A year after her husband’s fatal crash, Natalie James still lives in the shadow of grief. In the fog-swept town of Grayhaven, every room in their seaside home reminds her of the life she once had.
Until Cole Hart knocks on her door, claiming to have known her husband.
At first, his kindness feels like relief. He remembers things only David would’ve known and understands exactly where she hurts.
But soon, small things stop making sense—the way he moves through her house, the lies tucked inside his words, the things he shouldn’t know.
As his stories begin to fracture, so does the quiet town around her. Even Natalie’s best friend starts to doubt what’s real. Whispers spread. Rumors surface. Everyone demands answers about what happened that night—even if she can’t trust what she remembers.
Hi, I’m Paige Brooks—and I write psychological thrillers that dig deep into memory, fear, and the secrets we bury.
Thrillers have always been my favorite kind of story—the kind that leave you unsettled, second-guessing reality, and flipping pages late into the night. The Cage Within is the first in a growing collection of twisty, emotionally layered suspense stories that I can’t wait to share with readers who love that slow-burn tension and eerie atmosphere.
I’ve been married to my husband for over 30 years, and we have one incredible son and two slightly spoiled dogs. We recently moved from the West Coast to the East Coast—a change that definitely inspired the quiet unease and creeping tension in my writing.
If you enjoy thrillers with sharp turns, emotional depth, and that feeling that something’s just out of reach… then I think we’re going to get along just fine.

Thank you booksprout and author for arc,my review is honest and my own.
This novel is an intricately woven psychological suspense thriller that grips the reader from the first page, immersing them in a landscape of palpable grief and mounting paranoia. At its core is Natalie James, a woman still adrift in sorrow a full year after the sudden, catastrophic fatal crash that claimed the life of her beloved husband, David. Natalie's life remains suspended in the amber of tragedy, her routine a fragile shield against the isolating pain of her loss. The setting—the remote, relentlessly fog-swept seaside town of Grayhaven—acts not merely as a backdrop but as a tangible character, its atmospheric gloom mirroring the confusion and dread that begin to consume Natalie.
The novel’s tension explodes with the unsettling arrival of Cole Hart. He is a mysterious figure, charismatic yet unnerving, who appears in Grayhaven claiming an intimate, unspoken knowledge of David's life—a life Natalie thought she knew completely. Cole's initial presence offers a dangerous, seductive form of comfort. However, this solace quickly turns to sickening dread. Cole's knowledge is too specific, too personal, and yet his narrative is soon peppered with subtle lies and unsettling inconsistencies.
As Natalie desperately probes Cole's fragmented and contradictory story, the mystery expands beyond the confines of her home and spills menacingly into the tight-knit Grayhaven community.
The psychological pressure on Natalie becomes unbearable. Her intense investigation and desperate attempts to piece together the truth lead to a severe escalation of her paranoia. The ultimate betrayal comes when those closest to her begin to retreat. Even her closest, most trusted friend, weary of Natalie's accusations and increasingly erratic behaviour, heartbreakingly begins to doubt her sanity, suggesting that her grief may have finally tipped her into delusion. Natalie finds herself utterly isolated, trapped in a tightening net of suspicion with no one left to trust.
The novel is defined by its relentless, masterful pacing, with each chapter introducing a new twist or a further unsettling revelation, successfully driving the reader's interest to see what happens next.
Beneath the Fog of Grayhaven A Tightly Woven Psychological Thriller Where Trust is the Ultimate Weapon The novel opens on Natalie James, a woman trapped in a year of debilitating grief following her husband David's fatal crash. Set against the atmospheric, fog-swept backdrop of Grayhaven, the seaside home serves as a potent reminder of her isolation. The narrative is expertly catalyzed by the arrival of Cole Hart, a mysterious figure claiming acquaintance with David. Cole's initial kindness is a source of brief solace, but he quickly evolves into an agent of mounting dread. The author masterfully introduces subtle, unsettling inconsistencies: Cole’s intimate familiarity with the house, suspicious lies tucked within his words, and details he shouldn’t possess. This effectively forces Natalie—and the reader—to question the very reliability of trust and memory. As Cole's account fragments, the mystery intensifies and spills into the wider community. The appearance of suspicious notes, forgotten memories, and the pressure of spreading rumors suggest a darker truth: David may have been involved in secrets that now threaten Natalie. Even her closest friend begins to doubt her sanity, heightening the pervasive sense of paranoia. This is a gripping, full-throttle suspense thriller defined by its relentless pacing and palpable atmosphere. While the intricate layering of misdirection occasionally lends itself to high narrative complexity, the story maintains an effortless, compelling flow, successfully driving interest to its core, high-stakes questions: Who is Cole Hart, and what truth is Natalie James desperately trying to remember? This is a highly engaging and recommended read for those who favor deep psychological suspense.
A gripping edge of your seat thriller that has you turning pages through so many twists and turns, you just can't put it down. Natalie is still consumed by grief a year after her husband David's fatal crash. Enter Cole who professed to be a friend of David's. He knew a lot about David and Natalie, which didn't faze her at first. But things go a little to weird and Cole's stories didn't always bode true. Who is Cole and what did he want? His initial comfort grew into something a little more ominous. Even Natalie's best friend thought Natalie was losing it. But was she or is it something else? This is a great thriller that grips you from the beginning and doesn't let go. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Whose memories...? When Natalie starts coming around after her husband David died, there are some very strange things happening, and she is missing memories of what happened and when, even things that are in her handwriting. Then there is Cole, who is a half-brother of David's, who just hangs around, starts staying in the guest house. What is going on??? A lot is going on in this story, and it is not at all what I thought it might be. Thank you, Paige Brooks, for a great story. I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review.
It pulls you in with quiet tension and emotional depth. Natalie’s grief makes every clue feel heavier, every stranger more suspicious. The seaside setting adds eerie isolation, and the twists keep you questioning what’s real especially one moment that completely flips your assumptions. A slow-burn psychological thriller with bite.

Natlie James's husband David died in a car crash. Natlie is living in a fog not remembering much. Cole Hart appears one day and said he knew David as a good friend. Cole said David asked him to keep an eye on her. This novel kept me guessing until the conclusion.
Boy oh boy, this was one wild ride. So many questions. So many twists and turns. I almost felt like Alice must have felt going down the rabbit hole. Absolute perfection. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by booksprout.
