Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Adventures #1

Doctor Who: The First Question

Rate this book
Doctor who? The universe has forgotten the Doctor, or so the Doctor hopes. But there are still adventures to be had, evil to be fought, and lives to save. From 1990s Hong Kong, to the depths of space in the far future, and back in time to the Salem witch trials, the Doctor stands firm in his opposition to tyranny and injustice.

1.1 The Final Cut by Lisa McMullin, from a story by Max Kashevsky - Hong Kong 1990. The Doctor answers a call for help from Eleanor Fong, CEO of Fong Enterprises. Only he’s eleven years too late. And in those intervening years she's been busy - helping people to forget.

1.2 The Tourist Trap by Beth Axford - In an attempt to ease Eleanor into time and space travel, the Doctor takes her to Space Florida. Unfortunately, it's not the relaxing paradise he remembers. The holidaymakers are missing, so are the crew, and something monstrous is closing in.

1.3 A Delusion of Witches by Lisa McMullin - As fear rises amid the Salem witch trials of 1692, one woman knows for absolute certainty that it's not witchcraft or devilry people need to fear - it's human beings.

The Final Cut - The (Eleventh) Doctor has lost Amy & Rory, and he hasn’t really started piecing together the mystery of Clara yet. He’s filled with melancholy and traveling alone, what he needs is a new friend. Meet Eleanore Fong. She may be the CEO of a tech firm, but she’s haunted by something she desperately wants to forget. And it’s almost got her. Good thing the Doctor is here to save her. Or is he too late already? A lovely kick off a new new companion, not the best, but it’s fun nonetheless. Miles Taylor does a nice job as The (Eleventh) Doctor, not always ringing precisely true, but more often than not. Oddly enough, Jasmine Bayes, who voices Fong, has a few moments when she sounds just like Clara. Intentional? Let’s hope not. (4/5)

The Tourist Trap - Definitely feels like an Eleventh Doctor episode. Feels a lot like The Girl Who Waited except with Clara. Kind of fell very flat for me, rather like an audio drama featuring the Sixth Doctor in some kind of trial setting. Yawn. Been there done that. Can we move on now? (2/5)

A Delusion of Witches - This one was fine. I appreciated the way it ends. But it still lacked something. I can’t seem to get past how much Eleanor sounds like Clara. I’d really have preferred a more unique, or at least a different sounding, voice. Glad to see a different Doctor in the trail setting (using the sixth is so cliche) and I’m always up for a good witches of Salem story. This one isn’t bad, it just didn’t really get ahold of me. (3/5)

All together? This set didn’t feel like a very strong launch for this series (or is that range?), hopefully the next set will be an improvement.

The bar was set high with the Valerie Lockwood arc of The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles. But in this Eleventh Doctor Adventures series with Miles Taylor, the stories with Eleanor are pretty good so far. While those Chronicles were set after “The Snowmen,” I believe these Adventures are set earlier, after “Asylum of the Daleks,” based on the longline saying people have forgotten The Doctor. Pretty fitting given the first story here is about memory wiping services.

4.25 out of 5 as I think the range is still finding it’s footing but do strongly recommend and am looking forward to more with this team up and what the ongoing story holds.

This one had a lot to live up to for me because the eleventh Doctor has my favorite run on TV as Amy and Rory and eleven are my favorite TARDIS team and Jacob Dudman’s run as eleven with Valerie was outstanding! It’s a good start to the new series and I think Miles Taylor does a good job and just like Jacob will settle into the role better and better as he goes.

I tend to get very attached to Big Finish original companions with a few exceptions and I like that it isn’t an instant connection with Eleanor but that they figure each other out. I think I’m going to enjoy her run.

Miles Taylor turns in an absolutely incredible performance as the 11th Doctor in The First Question.
While the third story starts out a bit slow, and it is basically a bottle episode, the ending is as phenomenal as it is brutal.
We get an incredible new companion who fits right into the style of Eleven’s banter, and the casting of Jasmine Bayes in the role of Ms. Fong was a masterstroke.

MILD SPOILER AHEAD FOR LOCATION/SETTING

If you told me we’d eventually get an audio drama sequel to Ths Beast Below, I don’t think I would have believed you. Even though it doesn’t directly tie in to that TV story, acknowledging Starship Scotland is the kind of reference that brings out the nerd in every listener who’s seen Series 5 of Doctor Who.

Just a great collection all around.

The final question

The first cut

Not completely sold on Myles Taylor as The Doctor, but the script was great (Lisa McMullin writes the best dialogue) and Eleanor Fong is the best companion since Lucie Miller. Four stars.

The Tourist Trap

That was fantastic! Myles seems to have found his voice as The Doctor (pun definitely intended), the script was amazing and Yasmine Bayes is killing it as Eleanor. David Kendal as Ray was the icing on the cake. 4.5 stars.

A delusion of Witches

Damn. That was perfect. Hit me completely in the feels. Fantastic story, dialogue and allegory. Had tears in my eyes at the end. Five stars.

I'm going to say it every time until big finish gets the hint. these Doctor who stories are far too short. they could easily make a 10 or 20 hour audiobook full cast and it would feel like it went by in 10 minutes

the voice actor that played the doctor did a fantastic job

Very good voice actor playing 11. Stories were a mixed bag, quite short. Least favorite was A Delusion of Witches. Tourist Trap was funny, mostly because I live in Florida. 😝
