Alpha Tau #3

Come entrare in una confraternita (Alpha Tau Vol. 3)

Rate this book

This is a fun and light read, just as the previous books in the series. I really like all the characters that we've been following from book 1. Seeing them here again was my favourite part of the story. I love that they always get a lot of page time, and not only the MCs.

Marty is great in this one. I actually like him more in books where he is a side character. Love his dog Squirrel. Trey and Scout are wonderful. I'm still bummed that they didn't get a full-length novel, because they deserve it. I also really liked the new character, Charlie. He is a sweetheart.

The one thing that didn't entirely work for me is the relationship between Casey and Briar. I liked Casey. He is really sweet and kind. Briar, on the other hand, is not. I usually like prickly characters, but I didn't like his hot and cold attitude and the lack of communication. Their relationship felt purely physical with not much development.

This series has been a continuing joy to read.

Focusing on the sweet, intelligent, and driven—sometimes goofy and unconventional—young men of Lassister University’s Alpha Tau fraternity, this third instalment follows executive member and pledge master Casey, as he finds himself (in)conveniently falling for a prickly new transfer student and house pledge, Briar.

Briar is tempting in ways level-headed, prior (female-oriented) playboy Casey hasn’t faced in someone of the opposite sex before, but he’s more than eager to embrace his previously unexplored bisexuality once Briar shows a reciprocated interest.

Their chemistry is fire and they have no trouble navigating this new physical connection they share, but Briar is the definition of hot and cold, clearly concealing aspects of his troubled past and acting defensive and grouchy whenever Casey (or their fellow friends and frat brothers) ask too many probing questions, making it difficult for their relationship to solidify.

I spent a lot of time with my hackles up whenever Briar started acting elusive or downright irritable, and I’ll admit it took me the majority of the story to warm to his character. I typically try and avoid most stories that involve lying/secrets/miscommunication heavily within their plots, but I appreciated how this one played out, slow and steady as Briar’s secrets were revealed and his backstory became clearer, ALWAYS with the care, openness and support of Casey and their awesome frat bros.

As a romance, this was about on par with the previous stories within the series for me, enjoying the opposites attract, sexual exploration aspect of their connection and finding Casey and Briar’s chemistry to be extra saucy (maybe because of the femme elements and how they factored into their attraction—seriously, that basement scene?! WOOF!).

Mostly, I just find myself falling more and more in love with the growing cast of Alpha Tau characters (and their non-member boyfriends). They are a very memorable ensemble, all distinct and likeable people, showing exceptional bonds of friendship and brotherhood, and all-around top-bloke behaviour, demonstrated in how they unwaveringly go to bat for one another during tough times. In this way, I find myself happy and eager reading book after book, just to spend more time with these characters, regardless of who is the focus at any given time.

Despite my niggles towards Briar’s initial prickliness, I think I liked this instalment the best so far because of the way the themes and backstories were handled. I still had fun, laughing a lot, and enjoying the group interactions and dynamics at play, but I especially appreciated the extra emotional oomph of this sequel and how it made me feel.

As always, I look forward to the stories yet to come, as I’m now well and truly hooked on the lives and loves of the Alpha Tau men.

“Briar and I felt like we were in orbit, both of us circling around some central point, and sometimes he was almost close enough that I could feel his gravitational pull.

And other times he was light-years away, on some outer curve of an ellipsis I could never reach.”

Nothing makes me want to be a frat boy more than when I hang out with the lovable oafs of Alpha Tau. Nothing serves better as a lighthearted palette cleanser than checking out what affairs of the heart will be troubling these straighter than straight *lol* lawyers-in-training. 🥰 And in The Amazing Alpha Tau Pledge Project, we have social chair and pledge master, Casey Hill trying to do the right thing as his duties expect of him, and not act upon his sudden attraction for one of their recent potential freshmen pledge candidates, prettier than most Briar Pendelton- 'just... whatever the whole package was, he had it, you know?' Even if he's ridiculously hot in a skirt. Even if he's being totally evasive and secretive about himself and his past. Even when he's the one who makes it impossible for Casey to listen to the voice of reason and simply give into that sinful temptation - even when it comes back to bite him in the ass - figuratively, of course. 😏

And where the fuck did that come from? Holy shit. I could deal with the unexpected jolt of being wrenched up a few points on the Kinsey Scale toward the bigger, gayer numbers, but poetic metaphors about getting lost in Briar’s eyes? That was a step too fucking far.

Casey is a solid good guy who takes his job as pledge master very seriously; he genuinely cares about looking out for them, upholding legacy and ensuring that the new candidates do feel comfortable and welcome in their new home. He seriously cared about Briar's well-being, despite how much of himself he wasn't willing to reveal about himself. But, the want to spend as much time as he could with him in whatever capacity - be it pleasure or a simple snuggle - outweighed the need to learn more about him, despite the constant niggling of uncertainty in the back of his mind that something doesn't quite add up. 'Liking it doesn’t even come close. You’re breathtaking,” I said. “It’s like you’re a fae prince or something, and I’m under your spell.' 🥲 l It doesn't help that someone like Marty, who may not be the smartest of the bunch, could sniff out that something was amiss about Briar. And an extra kudos for willingly sacrificing himself as Marty's roommate and putting up with his exuberant side.

It helps that Casey is drawn to Briar's hot and cold nature. He was a prickly closed-off person, always on the defensive side of protecting his true feelings - but, not without reason. It doesn't help either that we only get his pov at the end, so we pretty much remain as oblivious as Casey is till it eventually blows up in everyone's face. It was rather heartbreaking and painful to learn the reason behind his secrecy, and while not entirely valid for having it drawn out for so long, I somewhat understand why he behaved the way he did. 'I wanted more. It turned out we both did. And I’ll admit, I didn’t make it easy for him. Why would I?' 🥺 But not knowing what his backstory was made it slightly harder to warm up to him, until he finally did have the chance to express himself as honestly and openly as he could - did I start to feel sorry for what made him so reserved and wary of opening up to others.

Like, if he just wanted to hook up every now and then, why not just tell me that? I couldn’t get a read on him, and it sucked, because I hoped that he was as into me as I was into him, but if that was true, then why the hell did he keep running away like a scalded cat?

Yet, I did not find it entirely fair at how he and Casey were only with each other for hooking up rather than actually appreciating each other's company. Most of the glimpses into their less sexual encounters were very much in passing; I mean, there were a few cute moments where we get to see a slight flirtation of lingering looks and adorable jibes, but it wasn't enough for me to believe how rapidly it became something more. I know it makes sense because of how evasive Briar has to be, to not reveal too much about himself, but.. I should be used to by now to the speed in which the respective pairs immediately are attracted to; swift without preamble - without much warning. But, I think in Casey and Briar's case, it moved a little too fast for me to really - not enjoy it, but get behind it. 😕

I mean, I don't mind them being together, I just wished it could have been handled a bit differently; a little more low-key, especially since Casey hasn't had much experience with another guy - the ease in which he eased into everything. 😮‍💨 Given the circumstances of past relationships, it is unfair to be so irritated by it three stories in, but I just think this was probably not the best of them, for me, anyways. The epilogue from Briar's POV, as well as the short story do give a bit more closure to the reassuring comfort to how they feel about each other, so there is that, I guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But, if I want to be objective and look at it in a more literal and philosophical light, then Briar and Casey's relationship paved the way for change in Alpha Tau, while also respecting how important it is not to change for anyone. That by being those who love and support you in a place that doesn't judge or expect things of you - to celebrate yourself as however you are and no one should even try to convince you otherwise, is truly where happiness lies. 🙏🏻

I get what this looks like. I get what you think. But I guess I’m confused, because this is the second time I’ve had to ask you if you really want to be here. Shit, it’s pretty clear you don’t respect us, and, okay, maybe we have to earn that— but do you even like us, Briar?

I loved all the Alpha Tau boys - the saving grace of this series; honestly, if you just gave me stories of whatever they have to deal with, rather than changing their relationship status - I would very much be on board. 🥹🥹 Their camaraderie and respect to not only their legacy, but to stand by what they believe in is always such a treat to see. They're so supportive, fun-loving, decent and straight-forward, okay, well, not entirely straight, but they are genuinely good guys who believe in doing the right thing and sticking up for one another. 🩵🩵 A strong family unit that is never judgmental. I know Marty seems more like a fan favorite, but of the seniors, Scout was the one I really grew attached to. It is a shame that he and Trey were only a novella; but, I wouldn't mind seeing any of the couples once they graduate and take on the world. It has so much potential and so much to offer when I think about it. ✨

And I do find myself feeling a bit sorry for the girls of Zeta Tau. Even if there is never any love lost between both their respective fraternities, save for a healthy competitive streak, I feel bad at how all these MCs casually hooked up with in the past suddenly end up with other guys, instead. It must be something in the water on campus. 😊 I am looking forward to the next book featuring two cinnamon rolls from rival fraternities; I am also glad that the authors are alternating the perspectives of who the MC will be. Charlie has won my heart entirely - such an absolutely precious sweetheart that must be protected at all costs, so I look forward to whatever chaotic shenanigans the boys of Alpha Tau will be upto next. 💕💕

The Alpha Tau series has shaped up to be one of my favorites, but Casey and Briar's book fell a bit flat for me. Did I love that there was a femme frat bro? Absolutely. I didn't like the lack of communication and how misleading he was with Casey though, but I get why Briar was the way he was.

I think this may be the steamiest book of the series so far, with things getting hot and heavy pretty early on between the two rather, but outside of the physical chemistry between them, I didn't really feel that connection like I did with Archer/Eli + Marty/Dalton.

Regardless, this was still a great read and I loved all the frat shenanigans, and cannot wait for Charlie's book!

- frat bros
- opposites attract
- hurt x comfort, ish
- communication issues out the ass

Nah bro.

This book went from zero to a hundred in one sentence flat, which was super jarring. The mains had like three conversations and none of them were flirty, then all of a sudden they’re having sex???

Then they just never have a conversation until 80% into the book where unlikeable character number one has all his dirty laundry aired to the entire frat including unlikeable character number two who knew none of it because they never had a conversation. They just had sex and awkwardly tip-toed around each other instead of talking and getting to know each other.

This one was not for me.

“Would I go out with you on a date?” he asked. “Yes. Would I go out with you on a date if you asked me in Walmart? Hell, no! Do better, Casey!” 🙄Charming

I'll try to keep this short. Femme frat boy? Yesh please. Make him a lying non-communicative prickly pear who is very unlikable? No thank you.

Lack of communication was the hidden backbone of the story line, along with a ridiculous assumption, and was used as the reason to partially explain the miserable personality of Briar (I guess) along with bullying at his prior college.

The MC's had ZERO communication and every time Casey asked Briar anything he would shut him down & give him the cold shoulder. And Casey would never push for an answer🤦‍♀️. The relationship was purely sexual. I couldn't tell you if the sex was hot - I skimmed it, didn't care, they had no chemistry.

Highlight of the book: Marty. Always Marty.

4.5 stars. I settled myself into my comfortable couch, my coffee beside me, and started to read. I was so looking forward to starting the next of this more than wonderful series!

Casey is the social chair and pledge master of Alpha Tau. There are newbies and one of them is the somewhat prickly Briar, prickly but oh so pretty. Yep, Casey noticed.

Sadly not all the pledges are friendly open-minded guys, ugh!!

So, Casey has a crush on Briar, he can’t help himself. He can’t take his eyes off him and tries to catch every smile Briar gives him. Awww, cute isn’t he?

To rule the Candy Drive, any Alpha Tau can go in skirts. Wait for Casey’s reaction when he saw Briar… in a link skirt! Yes, his mouth hit the ground. Hot, hot, hot!
Yup, Briar is a constant on Casey’s mind, thank goodness it’s mutual!

Something is going on with Briar, yes, he’s definitely hiding something!

Oh, I loved this read, I loved Briar and Casey’s story, all the guys of Alpha Tau, especially Marty.
There’s a bit more angst in this story, more emotional, but still enough lightheartedness.
A must-read series. Period!

“Do you wanna get dirty, pledge master?”

3.25⭐

The first book in the series not to get a 5 star. Too bad. I really like Casey, I liked him as a character in his own book and I liked him in the last book but something about this story didnt sit right with me, and it had nothing to do with him. It has all to do with the prickly lying Briar, our new pledge and love interest. And I get all the reasons why Briar does what he does, no spoilers, but you cant make me like him for that. I feel like he was way too hot and cold, and kind of an asswipe to Casey. Casey deserves a nicer dude, for real because he is a sweet dude, all the Alpha Tau dudes are good guys but Briar just rubbed me the wrong way. And even after everything is confronted at the END of the book, and we get his POV in the epilogue, I cant bring myself to enjoy his character. Im all for him and his femboy diva self, but him just being a dick and lying to Casey throughout the story just doesnt serve for a very romantic or realistic or healthy relationship Im sorry. Like I said Casey deserves better bro. All the other bros of Alpha Tau were here and I love them, though I was sad to see Marshall was gone, even though he wasnt a main character, I enjoyed him. My man Marty was there, and I love him to death. Also this book wasnt as sexy or funny as the others which is kinda sad. I hope I enjoy Charlie's book because he was a cutie in this too. So we will see. Disappointed that Casey didnt get a better romance.

Ehhhhhh

I really love the writing combo of Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey, but this was my least favorite book so far in the series. Briar was prickly and hard for me to get behind. I know he is supposed to be prickly, but at some point, you have to root for him, as a reader, and that point came too late for me.

I think Casey was fine but a bit boring. I didn't understand his instant infatuation with Briar. He put up with WAY more crap than I would have, and I wasn't really rooting for them, as a couple. The chemistry just wasn't there, and the miscommunications were all that we saw.

The frat boy shenanigans and the side characters carried this story, but I'm hoping the next is better.

I didn't care much for this book. Cassie was such a great friend for Marty in the previous book that I was excited to read his story, but I was a bit disappointed about how his relationship with Briar developed.

I get he has trust issues and a lot of insecurity, etc, but everyone at Alpha Tau, especially Cassie, went above and beyond to help him and make him feel comfortable and yet he always just acted mean and prickly all the time. It was hard for me to be shipping them when I spent all the book thinking Cassie deserved better.

Still loving this series a lot, I just found it a little harder to get to grips with the characters here, but I adore the frat house so much.

First of all, though, wow, the heat between them was something else! It was pretty spicy overall, and I loved the femme boy thing going on with Briar.

Second, Marty is just adorable. He stole every scene he was in.

Briar was a cactus, he was so prickly. Getting him to open up and share his secrets was hard for Casey but when he got there, Briar was pretty sweet. They made such a lovely couple.

I was pretty sure I resembled a cartoon character who’d taken a frying pan to the face whenever I looked at him—twittering birds circling my head and all.

This series is always fun, and I know I'm never going to be royally disappointed. I had a good time with this one, I just felt like I had a little harder of a time grasping the characters chemistry together. I wish we got more lead-up building their chemistry.
It was initially all very tell and no show. They didn't have a ton of on page interaction before they hooked up for the first time and apparently had all this chemistry. I don't mind that it happened so quickly, I just hoped to get more believability of what they had growing between each other prior to that point.

I loved that Casey supported Briar and was ass over teakettle for him right away though, it added a fun element that the books in this series always have. Takes the mask away from what you expect a frat bro to be and makes them into something more.

I also loved that we got glimpses of a lot of the other characters we've previously met too. I will never get enough of them.

“...As the poet once said, ‘Fuck that noise,’” Scout said.
“What poet ever said that?” Knox asked.
Scout shrugged. “Shakespeare, probably. Or he would have if he’d thought of it...”

I have loved every book in this series so far, and this was no exception! Briar is so very prickly (he’s likened to a feral cat, which isn’t far off), but I loved him right away. Casey’s instant acceptance of (and attraction to) him was wonderful. And their first encounter was SMOKING hot.

There was so much delightful humor throughout this, both from the current MCs and previous ones (Marty is always good for a laugh). I zoomed through it and was sad to see it end. It’s definitely going to be a reread for me!

Hmm. I guess I didn't like Briar for most of the book. He kept lying for no reason and when he finally explained why, I guess I don't feel like I bought it.

He got off a bit too easily, both with Casey and the frat. Not to say he didn't have a shit time of it, with the family stuff and the situation at Harvey. I guess I just don't really buy the rationale for lying to Casey. I could get not wanting to put his business on blast with the others.

Casey's great though. I liked this installment a bit less than the others.

Another fun (and rather adorable) story from the Alpha Tau series. This time focusing on Casey Hill, The social chair and pledge master of Alpha Tau, who falls hard with the new pledge, Briar Pendelton.

As with the previous books, the story is written solely from one's perspective, this time Casey. Briar is pricky and secretive, and I guess this works because we (the readers) get to uncover Briar's story alongside Casey.

I loved Casey - he truly cared about Alpha Tau and the new pledges. It was rather cute that he was conflicted about his feelings for Briar (since Casey was the pledge master) - especially since the brothers (especially Marty!) already knew about his feelings and they supported him anyway.

I wasn't sure about Briar though... like I said, he was secretive. Briar put himself behind a defensive wall, and he didn't trust Casey (and the Alpha Tau brothers) easily with his background. So I couldn't warm up to him as quickly as I did Casey. Heck, as quickly as I did CHARLIE (Mercer) who was so precious, and would be in book #4.

There was one moment where I thought the story would be dragging out one of the a$$hole new pledge... and I was so happy that he was dismissed early.

All in all, it was good although I still loved book #1 better.

"It would have been nice if we'd been kissing right now instead of him eyeballing me like he was about to ask me if I wanted to go outside and fight."

A reader friend of mine said to me about this book: "There's prickly, and then there's Briar." And I have to say they were spot friggin on. Briar was really hard to warm up to. I think a big part of it was the fact that we only got Casey's POV, so we never really got an explanation for Briars actions. Knowing what Briar was thinking at the time would have been helpful for me to be more sympathetic to him for how he treated Casey on numerous occasions.

Casey, bless him, was amazing. He was so sweet and patient with Briar. Even when he knew Briar was outright lying to him, Casey was still understanding. He knew something in Briar's past had led to his prickliness, so he often made excuses for Briar, when I really felt he should have pointed out his behavior. Then again, Briar made it pretty difficult to have a heart to heart since Casey feared he'd up and run. It wasn't exactly healthy.

Please don't think I disliked the book, because I really didn't. There were so many Marty moments and he literally SHINED in all of them. The addition of Charlie, whom I am thrilled is the MC for the next book, was awesome. He is such a freaking sweetheart and I liked that he and Briar became close so Briar had a friend in his corner. Briar does have some character growth as we neared the end and we also get the whole story of why he's so closed off. Getting his POV in the epilogue, actually hearing how much he really loved and appreciated Casey, was just what I needed for the solidification of their HEA.

While this was sweet I enjoyed this the least of this series so far and I think it's mainly due to the fact that Briar is lying for so long and Casey is so patient and darling and I just want them to both be happy instead. The epilogue from Briars POV went a long way in me being happier with the book in total though!

I think this series has run it's course

Same old same old

Also, of I had to hear one more time how Marty isn't stupid or whatever 😤

WE GET IT

Also Briar was a douchebag and severely unlovable
The other MC, i forget his name, is a doormat

The romance was not only nonexistent but unbelievable and had to basis

This book follows on with the frat guys we know and love. This is book 3 and definitely had a different vibe than the others. Briar's character is hard to get a read on, he is secretive and quiet, but catch him off guard and he will bite. Casey didn't mind the thorns, he could get past them. He couldn't hold back his attraction to Briar. This was Casey's first time with a man so the intimacy is slow paced and light on the spice. There are lots more members of the fraternity who would warrant a story, but it's Charlie's turn at love next. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I liked a couple of the books in the series but this one, meh. I think it all depends on Briar's sexual expression being attractive to Casey and the reader being interested on it, because other than that I really really did not like Briar, he kept lying, and it is never clear why he did not have other plans other than getting into a fraternity (and he is taking a spot which could have been needed by somebody else...). Yeah, bad situation all round, but he was lying and lying and technically speaking, he kind of got into the fraternity or Casey kept not looking too deeply into his story because of attraction. I never really got that the relationship really was equal or that they were both good for one another.

I was looking forward to this femboy-in-a-frat story but Briar rubbed me the wrong way. Prickly with reasons that are finally revealed is still prickly. If it had been dual POV and we could see what Briar was dealing with all along instead of at the same time that Casey learns the truth, we would've had more sympathy for his lying and the hot and cold treatment of Casey. Since this was basically one long lack of communication trope, it was hard to love this couple the way I have the previous three.

I listened to the fantastic audio and Nick J. Russo.

4.25 stars.

This series cheers me up every time. You have this Virginia frat house that’s ride-or-die for the queer and POC brothers while being very goofy and bro-y, and it’s just so refreshing. Amazing characters. I loved the “drag for charity” scene, and even though his book was the previous one, Marty still stole the show. Also loved meeting Charlie, I’m excited for his book coming up.

It’s neat to see Casey and Briar’s (very hot) story, and while Briar’s trust issues were frustrating at first, they’re pretty understandable later on. Love their dynamic.

Book 2 is still my favorite, but this and book 1 are tied for second.

Spice: 4/5

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I know without a doubt I'm going to love anything written by Lisa Henry and this book with co-author, Sarah Honey, is no exception.

Great characters are what makes books by these authors so fab. Briar is spiky, yet vulnerable and Casey is just plain nice but not boring. The other guys in the fraternity were a great mix of characters too and I would really like to read the stories about them, they are definitely on my tbr list. I loved Charlie!

Whilst I loved the characters and the storyline was good, this was not quite a 4+ star read for me.

I did feel as though I wanted a bit more. A slower burn, more resistance, more conflict, more...just more. I'm greedy, I know. I felt that the dickhead that was Evan was a storyline that didn't really go anywhere. Maybe his will be a future story.

All that said, greedy reader aside, I completely recommend reading this book because it's a lovely read. It just is. A hot chocolate and slippers story. Maybe there's a little rum in that hot chocolate, comfy but not boring.
