely heartbreaking, a nice set up for the next book.
This was one of the harder books I’ve read to rate accurately given its inconsistencies over the course of the entire book. If a fantasy world filled with sentient plants, a partially explained political system, and love across timelines intrigues you, definitely give it a try when it releases in January!
A Throne in Bloom is the kind of story that feels like stepping into a sun-lit garden after a long winter — soft, hopeful, and gently enchanting. From the first chapter, J.K. Ross invites you into a world where quiet magic thrives, where every character carries their own little seed of longing, and where growth — emotional and magical — becomes the real heart of the journey.
The writing is beautifully tender, filled with moments that feel almost floral in how delicately they’re crafted. I loved the way Ross builds relationships: slow, steady, and full of warmth. The friendships feel genuine, the budding romance feels sweet without ever overpowering the story, and even the conflicts are handled with a softness that still manages to tug at your emotions.
The world building blooms gradually, giving you time to soak in each detail like sunlight. And while I did find myself wishing a couple of threads reached just a bit deeper or lingered a little longer, the overall experience remains charming and deeply comforting.
What truly stands out is the emotional gentleness — the sense of hope, healing, and quiet courage that flows through every chapter. It’s a book that reminds you that power doesn’t always roar; sometimes it whispers, grows, and blossoms.
First of all, I need to know.... is there going to be a second book? Because I need one!
I had the privilege of reading this as an ARC, and let me tell you, I was so sad when it was over. Fantasy is not my go-to genre. But this book has made me a believer. Not only was it action packed from the beginning, it really made me feel for the characters.
As usual, the MMC (Kaelren) and FMC (Elle) are an enemies to lovers story. But the love that they form for each other is so powerful. I can't put into words how I felt every emotion as if I was experiencing it myself.
Also, it's rare that a story makes you fall so in love with the supporting characters, but this one did. This group of "misfits" worked together to save the world, and they did so in their own ways, with their own flair. There was so much humor and banter that it gave me time to breathe between the not so happy parts of the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy/romantasy. Or for anyone who is thinking of trying the genre, but not sure how deep of a dive they want to do. It literally had me hooked from the beginning, and I'm not lying when I say I NEED a 2nd book to answer the burning questions I still have.
