firstly, thank you to the publisher for an arc!

4.5 stars — you might as well be the one is ultimately a gender swapped 500 days of summer, except in manga form. i am interested in seeing where this goes, so i’ll be continuing the series to see how sanari’s and nakajo’s relationship develops, but i have a feeling nakajo won’t wait for sanari to change…

Thank you Kodansha for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This review is for volume 1 only.

Ichika is on the lookout for a boyfriend. Instead, she meets and befriends Kosei - the two get along really well Ichika begins to develop feelings for him. Kosei, however, doesn't do serious relationships and offers they can be friends or casual lovers. Ichika only wants a serious relationship but agrees to remain friends.

The art is really pretty, I actually like the inside art more than the covers. I think this is off on a good start - both characters seem quite mature and likeable in their own way. They do really have good chemistry and I appreciate that Kosei is upfront about not wanting a serious relationship. Ichika is also a nice main character with a good portion of confidence, I like that she's got fairly specific standards. Because they agree to be friends and are both upfront on how they feel about things, this does dip into a bit of an angsty territory with blurred lines between friendship and more. At this stage, I would like to continue following their story, I think the main thing would really be how long this series ends up becoming as I can also see this turning into a bit of a drawn out slog. Fingers crossed!

The art style was really cute, and I really liked the FMC - she's strong and interesting.

The MMC is such a playboy and a major red flag. Honestly, the girl should run, though he's kind of hot?? lol

Overall, this was a fun read, and I'm curious to see what happens next.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

mega mega süß! erinnert mich vom zeichenstil manchmal an ai yazawa.

So this manga was pretty cute but goodness, this guy is a major red flag. 🚩 I don’t like him at all; his insistence that she’s too good for him… She really needs to move on and find a man who respects her more.

Still, it was a fun read and I liked the FMC quite a lot!

ML is a very smartly written character, giving the FL the last word without actually doing it. He's fully aware that he's not really rejecting her, and that glimpse of hope is what keeps the "I can fix him" thought in the FL head.

He hangs out with her and dates her without a label, all the while knowing she's attracted to him. He mentions the friends with benefit (FWB) thing to assert that he will only accept this aside from friendship, which will make her more desperate for more. He gives her options to give her the illusion of choice. He shows self-control from not pouncing on her to tantalize her. I am not 100% sure about this, but IRL his actions look purely manipulative. He's definitely a red flag for me. In real life, this is not a red flag, is a red freaking wall, but this is manga universe so go gurl.

Unhealthy and destructive.. It hurts so bad, yet i like reading these stuff lol. Angst college modern romance is why I’m even alive.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Love the main girl! SAVE YOURSELF AND RUN AWAY. YOU’RE TOO GOOD FOR HIM; HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! He is just toying with your feelings, and it was completely unfair. Just because he's being honest, it doesn't excuse him from simply being a bad person.

First of all, thanks NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read an ARC of this story.

I love starting new manga series and watch the romance develop volume after volumen, so I was excited when I saw this one in NetGalley. Its synopsis caught my attention, since I like a good friends-to-lovers storyline. Unfortunately, «You Might As Well Be The One» didn’t live up to my expectations.

I’ll start by saying what I really loved: Megumu Seto’s style. The author has a really nice way of drawing her characters. I specially fell in love with Ichika’s looking and expressions, I connected with her immediately. It didn’t happen that way with Kosei, who I found annoying and quite plain.

Ichiko is looking for love, she’s tired of boys who don’t commit so now she’s searching for a forever love, someone who will stay. She meets Kosei and she connects with him instantly. They become friends, they have a lot of things in common and their bond grows stronger. She starts falling in love with him, but he’s clear that he doesn’t want a relationship, he wants to keep things casual with the girls he’s meeting. Everything would be fine for me if it wasn’t because he plays with her and her feelings; he knows she’s into him —she talks and is open about it— and he keeps rejecting her BUT doesn’t stop being ambiguous, doesn’t stop being close to her, doing gestures... He doesn’t let her be. He wants everything, all at once, but without commitment and that doesn’t sit well with me since he knows her situation, what she wants and what she needs. I didn’t really feel the connection between those two, their relationship is too one-sided for my liking.

This story wasn’t for me but it kept me entertained for a few hours. I hope that he changes through the next volumes and stops playing with her, I really think she deserves it —although the best ending for this story, for me, would be for her to find someone else, someone worthy of her love—.

Let that man go.

I like Josei, the relationship is too realistic (situationships) and the plot is really interesting. There’s so much angst and the ML is so flawed — I think it’s nice. But if I was her friend, I would have to pray hard and smack the out of her to tell her to move on! 😕🙏🏻

Pretty art and a cute FMC. I want to like the MMC, but whatever trauma he is hiding (necessary to draw out the story longer than a single volume) makes him a bit of a jerk from time to time. Hopefully he can improve without ending the storyline too quickly.

𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿: readers who love slow manga romances, quiet longing, complicated feelings, pining, and that painful little hope that maybe someone will choose to become the person you need them to be.

There is something both sweet and heartbreaking about falling for someone you know might not be good for your heart, and this story sits right in that feeling. That little voice telling you that maybe, just maybe, things will work out. Maybe they will change. Maybe they will decide you're worth choosing. Is it always the smartest idea? Absolutely not. But feelings are rarely known for sitting down with a notebook and making a sensible list of pros and cons before getting involved. 😅

This story captured that ache really well for me. That confusing place between knowing what you want and knowing the person in front of you might not be able to give it. I've been there before, hoping for something that wasn't quite being offered, and this brought back that feeling of wanting something to work even when you know it might hurt.

And now I need to know what happens.

This first volume felt exactly like that: a beginning. A little taste of something much bigger. It didn't rush, and honestly I didn't want it to. The slow build, the longing, and the little moments between them are what made it work.

The artwork matched the story beautifully too. Simple without feeling empty, soft without being boring. It let those quiet emotional moments breathe.

I don't know yet if he will become the person she hopes he can be. I don't know if my heart will be happy or if volume two is waiting somewhere with a tiny emotional hammer ready to cause damage. 😂 But I absolutely want to find out.

My only real complaint is that I reached the end and immediately realised I only had the first little piece of the story. Very inconvenient when the next volume is not sitting right there waiting for me.

✨ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱:
• The longing and complicated feelings
• Those little moments of sweetness and care between them
• Watching a friendship slowly become something more complicated

🌧️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱:
• Sometimes I wanted to gently shake her through the pages
• It very much feels like the first piece of a bigger story
• The tragedy of needing volume two immediately and not having it

A little thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for opening the door and letting me wander into this story. All thoughts, feelings, and bookish ramblings I brought back are entirely my own. 📖✨

Quick Summary: An "It's not me" NA romance

My Review: You Might As Well Be the One by Megumu Seto is Book 1 in the You Might As Well Be the One series. It is categorized as "Comics, Graphic Novels, Manga | Romance | Teens & YA." The book is being released on 8/11/26.

About the Book: "College girl Ichika's looking for love, and her new friend Kosei's perfect—he's kind, cute, and loves all the same movies—except he's looking to keep it casual. She knows she must not fall for him…and yet…!"

In My Own Words: Two college students meet and connect, but they choose to proceed forward as friends only. Could they/should they be something more...or not?

What I Liked/Loved:

🔐 - I loved the setting. The college setting reminded me of Love O2O.

❤️ - I loved the unassuming way Ichika and Kosei met. They had a good time right off the bat.

✨ - I liked both leads. The fact that they did not have themselves all together and were trying to figure out where they stood with each other said a lot. It made me want to understand them more.

💖 - I really liked how the leads shared common interests. This solidified their connection.

💯 - I liked the unsaid and totally felt tension that existed between the friends. It gave off a will they/won't they energy.

👀 - I loved the rain & towel scene.

❓️ - I liked the ending and how it left me wanting more.

🎨 - I loved the artwork and illustrations. They were fun and easy to follow.

My Final Say: I am genuinely looking forward to reading volume 2. Let's go!

This story gave off a young, contemporary vibe. It was filled with the kind of realness that comes with college life. When it comes to navigating new adult relationships, this volume is absolutely giving!

Other: Readers who enjoy college friendships/relationships/situationships and stories with an up & down, tug-of-war, back & forth tone will like this volume (and I dare say the series).

Manga | Casual Dating | School Life

Thank you to Kodansha for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

• Plot:
You Might As Well Be the One is about a female MC, who is an engineering student, who goes to a party her friend arranged to meet her special someone. She craves someone she can have conversations with, not just for looks. While there, she meets a guy who seems pretty chill at first.

• What I Liked:
The male MC she falls in love with who is a ladies man is just a friend who encourages her to find someone better suited to her, despite their time together.

• What Didn’t Work for Me:
The Male MC just wants to hook up with girls casually; he’s not a keeper, and that’s the core of the story. The female MC kind of sees him through rose-colored glasses and takes the little gestures he makes to mean more than they do. I doubt she can change him.

• Themes / Ideas:
Casual relationships, loving the wrong person, situationships, friends, ladies' man.

• Who I’d Recommend It To:
If you’re interested in reading about a female MC who thinks she can win over a ladies' man who just wants casual relationships, besides a friendship.

• Overall Thoughts:
They do things together that people who are mutually dating do, like going to an amusement park or hanging out, but they both view their relationship differently. She has fallen in love with him and sees him as more than just a friend. He views her as just a friend and feels she deserves someone better because he doesn’t want to put any energy into an actual relationship. I doubt she can change his mind, and wonder if the remaining volumes will be her trying to persuade or influence him to choose her over everyone else. It’s probably better if she just found someone else who matches what she wants, but I guess it’s based on the real world, where it’s kinda tough to form relationships with people, and options seem slim. I'm not sure if I'll continue reading this because the story is a bit hollow.

I was so stoked to have opened my inbox to this today! A short, sweet little rom-com comic that I read in under an hour post-work.

The Vibe
You Might as Well Be the One is a conventional lighthearted rom-com comic.

Our male protagonist is very much a classic player, but we just KNOW he will be embarrassingly down bad it will be comedic later on (or at least that is my guess).

"I only hook up with girls who are cool with keeping it casual".

The banter was so funny. The reactions, the glances, the accidental (or perhaps intentional) touching/ grazing of fingers, all there.. It is a medium burn, I would say. It is obvious that the attraction is there, but I am here for the comedy.

The Artwork
The art was so detailed and beautiful? The FMC's different hairstyles, the piercings, the smiles! The illustrator clearly knows that eyes carry a story — the close-up panels on expressions are done so well (especially the glances and suppressed smiles/blushing when there is no dialogue). The were so diverse, we have dressed down, dressed up for dates, more traditional looks and there is real variety and personality in the character design. I loved how they showcased it.

The balance of close-up and wide panels is perfect. Nothing feels cramped visually so that the spacing gives you room to read what is happening.

Characters
We do not know a lot about the male protagonist He is casual-situationship-guy who is likely about to catch feelings. I am so exciting to find out whats beneath the surface. Volume 2, please explain his backstory!

💬 Quotes
"Being tall has its advantages, don't you think?"

Recommendation:
If you love a cozy rom com here you go!

Ichika Nakajo wants a boyfriend. Her flashy looks make it hard for Ichika to meet the kind of men she is looking for. She attends a mixer in hopes of finding one, only to end up in disappointment. Ichika does make a new friend. Kosei Sanari is perfect. The two share many of the same interests. There is just one problem: Kosei is not interested in a long-term relationship, just casual hook-ups. Will Kosei end up breaking Ichika’s heart?
What I like the most about Ichika is how she is not conceited about her appearance. She does not dress to gain other people’s attention nor is she self-absorbed. Ichika is fully aware of her self-worth. I like how she is upfront with Kosei about searching for a boyfriend. I understand her frustration. She finally finds someone she clicks with… then discovers he is not interested in permanent relationships.
I am on the fence about Kosei. I like that he tells Ichika straight out that he is not boyfriend material. He cautions her about falling for him, and he pushes and encourages her to still look for ‘the one’. However, I feel that he is giving Ichika mixed signals. He gives off this hot and cold vibe. I sense there is a reason or trauma behind Kosei’s preference for casual relationships. Perhaps it will be explored in further volumes.
I like that the story is centered around college students. It is a nice change-of-pace from high school romances. I am not sure if I will be continuing this manga series. It just did not really grab me or my interest like some others did.

Are There Gay People in this?*: ❌

Enjoyable, but both MCs really need to get a grip

The art is super cute, and I had a ton of fun reading this; however, as someone aromantic, this whole situation is my nightmare. There is nothing wrong with only wanting casual hookups as long as everyone involved understands that! The MMC isn't cheating and he is super upfront with what he wants and what he doesn't, and it's really frustrating the the FMC feels like their relationship isn't enough unless it's romantic. With that being said, Kosei does start giving mixed signals towards the end, and the whole "you're too good for me" thing always annoys me. Also, if you ever find yourself saying "you should thank me for not going further last night" maybe you should take a step back and reconsider how you got there.

Overall: I am too aromantic to really enjoy this I think.

* I count a book as including gay people if any of the main or secondary characters are implicitly or explicitly queer or trans. This does not necessarily mean the protagonist is queer or that there is a queer romance

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Megumu Seto, and Kodansha Comics for this eARC!

This book is infuriating, and I couldn't put it down. Najako has been just fine being single until her friends decide to set up a little get-together for her to find her perfect match. Unfortunately, she doesn't find love, but she does find a new friend, Sanari. Her friends continuously warn her that Sanari is a player and will never settle down. However, Najako cannot get enough of him. As their friendship blossoms, so do her unrequited feelings. She begins to wonder if Sanari can ever change his ways.

Wow! Like I said above, I really enjoyed this book. Most of the time I wanted to strangle Sanari, and I wanted better for Najako. However, I recognize in myself that I would have done (maybe have done) the exact same thing as her. When you catch feelings, sometimes there is nothing you can do about it and it's exciting and frustrating at the same time. When someone knows you so perfectly, it feels like they almost know you better than yourself or even your best friends. I really enjoyed this book and gave it 3.75 stars. I cannot wait for the next one to come out and see where this relationship or lack thereof goes!

You Might As Well Be the One Vol. 1 hooked me from the first page. Ichika feels genuinely real. She’s a woman who knows what she wants and keeps running into people who can’t see past her appearance, and that frustration is written so honestly it’s hard not to root for her immediately. The dynamic with Kosei clicks in a way that feels earned rather than forced, and the artwork does a lot of heavy lifting here. The emotions are drawn so precisely that you feel every shift before the characters even speak.

The big reveal at the end of the volume is technically spoiled by the blurb, so if you’ve read the synopsis you’ll see it coming. But honestly it didn’t matter. The scene still hit hard. If you’ve ever been in a situationship you will feel this one in your gut. It’s the kind of moment that makes you want to flip straight to volume two for answers. My only real hope going forward is that we get a fuller picture of Kosei’s side of things, because right now I have a lot of questions. A really strong start.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
