Life has a way of changing your path--and Claire Karadec certainly didn't plan on a fork in the road in her forties.
After a painfully public discovery shatters her marriage, along with her picture-perfect, country club life, Claire finds herself suddenly single and faced with a blank page for a future. On that page she writes a simple list that reads like equal parts dare and daydream--Move to a new city. Make a real friend. Get a job I love--and she vows to accomplish every single one.
Before she can talk herself out of it, she takes a step of faith, puts her old life in the rearview mirror, and leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart. This one step sends Claire on a journey of self-discovery, giving her the courage to conquer her fears, one checklist item at a time, and showing her that life can be a whole lot brighter than she imagined.
She rediscovers a love for baking, stumbles into new friendships, and even allows her daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is Miles, the charming, off-limits neighbor whose kindness makes it hard to remember why he's off-limits at all.
Between late-night journaling, disastrous first dates, great big lessons and priceless small victories, Claire learns to quiet the voice telling her she wasn't enough and listens to the one that asks the harder question . . .
What do I really want?
As old expectations loosen their grip, Claire discovers that belonging isn't a place you're invited to--it's a life you build one brave choice at a time. And the sweetest things often show up when you finally get out of your own way.

This is my first time reading a book by Courtney Walsh and i loved every second of it! Loved the story line and the message behind it. You’re never too old to do new things on your own or discover yourself.

Courtney Walsh can always be defended upon to provide an uplifting, heartfelt, comedic story while keeping all her content clean! The cover design on this one was SO CUTE!
I loved Walsh’s last novel, Everything’s Coming Up Rosie and was looking forward to diving into this one. Though there were parts of the novel that didn’t hold my attention as much as I would’ve liked and some pretty boring / predictable spots, overall I enjoyed the story! Lennon was my favorite character and I liked the community-oriented apartment complex. I loved the growth and resilience Claire displayed and really liked the whole supporting casts—her friends!
After a relational crisis in her 40s, Claire sets off on a new adventure to declare change in her own life by taking action to discover what truly makes her happy. She makes a list of goals comprised to find out who she is apart from being a wife / mom and starts a new life for herself. And what she discovers along the way teaches her life can be a whole lot brighter than before. A story of friendship and rediscovery set against the backdrop of Chicago and a friendly, community-oriented apartment complex.

This was the perfect combination of romance and women's fiction. I love Miles (who, for whatever reason, has a Scottish accent in my head) and Claire. I admire Claire's determination to change her life and finally change her life and make it what she wants it to be. this story is absolutely filled with character growth, embracing your dreams, and learning that it's never too late to start over.

This book is about a woman who is finding herself again after being tied to a man who held her back and suppressed her opinions and dreams. She decides to start over, moves to a new city, makes new friends, and finally begins to go after the life she actually wants. I really enjoyed reading about this journey. One of my favourite parts was how she built friendships in her new city. The friend group and their dynamics were fun, warm, and added so much to the story. I also really liked the family aspects that were woven throughout the book. Everything felt supportive and comforting. The romance was another highlight for me. I really liked the male love interest, especially how their dynamic started out. I loved watching their relationship grow naturally from friendship into something more. The way that transition was handled felt very thoughtful and well done, and I genuinely enjoyed them as a couple. I also found her journey of pursuing her dreams very inspiring and hopeful. It made the story feel uplifting and motivating without being unrealistic. There was one small thing about the ending that I didn’t completely love, but I won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers. It wasn’t a major issue and didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the book. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would definitely recommend it. I don’t think this book is necessarily aimed at younger readers, but I can easily see it appealing to people in their mid-twenties as well as readers in their forties.
Claire is figuring out what the second half of her life is going to look like after heartbreak. Her husband of 23 years, John, cheated on her and is now getting married to the sidepiece, Misty. She can't bear the humiliation of living in Colorado where her whole community is, and needs to find out who she is apart from a wife and mother. Her divorce newly finalized, she moves to Chicago and makes a list of things she wants to do- get a dog, get real friends, and download a dating app. Her neighbor Miles owns the apartment building she gets and apartment in, and he helps her along the way as she tries dating for the first time, kind of ever.
This book really made me feel seen. Being humiliated by John was only her first embarrassment, but later when Claire makes mistakes she learns how to pick herself back up and try again. If you like a clean/closed-door romcom with a FMC in her 40's, friends-to-lovers please pick this up. It is not the complicated and dramatic and sad plot in many lovely books. This one is a lot more like a Hallmark movie, it is perfect in its pure simplicity. The characters do have some tragic back story, but this is not the story, it is more about the every day, the inner dialogue that is perfect for a character learning who they are.
I loved the text message exchanges between Claire and her adult daughter Minnie, her quirky first dates that go nowhere, and her tiny triumphs. This book was honestly a real joy to read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. Book to be published June 8, 2026.
Claire Karadec falls apart after she discovers her husband John has been having an affair ... and all their friends knew. Twenty years of marriage, supporting his career, just gone in a puff of smoke. After a particularly humiliating episode a year later, she decides enough is enough and things have to change. Rather recklessly she sells the house and moves to Chicago, a city she always wanted to live, with a dream of finding a career and a new life.
Navigating living alone for the first time in her life, trying to get a job, and being dragged kicking and screaming into the dating scene by her daughter Minnie (at college in Oxford), Claire notices a sexy male neighbour seems to have a revolving door of beautiful young women leaving his apartment - who turns out to be the owner of the apartment block, which she only finds out after yet another embarrassing incident, this time involving a face pack, a dressing gown and an automatically locking apartment door. Anyway, her landlord Miles turns out to be a nice guy, albeit with an aversion to commitment, and he is soon conspiring with Minnie to get Claire some non-serial killer dates.
I did enjoy this and it was easy beach reading material but honestly I felt Claire was a totally unrealistic person. Her background, the fact that she had never eaten any foreign food of any description (like even Mediterranean), the multiple Goldie Hawn-esque kooky catastrophes, they all just felt like plot devices.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.
When Claire discovers her husband tucked away in a corner of their country club kissing a much younger woman, her world shifts in an instant. The life she thought she’d built—comfortable, privileged, predictable—comes to an abrupt end. Determined to reclaim her future, she creates a list of brave new steps, starting with a move to a brand-new city. Soon she’s settling into a cozy apartment in Chicago, leaving her old life in Denver behind. As Claire begins this next chapter, she rediscovers her love of baking, lets her daughter set up a dating-app profile, and slowly starts forming new friendships. One of those friendships is with Miles—the kind, handsome, recently divorced owner of her apartment building. Though he’s decidedly off-limits, their easy connection becomes one of the unexpected joys of her new life. Between disastrous first dates, moments of self-doubt, and the steady encouragement of new friends, Claire learns what it means to be brave, to try again, and to believe that life can still hold beautiful surprises. Courtney Walsh has long been one of my favorite authors, and this book is a perfect example of why. Her writing blends humor, heart, and hope with unforgettable, lovable characters. Brighter Than Before is a charming, uplifting story I thoroughly enjoyed. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! Really cute! She writes really cute and funny romance stories. I enjoyed Claire’s character development and how solid Miles was throughout her journey. The book was a bit long for what it was as it was pretty predictable from the beginning but I still loved it.
Claire’s relationship with her daughter was one of my favorites and I loved how close they were even though they lived countries away from each other. John was a jerk and I was glad she found a beautiful life without him. A wonderful clean rom-com!
"You walk up to a table with an empty seat and ask whoever's sitting there if you can join them. Maybe ask if they want to be friends. Ask what they like. It's all about listening to other people. People like to talk about themselves. The only way to have a friend is to be a friend, sweetheart. Remember that."
“Sometimes I think if we chose to focus on the things that made us similar more than the things that make us different, the world would be a much kinder place.”
"If you rush, Claire, you defeat the purpose of baking. If you go slow, it'll calm you down. And all the noise of the world will just... fall away."
“Just because I wouldn't have chosen this outcome for my life doesn't mean my life can't become something beautiful.”
Brighter Than Before is a gentle reminder that sometimes the best glow-up doesn’t involve a revenge body or a dramatic haircut—just a woman finally choosing herself.
Claire is recently divorced, solidly middle-aged, and deeply done with performing the role her ex-husband wrote for her. After years of squeezing herself into someone else’s idea of a wife, she moves to Chicago in search of a quieter, simpler, less emotionally exhausting life. Enter: the list. Claire’s list of things she wants to do, try, become. It’s practical, hopeful, and honestly a little inspiring.
Chicago turns out to be exactly what she needs—new routines, new confidence, and, of course, a charming neighbor. Miles is dashing in that low-key, emotionally competent way: kind, sweet, supportive, and definitely not looking for a relationship. Which, obviously, means he is absolutely looking for a relationship—just not on purpose.
The romance unfolds predictably, but in a comforting way. This isn’t a book about sparks flying and walls crumbling; it’s about warmth, steadiness, and two people gently making space for each other.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the opportunity to read Brighter than Before.
This was my first time reading one of Courtney Walsh’s books, and I genuinely enjoyed it so much that I’ll definitely be picking up more of her work in the future.
This story follows the Claire as she navigates life after a divorce and figures out who she is beyond being a wife or a mother. I really appreciated how honest and gentle that journey felt. It explored change, identity, and starting over in a way that never felt heavy or overwhelming.
The book was quite funny overall, and Miles was an absolute standout for me. He had me laughing more than once and brought so much charm and warmth to the story. The connection between the two main characters was very cute, light-hearted, and easy to root for. Their dynamic felt natural and sweet, making the romance feel comforting rather than rushed.
This was an emotional yet uplifting read that balanced humor with heart beautifully.
If you’re looking for a feel-good romance with meaningful character growth and plenty of laughs along the way, I’d definitely recommend Brighter Than Before.

3.5! Cute! This is a romance novel but honestly I think just calling it a "feel good" read is probably more appropriate.
Claire finds herself divorced at 46 after her marriage of 23 years implodes. She is trying to put her life back together and starts over in Chicago, somewhere she always wanted to move but her ex-husband never agreed. Claire isn't quite sure who she wants to be or what she wants so she sets out on a mission to figure that out in the most type A way possible, a list. This was cute. I read it in one day. There is a ragtag group pf characters and while it is a romance there is negative spice. I did feel that the ending should have been wrapped up a little sooner, but other than that I found it enjoyable!
If you are looking for a quick, sweet, easy read or a book to get you out of a slump then this is it!

Brighter Than Before is pure comfort in book form. It’s heartfelt, hopeful, and had me smiling and giggling more times than I can count. Claire is so real that even if you haven't gone through exactly what she has you can still easily find a way to relate to her. Miles.... whew... what a man! He was pushy without being annoying and too pushy. He was exactly what Claire needed. Lennon is the best friend we all need! I loved all of the characters I was supposed to and disliked all of the others haha. Courtney Walsh just gets how to write characters that feel real and stories that hug you right when you need it. Sweet, emotional, and impossible not to love. The life lessons in this book, I believe, are some that we all need at some point in our lives. This is a warm, comforting read that reminds you that even after hard times, brighter days really can come. Total five star read for me.

Courtney Walsh is my go-to comfort read. She's reliably light and I can count on a happily-ever-after. This story is fresh because the main characters are older--in their mid-forties--and that changes the depth right from the beginning. After an unexpected and unhappy divorce, Claire sets off on her own to take charge of her own life and discover what makes her happy to her core. The book is a love letter to Chicago in so many ways and the sense of place is strong and bright. Claire's new community-oriented apartment complex is a hopeful place for her to begin again. Her new friendships were believable. I loved the growth and resilience Claire displayed and really liked the whole supporting casts—her friends! This one will have you thinking about making a goal list of your own.

What a gorgeous read! This is not just a sweet romcom, but also a pep talk for all of us who need to hear that the world doesn’t end after a bad experience, no matter how bad.
I fell in love with Claire and her moving forward regardless of being scared and scarred badly. All (well… almost all) of the characters in this book are just so loveable, that you’d want them to be your people too. We all need people like them in our lives. Fun, loving and caring.
I’d recommend this to everyone who loves a story full of love, hope, courage, a little sadness and feeling humiliated, friendship and fulfilling your dreams.
This is not the first book written by Courtney Walsh that I’ve read and it sure won’t be the last. Thank you to Courtney Walsh, NetGalley and Thomas Nelson fiction for this ARC!
Courtney Walsh’s latest novel, Brighter Than Before, may be her best work yet. I’ve always loved her writing style and the way she creates relatable characters and storylines that feel genuine and heartfelt. I especially appreciate her no-spice, rom-com approach—reading clean books is so refreshing, and it allows me to recommend her stories to others with confidence. I find myself suggesting her books all the time.
This latest story follows Clare, a forty-something woman who finds herself newly single after her husband’s infidelity. As Clare navigates starting over, she faces her fears head-on and discovers that it’s never too late for love, friendship, and new adventures. Brighter Than Before is a story about meeting new people, taking chances, and embracing fresh beginnings. It’s truly a gem of a book.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this book so much. Courtney Walsh has a gift for creating characters you can’t help but adore, and Claire and Miles were no exception. Claire’s growth after her ugly divorce was one of my favorite comeback stories—flawed, honest, and deeply relatable. She’s such a beautiful example of what it looks like to pick yourself up again, one day at a time.
Walsh is also an expert at writing older characters, and this book proves it once again. There’s an elderly neighbor who absolutely stole my heart and will quickly become a favorite for readers.
This story left me misty-eyed by the end, cheering for Claire the whole way through. A truly feel-good read that lingers with you long after you turn the last page.
Absolutely loved this book!! The story follows Claire, a middle-aged divorcee who is starting over in Chicago, as she navigates the journey of rediscovering herself. I found myself chuckling throughout - the author, Courtney Walsh, writes with a warm, lighthearted style that makes the characters feel real and relatable. It's a beautiful story about second chances, reminding us that it's never too late to figure out who you are and embrace the power of connection. I can't wait to read more from Courtney Walsh! This was absolutely darling! I loved Claire and her quest for adventure post-divorce, as well as the colorful cast of characters she encounters once she moves away from her two-timing husband and his sequin clad paramour. Starting new and embracing change is never easy; but Claire, with love and encouragement from her daughter, the handsome maybe-only-kinda-sorta-out-of-reach neighbor, and some darling Chicago residents, finds, despite the pain which precedes a fresh start, that second chances are sometimes the best thing that could ever happen to you. *I received a complimentary copy of this book. Thoroughly enjoyed this book! The story follows Claire, who just went through a nasty divorce and after being a stay at home mom, finds herself at a crossroads. Deciding to pick herself up by the bootstraps, she moves to a new city and begins to rediscover herself. She has an accomplice in Miles, her neighbor at her new complex. She goes on journey to find a job she loves, dating, friends and finding herself. The pacing was great and there were some funny scenes. Only some missing scenes, readers should feel comfortable reading this book. I love that the characters are in their mid-40s. This is a must read!

4.25 STARS! This book was such a cute, comforting rom-com! Claire is a recently divorced woman in her mid 40s figuring out how to start over, and her journey felt so inspiring. I loved watching her navigate a new version of life, rediscover herself, and open her heart again.
What really stood out to me was the message that it’s never too late to begin again. No matter your age or circumstances, you can choose yourself and build the life you actually want. I especially loved the friends-to-lovers angle with Miles. It was such a nice change from the usual enemies-to-lovers trope, and their connection felt natural and cozy because of it.
I don’t know how Courtney Walsh does it or what kind of magic she uses when she writes, but Brighter Than Before was amazing and beautiful and moving. I loved Claire’s journey. It was full of growth and hope and change while also being hilarious (& cringy 🫣) at the same time. There was everything I’ve come to love and expect from her novels and it’s easily why she is one of my favorite authors. Every time I read one of her books I’m touched and challenged in the best kind of way. I couldn’t put it down and I highly recommend reading it!!
I was given an advanced copy of Brighter Than Before. All opinions expressed above are my own.
Courtney Walsh is an auto-buy author for me, and Brighter Than Before is yet another reason why. This book is heartfelt, hopeful, and absolutely wonderful.
Claire is starting over. A year ago, her life unraveled when she discovered her husband’s affair—made even worse when he brought his mistress to a charity event Claire had planned. Now divorced, with her daughter grown and living overseas, Claire decides it’s finally time to choose herself. She sells her house and moves to Chicago, a city she’s always dreamed of calling home.
Armed with a list of goals for this new chapter, Claire doesn’t expect her fresh start to include an overly involved landlord. Miles—and Claire’s daughter, Minnie—quickly insert themselves into her life, especially when Minnie signs Claire up for a dating app. Together, Minnie and Miles help screen potential dates, but dating again isn’t easy. Both Miles and Claire carry past hurts, and neither is eager to risk their hearts again.
Claire is such a relatable and refreshing main character. We don’t often see older FMCs who have lived full lives and are still brave enough to want something more, and I loved that about her. Miles is equally wonderful—steadfast, kind, and genuinely supportive of everything Claire wants to try. Their connection felt natural, warm, and deeply satisfying.
Brighter Than Before is a beautiful story about second chances, healing, and the courage it takes to begin again.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read Brighter Than Before.
Arc reader here!! This actually was good! Never read a "older" woman story, and although at first I thought of dropping it, I decided to give it a shot. Good choice me!! Great writing, great characters, a lovable journey, her relationship with her daughter is cute, a really good male love interest. Overall a good book
As an early twenties reader, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone in my same age group. But I would recommend it to maybe more adults or readers who want to read a light no spice rom-com.
PS. Thanks to Courtney Walsh and NetGalley for giving me an arc copy of this book and giving me a chance to read this lovable journey!💕
Let me first start off by saying I absolutely love anything Courtney Walsh writes so it's no surprise I would love this one too. But this one gets me in the feels as a 40 something leaning into the stage of who am I outside of a wife and mother? How can I be brave in a new city? While my experiences are not the same as Claire I can relate on so many levels which probably made me love this book all the more. I laughed as Claire embarrassed herself yet again. I cried as she recognized the love her friends had for her. I rooted for her in every aspect of her life.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh was such a great book! I enjoyed this heartwarming story that presented character development, friendships and relationships among the characters and just the realistic issues faced that I could relate to. I highly recommend this book to fans of Abby Jimenez, Mary Kay Andrews and Taylor Jenkins Reid. It was lighthearted without spice. It's a must read this year. I'm looking forward to reading many more of Courtney Walsh's works in the near future! She has gift! I am left with a full heart having read this book of good feels! Thank you to the author and Netgalley for providing me this title. My review is based on my true opinions and is my own words
4.5 stars! I really liked this book! Claire being brave and trying new things and going outside her comfort zone and learning to do things even when she was afraid inspired me. Even though I am in a totally different place in life it still made me want to make a list of things I want to do and try and start working on them even if they are scary. I also loved the setting in Chicago. It made me want to go back for a visit! The friendships and encouragement and love of the people around her were so sweet. 💕💕

I absolutely loved this book, it had me giggling. It’s heartfelt, relatable and definitely a comfort book. It was filled with life lessons and the idea of it’s never too late for a second chance and in Claire’s perspective it’s about reclaiming herself and making her life what she wants it to be. It’s never too late to start over. After the divorce Claire’s life isn’t the same, now she’s trying to navigate life beyond being the ex wife and a mother. I’d love to see this as a movie adaptation!

Claire spends a year of her life depressed and unable to move on after a painful divorce. She has spent nearly three decades pretending to be the person everyone wanted. It’s time for her to finally find out who she really is. She makes a list of what she really wants for her life and starts down a path of self discovery. This is a beautiful, second chance at life story. The main character is so relatable and lovable. You will absolutely fall in love with her journey and maybe be inspired to go on one of your own! Another beautiful story from Courtney Walsh.
