In the realm of Aelethion, philosopher wizards dominate the royal courts, and peace has reigned for centuries-- but when captain of the guard Lochhart, a reserved knight with an anguished past, stumbles across one of the lost widlath standing stones, he uncovers a troubling an ancient cult dedicated to a bloodthirsty god of old has renewed in the underbelly of Aelethion, their sole aim the annihilation of all being. The stones darken the sky and destroy reality in erratic ways, threatening to consume all of existence. In order to prevent the cult from accomplishing their plan, Lochhart and his party must rely on a wizard whose allegiances are as hidden as the stones they must find.
Also drawn into the chaos is Morwyn, a wilderness-ready woman on a quest of her own, whose mother is afflicted by the power of the stones. When she is waylaid by an enigmatic deity looking to capitalize on Morwyn's desperation to save her mother, she must find the strength of will to carve her own path in defiance of the one assigned her by the Fates. As their stories are woven together on the tapestry of time, Lochhart and Morwyn are faced with one what are we when everything is stripped away?
For fantasy fans everywhere, this has foggy mystical moors and highlands, knights, a fellowship, and a spark of magic! I had the opportunity to beta-read The Profane Stones of Aelethion and highly recommend it if you enjoy a dash of ancient cultish intrigue with your otherwise nostalgic walking fellowship journey. The story really hooks you in as Lochhart hems in the hellish villains in a race for the fated stones. Can't wait to read what John Bryce Dana writes next!
