Running Through Fire

But wait, it gets worse.
That ought to be the slogan for Ava Norcross’ life. After her mother’s untimely death, a teenage Ava finds herself being the primary caregiver to her baby brother while her father drowns his pain in alcohol. Then Ava becomes infamous when nude photos of Ava begin to circulate at school; photos Ava knows she never posed for. Even when forensic investigation shows the photos to be superbly edited fakes, life does not return to normal. Ava’s father hits her more than ever and now the boys at school have started forcibly groping her.

Then, her home burns to the ground with her dad still inside, and the police only have one suspect, Ava. She leaves her hometown to start over as soon as she turns eighteen leaving her baby brother in the capable hands of her aunt and uncle.

Years later, she has carved out a place for herself in true crime journalism. She writes and blog and films summary videos about unsolved cases capitalizing on her unique appearance and her fixation with victims who never saw justice.

Ava meets a man, Brock, who is interested in her work rather than appalled by it. Every interaction they have seems cursed. Brock’s house is broken into, his workplace vandalized, his tires slashed during a date, ending with Brock being attacked and left for dead while his house is set alight.

The attack is the catalyst Ava needs to stop dismissing every irregularity around her apartment as a sign she is drinking herself insane and start to question if someone could be coming and going from her home without her knowing.

Ava returns hometown to force the police to do the investigation they should have done six years ago.
