I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
I was excited to start this as the first book in a new series, and the concept drew me in right away, especially the blend of magic within a modern setting.
What worked for me: • The overall plot and premise were engaging. I typically enjoy crime thrillers and the idea of magic mixed in and a warlock detective was super cool! • The worldbuilding was creative, especially the way magic was woven into a contemporary world. Especially the political ramifications and how lawmakers might handle magical beings. • The individual characters were interesting and had strong potential. Once established, the relationship between Drake and Brooklynne worked really well.
What didn’t work as well for me: • The book would have benefitted from more thorough proofreading and editing; there were multiple typos and instances of incorrect word usage that pulled me out of the story. • The romance between Drake and Brooklyn felt rushed and sudden, and the danger meant to bring them together didn’t feel fully realized on the page. I just didn't feel that heat of the moment, just escaped a super dangerous situation rush of passion. Their relationship just came together a little too quickly for me. • The pacing was slow at times, and I struggled to stay fully invested.
I give this 3 stars. While this wasn’t a perfect read for me, I still see a lot of promise and potential for the series. The worldbuilding and core concept were strong, and with tighter editing and more developed relationship dynamics, future installments could really shine. Readers who enjoy modern‑magic settings and character‑driven plots may still find a lot to appreciate here.
A crime thriller mixed with magic? Sign me up!!!! I really wish this had been longer because it was great!!! I loved the twist even if it was a bit predictable to me at least. Then the characters were perfection!!! Brooke and Drake were a hilarious dou. Though I do absolutely hate her full name. Im so ready for whatever this author writes next.
This was a great easy read to break up one of the more in depth epic fantasy series I tend to read. This catered more to my personal background in LE and the ideas in the story were new. I enjoyed to new take on integrating the modern world to magic and potions. Really enjoyed the banter between rhe characters and look forward to the next in the series. I liked that it wrapped up the immediate story that started the book but the overlying theme which is what I think the series is going to run with is still there and still worth reading g more about. Overall a very enjoyable read and break up of other series if your reading those and need a brain break. Happy reading g everyone!
I absolutely loved this book! The atmosphere was magical, and completely captivating from the very first pages. I felt pulled into a world full of secrets, danger, and mystery, and the story kept me hooked the entire time.
I truly hope the next book focuses more on Brooklynne’s sister, I would love to learn more about her story.
This was an interesting take on today’s life but with magic. It can be read as a stand alone and I took it as such despite the apparent series number. It didn’t hook me as a series and I appreciate that. I would definitely keep going but also don’t feel like I’m missing anything if I don’t.
The Apothecary's Dark Fate is a really fun and at times action-packed tale of a girl trying to find and save her missing sister.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are likable and make you really care what happens to them. Brooklynne is a brave and feisty character, but it doesn't really feel forced like it can sometimes be when an author is writing a strong woman character. Drake seems kind of like a typical smug strong guy, but there's much more than what's on the surface. He's written to have dark secrets that endanger him and anyone who knows about them, which makes it hard for him to open up to anyone. This combined with Brooke's own fear of heartbreak make them an unlikely pair - but one that you really enjoy to read about.
The story itself is enticing and interesting throughout. For the majority of the book, when they're looking for Melanie, you're kept in the dark as to where she is, which makes the mystery feel realistic. The Black Bird Coven is an interesting villain - one that has an undefined level of power that I'm looking forward to being explored in other books.
I do wish the relationship between Brooke and Drake had slowed down at times. I'm a sucker for a slow-burn and this one took a giant leap about halfway through the book and then never slowed down. Other than that, the relationship is complex and well-written, with both of them being scared to make the necessary sacrifices in order to have a deeper connection.
I felt some moments were a little cheesy - nothing extreme, just some cheesy dialogue and events that went a little too smoothly or were predictable.
Other than those very small critiques, I really enjoyed the book and thought it had some really unique aspects. The author did a great job of creating a world that I look forward to exploring in a second book.
Thank you to the author for my advanced reader copy of The Apothecary's Dark Fate. I'm writing this review willingly!
I want to thank the author for a copy of an eARC in exchange for an honest review! I didn't realize how much I've been craving a fun urban fantasy romance and this one hit the spot!
Brooklynne is trying to find herself after her heart is shattered by her former professor Lewis, who not only dumped her but also took credit for creating a novel love potion (side note - as a former grad student, this would've set me off). But when her sister his kidnapped by a dangerous coven of witches, she finds herself needing to join forces with a handsome and powerful detective in order to bring her sister back safely. Brooklynne has to navigate her growing feelings for Agent Drake all while trying to race against the clock.
I really enjoyed Brooklynne as an FMC! She definitely embodies everything about being an elder sister - she's very caring, loves her family, and often blames herself for things that are outside of her control. Her banter with Drake was electric and Brooklynne and Drake were a hilarious duo whenever they were on the page together. I enjoyed getting Drake's POV as well, especially during the scenes with Brooklynne's ex... gosh, Lewis infuriated me! The supporting cast was also quite memorable and they didn't seem like an afterthought, which I appreciated. The only note I have is that I wished that Drake and Brooklynne got together a bit later to allow more time to develop the romance as it seemed a bit sudden when it finally happened at the 55% mark.
I thought the pacing was fast and the plot was quite enjoyable! I'm interested to see where Book 2 will go. I recommend this if you're itching for a quick urban fantasy read filled with banter and some mystery!
Read if you enjoy: -Dual POV -Warlock Agent x Mortal Potion Master -Age Gap -Banter -Mystery
A steamy, thrilling, gem of an urban romantasy. A magical city, a mortal with a talent for potion making, a warlock with a deadly secret, and a missing girl that may be the unwitting spark that reveals an underground revolution. This book had all the hallmarks of a romantasy thriller with whimsical touches like self mixing cauldrons and wrinkle reducing tonics for an heiress with a team of body guards. Brooklynne and Drake were a team set toward disaster but ended up working together just right. He reminded me of early Detective Stabler from Law&Order SVU, who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty to solve a case. And Brooklynne was so totally relatable to the college heartbreak, the mixed feelings toward her ex, and the loyalty to her friends and little sister. Book two looks like it’ll promise more of the same heat, danger, and magical twists. I can’t wait to read it!

Magic, danger, and a love that could kill…
I'll give it 3.75 stars.
The world-building of this story was cool! I really liked the magic system, and the tension between the government and the magic community. There's so much potential here, I really hope the author expands more on this aspect of the story in the next books.
Although, it really shows it's the first book of a series, it was a bit rushed but it was still fun to read.
It has a few spicy scenes between the main characters. I'd rate it 3 out of 5🌶️ of spiciness.
Overall, if you're looking for a light read and a series starter, this book is for you!
Let me tell you, I thought I knew where this book was going, and, spoiler alert, I didn't. You won't either. I loved it so much. Brooklynne is an undercover baddie! Who knew she was capable of so much!
Seriously, this author did a great job creating her world, without making the book too wordy if you get my drift. The details are there, but it's not over done. It flows beautifully, and based off my read, I don't see any left over plot holes. It's beautifully tied up. I highly recommend this read!!
A story that is as exciting as it is magical. Throw in some spicy romance and the story creates a love potion. A wicked witches’ coven is at work with their collective power, kidnapping the girlfriend of the governor’s son. Her sister and agency detective race against time to stop them. Potions, spice and excitement galore. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book grabbed me and kept me reading from beginning to end. Their was no putting this book down until the last page was read, and then I needed more. It moves along at a great pace, has interesting characters that you will love and a story that will not disappoint. This book needs to be read, there is no doubt about it.
The Apothecary’s Dark Fate by Sarah Fischer is an amazing urban fantasy. The story is entertaining, enjoyable, interesting, slow burn romance, mysterious, exciting, and more. The Apothecary’s Dark Fate is the first book in Secrets of the Black Bird Coven series.

Wow! What a book. Love Drake and Brooklynne together. You can tell he’s a magic man used to getting his way, but she knows how to knock him down a peg. Lots of banter and heat. Will reread! Is the next book them or a new couple??
From the first page, I was hooked. It is not easy to blend mystery with fantasy but Sarah nailed it. I was immediately rooting for Drake and Brooklynne to get together. Will he help save her sister? Will she finally break down and date Drake? Read it and find out. I cannot wait for part two!!
I really enjoyed this book. I got into romantasy from Fourth Wing and have been reading a bunch since. This book was fun, had entertaining characters you want to root for, and ended in a way that has me waiting for book 2.
Let's say that some more editing would made this novel a full 5* There's plenty of potential, a great mix of urban fantasy/romance/mystery, a lot of fun. I can't wait to read the next novel in this series Recommended. Many thanks for this digital copy, all opinions are mine.
This book was not at all was I was expecting! The author did a fantastic job of drawing you in and keeping you captivated! I DEVOURED this book! I can’t wait for the next one to come out!.
Mystery, magic, and romance are the ingredients that make this tale a winner. It's a magical potion that will keep you reading and make your toes curl! I can't wait to read the sequel.
