“In the morning, when she did finally get up, Ann went around the house turning off each lamp. Somehow, the lamps burning in the daylight made her feel sad. For they burned, but they shed no light.”
“Ann had dropped in to visit her neighbor Bob, but Bob was not alone. His friend Carl was there. It soon became obvious to Ann that Carl was coming on to her. He tried first to catch her attention. He wanted her to know that he wasn't just a common jerk. He wanted her to know that he was an admirer of grace and beauty. That was why he loved tarantulas. Because of their beauty. He insisted. He really did love them. Carl was large with hairy hands. Ann got up and said goodby. She had to fly. She liked Carl and tarantulas about equally.
