I received this arc and this is my honest opinion.
This is a dark romance/psychological thriller. Please, please, please check the trigger warnings as it's really heavy on several sensitive subjects and it isn't light reading.
I understand that this is the second book but it doesn't feel like you have to read the first one to enjoy the current, though I believe I would have a better understanding in the dynamics of the amin couple's relationship.
The story is about a couple where, after their honeymoon, hubby is arrested for the murder of his ex-wife several years before (I think 10 years). Half of the book are the entries of ex-wife's diary where we read first hand from start to finish the progress of their relationship. It's quite angsty and emotional as ex-wife was a really troubled person due to childhood trauma that was never addressed or treated somehow. Some of the descriptions were really hard to read and my heart ached for her pain. Meanwhile, between the diary enties, we are reading current wife's POV. I think throughout the book there was only 1-2 hubby's POV. Current wife's POV is full of angst as we are reading her coping around through hubby's arrest and the his trial while coming in the surface several lies, betrayal and deception so her faith and love to him starts to wither and has doubts.
The writing has a flow and some twists that it's easy to give in to one more chapter and one more chapter and then bam you're close to the end! But it had some tiny inconsistencies that troubled me. All characters are flawed and in no way perfect. This book will wreck you and will make you ache.

3.25 stars!!

i read this after the author reached out and asked me to read!

okay so i actually ate this book up. finished it in 2 days, and literally could not put this book down. I loved that there was a mix between romance and thriller - and I really loved the dual pov between Amelia (the dead ex-wife) and Rose (the current wife). It was such a fast read - although it does cover some very serious topics so please do check trigger warnings.

the only think i will say is that there wasn't really a twist tbh. i was reading the whole book and waiting for there to be this huge plot twist and there wasn't really one. the plot twists was kinda that there was no plot twist...so i felt like i was just waiting for the ball to drop and it never did.

however, overall i did really enjoy this book, and would definitely recommend if you want a fast thriller mixed in with romance!!!

First-thank you to @sabrina.black.author for the opportunity to read this. This is my honest review.

I finished this book and immediately had to sit there for a second... because why am I feeling bad for people I KNOW I shouldn't be feeling bad for??
That alone should tell you everything.

This story follows a relationship that, on the surface, looks like love-but underneath is built on trauma, control, and manipulation. As everything unfolds (especially through the trial), you're constantly questioning what actually happened and who is telling the truth.
And just when you think you've figured it out? You haven't.

What really worked for me was how REAL the trauma felt.

This book doesn't just show abuse-it makes you understand it. Through the inner thoughts and dialogue, you see exactly how someone can stay, how manipulation can feel like love, and how trauma completely rewires the way someone thinks.
And that part? That's uncomfortable. But it's also what makes this so powerful.

Also... the emotional confusion this book put me through needs to be studied

Because tell me why I was:
• questioning everything
• going back and forth on who to believe
• and somehow feeling sympathy for someone I KNOW is dangerous

That's not easy to pull off.

If I had to point out anything, it's that this book is HEAVY. You are sitting in these characters' trauma for a long time, and it's not always easy.
But also... I liked that. If this had been toned down into something lighter and happier, I probably wouldn't have connected with it the same way.

This book is for readers who:
• like psychological, character-driven stories
• don't need clear "good vs bad" answers
• are okay sitting in uncomfortable, messy emotional spaces
• and want to understand the why behind toxic relationships
If you need clean resolutions or clearly "likable" characters... this might not be for you.
-
Final thoughts?
This book doesn't just tell a story—it makes you question yourself while reading it.
And the fact that I finished it feeling conflicted, emotional, and still thinking about it?

Yeah... that's a 5-star read for me.

And I'm absolutely continuing this series.

This isn’t a light or easy read. The story leans heavily into psychological tension and emotional conflict, with characters who feel raw, flawed, and at times difficult to understand—but that’s what makes them compelling. Sabrina Black doesn’t try to make her characters perfect or even particularly likable; instead, she makes them feel real.

The relationships in this book are messy and often uncomfortable, exploring themes of control, trust, trauma, and obsession. It constantly challenges the reader to question what love should look like, which makes it both gripping and, at times, emotionally draining.

Rather than focusing on fast-paced plot twists, the story builds through internal conflict and slowly unraveling truths. It’s more about the characters’ emotional journeys than external action.

Overall, this is a powerful but heavy read that won’t be for everyone. However, if you enjoy dark, character-driven stories with morally grey relationships, it’s incredibly absorbing.

Check your trigger warning going into this as they start from the very first page⚠️⚠️⚠️

It’s thrilling, it’s twisted, and Amelia’s shadow haunts every chapter. I was trying to piece it together the whole time and still wasn’t fully ready for where it went. This is not an easy read and I want you to go in prepared. Lots of hard topics.

I read this as a request from the author kind of like an ARC but it had already been published.
***2.5***

I felt the first part was a little slow getting into it but towards about 70% it picked up and had my attention through out and I just wanted to get to the end. I was kind of confused as to why Rose read everything and went to the trial but then she just settled.. I felt like the ending was a little lackluster.

Slight spoiler in this review towards the end!
This book was out of my comfort zone in terms of genre it isn’t one I really read however when Sabrina reached out to me and offered me a copy to read I was excited at the opportunity to support her.
you should definitely check trigger warning as this book contains heavy and graphic material and descriptions.

the book had me thinking all sorts from the very first page till the very last and it has kept me up till 3am reading as it’s the kind of book you don’t want to put down because it will have you trying to guess what happened, some characters will have you wondering if what they are saying is true or not and how other characters thought of Amelia and Rob the main characters.
Reading the different povs and knowing certain things that other characters didn’t about situations and things that happened and just wanting to be like if only you guys knew the truth
There were lots of shocking and unexpected things that had me wanting to put the book down for a second before continuing because I would be like 😡😔😲.

I loved that none of the chapters were too long it was nice to be able to wrap up my reading session at the end of a chapter as I’m the type of person who likes to see how many pages are in a chapter if I wanna read just one more before bed🤣

For the actual plot You get told from pretty much the first chapter what happened to the main character and then the rest of the book is what made her to do it and trying to figure out who was involved and what lead up to that point😔😔😔

Spoiler:
Im disappointed in Rose for still being with Rob after reading Amelia’s diary and then burning it, and while rob didn’t pull the trigger he was certainly part of the reason why she felt she had no other choice.
Absolutely hated Sam and Rob and all their lies and I hated Theo too for how he disrespected Liza over and over again and Harry of course who started it all and “killed” two people.
My rating isn’t because the story was happy or a beautiful story because it was sad and characters went through horrible things, but I’m rating it 4 stars because it was well written and the book made me feel so many different emotions and this book will definitely be one I’ll be thinking about for a while

thank you Sabrina for the copy and letting me read and review your work <3

Beautifully Written and Utterly Devastating

Review: A Beautiful Lie by Sabrina Black – 5 stars

Book two in the Free Me series hit me harder than I expected. From the first chapter, the emotional weight of this story settles in and just doesn’t let up. It’s the kind of book where you keep telling yourself “just one more chapter”… and suddenly it’s 2am and you’re still thinking about these characters.

What stood out most to me was how deeply personal the character journeys feel. Amelia’s diary entries are heartbreaking in the quietest, most intimate way — you’re not just reading her thoughts, you’re feeling her slowly unravel as she tries to make sense of her world. Even though her voice comes from the past, it has such a strong presence that she stays with you throughout the entire book.

Then there’s Rose. Her chapters carry this constant tension — the sense that something isn’t quite right, even if she’s trying to convince herself otherwise. Watching her story unfold, especially knowing what we learn from Amelia, creates this sinking feeling in your stomach that’s hard to shake. It’s clever, it’s painful, and it’s incredibly effective.

I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever disliked a character as intensely as I did in this book. Sabrina Black knows exactly how to write someone who gets under your skin in all the wrong ways. It takes real skill to make a character feel that real and that infuriating.

The emotional push and pull in this story is exhausting in the best possible way. It’s one of those books that leaves you needing a moment after you finish — just to breathe, just to process.

Five stars feels almost too small for how much this one got to me. I’m counting down the days till May and book three.

I would like to preface that Sabrina Black had reached out to me to read and review her book. This is my full and honest review.

Please, I beg of you, to read the triggers in this book before reading. This is not an easy or lighthearted “dark romance.” There are no spoilers in this review. (4.5 stars)

I was left in utter shock after finishing this book. There were so many elements to it that made this an amazing read for me. I was hesitant to accept reading and reviewing this book, especially after the first 10 pages. I felt it may be a bit too graphic for me (and that's coming from a reader so has NEVER backed down from a F*CKED up book).

Though I see that this book is characterized as a dark romance thriller, I'm not sure if that's appropriate. Truly don't know the best genre to SHOVE this book into because it is more than just a drama, romance or thriller.

Where books can be generally black and white with very clear villains or antagonists, this book was so GRAY. You experience every emotion page after page. Sabrina, chapter 49 really hurt deep.

The story is trauma after trauma but the attempt to move past it. It's very human, this book, there are so many human errors, miscommunication and feelings each character represents. Things that can affect your life that alters you all together. THIS BOOK IS NOT AN ESCAPE FROM REALITY BTW. I truly wanted to like Rob and believe he could never do Amelia wrong. 🙁

All in all, I am impressed and sick after reading this. Thank you Sabrina Black for reaching out to me, I think this book will leave a permanent mark on me.

Review of advance copy received from Author
February 6, 2026
I received this book as ARC free of charge and am leaving this review voluntarily.

****TRIGGER WARNINGS****
This book shows SA, extreme BDSM, drug abuse, animal abuse/death. It is not an easy read.

I will preface this review by saying this genre is generally not my cup of tea, but I went into the reading with an open mind.

I am glad I read this even though it was a hard read. It was the story that detailed emotional and physical abuse and smiling depression. The characters are not good people, but they are humans with a lot of flaws and baggage.

Every wants to believe in love, but some people are so desperate for it that they invent fairytale scenarios that aren't real. Acting becomes normal but behind the curtain is pain. Sone people fight, some endure, and others look for a way out.

The author depicted a hard subject very well. My heart broke while I was reading this, and the ending had me questioning everything.

In case you didn't read the content warnings, this is a dark romance psychological thriller. And the first pages will ABSOLUTELY be brutal. There are a lot of things that I can handle, but the beginning definitely caught me up for a minute. If you can handle the beginning, the rest of the book will take you on a rollercoaster ride of questions that you just don't know the answer to until you finish. You may likely question what is just perspective from fact, and what is truth versus lies with each of the characters. It makes for a good psychological thriller, with some very dark actions, in and out of the bedroom.

This took me a minute to get into because half of the chapters are written like the author is writing in a diary, which causes it to be a little chaotic. It’s actually really cool the way the tone changes bc the other chapters aren’t diary entries, they’re written in real time like a book. It’s just different, and took me a minute. Once I got into it though, this book had me hooked. I was completely invested in the story. I absolutely loved the premise of this story and the way she brought it to life. Unfortunately the ending just left a lot to be desired. There is a book coming after this one, So maybe then I’ll get the ending I’m desperate for.

Honestly I am lost for words at this point, wow. What a rollercoaster that was. Impressive work, the dual POV, the mental gymnastics and making you think one way about it, just to make you go back and wonder the opposite. Very well written and very dark also. Not for the faint of heart and mind. Wasn't something I've ever read before but I can't say I wasn't hooked!

I went into A Beautiful Life not entirely sure what to expect, but I ended up really enjoying the experience. This book felt emotional, reflective, and very character-driven, which I always appreciate.
What I liked most was how human the story felt.
The characters had real struggles and complicated emotions, and I found myself connecting with their journeys in a really natural way. There were moments that made me pause and think, which I always consider a win when I’m reading.
The writing was easy to get into and flowed nicely, which made it a quick and engaging read for me. I liked how the story explored growth, relationships, and figuring out what truly matters in life.
Overall, A Beautiful Life was a thoughtful and heartfelt read, and I’d definitely recommend it if you enjoy character-driven stories about growth, relationships, and finding meaning in life.

Dear Diary,

I feel wrecked, wrung out, empty...Not all monsters look the part. Some hide behind kind words, a handsome face, and a fortune. All that glitters is not gold.

A Beautiful Lie took me on a journey. Be forewarned, if you have a trigger relating to abuse, child SA or suicide, this might not be the book for you. It follows Amelia's past diary entries and Rose's current POV as each woman navigates their relationship with Rob Alexander.

While there were moments I wanted to scream, I felt Sabrina Black did a good job in capturing the thoughts and feelings associated with depression and abuse. The thought processes of the FMCs, as heartbreaking as they were, felt believable. Even Sam's and Rob's, flawed perceptions and justifications for the pain they caused felt real. I am heartbroken for the fictional women in the book and for every person that has experienced a Harry, Sam, or Rob.

A Beautiful Lie is a dark romance/psychological thriller. Following our FMC Rose and her abusive and violent relationship with Rob in this book, you also find out about Amelia, Rob's wife, who tragically died before Rose met Rob. The author delves into her life before and during her relationship with Rob.

This Book is full of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had something figured out, it made me think otherwise.

I would advise you to please check your triggers. As this book isn't for the faint hearted.

A Dark Romance thriller which the author describes as a mix between Gone Girl and Fifty shades of grey.

And although I do see the fifty shades connection (BDSM), it doesn’t do the book justice. This book is raw and full of emotional twists and turns.

I do advice to read the trigger warnings before starting this book as it starts off pretty intense. It has DV, (child and animal) abuse and a lot of psychological issues are being discussed without any filters.

This book has (mainly) a DUO POV. We follow Amelia who has had a traumatic childhood and in her adult life, doesn’t seem to have the best taste in men. She is saved from an abusive relationship by her hot, filthy rich boss (Rob) who she later marries. We read about her past, her present and what she wants for her future. A life that is riddled with demons. But was she happy up until she was murdered?

And we follow Rose. Robs new wife. A copy of Amelia. What will she do when it turns out Amelia’s murderer was actually innocent and Rob has to stand trial for her murder. Does she believe her husband? Or does she see the demons that hunted their marriage?

I was shocked when I started reading this book. It doesn’t start all rainbows and sunshine and you get thrown in the deep immediately. What gripped me was how raw and emotional the story was. I felt so many emotions while reading this book. From happy to anger, from sad to utter surprise. Strangely enough, I also understood why Amelia did what she did. I could make sense of how she felt and what drove her. And I so wanted her to have her happy ever after.

When we first switched from Amelia’s POV to Rose’s, I didn’t really care for Rose at all. I wanted to keep on reading Amelia’s story. But it didn’t take long or I wanted to read her side more. Every chapter captivated me so much that I didn’t want to switch back. And where I normally have a harder time connecting with DUO pov and switching timelines, I didn’t have that at all with this book. Around the halfway point, the book did slow down a bit but not enough to make me lose interest.

The set-up is really well done. I loved that I started doubting everybody at one point. One minute I was sure Rob was an amazing husband, the next I was convinced he murdered Amelia. It was an emotional roller-coaster that made me question my gut-feeling more than once. One thing it did make clear: All the money in the world won’t slay the demons someone has inside!

I would absolutely recommend this book but please DO read the trigger warnings. I gave this book 4,5 stars.

I feel emotionally wrecked after reading this well written book which is a blend of psychological thriller and very dark romance. It is Book 2 of the Free Me series. I hadn't read book 1 and this worked perfectly well as a standalone. Please check the content warnings as this book cover some very heavy subjects such as child abuse, animal cruelty, suicide and incredibly toxic relationships.

It is hard hitting from the very start, and the tension and discomfort was palpable right from the first chapter. The storytelling was brilliant. We are introduced to Rose who is married to Rob, a tech billionaire who has been accused on murdering his first wife, Amelia. The story develops as we see him arrested and put on trial.

The story is told primarily from the POV of Amelia and Rose. I really liked that Amelia's part of the story was told in a dear diary format. We flash back to Amelia's life from 2008, when she first meets Rob, and get to see in inner most thoughts. We see early on how she seems to be forever controlled by abusive and horrible men even going back to her difficult childhood. On the surface, Amelia and Rob's life is glamorous and glitters but underneath that facade is a dark and disturbing picture. Amelia's story is heart breaking and emotionally tense. At times sickening to read, the diary is intimate, raw and vividly goes into the life that she had, not just with Rob but other men including ex-boyfriend Sam.

With Rose, we don't get the deeper dive into her life with Rob. We see glimmers of it, but the focus was on Amelia. Amelia who we constantly see was the love of Rob's life.

It takes great skill to write characters that not likeable, infuriating and get under your skin in the wrong way. I don't think I really liked any of them. The men I detested. Even though I didn't like Amelia or Rose, I felt an emotional connection to them. It was hard not to when you saw what they experienced at the hands of controlling men. It wasn't your average love story, At times I thought they all hated each other. But there was a dark obsession that got under my skin, secrets, betrayal that I couldn't stop reading.

A really great, twisty thriller. The back and forward push and pull was exhilarating. You never knew who was really telling the truth and it was a book where I was constantly playing detective as the story unravelled.

Thank you so much to Sabrina who reached out and offered me to send me this ebook. My opinions are my own.

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗔𝗿𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗔 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗯𝘆

Thank you to Sabrina for the opportunity to read this ARC I am very grateful, this book has already been published by my time of reading and reviewing.

"𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴."

Read the trigger warnings before reading this book!! 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗔, 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵, 𝘀𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗕𝗗𝗦𝗠!!

Rose Parker is now Rose Alexander, blissfully married to tech billionaire Robert Alexander. That is until the police arrive with shocking news: Rob is being arrested for the murder of his first wife, Amelia Thompson Alexander.
Amelia was beautiful, enigmatic, and unforgettable. She's the shadow that has always loomed over Rose's life. Officially, she was killed by her ex-boyfriend, Sam Sinclaire. But as Rob's trial unfolds, the truth proves far darker than anyone imagined.
As secrets unravel, Rose must confront the lies, obsession, and hidden darkness beneath her seemingly perfect marriage.

Sabrina reached out to me to ask if I was interested in reading her book about a dark twisty romantic psychological thriller and as I am a huge fan of thrillers I happily accepted her offer to read a beautiful lie, which is the second book in the free me book series but in no way do you have to read the first book to understand a beautiful lie, but it would give you a better understanding of a couples relationship prior to read the first book.

This is by far the darkest thriller I have ever read in my reading journey so far, it is extremely dark gritty and twisty, it had me hooked, staying up all night just to read one more chapter, I couldn’t put the book down. Amelia’s diary entries were tough to read and at times sickening, they were raw, vivid and very intimate. This is not an easy read at all but I’m very glad I have read it because it’s a book you won’t be able to put down once you start it and will have your mind playing detective trying to figure out what really happened and which characters are telling the truth and who is lying? I enjoyed reading this and I will be reading the first book in this series then definitely the third book which comes out in May! If you love a good redemption story and clues as to who did it, then I recommend this book if you’re okay with the trigger warnings. 4⭐️

A Beautiful Lie by Sabrina Black completely pulled me in and didn’t let go until the very last page. 🖤📖

Book two in the Free Me series carries an emotional weight that settles in almost immediately and lingers long after you finish reading. From the first chapter, there’s a quiet tension running through the story that makes it impossible to stop thinking about these characters.

The dual perspective works beautifully. In the present timeline we follow Rose as she navigates the unraveling reality around her, while Amelia’s story unfolds through diary entries from the past. Those entries are easily some of the most powerful parts of the book. They feel deeply personal and heartbreakingly intimate, as if you’re witnessing someone slowly losing their sense of safety and stability one page at a time. 💔

What makes the story particularly effective is how these timelines interact with each other. As Rose struggles to reconcile her love with the unsettling pieces of truth beginning to surface, the reader already carries the emotional weight of Amelia’s experiences. That contrast creates a constant sense of dread that builds throughout the novel. 😮‍💨

Sabrina Black does an incredible job exploring the psychological complexity of trauma, survival, and relationships. The story doesn’t glamorize the darker aspects of these dynamics. Instead, it examines them with honesty, showing how love, loyalty, fear, and survival instincts can become deeply entangled.

The characters themselves feel incredibly real. In fact, I don’t think I’ve disliked a character this intensely in quite some time, which is a testament to how convincingly the author writes them. That emotional reaction only made the story more powerful. 👀

Add in the unpredictable twists and the way the tension builds throughout the book, and it becomes almost impossible to put down. Every time I thought I understood what was happening, the story shifted again and forced me to question everything I thought I knew.

This installment left me emotionally drained in the best possible way. It’s gripping, heartbreaking, and deeply thought-provoking.

Five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And now I’m very impatiently waiting for book three. ⏳📚🖤

This review took me a while to write… in a good way. I had to gather my thoughts because all I could say was, “Wow… this is amazing.”

Once again, I read this book in one sitting because I could NOT put it down. The story is written in present time, along with Amelia’s diary entries. I believe this style of writing allowed you to form a personal connection with the characters and truly feel their emotions.

I know everyone says the honeymoon phase doesn’t last long, but surely it would last longer than just the moment you get home from your actual honeymoon… right?

What if everything you know and have formed your opinion on was a lie? But what if it’s not? As the trial goes on and the diary gets read, it’s up to you as the reader to decide what is the truth and what is a lie. Does everything need an answer, or are some things best kept hidden?

Every time you turn the page, there is a secret to uncover or a new twist that makes you question everyone and everything all over again. Can you trust yourself? Who is telling the truth? Who is protecting themselves? What will happen next?

I love the emotions the author is able to capture within this book. She addresses real-life issues exactly as they are. She’s not just writing about abuse; she’s writing in a way that lets you live it and understand it. As the story continues, the author gives readers the answer as to why someone can love someone who abuses them, how trauma can change you, and the manipulation behind it all. You will read the good, the bad, and everyone’s inner thoughts.

This book is heavy, and the emotions you feel will have you questioning yourself, feeling sad, angry, and possibly triggered. However, it was written beautifully and captured in such a real way that I truly enjoyed it.

I can’t wait to read the third book, will the series end there?

If you have any triggers, please check them before reading 🫶🏻

I cannot thank Sabrina Black enough for getting me into this series, it’s truly amazing!

GEEZUS! This is a dark, twisty romantic psychological thriller that is emotionally messy, toxic, and incredibly addictive. I seriously wanted to stop after Chapter 1, and again like 20% in and then again like 35% and so on and so on, and yet, I just couldn't do it. This book is so damn addictive - the way I wanted to look into their pain, to scream at them to open their damn eyes and see what is going on. Seriously, the way this book made me feel surprised me so much - in the best way.

Right from the first page (the whole first chapter I was like WTF?? do i want to keep going with this...uh yes!) - Sabrina pulls you into a spiral of desire, deception, and danger that never really lets up. The story is told across two timelines, but it’s easy to follow and adds to the overall tension as you try to piece together what really happened—and who is actually telling the truth. Not going to lie, I kept flipping - there were times when I thought I knew what was going on and then I was way off base.

On the surface, Rob and Rose seem like a happy, stable couple - newly married, just back from their honeymoon, but it quickly becomes clear that there is much more going on beneath that image when Rob is arrested for the murder of his ex-wife several years prior. Rose felt especially well-written to me—she’s vulnerable in some moments and strong in others, trying to hold onto her marriage while uncovering truths that could ultimately bring it crashing down before it even has a change to get started. That being said, I didn't always like her! Robert is equally compelling in a different way—the man oozes charming and is absolutely magnetic which you know deep down to be manipulative, but he's also got just enough darkness to make you question everything he says.

Amelia stands out the most. We only know her from her diary and man, she doesn’t feel like just another character, she just lingers over the entire story. Her diary entries were some of the hardest parts to read—raw, vivid, absolutely painful in parts and deeply intimate. At times they were genuinely disturbing, but they also gave important insight into her emotional and psychological state as you slowly watch the progression of her unravelling.

This is absolutely not an easy read - so if you like easy characters and tidy and all pretty, you are not going to get that here. This book deals with heavy themes including emotional and physical abuse, trauma bonds, manipulation, and the complicated reasons people stay in unhealthy relationships. I would strongly recommend checking trigger warnings before starting.

I’ll be honest—I don't read a lot of psychological thriller and rarely this dark. There were moments where I wanted to stop reading because the characters were so frustrating and just made me so damn angry. I didn’t always like them (in fact, at times I absolutely wanted to scream at them), but that felt intentional. Sabrina does a very good job of creating characters that feel real, flawed, and sometimes infuriating. Ones that you can't help but have this need to interact with!

Despite that, I found the book very hard to put down. It constantly had me trying to figure things out, questioning motives, and second-guessing what I thought I knew. The emotional push and pull was exhausting!

Overall, while this wasn’t an easy or “enjoyable” read in the traditional sense, I’m glad I read it. It’s the kind of story that stays with you and makes you sit with your thoughts for a while after finishing. I don't read enough of those!

I wonder if I should be thanking you Sabrina for reaching out with your book...LOL

This book doesn’t just pull you in, it psychologically kidnaps you.

From page one, Sabrina Black throws you into a spiral of desire, deception, and danger, and you never fully catch your breath. But what makes this story hit different isn’t just the twists. It’s the emotional brutality behind them.

This isn’t trauma romanticized. It’s trauma examined.

The power of this novel is in its raw honesty. It doesn’t glamorize the damage, it dissects it. It shows you exactly how someone stays. How love tangles itself up with fear. How survival starts dressing itself up as devotion. How identity quietly reshapes itself to keep from breaking. And instead of handing you clean answers, it makes you sit in the gray. It makes you uncomfortable. And that discomfort? It feels devastatingly real.

Rose is painfully human, soft in places, and steel in others. She is fighting to protect her marriage while unraveling a truth that might destroy it.

Robert is charming, magnetic, and just dark enough to make you side-eye every word.

Amelia is not just a character, she’s a presence. A shadow that warps every memory and motive.

The tension is thick and builds in a way that braids passion and peril so tightly you can’t tell if the romance is a lifeline or a leash. Every kiss feels like it could be destiny… or destruction.

This is dark romance with psychological teeth.
This is morally gray obsession wrapped in suspense.
This is “I need therapy after this” energy.

It confronts secrets, memory, manipulation, trauma bonds head on. All the messy, complicated reasons we love people who might not be good for us.

If you love thrillers that make you question every motive, every alibi, every “I love you”… A Beautiful Lie will live in your head rent-free.

I don’t say this often because, but Please check your trigger warnings.

This gripping psychological thriller played emotional mind games with me as it tells the twisted tale of newly married, Rose, and her husband, Rob, who still mourns his first wife, Amelia. I was caught up in the story from the first chapter and told from the POVs of Amelia’s diary, Rose and Rob, you don’t know who to believe or what is actually happening until the end.

The author realistically and deftly explores the dynamics of power that occur when ones childhood contains horrors such as SA and domestic violence and how it can shape their adult relationships. Rob is a successful tech billionaire raised in an abusive household who avoids relationships but indulges his sexual proclivities as a Dom. Amelia is engaged to Sam, who is controlling and becoming increasingly violet, making it hard for Amelia to hide her injuries. She is hired as Rob’s secretary and as time goes by, Rob notices her abuse and steps in to help, but is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing?

The control, expectations for obedience and Rob’s personality inconsistencies makes Rob and Amelia’s relationship one that appears perfect on the outside but is hiding some dark secrets on the inside. As someone who was married to an abusive narcissist, the author captures the feelings of fear and helplessness coupled with the need to please and how hard it can be to realize the relationship is unhealthy—that the ‘love’ is most definitely conditional. I admire the author’s research and ability to write such deep emotional trauma with respect and accuracy as if it’s from personal experience.

With plot twists, emotional pain you can feel and palpable suspense, I was reminded how much I enjoy well done thrillers and excellent writing. I will be thinking about this one for a long time to come. Highly recommend!

Check trigger warnings, this is a very heavy book!

Still in shock.
The vibe is Gone Girl but different twists and more characters, more betrayals. (this is not your average thrillers)
We have 2 POVs, Rose (present, at trials) and Amelia's (past) which is crazy. As we get to know the characters and what happened it gets all twisted up. But it is so hard to put down.

And you also get deep. You spend so much time reading about their suffering and traumas and living through them that you do get attached to them, even when you feel you shouldn't (my heart is betraying me).

Amelia, my girl, it's impossible not to love her, she deserves so much more. My heart was literally breaking with each chapter.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm destined for tragedy. Like it's a prophecy I can't outrun."
But the most interesting part was reading all this unfold from the eyes of Rose, a happy wife, having to decide what to believe.

"But maybe I just needed someone who could love me as selflessly as I love them"
I feel like this book has made me rethink a lot about love. All these characters and views have shaped my thoughts and it is a beautiful thing. Even if some of it were a beautiful lie...(see what i did there? ha!)

This is a psychological thriller and dark romance, but I don't really like the later one in this storyline, because I don't feel like we justified the bad actions enough. With that said, I was flabbergasted, I can't believe what just happened, and I will read the next book (and the prequel!)

Oh, yes it is a series, but you can read only this one without any problem, it just gives better insights of the dynamics.

"-There's always hope, Amelia.
-Where, Rob? I don't see it.
-I have some. Maybe I can give some of it to you."

This just wasn't really the book for me, sadly.

Disclaimer: I read this as a standalone book and I received a copy for review from the author, which may not have been an entirely finalised version!

The story of this one is really intriguing and it had me questioning myself at quite a few points. There are some twists and turns I didn't see coming, but they really brought the story along amazingly.

I like how everything is connected and it starts to unfold more and more as you get deeper in, I would be kind of curious to know what happens in part 1 and 3 of the serie to get the full story.

However, I was a little disappointed at the ending, this may be because there is going to be another instalment after, but it felt a little anticlimactic and unfinished, which I guess it is.

I think this book would be really good for fans of a good twisted dark romance with strong thriller (and dare I say some mystery) elements to it. Featuring a lot of morally grey (maybe just black) characters and a very obsessive relationship, I think there are a lot of potential fans out there.

If you are planing to pick up this book, please do take your time to consider the content warnings and take them serious!! My copy did not contain content warnings at the start, so I was quite shocked at points. But I assume the finalised copy does.

Something I also think might have been due to me not having a finalised copy is that I noticed some small spelling and grammar errors, they took me out of the story a little at some points, but I assume they would have made it into the final version.

Thank you to the author for sending me this copy in exchange for a review! All opinions and feelings are my own and completely honest!

The Ultimate Rollercoaster
If you are looking for a book that will keep you on pins and needles, this is it. A Beautiful Lie is a masterclass in suspense. Every time I thought I finally had the plot figured out, Sabrina Black threw a complete curveball that left me reeling. I was on the edge of my seat from the first page to the very last.
Characters You’ll Love (and Love to Hate)
The character work here is intense:
• Amelia: My heart broke for her. She carries a crushing weight of guilt from an event in her childhood—something no child should have to bear. Watching her navigate the belief that she "deserved" the abuse she endured was devastating.
• Sam: Honestly, all I can say is... ugh! He is a truly loathsome character. It’s one thing to be abusive to your wife, but his cruelty toward animals made him impossible to stomach.
• Rob: He seemed like the absolute perfect man... until he wasn't. The shift in his character was one of the most jarring parts of the story. I found myself constantly questioning his intentions, especially when he "discovered" the abuse.
The Dynamics
The "boss/assistant" dynamic between Amelia and Sam is undeniably hot and adds a layer of high-stakes tension to the narrative. It’s a complicated, messy relationship that keeps you hooked, even as the darker elements of the plot begin to surface.
Final Verdict
This book explores the dark intersection of childhood trauma and adult cycles of abuse with a fast-paced, "can't-put-it-down" energy. It is a haunting look at how we perceive our own worthiness of love.
"A must-read for any psychological thriller fan. Just when you think you're safe, the floor drops out from under you."

I just finished A Beautiful Lie by Sabrina Black and yeah… this one had me stressed the whole time in the best way 😭.

It definitely gives Gone Girl vibes but with its own twist. Like every time I thought I had it figured out, something would happen and I’d be like ??? okay never mind. It keeps you guessing the entire time.

Amelia honestly broke my heart. You can tell she’s been through a lot, and the way she carries guilt from her past is just… heavy. There were moments where I just wanted to shake her and be like “none of this is your fault,” but at the same time you understand why she thinks the way she does.

Sam?? yeah… no. I hated him 😭 like truly just an awful person. The way he treats Amelia is bad enough, but then it somehow gets worse and you’re just sitting there getting more mad every chapter.

And then Rob… I don’t even know how to explain him without spoiling it, but let’s just say I did NOT trust him. He comes off one way at first and then things start to feel off, and you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The whole dynamic between Amelia and Sam is messy but also kinda intense?? like it adds tension to everything, especially with the power imbalance. It’s not a cute romance at all—it’s dark, complicated, and honestly uncomfortable at times.

Some parts did feel a little rushed, especially when big reveals happened, but overall I was still hooked the entire time.
Also definitely check your trigger warnings before reading this one because it deals with some really heavy stuff.

If you like drama, toxic relationships, and books that keep you on edge the whole time, you’ll probably be into this.

A Beautiful Lie by Sabrina Black is not your light, fluffy romance. It is dark. It is intense. And it does not pull its punches.

From the very first chapter, there’s this thick undercurrent of danger that never lets up. The tension coils tighter and tighter with every page, and just when you think you understand what’s happening, the story shifts and drags you deeper into the shadows. This isn’t just romance, it’s obsession, secrets, manipulation, and the kind of love that walks the razor’s edge between salvation and destruction.

The chemistry is scorching, but it’s layered in darkness. The emotional weight of this story is heavy; morally gray characters, complicated motivations, and twists that leave you reeling. It’s the kind of book that makes you feel slightly unsettled… but you cannot look away.

This is a solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read for me. Five stars for the relentless tension, the emotional intensity, and the way it completely consumed my thoughts long after I turned the last page. It was absolutely fantastic. @sabrina.black.author is absolutely brilliant!!

That said, this is a different genre for me. While I can absolutely appreciate how well it was written and how powerful the story was, I’ll likely stay away from this level of dark thriller romance in the future. It’s heavy, and it feels heavy.

Please, please check the trigger warnings before going in. This is a true dark thriller romance and it explores themes that may be difficult for some readers. Go in prepared.

If you love your romance intense, dangerous, and laced with psychological suspense, this one will absolutely consume you.

But don’t say you weren’t warned.
