The Ninth Realm

Rate this book
The Ninth Realm is a romantasy full of delicious intrigue, gripping adventure, and slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance based on Norse mythology.

For ten thousand years, a Keeper has guarded Earth from ancient gods, greedy dwarves, and beautifully wicked fae. Saga knows nothing of this until an urgent email from her dying father summons her home to Iceland.

Fulfilling his final wish, Saga inherits his role as Keeper and heir to the family’s horse farm. But when Kalen, a devastatingly handsome stranger, arrives to fulfill a mysterious life debt, her world unravels into secrets and deadly magic.

Dark creatures come for her, revealing her father’s greatest deception that Saga is bound to Kalen through the sacred Life Bond. Worse, the Norse gods have resurrected the Tournament of Realms, a brutal contest among champions of the nine Norse realms to determine who is worthy to guard them.

To survive, Saga must master her skills while navigating the intrigue of the gods. Yet her greatest challenge may be resisting the dangerous fae prince who could either save her heart or shatter the world she’s fighting for.

A must-read for readers who love star-crossed lovers, plot twists, fated mates, and tournament vibes. Perfect for fans of Demi Winters and Danielle Jensen.

Perfect for fans of The Games Gods play, The Ninth Realm is a fun, fast paced ride! I have a soft spot for this subgenre and the snarky writing style.

I’ve been in quite a reading slump the past few months where I just didn’t feel like picking up a book (even if I was technically liking it), but I found myself excited to keep reading this one and it was difficult to put down.

I really enjoyed how Saga is just dropped into the middle of everything and has to find her way through. I also connected with the smallish amount we get of who Kalen is throughout the book.

My only issue is that some of the dialogue between Kalen and Saga was a bit overly cheesy towards the end. I think that there should’ve been a tad more lead up to some of their exchanges.

I did see almost all of the twists coming, but that didn’t change my enjoyment AT ALL. I loved the direction the story went and it strangely felt like a comfort read.

Overall, I had a blast and can’t wait to continue with the sequel!

Thank you to Julia Silverwood for the opportunity to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review :)

Ahh this was such an exciting read. It’s basically Norse mythology but make it the Hunger Games. The trials were done so well. The worldbuilding was incredibly immersive. I felt like I was right there alongside them the entire time.

Saga was such a strong FMC. She’s resilient and brave even while constantly being left in the dark. The banter between her and Kalen was so good. I did figure out his role pretty early on, but honestly his reservations made complete sense to me. I loved the bond that developed between them, and I was giggling when they finally gave into it. The found family was also done really well. Liv, Brandr, and Ivan were literal ride or die for Saga.

That last trial had my jaw on the floor. I was fully flipping through pages (figuratively because I was on my kindle) just to see what would happen next. And that cliffhanger??? I need the next book immediately. Please don’t break my heart Julia!!!

One of the most fast paced books I have ever read! Holy moly was this FILLED with action, not a moment where it let up, so it was seriously difficult to put down. A Norse mythology fantasy romance set in the current real world where Saga, a human from Midgard, is forced to compete against her own family and the chosen from all nine realms to determine who will be the next Keepers (guardians of the gates) of each realm. It’s a fight to the death, hosted and manipulated by the gods for their own agendas, whims, and entertainment. The bonds and alliances she has to make along the way are a gamble she must take, because nobody can get through this contest alone. Lifelong friends and mortal enemies are made, bonds are forged, twisted conspiracies are unearthed, and still we do not fully realize the repercussions of her final decision! I’m panting and chomping at the bit for book 2!!!

If you’re in the mood to read Norse based fantasy, mythical creatures and beings, slow burn with tension and yearning amok, bloody battles within deadly trials, found family, feminine rage, bonded mates, morally grey characters (not just the MMC) and forced proximity, this is the one for you! It’s a quick read, and I mean SO EXCITING, because there’s no good spot to stop reading!!

Huge thank you to Julia Silverwood for having me on her ARC Team and for the opportunity to read and help promote this excellent book!! I can’t wait for more!!

Holy shit?! The ENDING?!? The Ninth Realm follows Saga, a normal college student who returns home—to Iceland—after receiving word from her father to return home quickly. Saga leaves behind her life in Florida to return to her father’s horse farm just to discover things aren’t what she was expecting. Because what you mean everything in Norse Mythology is real and it’s her very life?!? Saga’s father makes her Earths (Midgard) next Keeper, something she was not prepared for whatsoever. With her new knowledge of myth stories being true, Saga is thrown into deadly trials created by the gods to fight against her own blood to staying Midgard’s Keeper.

I haven’t read many Norse Mythology books, so when I found this one coming across my FYP on instagram as an arc I knew I needed it. I’ve always been obsessed with everything mythology and I fear that we do not have enough Norse Mythology books out there and i’m so so blessed the author took a chance on me to arc this for her. I am fully invested in this series need book two asap. I adored Saga and all her friends and Kalen—who she gets a life bond with ;). This story is so enriched and true to details of norse myth and have the high stakes of the deathly trials that I was gripping my kobo by its edges as I turned the pages finish each chapter. I’m in love with this book and recommend everyone to give this a read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via the author)

I finished this in one sitting. I thought the chemistry between Kalen and Saga good. I loved how spicy Stormchaser is and the sass of Jökull. Appreciated the bestie version of touch her and die. I thought the modern blended in the Norse gods. (Meddling gods, I might add.) The ending was busy af and I am looking forward to the next one.

But I do know, when we are together, we create magic. Saga, you bring sweet air into my lungs and cast stars into my endless night. Your touch awakens something inside of me I didn’t know had been dormant and forgotten. To Hel with what fate has in store for us. I’m going to fight with every fiber in my body to ensure our destiny lies together, not to save my life, but to save yours.

First of all, for this being my very first ARC, I could not be more pleased. I LOVED this book and can't wait for the rest of the series. Obviously, I am completely obsessed with another fictional male. I love Kalen with every fiber of my being and the fact that he isn't real will be giving me a stomach ache for the foreseeable future.

I think the only thing that threw me off was Saga being from Florida?? Like what do you mean she has all of these talents when it comes to fighting? I suppose it is simply one of those facts that all of us fantasy readers simply accept. Of course the FMC will be 4.3 pounds with little to no experience fighting. I'm not mad because in the long run, that is a small complaint for everything else being INCREDIBLE.

Julia, I am begging on my hands and knees for you to release book two okay? okay perfect thank you.

Norse mythology but throw in The Games Gods Play and The Hunger Games. This is a fast paced adventure that will play at all the emotions. You don’t like him, but you do and then there are the gods and you won’t quite know how to feel about them. A lot is thrown at you in the beginning but it does pick up! I do love how this found family/group of individuals come together. The entire time you honestly will question it but you’ll also find yourself cheering for them. I like how relatable the FMC is. She isn’t the typical stubborn/hotheaded FMC that we find in so many books. Yes she’s angry and rightfully so but also she isn’t quick to just embrace everything that happens. I still am unsure about Kalen. I still feel like there is some other giant secret awaiting us in book 2.

I received this book as an advanced reader copy and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I read this as an ARC and I will absolutely be buying this book to have a physical copy.

What an incredible story - so full of lore and fast paced adventure! I loved the Viking setting and how grand the scope of the universe felt. I loved the side characters and their development as allies and friends.

And the MMC! Kalen fell HARD and it was delectable to read their forbidden romance unfold. I definitely feel like we have only scratched the surface with him and I can’t wait to get more of him in book 2.

Finally, our MFC. What a badass. I could perfectly picture this tiny blonde woman with more gumption than her tiny frame could possibly contain.

I will be impatiently waiting for book 2, The Bonded Warrior!

ARC Review: Overall enjoyed the book and it kept me interested. I would have like to see more between the main characters and liked him more before he professed his love to her. I feel like I would have been more invested in them as a couple. The ending though... not where I thought it was going so I was surprised.

The world and magic system in this book was very unique. It is a mixture of real world and a fantasy world. When Saga's father dies she is thrust into a new world of Gods and creatures from other realms, not realizing that all the stories her father told her and the nightmares she always had were a reality and not fiction. In order to keep her alive, her father binds her life to a mysterious fae and she is forced to feel the bond between them. Her father passes down his Keeper role to her and members of her family are angry with this decision. Therefore, she is forced to compete in a deadly set of trials to win her role of Keeper and is up against all her family members of eligible age. Her mother took her away from Iceland so she did not receive the same training as her other cousins and so she knows that she is at a disadvantage. Along with that, if she dies so does her fae protector, which is a lot of responsibility to carry.

This book very interesting and I liked all the different realms and the politics with all the Norse Gods. I felt that Saga was always underestimated but she was scrappy and found a way to survive each time. Her bond with Kalen was an amazing little addition to all the stress she was enduring during the trials. These unwanted feelings and desires had become to overtake the rational side of her mind and I very much enjoyed their reluctant allies to lovers. I was so nervous with where this whole story was going and I am still extremely intrigued after the ending of the first book. At times I felt like we were dumped into the world building and almost learning it with Saga as she was unaware. But where I felt was lacking the most was the explanation of various classes/breeds of each realms citizens. In the fae world there were many different fae specie and I am sure it was that way in the other realms, which was not explained very well. I feel like it would have been less confusing in the fighting portions of the trial if there was more explanation. Saga's story definitely gave the chosen on vibes but she continued to stay a weak human with no magic. So with the ending of the first book and what happened I am super interested to see where Saga goes and where Kalen is. I would love a dual POV because with everything going on with Saga I feel like we are missing half the story without his POV. There were definitely times where the story dragged a bit and I think swapping POVs could have helped with that, because Kalen was always up to something. Despite all the criticism, I was sucked into the book and had a lot of fun reading it. It was entertaining and gripping. I will FOR SURE be reading book 2!!

Thank you Julia Johnson for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m starting to feel that the romantasy genre is becoming overly saturated with deadly trials and quests to find bonded animal companions. Or maybe those are just the books that seem to capture my attention. Julia Silverwood’s The Ninth Realm is no different, on the surface.

The Ninth Realm features deadly trials, bonded animal companions, enemies-to-lovers romance, forbidden romance, forced proximity, and bonded mates. But fae, dwarves, and other mythical beings are also prominent. More importantly, the gods of Norse mythology play heavily into the story and the Norse Realms Saga series overall.

Saga Ragnar left Iceland and her father behind when she was nine years old. Now twenty, she and her mother have built a happy life in Florida. Her mother has a horse ranch, and Saga is a college student. Throughout the years, Saga has stayed in contact with her father through the occasional email. When she receives an urgent message asking her to return immediately to his farm, she goes without question. She arrives only to find him on his deathbed. In his final moments, he makes her promise to take over the farm. He also establishes a life bond between her and a stranger named Kalen for her protection. Saga has no idea that she just promised to take her father's place as Keeper of the Ninth Realm, also known as Midgard or Earth, and that her life is tied to Kalen’s. Soon, she finds herself in a tournament, facing multiple trials to secure her position as the rightful heir to the Keeper title. Saga also fights her attraction to Kalen while trying to keep them both alive and learn about the world she has been thrust into.

The Ninth Realm was an enjoyable read. I love that there were surprises and the book wasn’t what I was expecting. Saga dives headfirst into the challenges that come her way and doesn’t back down. The political intrigue and scheming gods add to the surprises. Saga and Kalen, who is mysterious and definitely knows more than he’s revealing, were both likable characters. Their forbidden romance is slow-building and passionate. The Ninth Realm is Julia Silverwood’s first foray into romantic fantasy, and she delivered on the friendships and the emotional rollercoaster you expect with this genre.

I’m probably one of the few readers who did not like the way The Ninth Realm ended. However, I’m sure that in the upcoming books, I will appreciate the ending and what it actually means to the overall series. This is my first time reading Julia’s writing, but I have faith that since she put together a good story, she will continue to do so. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book and finding out how Saga’s saga continues.

4.5/5 ⭐️

WOW! Just wow! I was totally blown away by this Romantasy debut by Julia Silverwood. I had no expectations when diving into this book. I just knew immediately, from the blurb, that this was a book I absolutely NEEDED to read! I was NOT disappointed one iota! This fast paced story pulled me right from the start and I never wanted to leave!! I am an avid reader of Fae Romantasy books and to have one that encompasses that plus Norse mythology….gimme please!

The writing was superb with such a lush and dangerous world. The imagery Silverwood delivers in this incredible world is exactly how I would picture any world with Norse mythology to be. It was all so vivid, I could clearly see it as if I had been standing there. The lethal tournaments were teeming with action and danger that lurked around every corner. The author did a fantastic job keeping you guessing at was coming next.

The characters are crafted superbly with strength, flaws and determination. Saga is such a strong resilient character. Even really having no clue as to why she has been placed in this position. She truly becomes such a kickass heroine. Kalen is mysterious dark and broody. A bond forces them together but closer they work together, the more the delicious angst and slow burn tension builds between them. The cast of side characters were as equally integral to this story. The found family Saga finds herself embroiled with is immensely satisfying. And then we have the cast of meddling gods who have crafted this tournament with its deadly intentions. It’s just all so magnificent.
The twists and turns will leave you reeling and aching for more. I will now be waiting patiently (or impatiently) for the next installment!

Thank you to Julia Silverwood for entrusting me with an early eARC of this book!

The Ninth Realm
By Julia Silverwood

I loved this book so much!

Right from the get go, it was fast paced with lots of action. At her father’s request Saga travels home and soon discovers things aren’t what they seem. Her father was the keeper of Midgard (Earth) and now Saga must take his place. But to do so, Saga will have to survive the Tournament of the Realms. A set of deadly trials determined by the gods themselves. Saga will be competing not only against some of her own family members but also against the prospective keepers of the other realms too. And most of them would gladly take Saga out. To make matters even more complicated, Saga learns she is life-bonded to Kalen, a fae, and if either of them dies then so does the other one.

This book literally had me on the edge of my seat reading as fast as I could to see what would happen next! I really liked the combination of the real world and the realm of the gods. I loved Saga’s found family and the bonds that developed throughout the trials. I was so intrigued by the Vordr Guardians, and I hope we find out even more about them as the series progresses. Even if you don’t know much about Norse mythology (except what’s in movies), Julia Silverwood integrates it into the story flawlessly. As Saga learns more, so do you. It never felt like it was hard to understand and was done in a way that it only added to the story. The trials were insane and had me holding my breath to see how Saga would survive! And the ending! It was so unexpected but so good at the same time.

One of my absolutely favorite things in the book was the absolutely delicious slow burn romance and the yearning between Saga and Kalen. I could not get enough!

I think it’s safe to say that this is just the beginning of what I’m sure will be an absolutely EPIC romantasy series. I am officially obsessed and cannot wait for book 2!

Thank you so much to Julia Silverwood for this ARC!

Okay, I had such a good time with The Ninth Realm. This book had me hooked so fast, I didn’t want to put it down. I was fully invested the entire time.

Norse mythology made the storyline entirely different from that of other books I’ve read. It felt so immersive and magical, and the stakes just kept getting bigger and more chaotic in the best way.
And the tension between Saga and Kalen? 😩🔥UNREAL!! The energy and the vibes were EVERYTHING. Kalen is mysterious and dangerous, with that whole “I might ruin your life, but you’re still going to fall for me” vibe, and I ate it UP. Their chemistry had me screaming.

If you love star-crossed angst, tournament-style chaos, high-stakes fantasy drama, and romance with actual tension, you NEED this on your TBR immediately. This was such a fun, addictive read, and I’m already desperate for more 💀✨

ARC Review:
First of all, WOW. This book had me hooked from the beginning. Saga’s father passes away, and she is left as The Keeper, only she doesn’t realize what that actually means. She’s thrown into a tournament of Keepers to decide who is worthy of the spot. As she learns that the stories she grew up with were actually real, she learns everything that was kept from her.

The Ninth Realm is perfect for lovers of The Hunger Games, magical realms, and slow burn romance that keeps you on your toes! This book is fast-paced and you are immediately thrust into Saga’s story from page 1. The writing was well done and easy to read. The story was filled with unique ideas (like the way she addressed translation for members of different realms!) and the world building was so fun! 🔥👑

When Saga’s father dies, she discovers his role as the keeper of Earth and is called upon to compete in a deadly tournament with the other realms to prove her worth and fight for her place as keeper. ⚔️ 🐉

Lookout for magic, fae, political games, character development, fated mates, and twists you won’t see coming. The FMC undergoes such beautiful and smooth character development I didn’t even realize it was happening as I was reading. And the MMC? Let’s just say I underlined A LOT of quotes that came from his lips. Like many romantasy books, the story kept me interested throughout but the last 40 or so pages had me racing to see what comes next and how the story would end. The ending left me hungry for more and I can’t wait for book two to continue Saga’s story (yes I messaged Julia Silverwood to confirm book two is in the works😂).

Thank you Julia Silverwood for the ARC of this book 💙

I'd like to thank BookFunnel and Julia Silverwood for this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review!

If you enjoy unique takes on Norse Mythology, this is a book for you. This debut romantasy was intriguing and unexpectedly funny. I found myself reading non-stop to find out what happens next. This would be an excellent recommendation to anyone new to the genre of Romantasy.

'The Ninth Realm' follows Saga who receives an ominous email from her estranged Father of 11 years to visit him in Iceland. She is then thrown into a realm she knows nothing about, bonded to a man she doesn't know and fights for her life. The writing of this story makes it feel like I've known this character for a long time. The line of "Now isn't the time to explain that the Avengers movies are the extent of our teachings." hooked me right in. I am excited to dive back into this story in the next book!

Thank you Julia for the ARC!

This book delivers a thrilling Hunger Games-style tournament set against a richly imagined world inspired by Norse mythology. The worldbuilding was fantastic and it blended ancient legends with contemporary life seamlessly, creating an atmosphere that felt both immersive and completely unique.

The story is packed with brutal challenges, and political intrigue, but the slow-burn romance really stole the show for me. From beginning to end, the pacing kept me hooked, and I couldn’t wait to see how everything would unfold. Can’t wait for book 2!

ARC review:

This is a story with trials, Norse mythology, and magical beings from different realms, and animal guardians. The premise sounds good, but unfortunately, this book falls flat for me.

Saga is an Icelander that moved to Florida. She goes back to Iceland at the wish of her father, who then mysteriously dies. With his final breath, asked for a life bond between saga and this mysterious brooding man. Saga then learned that magic is real and just kind of goes with it, unfazed. Saga then has to compete in trials to become the keeper of the Earth realm and take her father’s place.

This book does a lot of telling instead of showing. We are told so much information and just have to accept it. The writing is stilted, and the dialogue is unnatural. I don’t believe in the love story. MMC is not a fleshed out character, and neither are most of the side characters. Probably won’t read book 2.

3.75⭐ rounded up to 4 for review.

I think this story has great potential and kept my interest throughout and I'm looking forward to book 2.

The inclusion of the Norse Gods and Icelandic vibes was a really cool concept. I wish we would have gotten more interaction with the actual Gods/Goddess instead of the short quips and interactions. There were moments you thought you were going to see more and it just didn't quite happen. I also would have liked more information on the other realms and their beings. We get a lot of names thrown at us as each realm is represented to fight but I could not keep some of them straight or differentiated due to little story telling to separate them.

The tethered animals were really cool. I wish we would have gotten to see more of the other beasts once keepers were paired up and how they worked together. We do get a little bit of time with Saga's but I think that could have been developed and shown more too.

The trials themselves had great premise but were moved through rather quickly. Even the training and days between were kind of mulled through which made some transitions sticky and slow.

The relationship with FMC and MMC didn't quite fully land for me. I'm not sure I would call this a slow burn. There really wasn't much time spent together or meaningful conversations to make you root one way or another for it to happen until it suddenly shifts to full blown infatuation which made it seem awkward. Especially since after the big declaration, it's right back to not much time together. This easily could be a YA book if that instalove and 2 trying to be sexy scenes shift a little bit as there's virtually no other intimacy going on. There's also so much mention of the 2 for 1 deal and then bonded that it doesn't feel authentic and more forced.

The twist was fun, would have loved to see more of the consequences from the involved parties. Hopefully that comes up in the next book.

Some of the choices in dialogue and word picks didn't flow for me. I had to re-read in several spots to get some things to flow or understand. I'd like to think I'm not old at 41 lol, but some of the real world comparisons were too young and weird that made me roll my eyes, it just didn't feel mature or matching the steaks of what was going on. Saga's ignorance to everything going on and sheer lack of any real training mentally or physically vs the other 2 potentials from her world she had to fight against not to mention the much higher skilled otherworldly candidates seemed very unrealistic that she would be able to keep up as well as she did. And her relationship between her parents was unsettling and left many questions on both ends.

All that to be said. It was a very interesting concept and did move along well. I think it has great potential and I am looking forward to book 2.

I was lucky enough to be chosen by the author to read an ARC of this book and so glad I was selected. I absolutely devoured this book in a day. I’ve never read any romantasy books that included any type of mythology and I enjoyed how well the author connected it throughout the story. Most of the book is focused on the three deadly trials that the FMC must compete in order to become keeper of the Midguard realm (commonly known as earth). Her father was the keeper prior to his death and chose his daughter to carry on his responsibilities. However, the gods chose to have a tournament to choose who the best and strongest of each realm who would be worthy. Current keepers of each of the nine realms were included in the trials along with anyone one else who was summoned to compete. Failure to compete ended in death so everyone was forced even if they didn’t want to become a keeper. The 3 trials themselves were brutal forcing everyone to fight or die. Some of the trials had me on the edge of my seat wondering how Saga would survive. She was considered the weakest of all with her small size, lack of magic and very little training. Although she was considered the underdog, her grit and determination were her biggest strengths to survive. She created alliances and surprised everyone including the gods given her small chances of survival. Her journey through the trials was brutal but her persistence and willpower to become a warrior helped her become successful. The world building was excellent. I felt I was there with them during the trials. The pacing was excellent. She made a visit to her dad who she had not seen in years and was unaware that he was earth’s realm keeper. She had no idea that her father, on his deathbed, would choose her to continue his legacy. There was never a lull in the story and I found myself wanting to know what happened next. There wasn’t much spice but plenty of yearning throughout the book. The plot twist at the end takes the story in a new direction which sets up for book 2.
Overall if you enjoy:
•Norse mythology
•Deceptive gods
•Deadly trials
•Magic
•Badass guardian animals
•Extreme dislike to lovers (wouldn’t call them enemies)
•Yearning
•Fated mates
•Fae, Dwarves, Fairies, Giants and other mythical creatures
Then this book is for you. Looking forward to book 2!

If you’re craving a romantasy that throws you headfirst into deadly competitions, sizzling tension, and Norse mythology with a razor-sharp edge, this book absolutely delivers. Imagine The Hunger Games colliding with ancient Viking legends, then drench it in fae politics, magical bonds, and enemies-to-lovers chemistry so intense it practically crackles off the page.

Saga is the kind of heroine you can’t help rooting for. She starts off completely unaware that her life is tied to the fate of nine realms, but once she’s pulled into the brutal Tournament of Realms, she transforms from grieving daughter to fierce survivor. Watching her struggle to master combat, survive impossible trials, and navigate manipulative gods makes every chapter feel urgent and addictive.

And then there’s Kalen.

Brooding? Absolutely. Dangerous? Without question. Emotionally unavailable but secretly unraveling? Oh yes. The magical bond forcing him to protect Saga, even while resenting her humanity, creates some of the best slow-burn tension. Every interaction between them feels loaded with sharp banter, reluctant trust, and the constant threat that they might either kiss or kill each other. Sometimes both.

The worldbuilding is another standout. The Norse-inspired realms feel vast, mythic, and alive with danger. Gods interfere like cruel puppet masters, fae schemes lurk around every corner, and the companion beast element. The tournament scenes are especially gripping with high stakes, brutal challenges, and shifting alliances.

What really makes this story shine is the balance between action and emotion. Beneath all the magic and bloodshed is a story about identity, sacrifice, and what it means to carry impossible responsibility. The romance burns slowish, but every glance and every moment of vulnerability hits hard because the emotional stakes are just as deadly as the physical ones.

Perfect for fans of romantasy packed with:

* Enemies-to-lovers tension
* Deadly magical tournaments
* Norse mythology and fae intrigue
* Forced proximity and magical bonds
* Fierce heroines and morally gray love interests
* High-stakes action with emotional depth

Dark, thrilling, romantic, and wildly addictive, this is a must-read for fantasy lovers who want danger, passion, and Norse mythology all wrapped into one unforgettable adventure.

Thank you to the author for an eARC for an honest review.

“We're two souls from across the stars who found each other.”

Thank you to the author - for writing this book and for the ARC! The Ninth Realm follows Saga through dangerous trials as she battles to become earth’s next keeper - following in her father’s footsteps. This book really hooked me from the beginning and I read it within a couple days! It was well-written and the little twists and turns here and there really kept me engaged while reading. It felt a little like The Hunger Games meets Percy Jackson which was pretty cool. I also tend to really like fairy-tale or mythology retellings or reimaginings so this book was already pretty much my type. I definitely really enjoyed it!
Saga as a character was pretty interesting in the way that she seems to be normal on the outside but ends up being a total badass on the inside. It was really enjoyable to see a character I could relate to grow as a person and fight with all she had. Personally I really enjoyed the side characters a whole lot like Liv and Brandr (also Ivar and Emil). I also really liked the whole idea of tethering - I hope the next book goes into more detail about it. As a whole, the world created is so beautiful and big and I really hope it’s explored more. I would love to see other realms as well. There is a lot that this book explored and the trials were thrilling but I’m still thirsty for more.
The one thing for me that I tend to dislike in books is the whole enemies to lovers but it feels more like instalove. This book didn’t quite do that but they still went from dislike to love a bit too quickly to my taste, at least on Kalen’s side. It would have been nice to have a bit more development in this area or more detail than just their bond holding them together. More angst and more interaction between them that is more than just hate or love. That’s really the main thing that really stood out to me while reading this and it really feels like it could also be more of a personal preference thing so it wasn’t a huge deal to me.
This book had me at the edge of my seat and I will be here waiting (impatiently) for the next book! Especially with that cliffhanger of an ending, I’m ready to continue the story for sure!

Hunger games meets Norse Mythology.

Saga is thrown into a world she believed to be myth and legend when he father is killed and passes on the role of Keeper to her. To make matters more interesting, her father’s dying act is to call in the Life Bond debt from a mysterious handsome stranger Kalen. Now Saga is being summoned by the Gods to a Tournament of the Realms, which hasn’t been held in thousands of years. She must face enemies, family and foe, to fight for her right to remain Keeper of Migdard. But she must also figure out this Life Bond and the male she is now forever tethered to.

The storyline is fun, and the world building really does remind me of Hunger Games with the tournaments, Gods acting as sponsors but with the fun added twist of Norse mythology. We meet characters such as Thor, Odin and Loki along with others such as fae, fairy, elves, dwarves, Vandir and more, from all 9 realms.

There are interesting side characters, such as her cousins Emil and Gunnar, as well as her chosen allies Liv, Brandr and Ivar. I love the magical creature guardians (Jökull and Stormchaser), the alliances, plotting and of course the forced proximity / slow burn romance. Although, my only complaint is the romance didn’t feel quite natural in its progression. We go from cold and only caring because “if you die I die”, to yes some tension, right into crazy all devoted. I didn’t think the tension moments felt as dramatic as our FMC seemed to think they were but I understand why Kalen acted the way he did. From the moment he switched, I did start to grow to want their bond to survive and now with that cliffhanger I can’t wait to see how they fight for each other in the next book!!!

Thank you to the author for this ARC copy, I would be thrilled to be part of the team for The Bonded Warrior book 2!

Thank you to the author for a copy of this ARC. All opinions are my own.

4.5 ⭐

To start... that ending?! It took not one, but TWO unexpected turns and I did NOT see that coming. The unfortunate part about being an ARC reader is now I have even longer to wait for book two. Because I am already impatiently waiting for it and it hasn't even been written yet.

I really do love mythology of all kinds, including Viking/Norse mythology and I ate this up. On his deathbed, Saga's father announces that she is going to be his successor and Life Bonds her to Kalen to keep her safe. The catch is that if Saga dies, Kalen dies. And a lot of people want Kalen dead, so their bond has to remain a secret.

Saga believes she is taking over his horse farm, but the reality is far larger than that. She is to be Keeper of all of Midgard. AKA - Earth. She receives a summons to participate in the Tournament of Realms. If she goes, she will most likely die. If she fails to appear, she will be killed immediately. So now instead of inheriting role of Keeper, she is now going to have to fight to earn the position that should be hers. Four of her opponents are her own cousins, and at least one of them wants her dead.

Saga has to try to learn everything about this world she thought was only myth and stories while trying to stay alive. Turns out that everything that she thought she knew from growing up was only the tip of the iceberg and nothing is as she thought. This book is layered with secrets from all sides.

This is perfect for fans of mythology, deadly trials, found family, bonded riders, and forbidden love.
