Under the Rotor: Between Signal and Heartbeat: A Slow-Burn Helicopter Rescue Romance

Rate this book
After a painful breakup, Conny Fischer returns to her hometown hoping for a fresh start — and finds herself in the middle of a helicopter rescue team where every decision can change a life.

Working beside her is Robin Sanders: quick-witted, steady in emergencies, far too charming when the rotor stops turning. His teasing smile unsettles her more than she wants to admit — and the closer they work together, the harder it becomes to ignore the pull between them.

But Conny has been hurt before. Trust doesn’t come easily, especially when feelings appear in the most extraordinary circumstances.

Between missions, unexpected moments, and a wrong locker room, Conny must decide if she’s ready to risk her heart again — or if the past still holds too much power.

A story about quiet courage, unexpected connection, and the kind of love that finds you when you stop running.

As someone who loves emotionally intense stories with damaged characters, Under the Rotor completely pulled all my heartstrings. Claudia Pilon created something that feels so much deeper than just a romance. It’s a story about survival, healing, and what it means to let someone love you when life has already taught you to expect loss. (I can relate to this, as I’m sure many of you can as well.)

Conny’s character broke my heart 💔 You can feel the weight of everything she’s carrying from the very beginning, and watching her try to navigate a high-pressure rescue environment while silently battling her own emotional wounds felt incredibly raw!! She isn’t written as perfect or effortlessly strong, she’s fragile, guarded, stubborn, and deeply relatable!!

Robin… he is the definition of the quiet, protective hero 🦸🏻‍♂️. The way he notices Conny without forcing her to open up made their connection feel so authentic and made my heart melt!! Their romance is a true slow burn built on trust, silent understanding, and emotional intimacy rather than instant attraction. Every small moment between them carried weight, especially because both characters are terrified of vulnerability in different ways.

What made this book stand out for me was how emotional the rescue setting felt. I felt I was a member of the team!! The helicopter missions weren’t just action scenes, they constantly reminded the characters how fragile life really is. Beneath all the chaos, danger, and adrenaline, there’s this deeply tender story about two people learning they don’t have to survive alone anymore. There’s something so beautiful about that!
The emotional tension throughout the book still hurts as I’m writing this 🙈. There were moments where you could feel the fear, exhaustion, longing, and love sitting unspoken between them, and it made the payoff at the end feel earned instead of rushed. (Is she writing a story about my past life 🤔)

By the final chapters, I honestly felt emotionally attached to the entire rescue crew. The found-family dynamic added so much warmth to an otherwise heavy story, and the ending left me with that bittersweet feeling that comes from watching characters finally choose healing over fear.

Under the Rotor is perfect for readers who love:
emotional slow burns
protective heroes
hurt/comfort romance
found family
trauma healing arcs
high-stakes rescue settings
quiet, devastating emotional intimacy

This story feels like standing beneath spinning rotor blades while your heart quietly falls apart and heals at the same time

🚁❤️ Under the Rotor: Between Signal and Heartbeat by Claudia Pilon

What happens when danger, duty, and undeniable chemistry collide? 🚁💕 Under the Rotor: Between Signal and Heartbeat follows Conny and Robin as they navigate life in emergency rescue services, where high-stakes missions and growing feelings become impossible to ignore. Between life-saving calls and heartfelt moments, their connection slowly takes flight.

This book gave me all the cozy Hallmark movie vibes with a healthy dose of tension-filled romance. 🥰 The chemistry between Conny and Robin was sweet, and their back-and-forth banter kept me smiling. There is definitely a slow burnhere, but the romantic tension makes the wait worth it.

🚁💕 Tropes:
🛟 Protective MMC
❤️‍🔥 Slow Burn
😂 Lots of Banter
😍 He Fell First
🏡 Found Family
🚁 High-Stakes Rescue Missions

One of my favorite parts was all of the emergency missions. They added excitement and kept the story moving, making me eager to see where the next call would take these characters. I also loved how much Paul rooted for Conny and Robin to get together. His enthusiasm was adorable, although some of his meddling and silliness wasn't always my favorite.

While I really enjoyed this debut novel, there were moments where it felt like the author knew exactly what she wanted to say, but some little transitions or connecting sentences were missing. For me, it was like walking into a room in the middle of a conversation—you might have missed a few moments, but you're still able to understand everything that's happening. Thankfully, it never took away too much from the overall experience.

And that ending?! 😱 This story leaves readers with a bit of a cliffhanger, which means I'm definitely picking up book two because I need more adventures with Conny and Robin.

✨ Don't sleep on this one if you love:
💖 Cozy romance
🚁 First responder romances
❤️ Tension-filled slow burns
👨‍👩‍👧 Found family
🥰 Hallmark-style vibes
🚨 Action-packed rescue missions

For a debut novel, I truly think this is just the beginning. I can already see so many more adventures ahead for these characters, and I'm excited to see where Claudia Pilon takes them next.

THANK YOU FOR THIS ARC!

Under the Rotor was the first “first responder” novel I’ve read!
As a retired Air Force flight medic/first responder, I can definitely have a hard time reading them, simply because of accuracy around medical procedures regarding trauma patients.

While I try to separate fact from fiction, it’s just a personal quirk of mine that I have when reading something regarding a profession I used to work in. Under the Rotor didn’t have any glaring flaws around this, just a few little things which make the fiction part of it more interesting and gives the characters some depth!

Overall, I enjoyed the healthy banter in this book and I’m always a sucker for a he falls first love! The focus of search and rescue via flight for life was a super fresh take that I loved. (Might also be the flight medic bias in me🙂‍↕️)

I really loved the representation of some scenes and calls having a profound effect on the mental health of first responders. That’s important for me.

Some minor editing can be done in the writing, but that’s also a matter of personal preference. It’s a great starter book for this genre though, and the ending leaves you seriously begging for more! ✨

🚁 I really wanted this one to work for me… but it ended up being a DNF.

Under the Rotor: Between Signal and Heartbeat follows Conny Fischer as she joins a helicopter rescue team, where high-pressure emergency calls become part of her everyday life. Along the way, she meets Robin Sanders, and a slow-burn romance begins to develop against the backdrop of their demanding careers.

What I liked:

* The helicopter rescue setting is unique and offers a fresh backdrop for a romance.
* The premise had a lot of potential, especially if you enjoy workplace romances and first responder stories.

Why it didn’t work for me:

* Unfortunately, I had to DNF this one at 30% because I just couldn’t connect with the writing style.
* The writing felt too choppy for me, and it kept pulling me out of the story instead of letting me get immersed in it.
* That’s a personal preference, though, so your experience may be completely different.

If the premise sounds like your kind of book, it may still be worth giving it a try.

A fun, sweet romance with a fantastic team! ❤️

I really enjoyed Conny and Robin’s story. One of my favourite things was seeing how devoted they were to their work as paramedics. The way they showed up for people in their most difficult moments made them feel like real angels in distress.

I also loved the team dynamics. The chemistry between the team members was so much fun, and they genuinely felt like the best team. And Paul! 😂 He was probably the most annoying character, but somehow in the most charming way.

Conny and Robin’s relationship had its share of ups and downs, but I really enjoyed watching their love story unfold. The little moments — the coffee, the locker room scenes, and all those cute interactions — were especially heart-warming.

Overall, this was such a fun and easy read with plenty of sweetness, romance, and lovely character moments. And after that thoughtful proposal, I’m definitely curious to see what happens next! ❤️

Sweet, funny, slow burn romance

I enjoyed this romance about colleagues in a rescue helicopter team. Conny and Robin are professionals, so despite their immediate attraction, their relationship is slow to begin. Over time the details of their individual histories and emotions are revealed so that the reader better understands each of them.

The ensemble cast of characters, from the office clown Paul to the father-figure Martin, are all highly involved and invested in the couple’s romance. There is added intrigue with Conny’s ex as well as the danger involved in the job that makes the book more interesting.

Overall, I enjoyed the banter and could picture the base and how the team operated.

Spice level: 🌶
M/F

This book is the definition of "slow burn," the author took her time in creating the relationship between the main characters. Nothing about their time spent getting to know one another was rushed, it was organic and real.

There were some points in the book that had some snarky banter and I loved the heck out it!

If you're looking for a romance book that is not a sports romance, not a dark romance and a romance that heals and teaches you things you didn't know about yourself this one is for you!!!

What stands out most is the pacing of the relationship. It doesn’t rush. The emotional progression feels gradual, shaped by small moments glances, conversations, and the kind of tension that builds when two people are trying not to feel something.
