Life has a way of changing your path--and Claire Karadec certainly didn't plan on a fork in the road in her forties.
After a painfully public discovery shatters her marriage, along with her picture-perfect, country club life, Claire finds herself suddenly single and faced with a blank page for a future. On that page she writes a simple list that reads like equal parts dare and daydream--Move to a new city. Make a real friend. Get a job I love--and she vows to accomplish every single one.
Before she can talk herself out of it, she takes a step of faith, puts her old life in the rearview mirror, and leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart. This one step sends Claire on a journey of self-discovery, giving her the courage to conquer her fears, one checklist item at a time, and showing her that life can be a whole lot brighter than she imagined.
She rediscovers a love for baking, stumbles into new friendships, and even allows her daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is Miles, the charming, off-limits neighbor whose kindness makes it hard to remember why he's off-limits at all.
Between late-night journaling, disastrous first dates, great big lessons and priceless small victories, Claire learns to quiet the voice telling her she wasn't enough and listens to the one that asks the harder question . . .
What do I really want?
As old expectations loosen their grip, Claire discovers that belonging isn't a place you're invited to--it's a life you build one brave choice at a time. And the sweetest things often show up when you finally get out of your own way.

Courtney Walsh does it again with another fantastic book! Her writing is warm, honest, funny, and pulls you in so you can’t stop reading.
It was refreshing to read a story with characters in their 40s. I really enjoyed Claire’s character, and although I have never personally been married or gone through a divorce, I found myself relating to and inspired by her. I especially loved that she didn’t allow her divorce to completely break her spirit and wasn’t afraid to put herself out there again.
I loved the dynamic between Claire and Miles. It was a very slow friendship to more, which is my kind of romance. It developed naturally as they both were healing and growing from past hurts.
This is one of those stories that reminds you it’s never too late to start over, and you don’t have to let your past or bad experiences dictate your future.
I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook, and the narrator was fantastic! She brought this story to life in the best way, and I highly recommend it!
Thank you, NetGalley and Thomas Nelson, for an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Content to consider: Kisses only romance, no language, mention of marital infidelity, divorce
To say I’m obsessed with this book is a bit of an understatement. The humor and intrigue immediately drew me in, and the thought-provoking life lessons will surely keep you around. Courtney has such a gift of creating characters that feel real and relatable. This story had the elements of an elite 80’s or 90’s RomCom movie, coupled together with the perfect amount of rawness and depth. The relationships forged within these pages were simply the best. Also, one of the most heartwarming and inspiring epilogues I think I’ve ever read. I’m not sure I’ve ever been this upset to finish a book because I wasn’t yet ready to part with the characters.
After 20+ years of marriage, 46-year-old Claire Karadec finds herself divorced from her husband who didn’t seem to know the definition of fidelity. She’s spent her life dedicated to lifting this man up in his high profile, country club lifestyle, only to be stabbed in the back. Now it’s time to pick up her shattered pieces, step out in faith and start life over again. She starts by making a list of goals. Step one – move to Chicago for a fresh start in a new city. Immediately upon settling into her new apartment Claire starts making new friends who show her a side of herself she never knew existed. She dreams, she journals and she gets herself into plenty of laugh-out-loud first date scenarios that will have you giggling until your sides hurt. I don’t think I’ve ever rooted this hard for a romance in a book before. The FMC and MMC completely captured my heart.
This is a story about growth and change, about facing your fears, starting over and becoming something brighter than you ever thought possible. It’s about found family and those people holding your hand through the storms. It’s about YOU and it’s about ME – I dare you to read through and not find a little bit of yourself within the pages. You don’t have to be middle-aged or to have gone through a tumultuous divorce to relate to the characters in this book. It’s going to touch your heart no matter where you are in life.

I loved following Claire on her journey to a new start. Claire moves to Chicago to start her life over after her messy divorce. I loved seeing her find herself and develop as a person. This was an uplifting and charming story. Outstanding narrator. Highly recommend!
I was blessed with an ALC. Thank you NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.
This is my first time reading a book by Courtney Walsh and i loved every second of it! Loved the story line and the message behind it. You’re never too old to do new things on your own or discover yourself.

4.5 This book felt like I was sitting down and talking with a best friend for the entire duration. The writing is sharp, the story is engaging, and the humor is woven in so perfectly—it was just all around so good! I can’t believe this is my first time reading Courtney Walsh, but it certainly won’t be my last. I’m already looking into her backlist and can’t wait for what she releases next! It was an absolute joy to read, and the narrator's performance really brought this story to life.
Let me first start off by saying I absolutely love anything Courtney Walsh writes so it's no surprise I would love this one too. But this one gets me in the feels as a 40 something leaning into the stage of who am I outside of a wife and mother? How can I be brave in a new city? While my experiences are not the same as Claire I can relate on so many levels which probably made me love this book all the more. I laughed as Claire embarrassed herself yet again. I cried as she recognized the love her friends had for her. I rooted for her in every aspect of her life.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
First off, thank you netgalley, courtney walsh , and thomas nelson for allowing me an ALC copy of this book!!
Finallyyyy a spice free adult romance!! I loved listening to this! I really loved how the characters were older, so they didn’t seem super immature. I also loved how Claire was finally able to find herself (and hobbies) as a person and not just define herself as a mother, as well as divorcee. Again, just super cutesy and such a fun time.
Netgalley: Kindle - THIS WAS THE PERFECT ROMCOM. Full transparency, I thought this was a different author and that I recognized the name. But it was someone completely different who I’d actually seen on Instagram and had wondered about and WOW she did not disappoint.
This book was INCREDIBLE. The writing style was so fun. I laughed, I gasped, I got emotional, I swooned. I loved the growth of the characters throughout the book. I loved the friendships and the community and how her daughter felt like a main character just through texting (which is SO real when you live long distances from family). I feel so attached to the characters in this book- the way they showed up, rallied, and gave love was just incredible. Love love love. I will be picking up another Courtney Walsh and soon.
Thank you netgalley and publishers for the advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh published by Nelson Fiction is a stand alone romance novel. An heartwarming, second chances story that gives all the feels. Claire is freshly divorced, deeply wounded and still hung up on old hurts. She knows she has to start over, but easier said than done. Moving, a job, a relationships and first of all, finding herself. When I start reading a book and immediatedly it's like coming home, then I know I have a found a great read and new fav of mine - aka Brighter than Before. 5 stars.
Brighter than before follows the story of Claire, a recently divorced woman in her mid 40's who has spent the past 20+ years taking care of her husband and daughter in Colorado. After her husband's infidelity and divorce filing; Claire moves to Chicago to start fresh. Claire moves into her new apartment and follows a checklist of items she wishes to accomplish now that she is on her own, such as trying new cuisine, eating alone at a restaurant, make new friends, etc. In her apartment complex, she meets her new neighbors, which includes Miles, the building owner, who is very eager to help her start fresh in Chicago.
Brighter than Before is such an uplifting and positive read that shows that it's never too late to start fresh, despite the obstacles life throws your way.
Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction for providing this audiobook for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Thank you NetGalley and Courtney Walsh for this ARC 🥹
This was a such wholesome read 🫶🏼 As someone who enjoys Hallmark films, this was chefs kiss without the spice 🤣
I love Claire’s character development, she’s in her mid 40s, divorced, her daughter Minnie (Amelia) who is also her hype girl and best friend has supported her through everything while they were both miles apart.
It’s never too late to start again, re-build your life no matter what your age group you’re in— and Claire proved it. She’s a perfect example and she did it by picking up a blank journal and writing a list of things she wants to accomplish all thanks to her therapist to suggested it… and it worked.
She moved to a different city all on her own, she was a stranger until she met the most lovely bunch of people and found the love of her life. She went through the ups and downs but she kept pushing because not everything is perfect.
The only downside for me was the chapters felt a little too long 😅 but overall I enjoyed it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh
Courtney Walsh does it again and honestly, at this point I’m convinced I’d give her grocery list five stars 🤷🏼♀️. Brighter Than Before was everything I wanted and didn’t even realize I needed.
I absolutely loved Claire and Miles. Their story felt real, emotional, and deeply relatable. As a 42-year-old reader, this book spoke straight to my heart the second chances, the self-reflection, the quiet hope that life can still surprise you in the best ways. It’s one of those stories that reminds you it’s never too late to start over or choose yourself.
Courtney’s writing is warm, honest, and effortlessly engaging. She has such a gift for creating characters that feel like real people and moments that linger long after you turn the last page. This book made me smile, made me feel, and left me with that cozy, content feeling only a truly great read can give.
Five stars without hesitation. 💫 If you love emotional, meaningful romance with depth and heart, don’t miss this one.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the audio ARC

Brighter Than Before by Chloe Walsh is an easy 5-star read for me. I originally read this story and completely fell in love with it, so getting the chance to experience it again through audio thanks to NetGalley was such a treat.
The narrator absolutely brought this story to life in the best way. Their performance added so much depth and emotion, making an already powerful story feel even more immersive. It felt like I was experiencing everything alongside the characters all over again.
This is one of those stories that just sticks with you. The emotions, the characters, the journey it all hit just as hard the second time around. Falling in love with it twice is probably the best compliment I can give.
If you’re a fan of emotional, beautifully told stories, I highly recommend both reading and listening to this one. It’s truly something special.
4.75 stars 🌟 this was just too good! i sped through this because the writing and the characters were so engaging 🫂 i absolutely adored claire and have so much admiration for the journey she went through 👩🍳🚕📋 i also really loved miles and how he always saw just how amazing claire really was 🥹 the way their families meshed together was so sweet and i loved how their community came together for The Porch! this was especially good and i’m so glad i picked it up 💖

This isn’t your typical romance story — it’s a story about rebuilding a relationship with the most important person in your life: yourself.
Brighter than Before beautifully explores what it means to start over when you’re in your late forties (the heroine is 46), when the life you once knew has completely fallen apart, and you’re forced to ask yourself: What do I actually want from this life now?
After a painful divorce, the heroine finds herself lost in a reality where the only roles she has known for years — wife and mother — no longer define her. And suddenly she has to face the terrifying question: Who am I now? Armed only with grief, fear of the future, loneliness, and deep insecurity, she begins a difficult but incredibly moving journey toward rediscovering herself.
This book was such a beautiful and emotional experience, one that truly makes you reflect on life, identity, healing, and second chances.
What I loved most about the heroine was her quiet strength — the way she keeps pushing forward despite every challenge life throws at her. Watching her slowly choose herself, her happiness, and her future was incredibly inspiring.
I also adored the sense of community the author created around her. The supporting characters brought so much warmth, comfort, and love to the story.
And the romance… 💘 It’s the kind of love that doesn’t diminish you, but supports you, uplifts you, and helps you become stronger.
I wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful and deeply heartfelt story.

💖 Late-in-life fresh start 🌿 Self-discovery journey 💔 Healing after divorce ☀️ Second chances in life 🏡 Found family 🤍 Emotional healing 📖 Women’s fiction with romance 🫶 Supportive love interest 🌸 Learning to choose yourself 💕 Mature romance
Not bad (since I read it in one sitting that should be obvious), it’s just not written for me. Found the FMC’s 23 year old daughter more interesting than her mother BUT that is not a real criticism.
Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh is such a heartwarming and uplifting read. This story follows Claire, a woman in her 50s who, after a divorce, decides to take a bold step and start over. Moving to Chicago, she builds a new life from scratch—making friends, creating a personal to-do list, and navigating a series of hilariously awful dates before eventually meeting Miles.
What really stood out to me was how refreshing it felt to read a romance centered on an older protagonist. Claire’s journey is inspiring, showing that it’s never too late to rediscover yourself, take risks, and find love again. Her growth throughout the story feels genuine, and I loved watching her step outside of her comfort zone.
The romance itself is sweet and charming, with just the right balance of humor and emotion. While some moments felt a bit predictable, the overall warmth and positivity of the story made it such an enjoyable read.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC! ❤️
This was such a SWEET book! Every Courtney Walsh book I’ve read has left me never wanting it to end. Her stories are just SO good.
Every character was written so well. I loved the new friend, Lennon, partly because my daughter’s name is Lennyn and I haven’t seen her name in a book yet, but also because she was such a sweet friend. A fast friend who became faithful. 🥹 truly loved her so much.
I’m also really thankful that Courtney didn’t stay in the past and sadness for too long. This book is filled with second chances and renewed hope, and I appreciated the happiness woven throughout the story.
One content considerations: this book does include stories involving adultery. Nothing spicy at all, but the situations are discussed. So if you’re sensitive to that topic, just be aware it’s included.
This will definitely be one of my favorite reads of the year! I really loved it and was rooting for Claire the whole time!
Thank you to net galley for my advanced copy of this title, opinions are my own! Courtney Walsh delivers another lighthearted, engaging novel full of humor, heart, and relatable real-life drama. One of my favorite things about this book was reading about a heroine in her 40s rather than the twenty-something protagonists that dominate so many romance novels today. Watching Claire navigate the heartbreak — and occasional embarrassment — of a difficult divorce made her feel especially authentic and easy to root for. She was smart, funny, compassionate, and absolutely the kind of character I’d want to be friends with in real life.
The story also brought Chicago vividly to life and completely convinced me I need to visit in the summertime. The supporting characters added plenty of warmth and humor, making the world feel lively and inviting.
My biggest struggle with the book was the middle section, where the focus shifted heavily between Claire’s dating life and the development of her business. Individually, both storylines were interesting, but alongside the friends-to-lovers romance, it sometimes felt like the novel was juggling too many moving parts at once. Because of that, the pacing occasionally lost focus for me.
Still, this was a charming, feel-good story overall and a perfect summer read for fans of sweet romance.
I truly did like this book. This book follows a 46 year old woman named Claire, who is at her lowest in her life. She is a newly divorced woman, and her rich ex-husband cheated on her with a "younger model." So to find herself, she moves to Chicago and checks off lists she wants to accomplish.
I love following the jounary we go with Claire. I had so many empathic moments for her. I was really rooting for her. I love her new support system she finds in Chicago. I love the bad dates she goes on. I love that she knows what she wants and is using her voice, finally. Her is a green flag man, Miles, that comes around, but he does have some red in it. But that just makes Miles, as a character, have more depth.
There were some parts, I literally, eye rolled because how unrealistic some scenes were. But it did remind me of 2000s romance movies.
Overall, I love the character Claire and how she finds her worth again. I love her support system. I love her career she she finds. The new love she finds. I just love that she finds happiness. 💕
This was an excellent representation of life moving forward if you let it. Divorce is hard, moving forward is hard, life is hard - but it can get a little easier if you let people in and you never know how much someone could help you if you just open the door.
I absolutely loved that these MC’s were finding themselves again in their late 40’s - because life isn’t over, maybe it’s just beginning again. The storyline was cute, and expected but the road to get there was not linear and I loved how little quirks of people along the way popped in.
The audio was well done. Patti Murin did an excellent job. The novel was a bit longer than I would have liked. This is a great book for people who prefer closed door or low spice books, and those with older MC’s.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the opportunity to listen to and review this book ahead of it’s release.
This was such a feel good story! I not only enjoyed getting to know Claire and Miles but also thought the way their daughters fit into the storyline was so good. I thought the way Claire finds a community after going through something life changing filled me with hope for humanity — so much of that storyline felt so real and organic and obtainable.
I felt like the dates Claire went on added so much unpredictable fun to the story and kept waiting for the moment when Miles would first start to show his jealousy!!! LOVE! I also adored Chicago as the setting of such a beautiful story because it’s one of my favorite cities, too. (Go Cubs!)
I primarily consumed this one via audiobook and am no stranger to Patti Murin’s narration. This was another awesome listen by Patti. Her voice is soothing and welcoming and it really does feel like you’re listening to a loved one talk. Patti also narrates project that are such a great fit for her. This was a delight to listen to.
This is a closed door romance and while that’s a difference spice level than what I normally reach for I really enjoyed this and I’m glad to have read it. And happy to report the lack of spice didn’t detract from the love story.
Also! This was my first Courtney Walsh book but it absolutely makes me want to read more of hers.
Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC and ALC copies of this book!
Oh what a joy this was to read. Over the years Courtney Walsh has become one of my favorite authors. I can always count on her to make me either laugh, cry, or both! This new addition to her works was no exception. I especially love that Claire is 46 years old. Reading a love story from the perspective of someone out of their twenties and who has lived a fairly full life already is so refreshing! 10/10 recommend. Thank you for this one, Courtney ❤️
3.75 - Brighter Than Before is a cute, easy to read, heartwarming romcom. After her husband has an affair, Claire, navigates a new reality being single and rediscovering life's joys at 47. Having a middle aged FMC felt refreshing and authentic. I appreciated how the story embraced this stage of life with warmth and honesty. I especially loved the satirical humour and the relatable, often awkward situations Claire finds herself in as she puts herself out there and tries new things.
The narrator did a fantastic job bringing Claire and the supporting cast to life. Her inflection added emotional depth to key moments, and she delivered distinct, believable character voices and accents that made it easy to stay immersed in the story
Thank you Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This story was really sweet! It was less of a romcom than I expected and more of a romance/self-discovery novel (though it did have a lot of good funny moments), but I enjoyed it nonetheless! I usually tend to avoid any sort of divorce-based storyline, but I love anything Courtney Walsh writes and was willing to give it a shot. It ended up being a really great read.
Loved the “older” (late 40s) main characters — they both were really likeable and fun. I kind of wished there were dual points of view, but I still thought Claire’s perspective (including her journal entries) was well done. I loved that Claire and Miles develop a friendship before there’s romantic interest — it really added to their relationship building and character growth. I enjoyed the side characters, also! The “found family” aspect of this story was sweet and added a lot to Claire’s story.
The Chicago setting was a lot of fun. I’ve loved how many of Courtney’s books have been set in the Chicago area. I know very little about that part of the country and have learned a lot about that region from her books, which is cool. Chicago is now officially on my list of cities I want to visit!
It was a unique story with lots of inspiration and hope, and I’m really glad I read it.
❗️Content considerations: Low spice (kissing only but reference to people “sleeping together” and minor references to physical intimacy), light descriptions of marital infidelity, non-descriptive reference to nudity, no swearing
💭Age recommendation: adult
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for a free e-ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
THIS WAS SO FREAKING SWEET OMG!!!!!! Such a heartwarming story about a woman trying to find herself and her place in the world after the end of her marriage. I absolutely loved this, I loved Claire and seeing her bravery and moments of joy. Also MILES???? What a a beautiful green flag man, he was actually an angel and I loved how selfless he was and how genuinely kind he was. Their friendship was everything, I loved the slow burn too.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
Another win for a sweet rom com; love the middle aged divorced woman starting over and reaching for her dreams, reminding us that it’s never too late to do something new; the MMC is a dream, minor characters are quirky and loveable, and as always her book had me laughing out loud
Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I loved this one & absolutely inhaled it. I always enjoy Courtney Walsh's wonderful characters, humor and clean writing. I especially connected with this story because the FMC was in her mid-40s, which is so rare to find in a rom-com! I loved watching Claire fight back after a devastating divorce and show tremendous bravery through a fresh start in a new city. I loved her chemistry with Miles and both of their relationships with their young adult children. Other great things are the found family vibe, the fun plotline of starting a bakery and the humor of dating app mishaps. I smiled so much during this book!
