Dashing Rogues and Ruined Librarians #1

Of Dukes and Forbidden Words

Rate this book
If ancient words don’t land them into scandal, their forbidden attraction in a library after hours surely will.

It’s the Christmastide season of 1816 and more than the weather is uncertain. When Barrington (Barr) Combes-Mead, Duke of Scarborough does some renovations to his London townhouse and unearths a book of erotic, Egyptian prose, he immediately wishes to have it translated. If the book proves valuable, he will certainly sell it, yet part of him hopes the book might inspire him to reclaim the excitement he’s missing in his life… somehow.

Miss Catherine Pickwick used to make her living as a governess, but after whispers of scandals, she changed her focus to that of a librarian, because research and study made her happy. As the daughter of a university professor, she is no stranger to ancient cultures and literature. When a duke of some consequence visits her lending library with the request to have an interesting and quite indecent book translated, she can’t wait to take up the challenge. Knowledge was power… wasn’t it?

Perhaps it is the words within the book or a natural attraction, but as the duke and Catherine spend long hours together because of the text or impromptu Christmas preparations, desire bedevils them. Acting upon it only ramps that delicious thrill, but when a series of troubling incidents arise, they assume the book is cursed. When silly antics on Christmas Eve end in assumed disaster, they each must face truths they’ve been avoiding, and perhaps they might find everything they want… if they’re fortunate.

Welcome to the Dashing Rogues and Ruined Librarians series, where adventure, books, intrigue, and spicy romance will be found amidst the stacks in Regency London.

Of Dukes and Forbidden Words is the first book in the Dashing Rogues and Ruined Librarians series.

It's Christmas in London and while all of London is preparing for Christmas, Barrington (Barr) Combes-Mead, Duke of Scarborough is personally handling the renovations to his London townhouse and unearths a book of erotic, Egyptian prose. After looking at it, he decides to have it translated and heads to the library to have it translated. Once there he finds a beautiful woman who appears to be the perfect person to handle the translations. He insists they be done in secrecy at his home.

Cate has not been raised as other young women. Her father is an educated man who is often caught up in his papers. After a few scandals Cate has unfortunately been a willing partner, she has no desire to marry a man who cannot accept her for who she is. As a result, she spends a lot of time at the lending library. However, when a Duke stumbles into her life with a challenge that she simply can't resist, she is determined to risk scandal and her heart.

This is a mature and spicy romance. The characters are fun and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed their story.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

Thoughts on this book: likeable lead characters and side characters I really liked that our Handsome Duke was humble and kind towards his staff considering them friends and inviting them to his holiday festivities, and I liked that our leads were both a bit older than the usual historical romance couples. This was a cute cozy quick read for me.

Dislike: While I wasn't expecting a literary masterpiece I do generally like more of a story to go along with my books, this book had so much spice (and it was a shorter book to begin with) that I found myself scrolling through pages to get back to some actual plot that didn't involve some form of disrobement... I just didn't feel that they knew each other well enough for things to progress so quickly.

Of Dukes and Forbidden Words by Sandra Sookoo is part of a new seres, Dashing Rogues and Ruined Librarians. The name of the series is intriguing. This story features Barrington Combes-Mead, the 10th Duke of Scarborough, who is eight and forty years of age and depressed. His wife has been dead for five years; she was the one who forced him into society and without her he rarely left the house. His valet and friend, Travers, is pushing him to be out and about, maybe find a woman. The rain makes leaving the house unpleasant; the weather apparently to be blamed on on a volcano in Indonesia, which at that time was known as the Dutch West Indies, not Indonesia. He had been whiling away his time remodeling his house, doing the work himself. When he and Travers went to the attic to see if there was any furniture there he could use in the drawing room renovation, they came upon an ancient book, Egyptian, which he was not able to read, but he could view the drawings, which were interesting, to say the least. Wishing to get a translation, he went to the book store for recommendations for a translator where he met Miss Catherine Pickwick, a most unusual woman.

Both characters are interesting and just a little different, butting heads against the norms of the time. Barr was friendly with his servants, in fact often ate with them. Catherine was interested in things, academic and otherwise, that were frown upon for women of this time. The plot was thin and very spicy. Almost too spicy. It lacked any semblance of reality, which is already lacking in this type of book. Their interests did coincide and it took them to some curious places. It was very readable, as are all Sookoo’s novels.

I was invited to read Of Dukes and Forbidden Words by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #SandraSookoo #OfDukesAndForbiddenWords

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is book 1 of a new Dragonblade series written by Sandra Sookoo, a spicy Regency romance with tropes of class divide, mature MCs, secret affairs, second chance at love.

Barr, Barrington Combes-Mead, the Duke of Scarborough, has been widowed for many years, and has been isolating himself from society, renovating his townhouse. With two grown children already, including an heir, he has no real need or desire to wade into Society affairs, despite the encouragement of his friends. But in the course of his work in his home, he discovers an ancient Egyptian tome hidden away, with some rather intriguing erotic images. Desiring to have it interpreted, he sets forth to find a scholar to review his find, and hopefully interpret it.

Miss Catherine Pickwick is a bluestocking spinster and commoner who is firmly on the shelf, and burnt by her choices in the past, twice removed from her post as governess because of scandalous indescretions. Now she lives at home with her widowed scholar father, aiding with his studies, doing her own academic work, and working at a local library. Her paths cross with the handsome Duke of Scarborough when he comes in her library looking for someone to work for him, and he ends up engaging Catherine to study his mysterious book.

Thus starts a spicy hot steamy affair as their are nearly instantly attracted to each other. If this is not labeled as part of Dragonblade's Flame line of books, it is likely because the poor soul who was assigned to do so burnt to a crisp on contact to the page - very steamy open door sensuality from pretty much the moment Barr and Catherine are alone together the first time. Catherine helps Barr to redefine himself as more than an aging widower, and Barr helps Catherine overcome her own bad choices in love before. He is also pretty progressive for a duke, liking to work with his own hands, and befriending those not of his class. Catherine is very different from most women of the time as well, being much more open sexually and embracing her sexuality, despite her past scandal and the social expectations at the time. This is a spicy love story that is also set during the Christmas season, involving a books, meddlesome friends and servants, with hints of ancient curses, and an ancient love story-tragedy as well.

Spicy and fun read and hits many of the right notes for me with the mature lovers, and other tropes I enjoy.

Miss Catherine ‘Cate’ Pickwick is a spinster who works in a lending library and lives at home with her father. She had several failed attempts at being a governess but was dismissed because she had affairs with her employers.

Barrington ‘Barr’ Combes-Mead, Duke of Scarborough is a widower who is keeping himself busy by doing some renovations on his townhouse. He is hiding from society since his wife passed away and doesn’t know how to move forward with his life.

Barr finds an erotic book with Egyptian prose but needs someone to translate the book for him. He meets Cate at the lending library when she offers to translate the book. They both are instantly drawn to each other as they work on translating the book and soon begin an affair. When Christmastide is over and the translation of the book is done will Cate and Barr go their separate ways?

The description of this book was both interesting and intriguing so I decided I needed to check it out. I am glad I did because I absolutely loved it and thought it was fabulous!! The book was entertaining, a lot of fun and the steam level was out of this world!! I instantly liked both Cate and Barr’s characters and the chemistry between them was awesome. While there was a lot of steamy scenes in the book there was also the connection between Cate and Barr as they got to know each other for who they were. I liked that they were older adults who were not worry about society exceptions and followed their hearts instead of what was expected of them. The secondary characters were delightful and added to the story without being a distraction to it. This is the first book in the series and I look forward to reading the next book. I highly recommend this book!!

I’m a huge fan of Sandra Sookoo, and once again she’s proven why she’s one of my absolute favorite storytellers. She has this incredible gift for creating characters who stay with you long after the final page, and in Of Dukes and Forbidden Words, she’s given us two of my favorites yet.

Miss Catherine Pickwick is everything I adore in a heroine—smart, capable, and quietly powerful. A librarian with a talent for translating ancient texts, she’s the kind of woman who knows her mind and her worth. And then there’s Barr, the stunning Duke of Scarborough, who walks into her lending library with a scandalous Egyptian manuscript and a request that changes everything. The question becomes: can they make it through translating this erotic text without falling headfirst into desire and danger?

For me, this story was exactly the adventure I needed. It has all the elements that make historical romance feel like home—mystery woven through candlelit rooms, irresistible attraction simmering beneath every shared glance, unforgettable characters, and just the right amount of spice to make the pages glow. The Christmas setting adds a lovely touch of warmth and wonder, even as the rain pours endlessly outside their world.

Sandra Sookoo delivers a romance that’s mature, deeply felt, and wonderfully fun. I loved every moment of it, and I already know this is a book I’ll be returning to again and again. It’s the perfect blend of heart, heat, and holiday magic—an irresistible start to a series I can’t wait to continue.

Listen, I got my paws on an advanced copy of Of Dukes and Forbidden Words from NetGalley, and I must tell you, this book is a positively crackling story, a rare bird that manages to be both frightfully intellectual and naughty, which is just the thing for this month if you ask me.

We’ve got all the essential ingredients here: a classic Duke-meets-librarian situation, the heady thrill of forbidden attraction exacerbated by that perennial snag of class difference, and the ultimate bookish romance built around, of all things, an erotic Egyptian manuscript.

The main players, Barr, the duke who’s completely bored and simply in need of a spot of excitement, and Catherine Pickwick, the brilliant, once-scandalised librarian who’s got a real brain for ancient languages, are forced into classic forced proximity with their late-night translation sessions, which naturally leads to some proper high-heat Regency antics that are definitely not for the faint of heart, bless their souls. As if that wasn't enough to stir the pot, the whole delicious mess is set during Christmastide 1816, giving it that cosy, festive vibe, yet it's all complicated by a marvellous cursed manuscript intrigue and a glorious rake-redeemed arc for the duke, making this a splendid read that is absolutely worth a punt for anyone who adores a spicy, brainy historical romance that culminates in a perfectly satisfying HEA.

Barrington and Cate

“Of Dukes and Forbidden Words” is book one in Sandra Sookoo’s new series Dashing Rogues and Ruined Librarians. A dashing duke, Barrington (known as Barr to his friends) finds an Egyptian text while renovating his London townhouse. He turns to a librarian, Cate, to translate the scandalous tome. I thoroughly enjoyed this steamy, romantic story about an older couple who find passion and love. The story is well written and fast paced. The attraction between Barrington and Cate was immediate and potent. I liked both of these characters. Barrington was a widower with grown children. He was an upstanding member of society, a gentleman, and he treated his servants high above ton standards. I liked that Cate was intelligent and happy with the direction of her life. I also liked that she was not shy when it came to her passion. I also liked that the story in the old book was revealed as Cate translated the words. And last but not least, warnings about the forbidden book being cursed haunted the household as accidents began to happen. A heartfelt romance to be sure starring wonderful characters is a book I can definitely recommend. The story takes place around Christmastime but can definitely be read any time of the year.

I received this book from NetGallery, my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Another phenomenal book from Sandra Sookoo!!

An amazing story to begin a new series.

It's Christmas in London and what's more it's miserable and rainy.. but that's London right? Except for the fact in this case it just won't stop raining..

Barr wants something different in his life besides the same old thing so when he stumbles upon a Egyptian erotic book in his attic he decides to take action and find someone to help him translate it so he sell it.. except that someone is beautiful librarian who is up for the challenge and she turns his world upside down..

Cate is settled into her life as a librarian especially after not one but two scandals following two attempts with other types of employment however when a Duke stumbles into her life with a challenge that she simply can't resist.. she is willing to not only risk a scandal but her heart..

Both characters are mature which is something I've come to love from this author they aren't spring chickens.

Care knows what she wants how she wants it and she won't settle for less regardless of who someone is or isn't.

Barr doesn't care about title or not.. he is just an ordinary man with a title.. and he has taught his children to be the same way..

This story is filled with laughter and love..

This story had me up all night reading just to finish it..

I can't wait to read the rest of this series!!

Of Dukes and Forbidden Words is a historical romance with a touch of mystery, featuring an intriguing setup. The Duke of Scarborough comes into possession of an ancient Egyptian manuscript and needs a discreet and skilled translator. Enter Cate, a brilliant and capable heroine who just happens to be the perfect person for the task. The translation must remain secret, as the Duke fears the consequences of being known as the owner of something potentially extraordinary. As Cate works in the Duke’s household, a forbidden attraction slowly develops between them. While there is a mystery subplot surrounding the manuscript, the romance takes center stage and this is very much a steamy historical romance. The chemistry is intense, and the emotional and physical connection between the characters quickly becomes the heart of the story.

One thing I especially appreciated was the maturity of the main characters. Both are in their late 30s to early 40s, which brought a refreshing depth to their dynamic. Add in the class difference romance, a bluestocking heroine, and subtle holiday/Christmas vibes, and this book checks a lot of boxes.

Overall, I had a great time reading this and would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy spicy historical romance, mature protagonists, and stories with a hint of mystery alongside the romance.

Of Dukes and Forbidden Words is the first book in Sandra Sookoo’s Dashing Rogues and Ruined Librarians series.

The Duke of Scarborough has been alone for several years. His wife has been dead for several years and his children have lives of their own. He’s considering getting back into society when he finds a spicy ancient Egyptian book. In looking for someone to translate the book, he meets Catherine who happens to know ancient Egyptian.

The chemistry between the two of them is immediate and intense! I appreciated that the couple was “older” than so many historical romance characters. (He’s 48, she’s 39.)

I would recommend this book if you are looking for a short Regency romance, set around Christmastime with some dialogue and a lot of spice.

I would not recommend this book if you appreciate historical accuracy in your books. In truth, ancient Egyptians did not write “books” (it was scrolls) and Regency England did not yet know how to read hieroglyphics or know what caused the horrible weather of 1816.

Thanks to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for an advanced copy.

The start of a new series & an interesting story of the Duke & the librarian, I loved that they were older, he was a widower & had grown up children. I enjoyed the book & liked the chemistry between the couple & how their feelings changed & deepened. It was different & a change from the ballrooms

*****Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of Of Dukes and Forbidden Words by Sandra Sookoo in exchange for an honest review.

In historical romance, we usually meet characters in their twenties or early thirties, but this book takes a different path by giving us two much more mature protagonists who are already well into the later chapters of their lives. That perspective felt refreshing, and I genuinely enjoyed seeing a love story unfold from that angle.

My only real issue was how quickly their relationship developed. The opening moved so fast that it felt like they didn’t get the chance to truly get to know each other. I would’ve loved a slower build, more moments of discovery, more time for their connection to deepen in a natural way.

Even with that pacing concern, this was an enjoyable read with a charming premise and characters who stand out simply by not fitting the genre’s usual mold. I appreciated the uniqueness of their story, and I think readers looking for a different kind of historical romance will enjoy it too.

This was a fun and cozy historical romance with just the right mix of books, scandal, and slow-burn desire. Set during Christmastide in 1816, the story follows Barr, a bored duke, and Catherine, a sharp and quietly bold librarian. Their connection grows while translating a very indecent ancient book, and honestly, the library-after-hours vibe was one of my favorite parts.
I really liked Catherine as a heroine—smart, curious, and driven by her love of knowledge. Barr starts off restless and unsure of himself, but his growth felt natural and satisfying. The forbidden attraction and class difference added tension, while the Christmas setting gave the story warmth and charm. The “maybe this book is cursed” moments were playful rather than dark, and the romance stayed front and center. Overall, this was an entertaining, spicy, and bookish Regency read that’s easy to sink into, especially if you enjoy scandal, redemption, and kisses among the bookshelves.
I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Curse, Books, Romance
Two delightful characters turn this intriguing yet passionate story into an explicit love story
I enjoyed how Barr finally saw the light through the tunnel sort of speck and Catherine had her
eyes on the duke from the beginning,
The plot of the story deals with the two researching an ancient Egyptian book which soon led them to
researching of another kind and a happy ending
📣 Bravo to the author for putting the servants on the same level of friendship with the butler, the valet, the cook which
all of the staff added some heartfelt moments along with some humor.

On the days leading up to Christmas, Barr, the Duke of Scarborough, hires librarian Cate to translate a book of erotic Egyptian text and hieroglyphics. In between facts about ancient Egypt they go at it like rabbits from the get-go. I like that the characters are older than the usual. 48 and 39. He's a widower with two adult children (away for Christmas) and she's a spinster who started affairs with her past married employers. Points for a not typical heroine but maybe I'd like her better if her relationships hadn't been married men? So if you're looking for steam with not a lot of plot this is it. I received an ARC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

Entertaining, Later-in-Life Historical Romance
Barr lost his wife a few years ago and never expected to find love again. Then an Egyptian book lands in his hands, and Catherine walks into his life. What begins as a professional collaboration soon turns into something far more tempting, and the two find it increasingly difficult to resist their forbidden attraction.
Could a discreet liaison between a duke and a professor’s daughter turn into something lasting? Mischief and shenanigans follow, especially from those who care about Barr and are determined to see him happy again.
I enjoyed this entertaining, steamy historical romance and would recommend it.

I appreciated that our FMC had some sense and spinal cord! Tends to be a rarity in this genre. I thought the main plot point of the artifact and translation could have been much more detailed and fleshed out, but overall I felt the pacing worked.

Spice spiced! Probably a 3/5 🌶 for me and each moment felt like it had a purpose for the relationship. A fun read perfect for the holidays!

A quick steamy read, and I liked the fact that the MC's are in their late 30's/late 40's, but there wasn't much emotional connection between them; this is definitely a book that relies on insta-lust. Throughout I didn't feel that the characterization or dialog really gelled. Plus the anachronisms put this squarely in the "HR fantasy" category. But if you're in the mood for spice set in the Regency period, this might work for you.

I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest, voluntary review. Thanks to the author and Net Galley for this opportunity.

What a lovely quick read, with a widowed Duke and a "spinster" librarian. Both leads were older, 48 and 39 which I found to be great as they were both experienced. The attraction between the two was instant! The spice was spicy, but I didn't find it to be redundant. This was also set during Christmastime, so if you are looking for a quick spicy holiday historical check this one out.

When Barr uncovers an erotic Egyptian book written in hieroglyphics, he hires an academic Catherine to translate it for him. They instead seem to be all over each other every time they meet. A librarian, a duke, an Egyptian tome and a curse…what? Yes. I love that these are more mature characters who know what they want and are not afraid to act on it. Their love story is so sweet and slow (yes, I said slow even though they do have fun times during the course of their story). The two main characters are simpatico. A lovely couple in a lovely story.

This is a spicier quick read. The story quickly jumps to bed sport minus the bed as Catherine and Barrington have an intense physical attraction. I would have liked an equal amount of time spent on developing an emotional connection to be able to give it five stars. The story is written well. I enjoyed the supporting characters and what they added to the story.

A very steamy historical romance, that is the start of a new series. There is a very enjoyable story behind the steam, with wonderful characters. They are both older than we usually find in romances and are not expecting one.
A grand adventure into a mysterious ancient book will bring many more discoveries.
If the next book is going to be as good, I will definitely be reading it.

Of Dukes and Forbidden Words is a deliciously indulgent Regency romance with a wonderfully bookish premise and refreshingly mature main characters.

Barrington Combes-Mead, a widowed duke drifting through life, stumbles upon an indecent Egyptian manuscript during renovations to his London townhouse. Enter Catherine Pickwick, a sharp, capable librarian whose past scandals have pushed her into the quiet safety of books and research. Their professional collaboration quickly turns into something far more intimate as they translate the text together during Christmastide.

What really worked for me was the pairing of older characters who know desire, loss, and hesitation intimately. The chemistry is immediate and unapologetic, and the story doesn’t shy away from letting them act on it. There’s also a cozy seasonal backdrop, a hint of “is it cursed?” intrigue, and just enough emotional depth to balance the spice.

This isn’t a strict historical realism read — it leans into escapism — but if you enjoy bookish heroines, second chances, festive settings, and steamy Regencies with heart, this is an easy recommendation.
