Damaged By Necessity : A Stone Cold Love Story

Rate this book
She was building a name out of the pieces they left behind.
He was learning to live without the noise that used to define him.

When Gina Thompson and A’shai Blaze met again, it didn’t feel new.
It felt like a pause finally unbroken, like the story they left hanging was ready to speak.

They moved in contradictions:
Laughter under pressure.
Touch where pain lived.
Truth between the kind of silence that could swallow you whole.

Maybe they weren’t meant to save each other.
Maybe love was never the goal, just the consequence.

Because sometimes the heart doesn’t heal by holding on.
It heals by breaking beautifully.

This is their necessity.
Their truth.
Their Stone Cold Love Story.

Thank you to the publisher, BRBF Book Tours and the author for my ARC!

There are books that you read, enjoy, and move on from… and then there are books like Damaged by Necessity that settle into your chest and rearrange the furniture a little. Lamartz Brown doesn’t just give us a romance here, he gives us pressure, consequence, and the kind of emotional weight that lingers long after the last page.

At the center of it all is Gina Thompson, a woman who feels like she’s been carrying the world on her back for a long time, even before the story really begins. Gina is not written as fragile or easily folded. She’s resilient in that quiet, exhausted way where strength isn’t loud anymore, it’s just survival. You can feel how much she’s had to endure, and how carefully she moves through life because one wrong shift could send everything crashing.

And then there’s A’Shai Blaze. His name alone fits the energy he brings into the story: intense, controlled, and unpredictable in the way emotions try not to show their full hand but still slip through the cracks. A’Shai is layered in a way that keeps you watching him closely. He’s not simple, not predictable, and definitely not someone you can fully define in one pass. He carries his own history, his own weight, and it shapes how he shows up in every interaction with Gina.

What makes their dynamic so compelling is that it doesn’t feel like it was built for convenience. It feels like collision. Gina and A’Shai don’t just meet, they navigate each other, like two forces trying to figure out whether they’re meant to clash, align, or somehow do both at the same time. The tension between them is constant, but it’s not always loud. Sometimes it’s in the restraint. Sometimes it’s in what they refuse to say out loud.

Brown does a really strong job of leaning into emotional realism. This isn’t a polished, effortless love story. It’s layered with decisions that come with consequences, and relationships that are shaped as much by circumstance as they are by feeling. You get the sense that both Gina and A’Shai are constantly balancing what they want against what they think they can afford to want.

The romance itself is not soft in the traditional sense. It’s more like something that forms in the middle of survival. There are moments where you feel the pull between them so clearly it almost feels intrusive, like you’re witnessing something private and fragile at the same time. And yet, it never feels rushed or forced. It builds in a way that makes you understand why these two would keep circling each other, even when it complicates everything else in their lives.

One of the strongest aspects of Damaged by Necessity is how it allows imperfection to exist without trying to smooth it over. Gina and A’Shai both make choices that aren’t easy to sit with. Sometimes you understand them immediately, sometimes you sit back and question them, but either way, they feel human. That’s what makes the story stick.

By the end, you’re not just closing a book. You’re sitting with the echo of it. Thinking about necessity, about damage, and about how people can still find connection in the middle of all that.

If you’re drawn to romance that is emotionally layered, tension-heavy, and rooted in real human messiness rather than fairytale ease, Damaged by Necessity delivers exactly that.

Damaged by Necessity was a layered and ambitious read that ultimately left me with mixed feelings.

I went into this expecting a strong, cohesive story and while the book definitely delivered on drama, emotion, and plot twists, the overall execution felt uneven.

What worked for me:
There were moments in this book that genuinely stood out. The emotional depth surrounding Gina’s family, particularly the trauma and loss she experiences, was one of the strongest parts of the story. Those scenes felt raw, impactful, and grounded in a way that made them memorable.

I also appreciated the dynamic between Gina and Ashai. Ashai, in particular, is a layered character, balancing a street-hardened exterior with moments of vulnerability and growth. Their relationship had chemistry and progression, especially when it shifted from purely physical to something more intentional.
The book also incorporates elements of suspense and mystery that kept me engaged, especially as the stakes increased and more information about the characters’ pasts began to unfold.

Where it fell short:
The biggest issue for me was focus and structure.
This story tries to do a lot at once, blending romance, trauma, crime, mystery, and family drama but instead of these elements weaving together seamlessly, it often felt like multiple storylines competing for attention.

At times, the transitions between scenes were abrupt, jumping from one major moment to another without fully developing or allowing those moments to breathe. This created a sense of disjointed pacing, where the story felt both rushed in some areas and overly drawn out in others.

The ending, in particular, felt unnecessarily extended. Just when it seemed like the story had reached a natural conclusion, it continued with multiple epilogues, which diluted the overall impact rather than strengthening it.

Additionally, while some of the plot twists were interesting in concept, they didn’t always feel fully built up or earned within the narrative. This made certain reveals feel more reactive than intentional.

Overall thoughts:
Damaged by Necessity has strong ideas, compelling moments, and characters with real potential. However, the story would have benefited from a tighter focus, particularly if it leaned more fully into its themes of trauma, identity, and healing rather than trying to balance so many different plotlines at once.

This was not a bad read by any means, it kept me engaged and curious about what would happen next but it didn’t fully come together in a way that elevated it beyond a solid middle-ground rating.

Final Rating: 3/5 ⭐️
Engaging and dramatic, but ultimately uneven in execution.

Damaged by Necessity completely took me on a rollercoaster of emotions from beginning to end. This isn’t one of those light, easy romance reads you can breeze through without feeling anything—it digs deep and stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. The emotional weight of this story is something I know will stick in my mind for a long time.

What really stood out to me is how raw and real everything felt. The characters aren’t perfect, and their journeys aren’t sugar-coated. Every emotion—grief, love, pain, healing—felt genuine and earned. The story is beautifully layered, gradually revealing the depth of each character and their struggles in a way that pulls you in more and more with each chapter.

This book touches on so many meaningful themes: grief, friendship, found family, and the complicated process of understanding what love truly is—and even harder, learning how to accept it. It also explores childhood trauma from both sides in a way that feels honest and impactful, showing how the past can shape people while still leaving room for growth.

At its core, this is a story about self-discovery and rebuilding—learning from the past, facing difficult truths, and finding the strength to move forward. The relationships in this book evolve in such a realistic way, making every moment of connection and reconciliation feel incredibly rewarding.

If you’re looking for a romance that goes beyond surface-level and really makes you feel, Damaged by Necessity delivers something powerful and unforgettable.

3.75⭐️ Thank you Lamartz Brown and BRBF Book Tours for this ARC. This was given in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, Gina and A’Shai went through it! The grief and pain was palpable. There was a lot of character growth and increased emotional intelligence needed. Especially for A’Shai. They both had rough backgrounds albeit very different from each other. But it felt like A’Shai had a lot more unlearning to do. I loved that they had Mona and Mega with similar backstories who could model a better life for them. Mona and Mega gave them hope that life could be about more than just survival.

This was a heavy love story with realistic reactions to the hardships life can throw at you. It’s also a wonderful story about building a found family.

Now there were a few things I was not a fan of
- I understand the point of the“Girl, Don’t Trip” snippets at the beginning of Gina’s chapters but I didn’t think they were necessary.
- There were so many references! Musicians, actors, songs. It just became too much after a point.
- There were too many designer names thrown out. I get it, they’re rich.

Some plot points that stood out to me
- I kinda wish they had figured out the plan instead of Pillar giving all the backstory like an evil villain.
- I also hate that when Gina was kidnapped and thrown in the van, he made a point to mention her hands and feet were untied but she never thought to take the tape and bag off her head. That was a dumb choice for someone so smart and vigilant.
- I needed A’Shai to sit in the emotional moments. He was always so quick to turn things sexual.

This book was a slow start for me but overall I did enjoy this story.

From the very beginning, A’Shai and Gina’s physical chemistry is absolutely oozing off the pages. Their connection starts purely physical, and honestly, that works because life has already thrown everything, including the kitchen sink, at both of them. They’re each focused on personal growth, survival, and reaching their own goals, so love isn’t exactly the priority, especially when they’re both unsure if A’Shai can truly be the man Gina needs. But through quiet moments, shared vulnerability, and time spent together, both alone and with their close-knit circle, they become such a powerful example of patience in love, reminding us that sometimes love means giving someone the space to grow, step up, and become the partner you need, if they’re willing.

What truly gives this story its emotional depth is watching both Gina and A’Shai confront the wounds of their childhoods. Seeing them battle emotional trauma, wrestle with the examples set by the adults before them, and actively choose not to let their pain dictate their future was incredibly moving.

I absolutely loved how unpredictable and deeply layered this story is. There’s romance, mystery and suspense, humor, grief, found family, childhood trauma, healing your inner child… heavy on the intimacy and spice. It’s everything you could ask for, and I had a time.

Jesus ✝️, Joseph, Mary, and the Lamb 🐑

This book was so good!!! Starting from the 1st chapter with the "Porch" scene. I was literally in tears laughing because I was actually visualizing it 😂 In this story we follow Gina Thompson and A’shai Blaze, two people who are making an attempt to rebuild themselves from past traumas.

My girl Gina was a strong and determined woman that knew what she wanted and refused to follow in her mother's footsteps. Did she has issues to work through? Yes, but she wasn't looking to be saved but more so wanting a partner to weather the storm with her. ⛈️💁🏾‍♀️

A'shai a man of action, a protector, and follows his own rules doesn't know how to feel with his heart due to his his background. A man determined to battle the Choas of choosing love or believing love doesn't want him. 🫀💔

The pacing of the book? Perfect 👌🏾
The plot? Top notch 🤌🏾
Character development? On point 👉🏾
Did I see the twist and turns coming? Absolutely NOT 😏
Did I have unanswered questions? Nope, and I love that for me 🤎
Do I have to go read Blank Canvas of You? Yup 🙂‍↕️

Overall, this isn't your typical love story, it's a mix of hard and soft; gritty and smooth; exciting and powerful💪🏾........This is my 1st read by Lamartz and I'm truly happy I had the opportunity to witness his pen game 🖊️

Girl, They Were Damaged!

Damaged by Necessity was a roller coaster of a ride. If you enjoy reading drama, men with slick mouths who don’t play about you, spice and found family, then there’s something for you here! I liked the chemistry of Gina and A’Shai and the evolution of their relationship. They both got a dose of what it means to find healthy love and not just running off of survival. Their friends Mega and Mona provided the wisdom needed to navigate this new territory: moving into a life of love, ease and genuine support.

With that being said there are a two things (for ME) that would’ve taken this read from a 3.75 to a 4+ rating.

While it is a spinoff, the book says you don’t need to read the first installment. I probably should have lol. I spent the first 15% trying to figure out the genesis of Gina and A’Shai. I was left guessing on how they met (more than just their first escapade). Throughout we learned about Gina’s upbringing & got flashbacks, but I feel like I was missing pieces of A’Shai’s past without having read the first book in the series.

I also didn’t quite vibe with all of the “Girl, Don’t Trip” excerpts from the blog. There were so many references to sht that I got dizzy lmaooo.

Overall a good read! I’m planning to go back and read Mona and Mega’s story. Thank you to Lamartz Brown and BRBF Book Tours for the arc!

Thanks to the BRBF I received the ARC for Damaged By Necessity.

Here are some of the themes you might find in this book:
- personal growth
- friends as family
- suicidal (not between main characters)
- murder
- abuse (not between main characters)

From the beginning I could tell that A’shai and Gina were both type A personalities. Gina is an influencer whose claim to fame is being a straight shooter. A’shai is that literally but his character seems to be trying to redefine who he is outside of who he’s been nurtured to be and who he has always been.

Both of their journeys, in my opinion, are about not letting your past and trauma define you.

Some of the chapters have intro pieces. For Gina’s they seemed to be part of her content but I found they didn’t always align with what was happening in the text. For A’shai’s intro pieces, they just seemed repetitive.

The plot was somewhat all over the place. I remember feeling like “dang they’re getting hit from all angles”. However, it became clear closer to the end how the ops were connected.

On the character development, there were moments where Gina’s outburst felt dramatic and A’shai seemed to be making the most personal growth that could be seen on paper.

Some gaps I would’ve love to have seen filled were more on Ruby and A’shai’s relationship there and better understanding of the dynamic between the General and Gina. Also where did the name Mean Daddy come from? lol These pieces were mentioned but never truly flushed out.

Overall, I really, really liked the book and I’d recommend it to other readers who like an urban romance vibe.

First of all, i would like to thank BRBF and Lamartz Brown ARC!

This is the type of book that has you thinking about it. This book has not only a romance, but all the real and raw complexities that come with it.

The story follows A’shai and Gina who have a little something going on but each have their own personal issues to deal with.
A’shai is a straight business, intense, hardened man. His past has caused him to live life without emotion, never letting his guard down or anyone in, but this becomes more difficult the more he gets to know Gina.

Gina is a strong, confident, boss who tries to take the cards she’s been dealt in life and uses that to hello and inspire women. She also keeps her guard up, careful not to let anyone in that might hurt her or waste her time.

The connection between them is so undeniable, no matter how hard they both try to deny it, they can’t help the love that grows between them. This story shows a love that is emotional and not always easy. They battle their pasts and try to overcome all of that with self-discovery and vulnerability and really explore the true love they feel.

This story definitely kept me on my toes because there were so many unexpected and suspenseful moments all tied in. This story definitely takes you on an emotional journey and really makes you think, it sticks with you. Definitely one you need to read!

I received this ARC from BRBF Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.

This book had an interesting premise that kept me invested enough to finish the story, and I can appreciate the creativity behind the plot itself. But the writing style unfortunately did not work for me. I found the storytelling lacked depth and emotional connection, which made it difficult to fully engage with the characters and their experiences.

While the overall concept had potential, the execution just wasn’t strong enough for me personally. This was my first book by this author, and although I was able to push through because I wanted to see how the story unfolded, I don’t think I’ll be giving him another read in the future.

That said, readers who enjoy fast-paced stories and focus more on plot than writing style may find something to enjoy here.

A’Shai and Gina’s story of grief, childhood trauma, growth, and love was heavy—but necessary. It started off slow, and I wasn’t sure where it was going, but once it picked up, I was fully invested. The themes of romantic suspense, found family, survival, and self-discovery were well done.

Gina is an FMC who will stick with me. Despite her family dysfunction and trauma, she didn’t let it define her. She had a big heart, stood up for herself, and didn’t tolerate disrespect—I loved that about her.

A’Shai’s story is one we need to hear more from men. His transition from a dangerous street lifestyle to a more legitimate life—where he realizes he deserves more—felt realistic. His trauma ran deep and hardened him, but with Gina, he began to soften while working on his own healing. The accountability she held him to felt balanced—she stood firm while still giving grace.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read.

Thank you to BRBF Tours for the ARC copy. This ARC was given in exchange for my honest review. I went into Damaged by Necessity really wanting to love it, and there were definitely moments when I felt myself getting pulled in. Brown has a way of capturing emotional tension that feels lived‑in, and a few scenes hit harder than I expected. But I also found myself drifting at times—some chapters felt a little scattered, and I struggled to stay fully connected to the characters’ choices.
Still, I’m glad I read it. There’s a sincerity in the writing that stuck with me even when the pacing didn’t.

Gina and A’Shai

OK, so I went into this book knowing Gina and A’Shai were very outspoken in their own right, but what I got was their individual why. A’Shai was hard because he had to be. In this story, we got to see the man after going legit. A’Shai working for somebody was crazy to me because I knew that wouldn’t last long. I just wanted to hug Gina because she went through so much all while being the most loyal friend ever. We don’t get to choose our parents, but man, they did her bad for no reason. I enjoyed this book, and I’m glad everyone got the clarity they needed.

First I want to thank Lamartz Brown for sending me this ARC, in exchange for a honest review.

This is my first book by the author, and it most definitely won't be my last.

Damaged by Necessity, that in itself is a great title and I loved how it tied into both characters and their individual stories. This story follows the MC's Ashai Blaze and Gina Thompson. At the start of this book, they are kind of in a friends with benefits situation. This is an interconnected standalone so if you want more of the characters backstory definitely read book 1-Blank Canvas of You (I wasn't able to do so before diving into this Arc) but I was still able to get a good understanding of both of them. Ashai is the type of MMC who uses sex to deflect, swears he would never be in a relationship, or have kids etc, which is to no fault of his own as he had a tough upbringing and no good example of what love is. Gina while dealing with some childhood trauma of her own, is a boss chick, confident, runs her own business; and while she is attracted to Ashai, she also knows he is not ready for a woman like her, and has expectations on what she deserves, and how she wants to be treated.

This book takes you on a journey, not just a love story; but shows how if you don't deal with trauma/damages, they can fester as well as carry into who you're trying to be in the current season of your life. Ashai is from the streets, but with the help of his best friend he is trying to go legal, and take a different path. He has dreams of running his own real estate company, but per usual the moment you try to do something good the past has a way of always popping up. This book is packed with unexpected plot twists, family drama, grief, secrets, a little messy and a whole lot of suspense. On the other hand it had resilience, survival, found family, sister & brotherhood, healing, creating your own path, and a love story between the two main characters .

I really love how the author divided this into different stages, ties different stages of each character's life into their growth and their growing love for each other. I could tell he put a lot of care and thought into each character. If you love an urban fiction/romance with a lot of depth and added suspense you will definitely enjoy this one.

Damaged by Necessity has so many layers to the story! A'shai a complexed man that's not looking for love and family because of the street lifestyle he is involved in. Gina a social influencer with layers of family trauma tied to her. Both characters are dealing with being products of their environments. The heavy burdens of loyalty and choices forced upon those with limited options.

What I enjoyed about this story was how author Lamar's was able to humanize the street hustle without glamorizing it. He delves deep into the psychological toll that survival takes on A'shai, illustrating how every calculated move in the streets leaves a permanent mark on the soul. The prose is punchy and authentic, mirroring the fast paced, high stakes atmosphere of his lifestyle while maintaining a sense of emotional weight. It’s a story where "damage" isn't just a consequence it’s a prerequisite for enduring a landscape that demands everything from you.

Overall, it stands out for me because of its heart and its honesty. I can see myself relating to Gina and while understand A'shai with his choice he makes. While it delivers the expected tension and drama of a street thriller, it elevates itself through its exploration of the "why" behind the "what." Brown forces the reader to confront the reality that many are shaped by forces beyond their control, making the book a compelling, thought provoking read. It is a testament to resilience and the often painful transformation required to rise above one's circumstances.

P.S This book is spicy! A'shai and Gina do be getting it in!

Damaged by Necessity was my first read by Lamrtz Brown and won't be my last. This book took me on a hell of an emotional ride from beginning to end. This isn’t your light, fluffy romance this is a hard, raw, emotional and rough story.

A’Shai and Gina aren’t perfect, and nothing about their journeys is sugar coated. This story touches on every emotion from: grief, love, pain, healing. As the story progresses, another layer to each character is removed, revealing more truth, more depth, and more of their past.

The story reflects on so many powerful themes: grief, friendship, family, and the complicated process of understanding love and even harder, learning how to accept it and how to give love. The childhood trauma that Gina and A'shai suffered felt real and showed why they were the way they were as adults.

This book is about rebuilding yourself: facing hard truths, learning from what broke you, and finding the strength to move forward. The relationships grow in such a natural, believable way that every moment of connection or reconciliation feels meaningful. Especially for Gina and A'shai, they suffered through a lot growing up as kids.

If you’re looking for a romance that isn't all lovey dovey, fluff but has real emotions then pick up Damaged by Necessity. I’m excited to dive into more of Lamartz's catalogue. Thank you to Lamartz Brown and BRBF Book Tours for the ARC. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable read.

Received an ARC in Exchange for an honest review

Damage by Necessity is one of those books that slowly pulls you in until you realize you’re fully invested in everybody’s lives and drama. This story is about healing, vulnerability, chosen family, and learning how to let people love you fully.

Shai and Gina’s relationship development was honestly my favorite part of the book. I loved how layered both of them felt, especially Shai. This book really showed that strength, trauma and pain both black women and men are often forced to carry and navigate. We see both Shai and Gina become vulnerable, let their guard down, and find someone who makes them feel safe enough to soften a little. Gina balanced him well, and their growth together felt natural instead of forced.

There were so many highs, lows, messy moments, emotional turns, and unexpected twists that kept me hooked. Every time I thought things were finally calming down, something else would happen. The story definitely kept me entertained and wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I also really loved the chosen family aspect of the story. The book does a good job showing that blood family is not always your best or healthiest option, and sometimes the people who become your real family are the ones who consistently show up for you.

My only real issue was that the book felt a little long at times. Some parts felt more wordy than they needed to be, which slowed the pacing for me here and there. But overall, the emotional depth, character development, and all the drama made it worth the read.

Damaged by Necessity by Lamartz Brown was a messy, emotional roller coaster in the best way. This is my first book by the author, but it definitely won’t be my last.

This friends-with-benefits-to-lovers story delivered drama, spice, suspense, found family, and real emotional depth. Gina and A’Shai were both strong personalities learning what love looks like beyond survival, and I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow. I especially loved Gina as a self-made FMC who never needed saving. Mega and Mona also brought heart, wisdom, and balance to the chaos in the story.

What stood out most was the focus on trauma, healing, and personal growth. The characters felt flawed and real, which made their journeys believable and engaging.

That said, the plot sometimes felt a bit all over the place, and a few of the blog/intro excerpts didn’t fully connect for me. I also wish certain relationships and backstories had been explored more.

Even so, I really enjoyed this read and would recommend it to readers who love gritty urban romance with drama, chemistry, and emotional stakes. I also think reading the first book would’ve helped me connect more to A’Shai’s backstory.

Overall, a strong read, and I’ll definitely be checking out Mona and Mega’s story next.

Thank you Lamartz Brown and BRBF Book Tours for this this ARC.

Damaged by Necessity by Lamartz Brown is my first book by the author but definitely WILL NOT be my last. This story dives deep into pain, survival, and the tough choices people make when life backs them into a corner. And let me start by saying the FMC is a boss on her own. She is not a damsel in need of rescuing. She is self made and has own which I LOVE!!

This is a Friends “with benefits” to Lovers story. The characters feel raw, real, flawed, guarded, and shaped by everything they’ve endured. Lamart does an amazing job showing how trauma can influence decisions, relationships, and the way people love (or struggle to).

What I loved most was the balance between grit and vulnerability. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, the story pulls you deeper, reminding you that healing isn’t linear and sometimes survival comes at a cost. It’s not just a love story, there is suspense at every turn and the people behind everything is the least expected.

If you love emotional, street-lit (yes I’m showing my age because that’s what it was before it was all labeled Urban Fiction) stories with depth, heartbreak, and real life stakes, this one is a MUST read.

Review of advance copy received from Author
April 14, 2026
Damaged by Necessity by Lamartz Brown is an emotionally charged story centered on two wounded protagonists, Ashai and Gina Thompson, who are both grappling with trauma and a lack of past protection. The novel's greatest strength lies in its authentic portrayal of emotional vulnerability and the strong support systems found in the characters' friendships, such as the sisterhood between Gina and Mona. The plot effectively balances Gina's rising influencer career and Ashai's transition into legitimate business with a layer of intrigue involving disappearances at a construction site and a well-timed twist in the final act.

Despite its compelling core, the manuscript faces challenges with wordiness and a lack of clear genre identity, shifting between romance, suspense, and drama. Certain recurring metaphors and analogies clash with the romantic tone, and some intimate scenes lean toward a playful style that undercuts the emotional stakes. However, the manuscript's strong dialogue and deeply resonant themes of survival and self-discovery provide a solid foundation for a powerful and impactful story with further refinement

The MMC is A'Shai Blaze and the FMC is.

What happens when those we call family hurt us the most? You learn to adapt and sometimes in ways you never imagined. When you bottle those emotions up and stuff them down so deep, it becomes almost impossible to pull them out. A'Shai Blaze has ensured a lot of pain and turned it into something lethal. He's moved through life and only cares for a a select handful of people, which soon includes Gina Thompson. Gina grew up with Love until one day it was snatched away. Her life from that point on became an unrecognizable nightmare. These two are like a moth to a flame. This dangerous attractions feels so good but has serious consequences. This was a story about heartbreak, loss, grief and redemption. The two main characters are both struggling with the wounds of both the past and present, while their feelings deepen with each passing day. As danger and death surrounds them both, it becomes a fight to determine if the love is worth the risk. I see why this was a romance and suspense novel. There are several secrets, plot twists and aha moments that keep this read interesting.

Damaged by Necessity
Lamartz Brown

A’Shai has survived by being exactly as dangerous as he needs to be. His abandonment issues have required him to be intentional about who he allows to be in his space. In this new season, Gina brings out emotions in him that he thought couldn’t possibly exist. He has to reason with the fact that her devotion will demand that he address his traumas.

Gina has persevered through the chaos of her parents union. Despite their mistreatment, she shows them love. Gina uses her circumstances as motivation for herself. She isn’t stingy about disclosing the wrongness of her struggles to help others.

There is a lot of craziness happening. Between the progression of their careers and the past seeking vengeance, there is no dull moment. This is not a slow burn by any stretch of the imagination. The pacing is appropriate given the many topics addressed.

A’Shai and Gina find a way to survive grave disappointment. While so many factors effect their communication, they are tasked with deciding whether they can be trusted with each other’s heart.

Some stories do not simply ask to be read. They ask to be felt.

Damaged by Necessity is layered with raw truth, emotional depth, and characters so beautifully human that their pain, healing, longing, and resilience seep through every page and settle directly into your spirit. These characters were not written to be perfect. They were written to survive. And that survival carried a tenacity so powerful it reached beyond the pages and into my heart.

What stood out most to me was the complexity the characters faced in their lives. Every emotion felt intentional. Every wound carried weight. Every moment of healing felt earned. This story reminds us that people can be both broken and becoming at the same time.

As I turned each page, I found myself reflecting on how often strength is born from the very places we try hardest to hide. Lamartz Brown captured that truth with honesty and care!

Thank you BRBF Book Tours for this gem!

First and foremost, I want to thank BRBF Book Tours and Lamartz Brown for the ARC.
What a ride! There are so many ups and downs in this book, covering both main characters complicated pasts. Gina coming from with a physically and verbally abusive father and mother who is subservient to him and A’Shai struggling with the lack of parental guidance and strong reliance on street mentality to get by. Both find solace and comfort in one another but leading with the ghost of their past when it comes to fostering a relationship. The spice is SPICY but there are a lot of plot jumping points without details or clarification for build-up causing it feel sudden with an underwhelming ending. I also think Gina’s post could have been shorter and found them to be distracting when they popped up. Overall, entertaining book and a first book for me for Lamartz Brown. Open to reading more from his catalog.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It’s been a while since I read a book that truly had me captivated like this! The roll coaster of emotions that I went through reading was insane. It did start off a little slow for me but once it picked up I was locked in! Once I started reading it was so hard to put it down.

This was not your usual love story which I can appreciate. Amongst the romance there were so many other elements of the book. I loved the mystery/thriller components. I feel like it really added something unique to the story as a whole.

A’shai and Gina’s story had me in my feelings! They both went through so much and came out stronger on the other side!

This was my first read by this author and it will definitely not be my last. I am for sure adding the first book of this series to my TBR!

This should definitely be one of your next reads!

A’shai and Gina are two souls wrapped in family trauma and life’s chaos, each fighting to find their purpose in the world. A’shai is held captive by the streets, where emotions feel foreign to him. While the family he’s created begins showing him new levels of growth and love, his past keeps digging its claws in deeper. The struggle to choose a different path becomes even harder when his and Gina’s lives are threatened. Gina, the ever so fabulous diva, lives life on her own terms. But even she can’t escape the terrible cards life sometimes deals. Still, she remains resilient. Her emotional intelligence won’t allow her to be manipulated or played with. There’s strength in her softness. To reach the beautiful side of finding love and truly being in love, the pain and damage they endured became necessary for their growth.

I first would like to say thank you to Lamartz Brown and BRBF for the privilege to read this as an ARC!

Damaged by Necessity was an emotional, drama filled read centered around healing, vulnerability, chosen family, and learning to let people love and support you. I really enjoyed watching Shai and Gina’s relationship develop and seeing both characters slowly let their guards down with each other. The story was full of twists, messy moments, and emotional highs and lows that kept me invested the entire time. While the pacing felt a little slow in some areas, the character growth and emotional depth made it worth the read overall.

Enjoyed the journey with A'Shai and Gina. Having a front row seat to their growth and love was special. The side characters added so much flavor to the story. I am secretly looking for an origin story for Legend. Lol. There are some serious situations in this story that stretch the characters in ways they didn’t know they could bend as well as thrive. Do yourself a favor and dive into this world of love, redemption, vulnerability, passion, strong family, strong friendship, intrigue, murder and other jewels that will keep you turning the pages to answer the question who done it.
